He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Recognizing The Importance Of Wisdom: Pro 2:1-4

1) My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

2) So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding;

3) Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, [and] liftest up thy voice for understanding;

4) If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures;

As we begin chapter two, we will see that Solomon will now explain to us the great value of wisdom for our successful Christian walk.  In the beginning portion of this chapter, he explains that, if we place the proper value on wisdom, it will become a high priority for our lives….

1) My son,
Solomon continues teaching his physical son, as well as others whom he possessed love and concern for their well- being. His teachings will be coming from a heart of care as he would share the wisdom of God with his hearers.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:13)

if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
If we hold God’s wisdom in high esteem we will bring it to ourselves and not go past us. And, once we obtain it, we will keep it safe and not allow others to take it from us through false teachings or mockery.

Note: God’s wisdom is described as “words” and “commandments”.  “Words” helps us to understand that it is spoken directly by Him; while “commandments” reminds us that we have been given the responsibility to keep and apply these things to our lives.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

2) So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding;
Our desire to receive and hide His wisdom leads us to purposefully turn our ears towards the His words and turn our desires to recognize it as truth from other false teachings.

Note: Here, it is described as “wisdom” which teaches us the need to apply it to our lives; and ”understanding” which defines God’s wisdom as a tool that should be used to make Godly decisions for our lives.

Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they [are] the rejoicing of my heart.  I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, [even unto] the end.”  (Psalms 119:111-112)

3) Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, [and] liftest up thy voice for understanding;
Do we value His wisdom?  If so, we will loudly, specifically request it from the Lord, recognizing that genuine wisdom only comes from Him.

Note:  In this verse God’s wisdom is described as “knowledge” and “understanding”.  “Knowledge”  because it contains much needed facts that can be used to make Godly decisions (understanding).

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)

4) If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures;
Does our life show that we treasure wisdom as if it were silver or hid treasures?  If so we will find ourselves so greatly desiring wisdom that we search for it to the point of exhaustion?

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as [much as] in all riches.”  (Psalms 119:14)

After seeing that our lives will clearly reflect the importance we place on wisdom.  Let me ask in closing…

How highly do we value the wisdom of God?

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

    I so appreciate you going through the Proverbs, thank you

  2. pj54 says:

    Rob, you know I have often heard the phrases life or parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual, well, whoever started those phrases had not read their Bible. Proverbs and Acts are the two BEST Instruction Manuals a person could need.

    God Bless~

  3. SLIMJIM says:

    Thank you for this exposition

  4. Debbie says:

    Thanks, Pastor Rob, for asking us those direct questions. There is always the pull towards what seems wise in others eyes . .and that isn’t always the wisdom God gives. Praying to keep asking for His wisdom! God bless you!

  5. Tom Raines says:

    Thank you Pastor! These first verses of Proverbs 2 are precious to me. I love the clarity of the steps given here that promises us understanding. Years ago I fell in love with knowing He is showing us the way and just this morning as I knelt before Him these verses were once again shown to provide the way! Blessings to your ministry!

  6. Voices cry out from everywhere in the world, giving their idea of the right way to live – but they mostly lead to destruction. They tear down the principles given by God: principles of the family unit, of training children, of putting God and His will, revealed in His Word first and foremost in our lives.

    Worldly “wisdom” abounds. Thank you for ‘shouting out’ about God’s wisdom and our need to heed it and APPLY it in our daily living.

    Looking forward to our daily feast.
