SIH’s Think On These Things: Gen 5:19-24 (1)

Gen 5:19-24 (KJV)  And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:… And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:  And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:  And Enoch walked with God: and he [was] not; for God took him.

Heb 11:5 (KJV)  By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Jude 1:14 (KJV)  And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Within the pages of the Bible, we read very little about this man named “Enoch” and, yet, what we are told about him should cause any Christian to appreciate the wonderful testimony that he left behind.  Besides his age, lineage and descendants, we are told basically four different things about Enoch:

1. “Enoch walked with God”
2. “God took him (Enoch)”;  in other words, “Enoch was translated that he should not see death and was not found for God took him”
3. “he (Enoch) had this testimony, that he pleased God”
4.”Enoch… prophesied of these saying, Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints”

In our next devotional series, I would like us to consider these four aspects of the Enoch’s testimony and their implication for each of our lives today.

For today’s devotion, I would like us to consider the first two words of our Hebrews 11 text, where we are told that it was “By faith” that “Enoch was translated” and “had the testimony that he pleased God”.  We will be seeing throughout this series faith’s role in the life of Enoch.  In all four of the above aspects of Enoch’s life, it was the gracious gift of faith that enabled and motivated him to remain faithful to his Lord.

In the Bible we are told that “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God”.  Over the next day, let’s ask ourselves, and then consider the answer to the following questions: “Do I REALLY believe what the Bible teaches?”…  “Do I believe its testimony about Christ, His person and His work?”… “Do I trust in its promises for my life?”… and finally, “Do I consistently apply to my life what I learn from its pages?”

If we can honestly say “Yes” to these questions we are already well on our way to sharing in the same type of testimony as that of Enoch.  But if we cannot sincerely say “Yes”, may this upcoming series place a burden on our hearts to begin trusting in the message of the Word and begin anew to build an “Enoch-like” testimony for all to see.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.

This is going to be another great series, Pastor Rob. Who wouldn’t want a testimony like Enoch? God bless you as you teach His Word!

      Deb,

I’m trusting the Lord will bless and use this series to help all of us… It was a very interesting study for me to do. Lord bless. Thanks so much for the comments.

  3. I’d like to answer “yes” to all four questions, and mostly I can do so, but I have to admit there are times when my old self raises its ugly head and I attempt to run my own life. Thankfully, the Lord patiently draws me back to Himself and sets me on the right path again.
I certainly believe all of God’s Word, but do I always apply its lessons?

Thanks for the challenge Rob. I need to spend some time thinking this through.

For all of us…. our “old self” loves to take tmeporary control of things… but it is just as you say…. because we are His people, He always brings us back to Him. Lord bless you. Thanks for the comments.
