SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Anatomy Of The Wise: The Tongue (Part 2): Proverbs 15:5-8

5) A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
6) In the house of the righteous [is] much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
7) The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so.
8) The sacrifice of the wicked [is] an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright [is] his delight.

EXPOSITION:

In the text for this morning, we find Solomon continues to use the tongue to illustrate some of the principles that are exhibited in Godly communications.  In this case, it is how we choose to receive the words that others speak to us…

5) A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
1.  Those that lack wisdom hate and brush off instructions given to him by those who love him and have his best interests at heart.
2.  A person can show he understands the true benefit of warnings by listening carefully and considering them

The acceptance of counsel and warnings given from those who love us shows the level of wisdom that we possess.

And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.  Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do [it].”   (1 Chronicles 28:9-10)

6) In the house of the righteous [is] much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
1.  Those who live in alignment with God’s desires will abide with the riches of His blessings (material and spiritual blessings).
2.  Those that depart from His commands will only be reaping trouble and heartache now and in the world to come.

The desires of the Lord, spoken to us in His Word, will bring blessings to those who are wise enough to follow them.

Praise ye the LORD. Blessed [is] the man [that] feareth the LORD, [that] delighteth greatly in his commandments.  His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.  Wealth and riches [shall be] in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.”   (Psalms 112:1-3)

Go to now, [ye] rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon [you].  Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.  Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
 (James 5:1-3)

7) The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so.
1.  The wise will seek to hand down the knowledge of God’s words to others.  They will recognize God not only meant to help us but also to help those with whom we come into contact.
2.  The foolish do not desire to accept, nor share with others, the Lord’s Words of instruction.

Another mark of Godly wisdom is seen in the desire to share God’s Words, motivated out of hearts of love and concern for others.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”   (Ephesians 4:29)

“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”   (Matthew 12:34)

8) The sacrifice of the wicked [is] an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright [is] his delight.
1.  The hypocritical acts of worship, stemming from a heart of selfishness, are rejected and hated by the Lord.
2.  The communication of those who are made right with God (through the blood of Christ) are acceptable and pleasing to God.

The Lord finds pleasure in the sincere communion of His people.  The selfish, hypocritical, ritualistic acts of worship are rejected by the Lord.

A Prayer of David. Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, [that goeth] not out of feigned lips.”   (Psalms 17:1)

I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.  Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept [them]: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.”   (Amos 5:21-22)

SUMMARY:

In the this study on speech,  we have seen  basic principles concerning our speech and the need to properly treat the speech of others…
1. When our communications are done with a helpful, kind, loving, humble spirit correction and advice is more easily taken by others.
2.  Do we want our communications to be valuable to others and pleasing to God?  We must share Godly knowledge that is properly understood and applied to the situation we are addressing.
3.  When we realize that the Lord knows any situation perfectly, we can trust in Him to supply the appropriate message in His Word for those that are in need of help.
4.  We have a simple choice as we speak to others…. supply to them life and strength by sharing the knowledge of God with them or cause them harm by handing to them the false teachings of man.
5.  Our acceptance of counsels and warnings from those who are working on our behalf shows the level of wisdom that we possess.
6.  The desires of the Lord that are found in His Word will bring blessings to those who are wise enough to follow them.
7.  Another mark of Godly wisdom is seen in the desire to share God’s Words with others.
8.  The Lord finds pleasure in the sincere communion of His people.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
