Applying Wisdom To Our Desires, Plans and Actions…

SIH HALTAL ICONMakes Our Lives Beneficial and Beautiful In The Eyes Of Others….

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.  Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.  When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.  (Proverbs 3:21-24)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Wisdom & Understanding:  Prov 3:21-24

21) My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
22) So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
23) Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
24) When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

INTRODUCTION:

We now continue by looking at several proverbs that address the proper relationship we should have towards the blessings of wisdom and understanding.  In this section we will be looking at the confidence that is gained through wisdom and understanding.

EXPOSITION:

21) My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
Living a confident life of wisdom and understanding begins by:
1.  Constant acknowledgment and consideration of the principles of wisdom and understanding and the authority they hold over us.
2.  Safeguarding wisdom and discretion by holding their principles close to our heart (desires) and mind (thoughts) and conduct (actions).
(note: Wisdom is the application of God’s truths to our actions and lifestyles.  Discretion is applying God’s truths to our future plans and goals)

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”  (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

22) So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
The results of retaining wisdom, understanding and discretion are:
1.  eternal life with God which results in purpose and meaning to our physical existence on earth.  Much like a healthy body which provides and enhances strength, motivation and composure.
2.  an appealing appearance to others through a display of the fruits of the Spirit (kindness, graciousness, generosity and dependability etc).   Much like a necklace which beautifies our appearance.

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.   Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:  So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.”   (Proverbs 3:1-4)

23) Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
When we possess the certainty of eternal life, along with living a physical life of purpose and of benefit to others, we can confidently expect to enjoy spiritual security and physical safety.  A wise life is proof of our spiritual security in Christ and will help us to avoid many pitfalls and troubles in this life that lead to physical harm and unrest.

The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.  Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth [him with] his hand.”   (Psalms 37:23-24)

24) When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet
Living a wise life also leads to a clear conscience before God and man.  This, in turn, results in a confident and peaceful earthly existence, knowing we are right with both God and those with whom we have come into contact.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. (Psalms 4:8)

SUMMARY:

The experience of confidence in this physical life is a wonderful blessing given by Almighty God.  Just stop and think about what a gift it is to know our eternity is secure in Him, our time of life on earth has meaning and lasting value, and our actions are advantageous to others.

These are just a few of the blessings that result from retaining wisdom, understanding and discretion in our lives. May we all keep these Godly principles in our hearts, minds and actions, and enjoy the fruit of confidence and security that result from them.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

We Have Proof Of The Lord’s Wisdom…

SIH HALTAL ICONBy His Creation and Preservation of Nature Around Us!

The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.   By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. (Proverbs 3:19-20)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Wisdom & Understanding:  Prov 3:19-20

19) The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. 20) By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

INTRODUCTION:

We now continue by looking at several proverbs that address the proper relationship we should have towards the blessings of wisdom and understanding.  In this section we will be looking at the author of all wisdom.

EXPOSITION:

19) The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
Solomon now gives us proof-positive that our Lord is the Originator of all wisdom.  His proof for us is founded in nature, which is the indisputable witness of God as the ultimate Source of all wisdom.  Solomon, through divine inspiration, proves this truth through three examples of God’s interaction with nature around us…
1.  The creation and preservation of the earth.  God set in place all the elements of nature causing them to exist and work together harmoniously.
2.  The creation and preservation of the heavens.  God set up, ordered, and aligned the heavens so that they would exist and be maintained under His guiding hand.

“He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.”  (Jeremiah 51:15)

Both the existence and upholding of the earth and the heavens is proof of His great wisdom and understanding.

“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all:… “(Psalms 104:24)

20) By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
3.   The great flood during Noah’s day.  The Lord caused the fountains of the earth to bring forth water and the clouds to send forth rain for the first time in history.  Both of these worked in unity to bring about His desired goal… the overflowing of the world by water.

“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”  (Genesis 7:11)

SUMMARY:

Let’s never take nature for granted.  It is a living witness of the knowledge, understanding and wisdom of its Creator.  As we look at His wonderful interaction with His creation, let’s always keep in mind that it was through His great wisdom that these all came into existence.  And it is through this same wisdom that they continue to be maintained and used by Him for His glory.

The Possessor of this great creative, maintaining wisdom is now offering His wisdom to us.  By His grace, as we search His Word, we can receive that wisdom, and in doing so, we will enhance both our physical and spiritual life.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

The Great Benefits Of Wisdom….

SIH HALTAL ICONShe [is] more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.  Length of days [is] in her right hand; [and] in her left hand riches and honour.  Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, and all her paths [are] peace.  She [is] a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy [is every one] that retaineth her.  (Proverbs 3:15-18)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Wisdom & Understanding:  Prov 3:15-18

15) She [is] more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16) Length of days [is] in her right hand; [and] in her left hand riches and honour.
17) Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, and all her paths [are] peace.
18) She [is] a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy [is every one] that retaineth her.

INTRODUCTION:

We now continue by looking at several proverbs that address the proper relationship we should have towards the blessings of wisdom and understanding.

EXPOSITION:

15) She [is] more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Wisdom is, once again, pictured as a woman.  In the courrent context this is because of a woman’s great value, honorable nature and peaceful demeanor.  In this example we can see the great value given to women by the Word of God.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price [is] far above rubies.”   (Proverbs 31:10)

Here, we are told that wisdom:
1. is worth much more than perfectly round, treasured gems.
2. is on a higher level than anything this earth can offer.

Why is wisdom described as being of such great value?   It is because of the vast multitude of benefits that she offers to anyone who will receive and apply her teachings.

“There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge [are] a precious jewel.”   (Proverbs 20:15)

16) Length of days [is] in her right hand; [and] in her left hand riches and honour.

The benefits of wisdom include:
1. long life
2. spiritual and physical wealth
3. influence and esteem

“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”   (1 Timothy 4:8)

“Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;  And ye are Christ’s; and Christ [is] God’s.  (1 Corinthians 3:21-23)

17) Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, and all her paths [are] peace.
4.  beautifies and graces lifestyles
5.  unity, peace and harmony

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9)

 18) She [is] a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy [is every one] that retaineth her.
6.  gives eternal life when embraced and held tightly
7.  happiness when obtained and followed closely

“A wholesome tongue [is] a tree of life:…” (Proverbs 15:4)

SUMMARY:

What should the relationship be between a Christian and wisdom?  Wisdom should be highly valued due to the many eternal, and temporal, blessings that she brings into the lives of those who embrace her.  Do we find ourselves devaluing, or taking for granted God’s wisdom?  If so, let’s stop and count the many wonderful blessings that flow from her teachings.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

How Valuable Is Wisdom to You?

SIH HALTAL ICONHappy [is] the man [that] findeth wisdom, and the man [that] getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it [is] better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. (Proverbs 3:13-14)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Wisdom/Understanding:  Prov 3:13-14

Happy [is] the man [that] findeth wisdom, and the man [that] getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it [is] better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

INTRODUCTION:

We now continue by looking at several proverbs that address the proper relationship we should have towards the blessings of wisdom and understanding.

EXPOSITION:

13) Happy [is] the man [that] findeth wisdom, and the man [that] getteth understanding.
Keep in mind..
1.  Wisdom is the exercised when God’s Word is applied to our day to day life.
2.  Understanding is discernment and insight into the principles of God’s Word.
In this text, the Hebrew word translated “happy” means “to be blessed”.  This explains why those who possess wisdom and  understanding are happy people… they have received these two wonderful, undeserved blessings from Almighty God.

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it [seemed] great unto me:  [There was] a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:  Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.  Then said I, Wisdom [is] better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom [is] despised, and his words are not heard.  The words of wise [men are] heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.  Wisdom [is] better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.”   (Ecclesiastes 9:13-18)

14) For the merchandise of it [is] better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
The great value of the blessings of wisdom and understanding are addressed in this proverb.  Their value is ….
1.  greater than the profits made from the selling of fine silver.
2.  greater than the revenue received from the sale of fine gold.

“But where shall wisdom be found? and where [is] the place of understanding?   Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.  The depth saith, It [is] not in me: and the sea saith, [It is] not with me.  It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed [for] the price thereof.  It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.  The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it [shall not be for] jewels of fine gold.  No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom [is] above rubies.  The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.”  (Job 28:12-19)

SUMMARY:

We should highly value the precious gifts of wisdom and understanding.   They are undeserved blessings that enable us to live lives pleasing to our Lord.  Their value to us cannot be overestimated.  Let us all live happy lives in appreciation for these wonderful blessings that God Almighty has given to us.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Marriage Divorce and Remarriage Part 2 of 6 Part Series

SIH HALTAL ICONDoes God Allow Divorce and Remarriage?

Deut 24 1) When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give [it] in her hand, and send her out of his house.  2) And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s [wife].  3) And [if] the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth [it] in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her [to be] his wife;  4) Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that [is] abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance.

Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage (2) : Divorce and Remarriage

SIH STSTA ICONMal 2:13-16 (KJV)

13) And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth [it] with good will at your hand.  14) Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet [is] she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.  15) And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.  16) For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for [one] covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

As one of the most important institutions that the Lord established, marriage is a very important subject that Christians need to understand and honor.  In this series we will be looking at:

  1. What we need to know about marriage to understand divorce.
  2. The definition, allowance and purpose of divorce and allowance of remarriage.
  3. The Biblical grounds for divorce (fornication).
  4. The Biblical grounds for divorce (loss of favour).
  5. The Biblical grounds for divorce (departure).
  6. A Summary Of Our Study and Closing Thoughts

What does the Bible mean when it speaks of divorce?
Does God allow divorce?
If God allows divorce, what is His purpose in this allowance?
Does God allow remarriage following divorce?

Folks, these are very important and, in some ways, complicated questions that we are about to attempt to answer.  For some, our beliefs have been based upon a personal study of God’s Word and we have become convinced of our beliefs by the Holy Spirit.  It is to this group that I have a great deal of respect as you have sought to come to your conclusions based upon the Word and the leading of the holy Spirit.

There are many others who have simply accepted what they have heard taught about this complicated subject and have accepted the teachings of man without ever searching the Scriptures and becoming convinced of their beliefs by the indwelling Spirit of God.  To this group I would like to send a friendly reminder… we are all responsible to study these things on our own.  If we are saved and, therefore, have the Spirit of God within us we have the ability to understand these truths and be assured of their validity Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.”  2Pet 1:20-21 (KJV)

It is of this spirit that I begin this study on this very difficult subject.  It is not to attempt to persuade anyone of my beliefs.  It is only to share with you what I believe God’s Word teaches us, with an understanding that you will pursue your own study of this subject and, through the leadership of the Spirit, come to your own convictions on this subject.  My one plea is for you to not continue to accept anyone’s beliefs (including my own) without doing your own, personal, study of this subject.

Far too often this subject has been confused and perverted, causing some to believe that which is not true.  There can only be one set of teachings that are true.  The existence of many different views on this subject proves that there is much false teaching that is being accepted as truth.

Let’s continue our study by attempting to answer some of the questions we have posed in the beginning paragraphs of this introduction.  I will be answering these questions as simply as possible by making reference to Bible verses and allowing them to speak for themselves.

THE SCRIPTURES:

Deut 24 1-4;  Mal 2:13-16;  Matt 5:27-32;  Matt 19:3-9;  Mark 10:2-12;  Luke 16:18;
1Cor 7:10-16;  1Cor 7:39-40

THE STUDY:

QUESTION #1 – What does the Bible mean when it speaks of divorce?

The Bible uses several different terms to describe divorce:

1. Divorcement –  This term helps us to understand that the divorce is the act of destroying, or removing the marital covenant resulting in the covenant being rendered void and going out of existence. Note some of the meanings of this term are : to destroy, to consume, and to remove.

OT – kriythuwth – to cut off, to destroy, to consume – Deu 24:1,3; Isa 50:1
NT – apostasion – to separate, to remove, to withdrawl – Matt 5:31; Matt 19:7; Mark 10:4

2. To put away – This term helps us to understand that once a divorce occurs each party is relieved of the obligations of that covenant.  Note some of the definitions of the term in relationship to the marital covenant… the covenant is “withdrawn”, the covenantal responsibilities are “forsaken” and “sent away”, the covenant is “undone”, “laid aside”, and “plucked away”.   The parties of the covenant are “loosed” from their responsibilities to fulfill the covenant.  They are “pardoned’ in the sense of released from further obligation.  They are given “leave” of their obligations.

OT – yatsa’ – to go out, to come out, to depart, to withdrawl, – Ezra 10:3, 19;
OT – shalach – to send away, to leave, to depart, to forsake – Isa 50:1; Jer 3:1;
OT – cuwr – to turn off, to lay aside, to be undone, to pluck away – Jer 4:1
NT – apoluo – to release, to loose, to pardon, to depart – Matt 5:31,32,19:3,8,9;  Mark 2:10,11,12; Luke 16:18,
NT – aphiemi – to send forth, to forgive, to omit, to leave – 1 Cor 7:11

3.  To put asunder – This term helps us to see that a divorce is placing a separation between the parties of the covenant.  Because the covenant is destroyed the relationship between the parties no longer exists… they are now “separated” from one another.  Before they were “united” and now they are “pulled apart” and “room is placed between them”.

OT – None
NT – chorizo – to pull apart, to separate, to place room between – Matt 19:6, Mark 10:9

4. To send out – This term used to express the act of the divorcer against the divorcee.  The one who decides the divorce (whether scriptural or not) is the one who is “pushing away” their spouse, they are “departing” from their spouse, it is as if they are “shooting out their spouse” from the relationship to which they had entered.

OT – shalach – to send away, to send out, to push away, to let depart, to shoot out – Deut 24:1,3

ANSWER:  Based upon our look at the terms for the act of divorce in the Bible we can find a very simple, yet, important definition for “divorce”….

Scripturally, divorce is the declaration that a marital covenant has been destroyed resulting in the removal of the obligations of the covenant and a separation of the parties who had been united by the covenant.  This act of divorce is based upon the actions and decisions of the parties of the covenant bringing upon them the responsibility for the rupturing of the marital union.

QUESTION #2 – Does God allow divorce?

Due to Loss of Favour (or Hatred)
Deut 24
1) When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give [it] in her hand, and send her out of his house.

Due to Fornication
Matt 5:27-32 (KJV)
27) Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:  28) But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.  29) And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.  30) And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.  31)  It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:  32) But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
(Matt 19:3-9, Mark 10:3-12)

Due to Departure
1Cor 7:10-16 (KJV)
10) And unto the married I command, [yet] not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from [her] husband:  11) But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to [her] husband: and let not the husband put away [his] wife.  12) But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.  13) And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.  14) For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.  15) But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such [cases]: but God hath called us to peace.  16) For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save [thy] husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save [thy] wife?

ANSWER:Based upon the above verses, in both Testaments, we find that divorce is allowed in some cases.  Those cases are “loss of favour”, “fornication”, and “departure”

QUESTION #3:– What is God’s purpose in allowing divorce?

Matt 19:3-9 (KJV) – protection of the innocent – “hardness of heart”…
3) The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?  4) And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made [them] at the beginning made them male and female,  5) And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?  6) Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.  7) They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?  8) He saith unto them,  Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.  9) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except [it be] for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (Mark 10:3-12)

Note the hardness of heart shown by  “finds no favour” and “hate her”
Deut 24
1) When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give [it] in her hand, and send her out of his house.  2) And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s [wife].  3) And [if] the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth [it] in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her [to be] his wife;  4) Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that [is] abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance.

hardness of heart shown by  “dealt treacherously” and “violence” against spouse
Malachi 2

ANSWER: God allows divorce to protect the hated party of the marital agreement from abuse and mistreatment due to the hardness (hatred) of a spouse’s heart.Malachi describes this as “dealing treacherously” with a person’s spouse.

QUESTION #4:–  Does God allow remarriage following divorce?

The allowance – she may go and be another man’s wife
Deut 24:1-4

The allowance – let him give her a writing of divorcement (this allowed her to remarry)…. That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery (if fornication is present, remarriage DOES NOT CAUSE ADULTERY)…
Matt 5:28-32
28) But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Matt 19:3-9)

The allowance – a brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases.
1Cor 7:10-16

ANSWER:  In both Testaments, the Lord allows for remarriage following divorce in the cases of “loss of favour”, “fornication” and “departure”.

As we can clearly see, to understand the Bible teachings concerning divorce and remarriage we must come to an understanding of the Biblical grounds of “loss of favour”, “fornication” and “departure”.  As we continue our study we will be looking at which each one involves by taking a more detailed look at several of the passages we have referenced in this study.

SUMMARY:

What we have seen so far can be summarized as follows:

In lesson #1:
1. Marriage is a covenant relationship
2. The parties of the covenant are the husband and wife
3. God is the witness to the making of the covenant, He is not a party in the covenant
4. God as witness will hold each party accountable to keep the promise they made to each other.
5. Marriage is described as a “cleaving” and a “one-flesh” relationship
6. Both of these descriptions imply a closeness, unity and intimacy between the couple
7. The marriage union SHOULD NOT BE broken by man but CAN BE broken by man.
8. Man’s responsibility in a marriage union can be summarized as “to love” and “to nourish” and “to cherish” the wife
9. Woman’s responsibility in a marriage union can be summarized as “to be a help meet” and “to be a companion” to the husband.

In lesson #2:
1.   Divorce is the act of destroying, or removing the marital covenant resulting in the covenant being rendered void and going out of existence. The parties of the covenant are held responsible for the breaking of it.
2.   Divorce is allowed in cases of “loss of favour”, “fornication”, or “departure”
3.   God allows divorce to protect the innocent party from abuse and mistreatment.
4.   God allows for remarriage following divorce in the cases of “loss of favour”, “fornication” and “departure”

As we continue our study, we need to try to remember the above points about marriage and divorce.  In our next lesson we will be continuing to look at God’s teachings on divorce.

Saturday Scripture

SIH HALTAL ICONWe Are Going Higher… to our Heavenly Country!

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.  (Hebrews 11:13-16)

Making It Plain: “Pneumatology” = The Study of The Holy Spirit

SIH TOTT ICONPneumatology comes from two Greek words:
1. “pneuma” which means “spirit”
2. “logos” which means “word concerning, to discuss, to study”.

This term is not used in the Scriptures.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.  (1 John 5:7)

The discipline that proceeds from the Lord….

.SIH HALTAL ICON..is ALWAYS for our good and His glory!

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:   For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Chastening:  Prov 3:11-12

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth.

 INTRODUCTION:

Solomon now gives us proverbs that help us to understand the proper attitude we should have as we received chastening at the hand of our Lord.  Please keep in mind that the divine chastening of the people of God is not only an Old Testament concept, but a New Testament concept as well (1 Cor 11:32, Hebrews 12:4-11, Rev 3:19).

EXPOSITION:

11) My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
Solomon reminds his students of his love and concern for them before he addresses this very important, but unpopular, subject.

The chastening hand of the Lord has two aspects…
1. they are warnings and discipline that is meant to reveal our errors (chastening)
2. they are arguments and motivations to turn us back to the right path (correction)
The discipline that is meted out by the Lord is for our good. He is turning us from a harmful path upon which we are traveling and turning us back to a path that is beneficial for us.

Realizing that the Lord is working for our good, our attitude should be:
1. we should not quickly brush off and ignore His discipline (despise)
2. we should not tire quickly under His hand of discipline for we will reap benefits if we endure (weary)
(Note: the word “weary” is from a Hebrew word for the harvest season of Summer.  The idea is that the harvesters did not give into their weariness they would be able to receive a full harvest of the crops.  If they tired too quickly the harvest would not be brought to completion.)

“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory;”  (2 Corinthians 4:16-17)

12) For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth.

The motive behind the discipline coming from the Lord is…
1.  His love for His people. (loveth)
2.  His parental concern for those who are no longer debtors to Him. (the son… delighteth)

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?”  (Hebrews 12:5-7)

SUMMARY:

When we realize the Lord’s discipline is for our good and proceeds from a heart of love and concern for us, we should accept His discipline seriously and allow it to work completely in us.  By doing this we will reap all the blessings of the discipline that were intended for us.

“For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.  But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.”   (1 Corinthians 11:31-32)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

When We Give Our All To The Lord…

SIH HALTAL ICON…We are saving up for the future!

Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:  So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.  (Proverbs 3:9-10)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 3:9-10

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To Our Possessions:  Prov 3:9-10

9) Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

10) So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

INTRODUCTION:

Solomon has given us proverbs to teach us concerning our relationships with God’s Word (vs 1-4) and God Himself (vs 5-8).  He now shares with us proverbs concerning our relationship with our earthly possessions…

EXPOSITION:

 9) Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Giving the Lord the ultimate level of respect can be shown by…
1.  making an offering of all earthly wealth to Him
2.  giving Him the best, most valuable of our gain
By making all our worldly possessions available to the Lord, causes others to take the Lord and His desires very seriously.

Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for [your] food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)  Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.  For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;  Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for [your] liberal distribution unto them, and unto all [men] (2 Corinthians 9:10-13)

10) So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Turning all our possessions over for His use results in…
1.  replenished storehouses
2.  overflowing winepresses

Both of the above are symbolic of two basic principles:
1.  a shortage of material supplies will never result from the offering of our wealth to the Lord.
2.  as we offer our wealth to Him, He will grace us with abundant spiritual blessings and satisfaction of our material needs (as long as the meeting of our needs benefits us spiritually).

I have been young, and [now] am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. (Psalms 37:25)
“Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor [thy] rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.  But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:  And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.”   (Luke 14:12-14)

SUMMARY:

By turning over all of our worldly possessions for His use, He will grace us with the supply of our earthlly needs as well as overflowing spiritual blessings.

May we all recognize His ability to supply all of our needs, thereby motivating us to offer all our possessions to be used as He sees fit.  In doing so, let us all realize His blessed promise of overflowing blessings throughout eternity.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

As we completely trust the Lord ….

SIH HALTAL ICON…and He will guide us throughout our lives!

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. (Proverbs 3:5-8)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To The Lord:  Prov 3:5-8

5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7) Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

8) It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

INTRODUCTION:

After looking at proverbs that addressed our relationship with the Word of God (vs1-4), Solomon now shares with us proverbs that will enhance our relationship with the Lord…

EXPOSITION:

5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
1.  Sincere, absolute reliance upon the Lord and His directions.
2.  Not leaning upon human discernment for guidance.
3.  In every area of life recognize His authority and His desires.
4.  He will graciously reveal the route which is to be traveled.
Depending upon the Lord’s will for life instead of fleshly reasoning, along with active submission to His will, facilitates His leadership for life.

Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3)
O LORD, I know that the way of man [is] not in himself: [it is] not in man that walketh to direct his steps.  (Jeremiah 10:23)
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”  (Psalms 32:8)

7) Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
1.  Recognize the inability for self-guidance.
2.  Acknowledge His authority, ability, sinlessness and chastening hand.
3.  Lay aside wickedness.
Recognizing our helplessness and His absolute control and holiness should motivate us to put off sin.

Woe unto [them that are] wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!”  (Isaiah 5:21)
Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.What man [is he that] desireth life, [and] loveth [many] days, that he may see good?  Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.  Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”  (Psalms 34:11-14)

8) It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
The results of keeping the above (vs 5-7) instructions…
1.  the person is made spiritually whole
2.  food for growth is supplied to his being
By doing all these things (vs 5-7) spiritual health and nourishment are attained.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. (Psalms 147:3)

SUMMARY:

On of the great keys to having a close relationship with the Lord is recognizing who He is and who we are.  When we come to an understanding of His importance and our insignificance; His authority and our subordination; His capabilities and our inability, His wisdom and our foolishness, it is only then that we can begin to have a Scriptural, vibrant relationship with Almighty God.

May we all seek the Lord’s enabling grace to have a healthy, growing relationship with Him.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

We Should Hold Fast To The Word of God…

SIH HALTAL ICONAnd Never Let Go!

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:  For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:  So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. (Proverbs 3:1-4)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 3:1-4

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Proverbs Concerning: Our Relationship To God’s Word:  Prov 3:1-4

1) My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

2) For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

3) Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

4) So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

INTRODUCTION:

In chapters 1 and 2, Solomon has emphasized the importance of these proverbs for daily living.  Now Solomon will unveil proverbs concerning different aspects of life.  Solomon begins by sharing proverbs that address our relationship to God’s Word…

EXPOSITION:

1) My son,
Once again, Solomon is addressing us as a loving teacher who is sharing these proverbs to younger students for their benefit.

forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
1.  we are not to misplace God’s standard of morality
2.  we are to sincerely desire to guard and protect the responsibilities He has given to us.
His Word is to be consistently applied to our lives throughout our lifetime.

And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.  My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.”   (Psalms 119:47-48)

2) For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
When we live according to His Words…
1.  days of long length – days in which much can be accomplished for Christ.
2.  a life filled with many years – a long physical life on earth (by treating others well and living moral lawful lives)  and eternal life with the Lord (by coming to faith in Christ and receiving eternal rewards for obedience to Him)
3.  peace, harmony, prosperity during physical life.
His Word will reap blessings upon us both now and in eternity.

“Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.  What man [is he that] desireth life, [and] loveth [many] days, that he may see good?  Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.  Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”   (Psalms 34:11-14)

3) Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
1.  Two main themes of His Word, sacrificial kindness and reliable knowledge, should not be loosened from us
2.  We are to tie them securely to us, not allowing them to slip away
3.  And we are to permanently etch them on our desires so they will be exhibited in our actions
His Word is to be permanently incorporated into our beings, by making them a part of our desires.  This will then cause us to naturally treat others mercifully and apply the truths of the Word to our actions.

All the paths of the LORD [are] mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. (Psalms 25:10)

4) So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
1.  By living merciful lives based upon His truths we will be pleasant and desirable, as well as intelligent and successful.
2.  In all of this we will find approval in the eyes of God and man.
By living according to the principles of His Word results in pleasing lives acceptable to both God and man.

But if thy brother be grieved with [thy] meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.  Let not then your good be evil spoken of:  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  For he that in these things serveth Christ [is] acceptable to God, and approved of men.”   (Romans 14:14-18)

SUMMARY:

May we have a right relationship with the Word.  The Proverbs are God’s Word given to us to be held secure within our minds (mental knowledge) and hearts (etching them upon our desires).   By doing this, God’s Word will become a natural part of our everyday decision making and lifestyle.  When this takes place, we will treat others mercifully and submit ourselves to the will of our Lord.

May we all seek the Lord’s enabling grace to possess a right relationship with God’s Word.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
