One of the worse feelings in the world is when we feel that no one understands us or the situation we are facing.  There are times when those who are closest to us seem to have no understanding of the pain, anxiety or fears that we have within us.  It is this very feeling of being misunderstood that accompanies depression, anxiety and, at the extreme, suicidal thoughts.

What is God’s message to His people who feel so very misunderstood and isolated?   You are not alone…Jehovah, the Creator of heaven and earth is a loving, kind and concerned God.  He cares about you and He understands you and your situation in life.  Listen to what the Bible says about how concerned He is about you…

Eph 2:10 (KJV)  10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Gen 16:13 (KJV) And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me…

Luke 12:6-7 (KJV)  Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?  But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Exod 33:17 (KJV)  … for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

Job 31:4 (KJV)  Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Ps 56:8 (KJV)  Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: [are they] not in thy book?

2Kgs 20:5 (KJV)  …Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears:…

Isa 41:13 (KJV) For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

2Tim 4:17 (KJV)  Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me;…

Phil 4:19 (KJV)  19But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

The Bible, God’s Word that He has given to mankind, reveals to us the following…

  1. God has made you.  You are the unique creation of His hands. (Eph 2:10)
  2. God sees you and is watching over you. (Gen 16:13)
  3. God knows you so well that He has counted the very hairs on your head. (Lk 12:6-7)
  4. God knows you by name (Ex 33:17)
  5. God sees the path you are on in life and is watching your very steps. (Job 31:4)
  6. God puts your tears in a bottle. (Psa 56:8)
  7. God hears your prayers and sees your sorrow (2 Kngs 20:5)
  8. God will take  your hand and help you (Isa 41:13)
  9. God will stand beside you and strengthen you (2 Tim 4:17)
  10.  God will supply all your needs (Phil 4:19)

For those who are saved …

What a glorious message from God’s Word… no matter what you may face, no matter how often you are misunderstood by man… the Lord will always understand, accompany and care for you.  You are His, nothing can separate you from His love.

Rom 8:31-39 (KJV)

What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us?  He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?  Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? [It is] God that justifieth.  Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

For those who have yet to be saved…

God’s love was shown to mankind through the sending of His Son to come and die on the cross …

Rom 5:6-11 (KJV)

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.  And not only [so], but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Titus 3:4-7 (KJV)

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Won’t you turn to Christ and trust in Him for the forgiveness of your sins?  You will never be left alone nor misunderstood by Him.

Dear Rob, this has blessed me so much tonight . . .feeling a little isolated and alone in my “situation”. But that isn’t the truth, really! Yay! God bless you as you share His word and His truth that He is with us and understands all that we are going through!

    • Rob Barkman says:

He is so gracious in promising His full attention to our lives and the burdens we are bearing. Just think about it… the Almighty Creator of the universe is actually giving us His full attention and presence every second of the day! Praise Him for His wonderful promise to us.

  5. Great Rob – a great reminder for us and a great praise for our great God.

Since God gave His most Precious for me, I must be very precious to Him. He gave His Beloved to redeem me to Himself, and He adopted me into His own family. That thought is incomprehensible, but I know it is true. He has proven it to me over and over and over and over again throughout the years. He has never failed me and I know He never will.

    >> Isa 41:13 (KJV) For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

    What an amazing God!

Hi Rob, I really liked the concise list of 10 points with corresponding Bible verses. I would like to copy them and have them for future reference.

One thing I struggle with relates to your opening paragraph. I’m sure I’m opening up a can of worms by writing this, but I know that many Christians believe that depression is simply a weakness the comes from a less-than-ideal relationship with God. I have read comments to that effect on many blogs over the past year. And yet I know several Christians who have struggled with mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, etc., including my own pastor. I know that sometimes a form of depression can be related to our spiritual experience, but clinical depression is a chemical disorder, a medical condition, which requires medical intervention just as other medical issues do, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer. Praying it away is not always the answer. People are not judged in the same way when diagnosed with those other conditions and made to feel that they are failures as Christians.

April 28, the day you wrote this blog post, would have been my younger brother’s birthday. I wish he was alive to celebrate it with our family this year and the many years he has been gone. And that Christians would accept that there are many like him who have fought courageous battles against depression and succumbed, just like those who do not win the fight against cancer. None of us knows the struggles of another’s heart and mind. I am so glad that our Father in heaven does.

    • Rob Barkman says:

You bring up a really good point and I appreciate it very much. I absolutely agree with you that sometimes depression can take place due to medical issues and is not related to the sufferer’s sins or their spriitual condition. No doubt about that. I’ve experienced that in the lives of some faithful Godly church members throughout the years.

My only point was I have many people who experienced depression because they led lonely lives with seemingly no purpose. They see themselves as worthless, alone and misunderstood by all. But I’ve seen these same people, once they understood the Lord was with them, understood them, and have an important purpose for their life become joyful, energized servants for His glory. This is why the Lord explains that there is a type of joy that “passes understanding” that can only be had by those who have trusted in Him. Without Him there can be no joy and no real purpose to our lives. There are many individuals like this around us. I’m hoping we agree on the basic idea I was trying to get across.

By the way, in this whole discussion we have to keep in mind that ANY medical problem is an effect of sin on mankind. If Adam and Eve had never fallen, we would not have colds, flu, measles, heart disease, and yes, even depression. So in a GENERAL sense every medical illness we face is due to mankind’s fall. I’m not saying that every sickness can be traced directly back to an act of sin on the part of the sufferer. However, the fact remains every sickness is the result of being a part of sinful, fallen mankind. When we suffer a medical affliction, or see others suffering medical issues, we need to always remember, this is the result of sin falling upon all mankind.

Just as sin resulted in the medical suffering upon mankind, so too, mankind needs a Great Physician to undo the original cause of all medical sickness. The Lord Jesus did this when He died on the cross and put sin to death. When we enter into eternity, as one of the redeemed, we will never face any more sickness, sorrow, or death.

Praise Him. Even our physical illnesses are a living testimony of our need of the Lord and His saving grace in our lives.

Thank you again Joy, for bringing out a very impoortant point and the need for clarification of what I was trying to say. Lord bless you dear friend. My prayers are with you.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify your comments, Rob. Yes, I believe we agree overall on the points you raised. But I did want to raise the concern I did because of the proliferation of Christian blogs I’ve come across over the past 1 1/2 years that have such pat answers for people with mental health issues, which unfortunately increase their guilt and don’t resolve their issues. God is good and He knows our hearts and our struggles and I am so thankful He will be our judge, not other people. Thanks for your prayers.
