SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Opposing Counterparts: Moral Character: Proverbs 12:5-8

5) The thoughts of the righteous [are] right: [but] the counsels of the wicked [are] deceit.
6) The words of the wicked [are] to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7) The wicked are overthrown, and [are] not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.
8) A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

In this section of our study, we are presented with wickedness which is the counterpart to a wise, righteous lifestyle….

EXPOSITION:

Here we can see that wickedness is the counterpart to righteousness of character.

5) The thoughts of the righteous [are] right: [but] the counsels of the wicked [are] deceit.
1.  The plans and desires of the righteous are to always be fair and just to others
2.  The advice and plans of the wicked are to selfishly profit from others through deceit.

Wickedness opposes righteousness in plans, desires and sacrifice  for others.

Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;  But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.”   (2 Corinthians 4:1-2)

6) The words of the wicked [are] to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
1.  The counsel of the wicked are to take advantage of others when they least expect it
2.  The advice that is spoken by the upright will warn others of coming harm and explain a way of escape.

Wickedness opposes righteousness in advice given to others

Your iniquities have turned away these [things], and your sins have withholden good [things] from you.  For among my people are found wicked [men]: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.”   (Jeremiah 5:25-26)

In the mouth of the foolish [is] a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.”   (Proverbs 14:3)

7) The wicked are overthrown, and [are] not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.
1.  The wicked will eventually be overcome and destroyed
2.  The righteous and their descendants will be established and secure

Wickedness opposes righteousness in its results

“I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.  Yet he passed away, and, lo, he [was] not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.  Mark the perfect [man], and behold the upright: for the end of [that] man [is] peace.”   (Psalms 37:35-37)

8) A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
1.  The wise man will shine in the eyes of others and be appreciated by others.
2.  The man with crooked, sinful desires will be disrespected by others.

Wickedness opposes righteousness in our reputation among others.

Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, [that] David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.”   (1 Samuel 18:30)

His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.”   (Psalms 132:18)

SUMMARY:

Wickedness is the opposing counter point to righteousness this is clearly shown in:
1. the plans, desires and sacrifice for others
2.  the advice given to others
3.  The end results of actions and speech
4.  The reputations among others that can be possessed.
May we all clearly see the differences between living wise, righteous lives and living a life characterized by wickedness and enmity against God.
By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.
May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

I pray that not only would this warn believers to not stray but that also those who are not saved would read this and have not come to a saving knowledge of Him would be convicted about what Proverbs has to say about wickedness and its consequences

  3. Debbie says:

I love how you showed the contrast . .really like a line drawn in the sand. Thank you and God bless you , Pastor Rob!

  4. You have indeed shown contrasts here, Rob – contrasts which should be evident in our lives.

We who are blood-bought, adopted children of the living God SHOULD stand out in the world as zebras in among white horses. Those in the world should SEE the difference and be drawn to the One who makes the difference.

May we all take note, take to heart, and be faithful to His calling on our lives.
