SIH TOTT ICON(Mat 6:9a)  After this manner therefore pray ye:…

As our Lord begins to instruct us on the content of our prayers, He makes it certain we understand that His instructions are not to be repeated word for word in a vain routine.  The Greek word for “manner” puts forth the idea of “following this pattern” or “in this fashion”.

In the preceding verses, He especially emphasizes this principle by saying …”But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.  Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”

As we enter into our day and come before Him in prayer, let’s always keep in mind that our prayers should be sincere and personal, flowing from our hearts in an individualized fashion.

May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

  1. I agree the so-called Lord’s prayer was intended to be a pattern for prayer, not words to be recited. It is full of deep meaning, but (maybe from years of reciting it as part of my penance as a Roman Catholic) I cannot understand why it is ‘recited’. We need to live according to its teachings and pattern our prayer from it, but was it ever intended to be recited? I don’t think so.

      Angela,

I think in many ways, reciting prayers is much easier than sincerely speaking to the Lord from our heart. We all have to be so careful that our prayers are not vain repetitions. I hurt for those who are misled into believeing that the Lord is pleased with outward religious displays, instead of a sincere relationship with Him.
