SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Appeal: Her Value: Prov 8:10-11

10) Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11) For wisdom [is] better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

INTRODUCTION:

Wisdom continues her appeal for others to seek and obtain her by reminding us of her tremendous value…

EXPOSITION:

10) Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
Wisdom compares the value of her teachings to the value of precious metals.  Her conclusion?  Her training’s  value is far greater than that of gold or silver.   That is why she tells us to actively reach out and secure her words.

The law of thy mouth [is] better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.”  (Psalms 119:72)

The fear of the LORD [is] clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD [are] true [and] righteous altogether.  More to be desired [are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: [and] in keeping of them [there is] great reward.”   (Psalms 19:9-11)

11) For wisdom [is] better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Now, she compares the value of her teaching to rubies and, again, finds the value of her teachings superior.
The basic principle is that we are to expend more effort to gain wisdom than to gain anything else we may desire in this world, for wisdom is more valuable than anything else we can possess.

I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.”   (Psalms 119:162)

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as [much as] in all riches.”  (Psalms 119:14)

SUMMARY:

Throughout God’s Word we are told of the great value of wisdom.  Why is it such a valuable commodity?  It is because wisdom leads us to God, salvation and an eternity with Him!

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy [is] understanding.”   (Proverbs 9:10)

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:  Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.”   (Matthew 13:44-46)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Great passages. These two verses are more relevant for today than what some may think,in our materialistic plastic age.

  3. Debbie says:

God bless you, Pastor Rob, as you further show the benefits of wisdom and seeking it! Thank you!

  4. Thanks again Rob. We cannot be over-reminded of the need to pray for wisdom and understanding – especially living in world that has lost its way and is growing darker and darker.
