John 14:16-18  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;  [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

SIH’s Think On These Things: John 14:16-18

John 14:16-18
16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;   17) [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.  18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

One of the most precious and vital promises that our Lord gives to His followers is His promise to supply a Comforter to us….

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,that he may abide with you for ever;[Even] the Spirit of truth;
Here, we can clearly see Jesus concern for those He was soon to leave behind following His ascension.  He secures through His Father, One that would continue Christ’s ministry of comforting.  What does the ministry of comforting entail?  Christ, as our Comforter, stood beside His people counseling, making intercession, intervening and sharing their burdens.  This would be the ministry of this new Comforter as well.
The Comforter that Christ was speaking of was the Holy Spirit.  He is the One who was active in revealing God’s truth to mankind through inspiring the original authors of the Bible and enabling each one of us to understand the teachings of the Word.

whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
The Comforting Spirit is given exclusively to God’s people.  The lost world does not perceive nor recognize Him. God’s people have a personal relationship with the Spirit, recognizing Him, living with Him and having Him live within us.  The indwelling Spirit is one of the greatest marks of the work of salvation… But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.  And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  Rom 8:9-14 (KJV)

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Christ now identifies Himself as the Comforter that was to come.  Since both Christ and the Spirit are persons of the Godhead, we can understand how it can be that Christ is actually present in us in the person of the Holy Spirit.

What a magnificent comfort it is to understand that we have Christ, Himself, indwelling us in the person of the Holy Spirit.  This means that we will never be alone.  We will never be without aid.  We will never have to bear our burdens alone.  Let us thank Him today for this marvelous gift, His accompanying Spirit.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
