SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Appeal: Her Truthfulness: Prov 8:5-9
5) O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6) Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips [shall be] right things.
7) For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness [is] an abomination to my lips.
8) All the words of my mouth [are] in righteousness; [there is] nothing froward or perverse in them.
9) They [are] all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

INTRODUCTION:
Solomon uses a series of proverbs to show us that wisdom always speaks the truth. Her message can be relied upon as we face the many differing events that life may hold for us…

EXPOSITION:

5) O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
Those who do not understand the importance of wisdom can be classified into two separate groups:
1. simple ones are speaking of those who are immature believers who have recently come to the truth of salvation, or they are those who, although were saved for quite a while, have never been taught the things concerning wisdom in God’s Word.
2. fools are those who are unsaved, never coming to a knowledge of the truth by rejecting the Word when they are presented with it. They are content in their sin, not seeing their need of wisdom nor the Lord Himself.

The remedy to both these situations is “understanding”. Both those who are immature in the faith, and those who have never come to belief, need to see their true character and the true nature of wisdom. They need to see their need of wisdom and the wondrous blessings that the acquisition of wisdom holds for them.

“Understand, ye brutish among the people: and [ye] fools, when will ye be wise?” (Psalms 94:8)

6) Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips [shall be] right things.
How does someone who is lacking wisdom come to receive her teachings? By…
1. receiving them through reading, preaching or any other method of proclamation
2. giving our attention to them, not simply hearing but then meditation upon the message
3. come to accept them as truthful and reliable
4. and then applying them to the life.
All four of these are differing aspects to “hearing” the message of wisdom.

Her message is described as being:
1. honorable and perfect
2. what is needed, proper and beneficial for the situation at hand

“Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, [even] the hidden [wisdom], which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known [it], they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Corinthians 2:6-8)

7) For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness [is] an abomination to my lips.
Wisdom speaks that which is actual to fact, certain and relable
Wisdom’s lips are disgusted and abhorred by anything that is evil. She refuses to speak these things.

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, [yet] my record is true:… (John 8:14)

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

8) All the words of my mouth [are] in righteousness; [there is] nothing froward or perverse in them.
Wisdom’s message is aligned with the Lord’s commands and will for our lives.
Wisdom’s message does not contain anything that will cause pain or suffering, nor does it distort or twist that which is true and pleasing to God.

“I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth [in] righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” (Isaiah 45:23)

9) They [are] all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
For those people who have matured in the faith and have come to see the true character of her teachings, wisdom is very straightforward, obvious and transparent.
For those who have retained a knowledge of the Lord and His Word, wisdom’s message is a “good fit”, upholding the principles of God’s Word and His desires for each one of us.

“He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.” (Matthew 13:11-12)

SUMMARY:

The truthfulness and reliability of wisdom’s message sets it apart from all the other messages that originate in the sinful world around us. By God’s grace, let us all pursue the acquisition of wisdom, knowing it is a dependable, consistent message that originates from our Lord.

“Where [is] the wise? where [is] the scribe? where [is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:20-21)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
