1Pet 2:21-24  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:  Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:  Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

A Month of Thankfulness” Devotional Series (Day 5)

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree

SIH’s Think On These Things: 1 Peter 2:21-24

1Pet 2:21-24 (KJV)  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:  Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:  Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Christ’s suffering for His people was not simply limited to His death on the cross.  His entire life was spent giving Himself for those He loved unconditionally.  In doing so, He has set a perfect example for us to follow.

Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:  Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:
The example set by Christ involves many different acts of self-sacrifice.  Although He was perfectly innocent of all sin, He humbly allowed Himself to be abused by sinful man.  This abuse consisted of being publically, falsely, accused of sin; being mocked; and being scorned (“reviled”).  However, His sufferings did not end with verbal abuse.  He was physically abused by being spat upon; being beaten; having His beard plucked; being forced to wear a crown of thorns; being crucified and pierced etc. (“suffered”)
During all of this abuse he continued to set the example for us by trusting in His Heavenly Father, and submitting to His Father’s will even unto His death.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
The greatest example of love and sacrifice He set for us was His willingness to take our sins upon Himself.  This allowed Him to take our place before a just God; receive the wrath of God upon Himself; and in doing so, save us from the eternal punishment of our sins which we so greatly deserve.   It was through His sufferings (stripes) that we can receive both spiritual, and physical, healing throughout eternity.

As we go about our lives today, let’s keep in our hearts and minds the truth that Christ has removed from us the wrath of the Father, and secured for us eternal healing through His shed blood on the cross.  As proof of our thankfulness let us all be motivated to follow His example of love and self-sacrifice as we live our life on earth.

Heb 13:12-15Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.  Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.  For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.  By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of [our] lips giving thanks to his name.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
