The healing of the demon possessed man is the next miracle in our series…This miracle is recorded for us in Mar 1:21-28, Luk 4:33-37

In our study for this morning we find the Lord teaching in the synagogue.  In attendance at this service was a man that had the spirit of an unclean devil.  As the Lord taught, this demon possessed man cried out and said… “Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God”.

The Lord responded “Hold thy peace and come out of him”.  We find the demon obeys the command of the Lord, throws the man down and leaves the body of this man.

The result of this great deed was that both the authority and the power of Christ was recognized by those who witnessed this great event.  The account of this event closes with the statement,… “And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.  And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Not only do we have the Lord’s authority over evil and His great strength on display, but we also can learn some important lessons about the evil powers in the world around us:

  1. The powers of darkness exist; they are not simply a figment of our imagination.
  2.  The powers of darkness are in conflict with Christ and share nothing in common with Him.
  3. The powers of darkness recognize Christ and understand many truths about Him.
  4. The powers of darkness are under the authority of Christ; they MUST follow His      commands.

Not only does this account help us to recognize the existence of the wicked powers at work in this world but it also points us to a very crucial aspect of saving faith.  Here, we find that there were many truths about Christ that were sincerely believed by this demon…His identity (Jesus and the Holy One of God), His authority and His ministry.  Although He recognized, and sincerely believed these things, obviously he was not saved.

As professing Christians, we must be aware of the possibility that we have exercised the same type of faith as this demon.  It is a faith that is characterized by a decision and not a conversion.  It is a faith that is based solely on an action of the flesh, not a faith that proceeds from a divine working of God within us.

May we all take this account very seriously.  How will we know our belief is based upon an act of God?  We will be changed into a new creature in Christ and we will have the indwelling Holy Spirit leading us to perform works of fruit bearing as evidence of that change.

Jas 2:17-1Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

  1. Personalized evil exits. If we are honest we have all experienced it.

There is no doubt that powers of darkness exist and manifest themselves as demons (fallen angels), Satan himself being the chief example of this. And, yet the lost world, in many cases, deny his the existance of personalized evil. it is because Satan has blinded their minds to the truth of their existance. Lord bless. Thanks for your comments

i have heard of demons trying to take over a body, but have never actually seen it. the closest i get to a demon, is Satan, who pesters my brother for reading his bible so much

      Terry,

You have really opened up a can of worms about demonic possession in these times. There are some who believe that demon possession continues to take place today, while others believe it was a special demonic manifestation that only took place during the times of Christ. In either case, the important point is that demons do exist and they attempt to oppress mankind, trying to oppose them as they seek the Lord and His will for thier lives. When we see demons affecting others we are reminded of the great need to be in prayer and to help those oppressed to avoid opening themselves to demonic oppresion.

      Lord bless you.

I am carrying this vital truth away with me from this post: The powers of darkness are under the power of Christ! “Fear not”, Our Lord tells us–and LET US LISTEN ALWAYS!

    • Rob Barkman says:

Thank the Lord… it is a very vital truth that we all should have on our minds daily. Thank you for your knind words. Lord bless you, Granbee!

  5. >> “How will we know our belief is based upon an act of God?”
I totally agree with your answer to this question. We experience the REALITY of our new life and of our communion with Him.

I would also add that if anyone is UNSURE of this, it is time to seek an answer. If there is no drastic change of life; if there is no personal two-way communion with a living God; if there is no experience of the power of His presence in the life; if the Word of God doesn’t stir the heart, mind and actions . . . it is time to seek an answer. It is time to make sure.

Thank you so much for emphasizing the very intent of this posting. One of the greatest burdens I have had on my heart for the last few years has been the need to explain to anyone who would hear me the extreme importance of being sure that the Lord has worked a work of salvation in us. It is so important for us to understand that we can mentally assent to a truth about Christ without ever experiencing God’s gift of grace in our hearts.

There are so many who have been told that to receive salvation they must “walk down the aisle” or “say this prayer” or “raise your hand”. Speaking as a Baptist, it breaks my heart to think that Baptists are probably the worst ones who spread this idea among their people. It breaks my heart. I believe there are many people who are relying upon an act they have performed instead of relying upon the Lord and His work for their salvation.

It is exactly as you say… how do we know the difference? Have we been made a new creature in Christ with a new set of desires and a new set of works to prove our new creation in Him.

Lord bless you Angela… thank you again for emphasizing what is so important in today’s time.

Rob, I really appreciate you and your heart to make sure that we are indeed saved and not having only an acceptance of Jesus, of knowing that He is God’s Son, but not asking Him or allowing Him to be Lord of our Lives and the changer of our souls. God bless you! Also, I love the short pieces you are doing, with just a single verse . .. are those specifically for facebook? What a wonderful idea!

Debbie, Thank you for your kind words…. It just seems as if the Lord has really been laying this on my heart for quite some time now. By the way… you are one half right about the short “Here a Little There A Little” postings. Yes, facebook was one of the areas the Lord has burdened me about… also, there were several people who had asked me for shorter thoughts to help them keep their mind on the Lord each day. Teh “think On These Things” is more for a daily devotion time. The “Here a Little There A Little” is for people at work, or in the middle of stuff at home that want a real quick thought about the Word. It seems like my feedback is saying they use these much like I use your postings…. to give me a really quick pick me up during the day. Lord bless. And thanks again for your ministry. It does encourage my heart.
