Wisdom’s Appeal: Her Existence During Creation: Prov 8:27-31

27) When he prepared the heavens, I [was] there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28) When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29) When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30) Then I was by him, [as] one brought up [with him]: and I was daily [his] delight, rejoicing always before him;
31) Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights [were] with the sons of men.

INTRODUCTION:

Wisdom now makes an appeal for our reception and application by arguing of her close association with the Lord.  She proves this close relation to the Lord based upon her existence during and after the creative work of God ….

EXPOSITION:

27) When he prepared the heavens, I [was] there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
Wisdom now begins to describe her role in the Lord’s creation of the world. She was present when…
1.  when God erected the 1st and 2nd heavens (the atmosphere and the outer space).
2.  when God created the waters to cover the entire circle of the earth (placed a circular limit upon all the face of the deep.)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”   (Genesis 1:1-2)

28) When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
3.  when God laid a foundation for the clouds above
4.  when God established the appearance of the water from beneath

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.  And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.  And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”  (Genesis 1:6-8)

29) When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
5. when God gave boundaries limiting the spread of the waters upon the earth.
6. when God established the existence of land separating the differing bodies of water on the earth.

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry [land] appear: and it was so.  And God called the dry [land] Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that [it was] good.”   (Genesis 1:9-10)

30) Then I was by him, [as] one brought up [with him]: and I was daily [his] delight, rejoicing always before him; 31) Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights [were] with the sons of men.
During the Lord’s creation week, wisdom was:
1.  accompanying the Lord, much like a child that is living and traveling with his parents as he grows up.
2.  with Him every day,
3.  was pleasing to God as He used wisdom every day of the creation process
4.  a willing, joyful, participant in the creation of all things.
5.  used by God for the good and benefit of all mankind.

All the above, shows us that God is intimately linked to wisdom using her in every aspect of His work.  This causes everything that God does to be perfect, beneficial and pleasing to both God and man.  Sin brought down the perfect workings of God.  Without sin, man would truly be enjoying a perfect existence within the creation of God.

O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.  [So is] this great and wide sea, wherein [are] things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.  There go the ships: [there is] that leviathan, [whom] thou hast made to play therein.  These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give [them] their meat in due season.  [That] thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.  Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.  Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.”   (Psalms 104:24-30)

SUMMARY:

God’s wondrous creation is a constant revelation of His glory for all mankind to see.  It is the creative act of the Lord that constantly shows to man His existence, His power, His grace, and His wisdom.  As we look about us, observing the miraculous nature about us, let us seek to diligently obtain wisdom as a foundation and pillar of our service to Him.

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.  [There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard.  Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,  Which [is] as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, [and] rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

His going forth [is] from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”   (Psalms 19:1-6)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
