A New Ministry Has Begun At Settled In Heaven
Settled In Heaven Ministries is beginning a new type of teaching series. This new ministry is entitled “Teach Others Also”. This ministry will consist of 13 video and written lessons specifically tailored for SS classes, Home Bible Studies, and Small Group Meetings. This ministry was started based upon several requests we have received for a quarterly (12 or 13 week) teaching series.
Our first series entitled “The Precious Word” will begin with the first weekly posting on Sunday Morning July 1st and is scheduled to conclude with the Sept 23rd posting. This will give anyone interested the ability to see much of this series before the fall quarter begins. Hopefully, after seeing the first several lessons you will be able to decide whether you would like to use this series in the upcoming quarter.
This study will be emphasizing the importance of the Word of God for the Christian while, at the same time, answering questions that are commonly asked by unbelievers. It will be clearly demonstrating that the Word of God supplies the believer with EVERYTHING that is needed to serve the Lord for the entire course of their lives. For the unbeliever they will be receiving truths about God, Sin and Salvation and many other important truths.
The 13 interconnected subjects that are covered in this series are:
- Introduction to the study – The Preciousness of the Word
- Does God Exist?
- Are We Created Beings?
- Is There A Messiah?
- Does Sin Exist?
- How Can I Be Comforted In the Midst of Suffering?
- What Happens When We Die?
- How Can We Prepare For Death?
- Where Can We Find Lasting Joy?
- What Is The Meaning To Life?
- Why Does Tragedy Exist?
- Is There A Universal Standard Of Right and Wrong?
- Summary Of Our Study – The Preciousness Of the Word (Can be deleted for classes using 12 week quarters)
The series material includes:
- The 25 minute video lesson presentation (for those who would like to lead a Bible study group without the availability of a teacher). This video will be posted on the SIH blog along with the written copy.
- The Written copy of the current lesson as a blog posting each Sunday morning
- The 117 page Student/Teacher Manual which can be downloaded here in .pdf or .docx format. It is highly suggested that each student receives a copy of this manual to aid in the teaching process. This manual includes:
- a written outline of each lesson ( a copy of the written lesson that was posted on the blog website)
- from 5 to 7 questions for each lesson
- an answer key at the end of the book (pg 100-113) that can easily be deleted from the students copy of the manual
This is the first time I have attempted this type of series so it is a learning process for me. I have attempted to correct as many errors as possible in the handbook, however, let me apologize for any errors that may still exist.
If you have any suggestions regarding subjects for upcoming series, improvements or any type of changes you would like to see with these lessons please feel free to contact me at settledinheaven@gmail.com. ANY INPUT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. The feedback I receive from this initial series will form the future path for this ministry.
As always, all the material offered is free of charge. All of these materials may be distributed freely. All that is asked is that no monetary gain be received from the distribution of these materials. May the Lord bless each one of us as we begin this new ministry at SIH Ministries. I trust this ministry will be a blessing to each one of us.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Woman With Infirmity
The next miracle in our series is healing the Woman with an infirmity …This miracle is recorded for us in Luke 13:10-13
In this miracle, we find a woman whose spine was physically bent to an extreme. Her condition was so severe that she could not straighten her back and lift herself to an upright position…” And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself”
The remedy for this lady’s condition was found in the gracious intervention of Christ Jesus…. “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.”
This woman’s posture reminds me of an individual who is bent down bearing the burden of their own sin as they live their life on earth… Ps 38:4 “For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.”
What is the solution to this horrible burden of sin? Just as the lady in our miracle found release from her infliction in Christ, so too, the burden of sin can be removed by Christ… Matt 11:28-30 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
Bring your sin burdens to Christ and leave them with Him. He came to the earth and lived a perfect life enabling Him to be our sinless substitute for us. As He has died on the cross, He was bearing the punishment of the sins of His people. By coming to Him, we can exchange our sinful acts for His righteousness, thus receiving rest from this horrible burden that we bear.
When we come to Him, we are to come willing to accept Him as Lord of our life and out of love and appreciation serve Him with all of our might. This is the yoke that we are to bear. It is a yoke that is light… a yoke that we bear with joy, knowing that we have been liberated from the burden of sin that will only work death in our lives.
If you have never been released from this burden of sin, come to Christ. It is through Him and Him alone that we can find rest for our souls. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

Ultimate Forgiveness…
Luke 23:32-34 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Would We Be Faithful To The End?
Acts 7:57-60 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast [him] out of the city, and stoned [him]:… And they stoned Stephen, calling upon [God], and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
SIH’s Think On These Things: A Blind Mute Demoniac
The next miracle in our series is Healing a blind mute demoniac …This miracle is recorded for us in Matt 12:22, Luke 11:14
Here is one account of this miracle that is set before us… “And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.”
Here we are told the result of this miracle was that the people “wondered” at the workings of Christ. The root word of the word translated “wondered” has three ideas with it:
- “to look closely”, “to examine”
- “to perceive”, “to understand”
- “to appreciate”
Do we “wonder” at the workings of Christ that take place around us? In our lives; in the lives of our acquaintances, friends and family; in the natural world that surrounds us; and in the pages of God’s Word; do we come to a recognition and appreciation of His greatness, authority, strength, and wisdom?
If we find these miracles slipping by the wayside of our minds, let’s follow the three steps outlined the definition of wonder…
- firstly, we need to take a moment to recognize, and then closely examine, the work of Christ that we see taking place.
- Secondly, after our examination of the event we need to come to an understanding of its impact and what it is teaching us about the person, attributes and workings of Christ.
- Finally, we should allow this new understanding of the greatness of Christ work in our hearts to give us a new appreciation and reverence of His supremacy and grace. This should renew a spirit of worship in our hearts and minds.
Let us resolve to never take His workings for granted. When we recognize He is at work, let’s take a moment to process His workings and come to a greater recognition and appreciation of our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Catching A Fish With A Coin
The next miracle in our series is Catching A Fish With A Coin …This miracle is recorded for us in Matt 17:24-27
The “tribute” money being described in this miracle was a Roman tax that was levied to honor (or “give tribute”) to Caesar.
This miracle began when the tax collectors approached Peter and asked him if Christ paid tribute to Caesar. Peter responded in the affirmative. Christ then uses this event to teach an important spiritual lesson….” What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.”
The spiritual lesson from this miracle is two-fold:
- Recognition of Christ’s high position of authority… Christ is King of King and Lord of Lords. (1 Tim 6:15) He is actually King and Lord over the Caesar. Therefore, the tribute money that was collected should actually be given to Him and not Caesar.
- Recognition of the Christian as members of Christ’s royal family…Also, Peter (standing as representative of all Christians) was adopted into the family of Christ. (Gals 4:5) He was “a child of the King!” Therefore, Peter had the liberty to not pay this tribute money that actually belonged to Christ. Why?… because the tribute money was never owed by a child of the ruler, it was only levied against those who were not related to the ruler.
In spite of the fact that neither Christ, nor Peter, actually owed this tribute money, they paid it. Why? It was a matter of testimony. Christ explains this when He says “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”
How often do we go “the second mile” to retain a good testimony in the eyes of those around us? In this example Christ emphasizes this truth by paying a tribute that He was not obligated to pay.
(Paul emphasized the same principle in 1 Cor 8:4-10. Here we find that we are allowed to eat meat sacrificed to idols (because an idol isn’t really a god). But we are to not take advantage of this liberty for the sake of those who are weak in the faith. They might misunderstand our eating of the meat and interpret the act as a vindication of idolatry.)
Are there any “liberties” we are exercising that could be misunderstood by those around us? Could this liberty be a stumbling block, ruining our testimony for Him? If so, let us prayerfully consider no longer exercising this liberty out of our love for Christ and others.
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Healing The Demoniac Boy
The next miracle in our series is Healing The Demoniac Boy …This miracle is recorded for us in Matt 17:14-21, Mark 9:17-25, Luke 9:37-43
In this miracle, we have a demon possessed boy who is described as a “lunatic”, “sore vexed”, “he falls into the fire and into the water”, “has a dumb spirit”, “he foameth”, “gnasheth his teeth”, and “pineth away”. From this variety of descriptions we can easily see the horrible condition this boy was in and the basis for his father’s great concern. The father brings this son to the disciples of Christ who are unsuccessful in casting it out. Then the father brings the child to Christ who successfully casts out the demon and heals the child.
Afterward, His disciples come to Him questioning Him, “Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:” Jesus then continues…
If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
To understand Jesus response we need to know that the mustard seed is the smallest of the commonly planted seeds of the day. What He was saying is simply that with the smallest amount of genuine, God given faith we can see great miracles take place in our lives and the lives of others.
(Please keep in mind, Godly faith involves, among other things…
- an acknowledgement that He is Sovereign (able to intervene in any situation)
- a recognition that His will is ALWAYS done in all areas of living
- what takes place is ALWAYS for His glory and the good of His people.
- A desire for His will to be done above our own desires
This type of faith is shown in our lives as a spirit of submission to His will above our desires. When the above four principles are sincerely and deeply held beliefs, we find that He answers every one of our prayers in accordance with His will.
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting – Christ continues by explaining how we can develop this type of genuine faith in our lives. It is through prayer (communion with Him and recognition of our need for His intervention in the situation) and fasting (the denial of the fulfillment of fleshly desires which brings us into submission His will above our own desires.) The combination of these two practices are great aids in the development of a Godly faith that stands in times of trial and need.
Do we have a faith that allows Christ to work miracles as we come before His throne of grace?
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Healing The Man Who Was Blind From Birth
The next miracle in our series is Healing The Man Who Was Blind From Birth …This miracle is recorded for us in John 9:1-41
(The record of this miracle is long and detailed… I would suggest that we all read the entire miracle as it is recorded in John. For the sake of this devotional much of the miracle’s details and truths have been skipped. Sorry.)
In this miracle recorded in the book of John we find 5 basic parts…
- The prelude (vs 1-5) – The Lord explaining why this man was born blind… “Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. “ This young man had been born blind, but not because of any sin. He had been born blind so that the Lord would manifest the strength, authority and grace of God in this healing.
- The miracle –(vs 6-7) The Lord giving physical sight to this young man who was born blind – “When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. “Why the uniqueness in the method of this healing? This miracle symbolized spiritual truths about salvation. Basically, this miracle teaches us that although we are all born spiritually blind, the Lord by grace can intervene, apply the Word by the Spirit; and wash us of our sin while giving us spiritual sight.
- The Testimony of the young man (vs 8-34) “A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight”… “one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” …. – The testimony of this young man consisted of explaining the miracle that was performed and the results of that miracle. This is the most effective way that we can witness to others also… tell others what He has done for us and how we have changed since our salvation.
- The Results of his testimony (vs 8-34) are typical reactions from the fallen world. They include curiosity, fault-finding, disbelief, and rejection.
- The Ultimate Lesson (35-41) – And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. The ultimate lesson of this miracle, and our devotion today is taking an honest evaluation of our condition before the Lord. We find that the Pharisees, as they denied their spiritual need, were demonstrating that they were spiritually blind. Others, who are motivated to come to Christ, as they see their sinfulness and inability to save themselves, are the ones with Godly understanding and spiritual life.
We must be honest with ourselves and examine our hearts. Have we ever been given spiritual life and sight or are we, like some of the Pharisees, in denial of our own spiritual blindness? We should ask the Lord to graciously show us our true spiritual condition today.
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.

The Coming Zombie Apocalypse Part 3
In lesson #1 of our series, we have looked at 3 different “evidences” that the world claims proves that Zombies exist:
.
.
- The CDC publication (http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies_novella.htm)
- The various news stories of current “Zombie” activity
- Bible verses that have been described as speaking of “Zombie” activity and a coming “Zombie Apocalypse”.
In lesson #2 of our series, we saw that the Bible verses that are used to prove Zombie activity and a coming Apocalypse, actually, do not speak about Zombies at all. When taken in context, NONE of them speak of Zombie activity. In this lesson, the importance of keeping Bible verses in their context was illustrated and emphasized for us.
As we now begin lesson #3, the final lesson of our series, let’s address these other “evidences” of Zombie activity that we have sighted….
First of all, what about the CDC report?
Not only did the CDC publish a handbook on preparation for a coming Zombie apocalypse, but they also issued a statement concerning this publication.
The Huffington Post reported that…
“Over the years the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a couple of tongue-in-cheek “zombie warnings,” which really are just disaster-preparedness stunts.” “But on Thursday, the agency made it official: Zombies don’t exist. CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms), wrote agency spokesman David Daigle in an email to The Huffington Post.”
See the entire article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/01/cdc-denies-zombies-existence_n_1562141.html
So, we find that the same CDC that was being a trusted source to prove Zombies exist, has now made it public that they were simply using the Zombie theme as a disaster-preparedness stunt. In other words, if we had kept the CDC handbook in the context of their other news releases, we would not have had this misunderstanding. Here, once again, the need for keeping information in CONTEXT rears it’s ugly head.
The sad part is that in this fallen world, where men’s minds are affected by their fallen nature, there are many who actually believed this handbook was legitimate and based on fact.
OK, if the CDC was simply “pulling our legs” what do we do about all those news stories? How can we explain what is going on?
Actually this is a very good question that deserves a very serious answer. We’ll find some possible answers to this question in God’s Word…
The primary reason these events have taken place because we live in a fallen, sinful, rebellious world..
First of all, let’s keep in mind that the news stories contain accounts of the consumption of human flesh and not “Zombies”. What I mean is that the men who are committing the crimes in these news stories were eating human flesh, but nowhere do we find a claim that they have died and come back to life. This is a very important and overlooked point. The issue behind these news events is “cannibalism”, pure and simple. I believe the news media has simply used the “Zombie” storyline to heighten interest in these stories.
When we understand that these stories reflect cannibalism, it changes everything. We are now no longer looking at something is basically science-fiction brought to life; we are now looking at a type of act that has existed throughout history. The Bible had documented some events of cannibalism…. (Most of these events took place during the siege of Jerusalem when the Israelites were trapped in the city and starving to death…. Deut 28:53-57, Lev 26:29, 2 Kings 6:26-29, Jere 19:9, Ezek 5:10, Lam 4:10)
What was the cause of these horrible occurrences? They were the result of the hardness of fallen man’s heart. It was because of the sin of Israel that they were placed under siege by invading armies; and it was because of their refusal to repent of those sins that the siege continued to the point of their starvation. The cannibalism that took place in these events reminds us that we live in a fallen world that is filled with sin, rebellion, and stubbornness.
One thing is for certain, the events of today teach us of the existance of the same basic causes as the events that have taken place hundreds of years before. When we hear of those who attack others, physically harming and mutilating them, they are clearly proclaiming to us all the horrible shape that our world is in.
Our world is fallen, depraved and corrupted beyond human repair. The Bible makes this plain when we read “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, [and] seek God. They are all gone aside, they are [all] together become filthy: [there is] none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Psalm 14:2-3)
And also… “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:” (Rom 2:4-6)
When we see these most heinous actions we are reminded of how perverted mankind truly is when the restraining hand of God taken away…. (Roms 1:21-32)
A secondary influence could be demonic activity…
Demonic oppression can cause many harmful, depraved acts on the part of the one being influenced. Note this example of a demon possessed man in Mark 5:1-5… “And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had [his] dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any [man] tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
Here, we find a demon possessed man who harmed himself as well as attempted to harm others. The men of the city had attempted to bind him with chains and fetters to protect themselves, only to have them broken off due to his supernatural strength.
If this is the root cause of these actions they are reminders of the existence of the powers of darkness that exist in the world and also we should be reminded that it is only through Christ that we can get the victory over these evil powers. Heb 2:9-15 “But we see Jesus, …Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Another secondary cause could be mental illness…
Of course, the events we have read about in the news could be the result of mental illness on the part of the attacker. Because we live in a fallen world, we are faced with sicknesses. Not only physical, but mental illness exists due to sin affecting our lives.
If mental illness is to blame for these events, we should remind ourselves that Christ is the great Physician who can heal us of our spiritual, physical and mental sicknesses that we face… “And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. “ (Luke 5:31-32)
Whatever the secondary cause may be, whether spiritual or physical in nature, the Lord Jesus Christ is the One that can heal the sickness and bring about health and well being to those who are suffering such great ills.
Perhaps the abuse of drugs played a secondary role in these crimes…
The Lord has warned His people from abusing their bodies with harmful substances:
First, our bodies are His possession and, as such we are to care for them (1 Cor 3:16-17, 1 Cor 6:19-20) Secondly, we are to always remain alert and under control (2 Tim 4:5, 1 Pet 1:13, 4:7, 5:8) Thirdly, our Lord is to be the ONLY One that controls our life (Matt 6:24, Luke 16:13)
If drugs are playing a part in these events, it should be a reminder to us of the need to live lives dedicated to the use, control and glory of God….”Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:12-14)
My final thought is that the influence of the entertainment of this world may have played a secondary role as well.
The Lord has told us that worldly influences can be extremely harmful in the lives of His people. (1 Cor 15:33, Prov 13:20, Prov 9:6). This is why we are told to abstain from the influences of this world (Roms 12:1-2).
I am not saying that just because a person watches a television show about Zombies that they will then go out and commit cannibalism. However, I do believe that this influence, in conjunction with some of the above causes (demonic influence, drug abuse, or mental illness), could cause someone to commit such perverted actions. When it comes to these types of entertainment it is far better to abstain from their influences in our lives. This is why the Lord tells us to not even speak of such things… “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them]. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.” (Eph 5:11-12)
Summary…
When it comes to the news reports of “Zombie” activity, I prefer to “call them what they are”… they are acts of cannibalism that takes place because of the sinful nature of fallen mankind, with some secondary causes bringing about these heinous, sinful perverted acts. They cry aloud of the world’s need of forgiveness and its inability to please God when left to its own devices.
Conclusion of our study…
If there was ever a time to stop and reflect on the true condition of our hearts, it is now. With these wicked events taking place, in conjunction with the current trend of rejection of the message of Christianity, we are brought face to face with our need of the Lord Jesus Christ for every aspect of our lives. We have to be honest with ourselves and realize that, apart from God’s grace, we could easily be the ones that are committing such wicked acts as these. These acts are displays of the wickedness that inhabits every fallen man’s being. This is how corrupt, twisted and perverse every one of us would be without Christ’s restraining influence. Oh, how we need His salvation that He extends to His people! How important it is for us to receive a gracious act of God that saves us from the penalty, power and eventually, in eternity, the very presence of sin.
If we search our hearts and see that we are truly one of His people, we need to fall to our knees and ask the Lord to intervene in our lives and give to us the needed grace to continue to serve Him in the midst of this fallen world. Great is the need of those around us. If we are to minister to them, we must be empowered by Almighty God.
If, after we examine our hearts, we see that we are in need of His gracious salvation… now is the time to come to the Lord for forgiveness, security, and peace in the midst of a troubled, sin-sick world. Come to Christ in a spirit of submission, understanding that you cannot in any way gain forgiveness of your own merit. Come to Christ with sorrow in your heart, seeing your sinful condition and turning from your acts of sin that were in rebellion against Him. Come to Christ by faith, trusting in Him to do the work necessary to gain the forgiveness of your sins and to be Lord of our life.
May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

The Coming Zombie Apocalypse – Part 2
In our previous study, we defined what is meant by the term “Zombie” and then we proceeded to list some news stories involving what some have described as “Zombies”. Then, finally, we gave a listing of 9 representative verses found in the Bible that seem to speak of “Zombie” activity and a coming “Zombie Apocalypse”.
In this part of our study, let’s examine the Bible references that we previously mentioned to see whether any of them speak of Zombie activity (when we keep them in their proper context)…
There are the verses we looked at in part 1, that appear to speak of Zombie activity, now and in the last days….
- Zech 14:12-15 (KJV) – And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance. And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.
- The Context: If we look at the entire chapter of Zechariah 14 we learn that this chapter is describing Christ’s second coming with His saints (vs 1-11) and the final destruction of the enemies of God’s people that will take place following His coming. (vs 12-15) and the eternal worship of God that takes place (vs 16-21). This helps us to understand that God’s final judgment that falls will be sudden, swift, and complete.
- Mark 5:1-5 – And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
- The Context: Here, we are clearly told that this man was possessed with an evil spirit (Mark 5:2). This was the cause of His perverted acts. We also find that this man finds miraculous healing and release from the demon possession in the power and grace of the Lord. This healing resulted in Him being restored to His right mind and once again living a normal life among the people of the city (vs 13-20)
- Ps 27:1-5 [A Psalm] of David. The LORD [is] my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, [even] mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this [will] I [be] confident. One [thing] have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
- The Context: Here David is describing those who are called “wicked”, “mine enemies” and “my foes”. These were those who were within his kingdom who wanted him removed from the throne and defeated permanently. He describes their attitude towards him as wanting to “eat up my flesh”. In other words, they wanted him destroyed for their own personal gain… much like an animal is slain to give nourishment to those who killed and then ate its flesh. Notice a part of their actions against him involved them encamping against him and creating a war against him. This is a far cry from mindless Zombies seeking out who they may eat. Also please keep in mind this is an account of an historical event. Not only the Bible, but many other historical sources speak of rebellion and mutiny taking place among the followers of David. Even David’s son, Absalom, turned against His father and, with the aid of his army, chased David from his throne and sought to take his life. (2 Sam 15: – 2 Sam 18:) There is absolutely no historical sources that speak of a Zombie uprising in the days of David.
- Ezek 37:1-14 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which [was] full of bones, And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, [there were] very many in the open valley; and, lo, [they were] very dry. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. Again he said unto me, prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD. So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but [there was] no breath in them. Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army. Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. And ye shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves, And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken [it], and performed [it], saith the LORD.
- The Context: First of all, please notice this is not an actual event but it is a vision that Ezekiel is receiving from God (vs 1). The message of this vision is explained in vs 9-10 and 11-13. Here, we find that as Ezekiel would preach to the nation of Judah, they would respond to His message and Jehovah would send a great revival to the land and graciously allow them to return from the Babylonian captivity that they were currently experiencing. This return from captivity is pictured by dry bones being brought back to life as the result of Ezekiel’s preaching. Those who were rebellious and “dead” to Jehovah, would be brought back to their land to experience a relationship with God once again. Keep in mind death is a reference to separation, in this case, separation from God Almighty due to sin. Life is a picture of restoration and communion, in this case renewed communion with Jehovah that stems from repentance at the message of Ezekiel.
- Matt 27:51-53 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
- The Context: This event took place immediately following the crucifixion of Christ on the cross. Please keep in mind, other resurrections from the dead have taken place throughout Bible history…. (1 Kng 17:21-24, 2 Kng 4:32-35, 2 Kng 13:20-21, John 11:43-44, Luke 7:12-17, Mrk 5:39-40, Acts 20:9-12, Acts 9:36-43) All of these resurrections involve dead people whose physical bodies are brought out of the tomb and reunited with their eternal spirit. They were human beings with body, soul and spirit (including all their mental faculties) who would later die, just as all other fallen men would die. The resurrection of Matt 27 is no exception to this type of resurrection. There is absolutely no reason to believe that this resurrection involved any type of Zombie activity whatsoever. Why did this resurrection take place? It was clear proof that Christ had gained victory over the death and was the source of life for all who believe in Him. (1 Cor 15:21-26, Heb 2:14-15) This resurrection is both proof and a picture of the future resurrection of all of God’s people (1 Thess 4:13-18) This multiple resurrection was one of the greatest of proofs of His death through which we can receive eternal life and His great power as the Sovereign Lord over all, even death itself.
- Gal 5:13-15 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
- The Context: In the context of these verses we are speaking of the need for God’s people to keep the moral law of God to have a proper testimony in the eyes of the lost world. Although we have been granted freedom from the penalty and bondage of the law we are to still keep the moral law of God as a testimony of His holiness. Paul, teaches us that by loving our neighbor as we should it will guarantee we treat them as the law instructs us. But if we do not love others as we should, then we will be abusing them. This abuse described as… “ye bite and devour one another”. Biting here is speaking of harming and causing pain to others, while devouring speaks of using others for our own personal gain. It is clear, contextually, that the biting and devouring is simply symbolic of abusing and selfishly using others.
- Ps 53:4-5 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people [as] they eat bread: they have not called upon God. There were they in great fear, [where] no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth [against] thee: thou hast put [them] to shame, because God hath despised them.
- The Context: Here we find that the lost of the world selfishly treat God’s people attempting to misuse them for their own personal gain. Although the wicked abuse God’s people as if they will never face judgment for their actions, someday they will fear and be put to shame because God will judge them in the last days.
- Job 31:29-32 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. The stranger did not lodge in the street: [but] I opened my doors to the traveller.
- The Context: Job is describing those who had opposed him during his prosperous years. Job is declaring he had committed no unconfessed sin that would merit the trials that he was facing. Job proves that he treats others justly by referring to those who served Him in His household. He tells us that those servants and stewards that were the closest to him supported him and was sympathetic towards him. They did not oppose Job, nor desired to take advantage of Him. He had treated them fairly and with kindness; therefore, they did not say “Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied” Picturing abusive treatment to gain selfishly from Job.
- Isa 26:19-20 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
- The Context: This section of Scripture is speaking of the resurrection of the believer’s body immediately prior to the Lord’s judgment falling upon the lost. (1 Cor 15:20-28) This same resurrection is described in Rev 14:15-19 as the first harvest, with the second harvest picturing the Lord’s wrath then falling upon lost mankind.
Summary of our study so far….
In this part of our study we have seen that when we keep all of the “Zombie” verses in the context of God’s Word we find that NONE of them are actually speaking of Zombies. Folks, there is a very mighty lesson to be learned in this study. The importance of keeping verses in context cannot be overemphasized. As far as I am concerned keeping verses in their proper context is the MOST IMPORTANT rule to follow in Biblical interpretation. Most, if not all of the false teachings found within Christendom is the direct result of misapplying and misunderstanding verse due to an improper understanding of their context.
By the way, before I forget, there is one other verse we looked at in our previous study that I need to address. Remember I made the comment that “Since we have a three-fold affirmation of Zombie activity isn’t that enough to prove they exist? According to the Bible… “a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (Eccl 4:12).
In this example, once again, on purpose, I used a verse out of context. When Eccl 4:12 makes the statement that “a threefold cord cannot be easily broken”, it is not referring to three pieces of evidence being infallible proof of a theory. It is actually saying that a man who is involved in a conflict, if he has three friends, is almost invincible. How do we know this is the true meaning to the verse? Listen to the verses in context…
Eccl 4:9-12 – “Two [are] better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him [that is] alone when he falleth; for [he hath] not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm [alone]? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
In this part of our study we have seen a very important point. Verses must be kept in the context of the rest of the Bible for us to come to the correct understanding of their meaning.
Ending thoughts before Part #3…
But there is another very important point that we have learned. There are NO verses in the Bible that refer to Zombies or a coming Zombie Apocalypse. If that is so, then the next logical question is this… how do we explain all the perverted events reported in the news that were being attributed to Zombie activity. If there are no Zombies what is going on?
In the last part of our study we will try to see some possible explanations that the Bible gives us for the current supposed “Zombie” activity that is taking place in the fallen world around us.
May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

The Coming Zombie Apocalypse Part 1
What is a Zombie? Do they exist? If so, what does the Bible teach about the coming Zombie apocalypse? Let’s begin this posting by answer these questions…
First of all, what is a “zombie’?
Based upon the definition found on several different “Zombie” websites, a zombie is identified as having these basic attributes:
- They are human beings who physically die
- Within a few hours of their death, they are reanimated
- This reanimation is caused by a virus that reactivates portions of the brain
- They are known for feeding on the flesh of animals and humans
- They are well described by a publication of The Center For Disease Control. They have published a “How To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse Manual”. You can learn much more about Zombies in this handbook. You can download it here at: http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies_novella.htm
Secondly, do Zombies exist?
Well just look at the news and you will find ample evidence of Zombie-like behavior:
- A man attacked another man by using his teeth to rip apart his face on May 26, 2012 in Miami, Fla. http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/state/miami-zombie-causeway-cannibal-attack-by-rudy-eugene-the-start-of-bath-salts-upswing-experts-say#ixzz1yBBusxeL
- A man, after being arrested for DUI, was taken to the hospital where he proceeded to bite a nurse and attacked other hospital staff threatening to eat their faces off. http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/state/zombie-cannibal-attacks-continue-naples-man-bites-nurse-threatens-to-eat-faces-cops-say#ixzz1yBCaEE6Q

Thirdly, what does the Bible teach about the coming Zombie apocalypse?
There are plenty of verses that appear to speak of coming Zombie activity in the last days….
- Mark 5:1-5 – And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

10. And several more passages that seem to refer to Zombie-like activity.
Summary of our study so far….
By answering these questions we have seen three different pieces of information that seem to refer to the actual existence of Zombies…. The CDC publication, the various news reports of Zombie-like activity, and, of course, the many Bible verses that seem to describe Zombies wreaking havoc on the earth.
With all of these, we have already laid the ground-work which could prove that Zombie activity actually exists. Many of these also seem to teach us that Zombies will play an active role in end time events. Since we have a three-fold affirmation of Zombie activity isn’t that enough to prove they exist? According to the Bible… “a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (Eccl 4:12).
Ending thoughts before Part #2…
Now let’s consider one more verse before we begin our in-depth study of the “Zombie” verses we looked at above. The verse I want us to study is a verse that literally says that “There is no God” (Psa 14:1)… This should prove to us all that God does not exist.
For anyone that is familiar with this Scripture, I can hear you screaming at me through your computer. Why do you so violently disagree with what I just said? It is because you know the context of this verse.
What I said above was the truth. The Bible does say that “there is no God”. However, in context the verse reads, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God”. Boy that really changes things doesn’t it? Instead of the Bible affirming that God does not exist, it is actually stating the exact opposite. The Bible is saying that anyone who claims God does not exist is a fool. To deny God’s existence is to deny what is absolutely true. A person must be a fool to hold such a belief.
Folks, we can make the Bible teach absolutely anything we would like, if we take a verse out of context. I have just proven that with the example of Psa 14:1.
Keeping that principle in mind, it is time for us to look at these “Zombie verses”.
In Part #2 of our series we will study these verses in great detail, but we will be careful to study their context…
You know, it may be possible that we may be onto some new revelation that no one else has ever seen in the Bible! Just maybe, we will see that there is a coming Zombie Apocalypse and that we must prepare now for that coming day… or perhaps, we will find that when all these “Zombie” verses are taken in context, they are clearly speaking of something other than Zombies. Only time and the context of God’s Word will tell us what these verses teach… until next time…
May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

Coming this weekend… a 3 part series on the “Zombie” attacks that have been taking place throughout the world…. What does the Bible say about them? What lessons can we learn from them? Is a Zombie Apocalypse a part of the end times prophecies?
SIH’s Think On These Things: Healing The Bethsaida Blind Man
The next miracle in our series is Healing The Bethsaida Blind Man …This miracle is recorded for us in Mark 8:22-26
In this miraculous healing by Christ, we have a very different method used to perform this healing from all the others we have studied so far. Note how the performance of this miracle is described: “And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.”
One of the obvious questions that comes to mind is Why? Why, did He choose to heal this man in such an unorthodox way? It is obvious, Christ could have simply spoken the Word and this man would have been healed but He did it another way. The Bible does not address why He did things this way, all I can do is share with you what has been placed on my heart without being able to “prove” this is His purpose through the Scriptures.
I believe that the method Christ employed in this healing is representative of His work of salvation. This work of salvation results in the lost man’s spiritually blinded eyes being opened and understanding of the things of God.
Let’s take each point one at a time:
- This man is brought to Christ by others… the evangelization of this lost man by Christians.
- This man is blind … his blindness to the things of God.
- The desire of those who bring him is for Christ to touch him…. Christians are unable to save the lost but must totally rely on Christ’s intervention.
- Christ takes the hand of the blind man and leads him out of town – Christ now begins to work in this man life bringing him to Himself by removing all the hindrances of the lost world.
- Christ spit on his eyes… the application of the Word (proceeding from His mouth)
- Christ put His hands upon him …. The operation of the Spirit applying the Word
- He asked him if he saw as he ought …. Christ shows the man his spiritual need as the Word is received MENTALLY and begins to take effect in His life.
- He answers he saw men as trees walking …. a lost man who has received God’s word sees his need and the remedy Christ, without actually being given clear sight and understanding. This is how Christ called us prior to regeneration, through conviction and the revelation of Himself.
- Christ then touches Him, rubbing in the spittle… the effectual call to salvation, as Christ applies the Word to the HEART and SPIRIT, bringing us to Himself and working repentance and belief.
- This man now sees clearly… picturing the opening of his blinded eyes, as a new creature in Christ, able to understand and clearly see the things of God in His Word.
If we are saved, let us stop and think back to our salvation experience and how the Lord intervened in our lives and brought us to Himself. Let us praise and honor Him for working His GREATEST of miracles in our hearts.
If you have never received God’s gracious salvation… look to Him through His Word, come to Him realizing you have sinned and can do nothing to gain salvation of your own merit. Turn from your sin and place your trust in Him. Accept Him not only as your Savior, but the Lord of your life as well. This is what genuine, God-given salvation is all about.
May the Lord bless each one of us as we “Think On These Things”.
