The US holiday we commonly call “Labor Day” was “dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” (The History of Labor Day”, US Gvt DOL website - http://www.dol.gov/opa/aboutdol/laborday.htm) In times past, Labor Day was commonly referred to as the “working man’s holiday”.
