SIH’s Think On These Things: 1Cor 6:19b

1Cor 6:19b (KJV) 19) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

In our devotion for this morning we will finish up 1 Cor 6:19.  In our text we are told that something  is given to us by God “which ye have of God”.  What is the something this phrase is referring to?  Based on the previous part of verse 19, it could be one of two things.  It can be referring to the indwelling Holy Spirit or to our physical bodies.

The Bible makes it clear that the indwelling Spirit is a gift given to us from the Lord to minister to us in the absence of Christ… John 16:7-15 (KJV)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.

But the Bible is also equally plain that our physical life and existence (including our physical bodies) are found in God … Acts 17:28 (KJV) For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

So we can easily see that both the Holy Spirit and our physical bodies come from our Lord.

Note, that our text finishes by saying “and ye are not your own”.  This helps us to understand that our physical body, the container of the Holy Spirit, is not our possession.  It is the possession of Christ and, therefore, it should be used for His glory and honor.   He made us and He redeemed us … we are His!… Ps 66:8-9 (KJV)  O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:  Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.

Let us all, though the leadership of the Holy Spirit use our physical bodies to serve our Lord, knowing that our bodies are given to us by His grace and for His service.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.

I really appreciated this today, Pastor Rob. There are some things that He is doing in me right now, and part of it does pertain to the physical body . .. much as I would just like to think it is all about what’s going on inside. :) It feels like it’s all connected and so your lesson blessed me. God bless you and thank you!

Deb, So thankful the Lord has used His Word to be a blessing to you. He is so good to us all. I trust He will be helping you to understadn more about your situation as time goes by. Lord bless you.

  3. I am sooooooo thankful that I am no longer my own. I made a dreadful mess of my life when I was in control. While I still make mistakes, I am so thankful that He who is in me convicts and challenges me and empowers and enables me to put things right and to get back on track with Him.
What an amazing God that He would condescend to live in me, and even more so that He would make me His own!

      Amgela,

I see the sin that I commit everyday and am totally amazed at His forgiveness and blessings that He so graciously gives to me. May the Lord bless you as you continue to so faithfully serve Him!
