We Are To Take The Path Of Gracious and Merciful Living…
A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong [men] retain riches. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but [he that is] cruel troubleth his own flesh. The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness [shall be] a sure reward. (Proverbs 11:16-18)

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)
Wisdom’s Great Gain: Showing Grace & Mercy Towards Others: Proverbs 11:16-18
16) A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong [men] retain riches.
17) The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but [he that is] cruel troubleth his own flesh.
18) The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness [shall be] a sure reward.
In this next section of Proverbs, Solomon explains that the necessity and ability to perform acts of grace and mercy is given to us through the application of wisdom.
What is meant by “grace” and “mercy” ?
1. When we speak of treating others graciously, we are describing the act of GIVING that which is BENEFICIAL to those that are UNDESERVING of the benefit.
For example, one way the Lord has graced us is by granting to us forgiveness of our sins when we did not deserve to be forgiven.
2. When we speak of mercy, we are describing the WITHHOLDING of that which is HARMFUL from those who are DESERVING of it.
By way of example, the Lord has shown us mercy by withholding the Lake of Fire from us even though we deserve to spend an eternity there.
EXPOSITION:
16) A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong [men] retain riches.
1. A gracious woman receives, and keeps, the respect, admiration and esteem of others.
2. She is much like a man who obtains, and guards, that which is valuable through the use of physical strength
“Favour [is] deceitful, and beauty [is] vain: [but] a woman [that] feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.” (Proverbs 31:30-31)
17) The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but [he that is] cruel troubleth his own flesh.
1. A man who displays mercy towards others benefits his own physical earthly life. By showing mercy, he is gaining respect, admiration and the friendship of others around him. (Just like the woman described above)
2. A man that is violent, deadly, unforgiving only harms his life on earth. He makes enemies of others, causes grudges to be held against him and causes separation and strife with those around him.
“[Is it] not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I [am]. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And [if] thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness [be] as the noonday: And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And [they that shall be] of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.” (Isaiah 58:7-12)
“Because he hath oppressed [and] hath forsaken the poor; [because] he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not; Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired. There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. [When] he is about to fill his belly, [God] shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain [it] upon him while he is eating. (Job 20:19-23)
18) The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness [shall be] a sure reward.
1. Those that are unforgiving and unloving, guilty and condemned in God’s sight, lead a misleading life of deceit.
2. However, those who lead a life of grace and mercy in actions and speech will certainly receive future blessings for their faithfulness.
“For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:8-9)
SUMMARY:
As the Lord’s children, we are to live lives that exhibit grace and mercy to those around us. In doing so, we are not only setting a good example of kindness and forgiveness, but are also displaying an imperfect image of the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, may we all, through the application of wisdom to our life, display grace and mercy to all those around us. In doing so we will be not only helping others, and securing rewards for our benefit but especially we will be glorifying our Lord Jesus.
May we all choose to speak words of wisdom, knowing that they will result in blessings to both the speaker and the hearers.
By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.
May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 11:15
He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)
Wisdom’s Great Gain: Conscientious Indebtedness: Proverbs 11:15
15) He that is surety for a stranger shall smart [for it]: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
EXPOSITION:
15) He that is surety for a stranger shall smart [for it]: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
1. A person who gives security for a stranger shall be badly scarred as a result.
2. A person who is an enemy of giving security for another can be trusted.
Several points need to be mentioned in the context of the above restrictions:
First of all, we see the need to avoid becoming surety for “a stranger”. Keep in mind, previously, in Proverbs 6:1-5, we saw that suretyship should be avoided in the case of friends and acquaintances as well. This helps us to understand that in ALL situations, becoming a co-signer is a very serious decision that is never to be taken lightly in any way.
Many times, people justify becoming a co-signer on the debt of another by describing it as an act of love and kindness toward the indebted one. However, by refusing to increase indebtedness by becoming surety is also act of love for others because:
1. It is showing love to the borrower –
By denying security for debt, we are encouraging the would-be borrower to think twice about the dangers of indebtedness, and the ramifications that can come from it. It also makes them consider the importance of prioritizing their spending habits and discerning between their “wants” versus “needs”
In many cases, if a person needs someone else to be a “co-signer” on debt, it is because the amount of debt he is taking upon himself is too high. By refusing to guarantee their debt, we are stopping them from taking on excessive debt and risk.
Also, there are times when the necessity of a co-signer can be avoided by patience, Godly labor and prioritizing of finances. By denying security, it is encouraging the would-be borrower to apply these Scriptural principles to their financial situation.
2. It is showing love to those relying upon us –
If we co-sign on a debt we are placing added responsibility and financial requirements upon ourselves. If the indebted one fails to pay their debt, it falls upon us thereby hurting those who are relying upon us for the supply of their needs.
3. It is showing love to other Christians around us –
Wisdom tells us that it is, in most cases, unwise to enter into debt of any kind (Prov 22:7). By refusing to become a co-signer, we are setting a good example for everyone that sees us to be very careful about taking debt upon ourselves and the general use of our finances.
4. It is showing love to the Lord –
By avoiding debt, we are keeping our finances “freed up” to support the work of the Lord being done by His servants. How often are Christians who are loaded down with indebtedness unable to give sacrificially to the Lord as they would desire.
Also, keep in mind, avoiding becoming security for another is an act of obedience (and therefore an act of love and honor) to the Lord.
All of these reasons helps us to understand why Solomon then tells us we are to “hate” becoming a surety.
“A man void of understanding striketh hands, [and] becometh surety in the presence of his friend.” (Proverbs 17:18)
“Take his garment that is surety [for] a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.” (Proverbs 20:16)
“Be not thou [one] of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?” (Proverbs 22:26-27)
SUMMARY:
In the above verse we have seen the very important need to take becoming surety for another a very important decision that in most cases should be avoided. This decision is to be made with a prayerful attitude seeking the Lord’s will and remembering the many ways that refusing to become surety is a declaration of our love for others.
Please remember, if we find ourselves in a situation of becoming surety for another Proverbs 6:1-5 gives detailed instructions of what we are to do to remedy the situation. Please refer to http://wp.me/pU88A-240 for these teachings.
By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.
May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Fear: The Unspoken Enemy
And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king. And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart; And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain. For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people. Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way: Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you. (1Sa 12:19-24)

Oh What A Thing Fear Is!
Ever since I was a you boy at home, I enjoy watching scary movies. John Carpenter’s 1982 movie “The Thing” is at the top of my “favorites” list. It is a movie about scientist’s trapped with an alien in an Arctic research station. The catch is this… the alien can assume the shape and identity of any scientist at the station. You can imagine the basic idea of the movie, the scientists are constantly in fear, not knowing who is human and who is the alien. It is my ideal type of horror movie… not so gross and bloody, but scary.
You might think that I enjoy being afraid. Well, yes and no. Yes, I enjoy being afraid when I know my fear stems from a movie that is simply entertainment. I know in just a few hours, at the close of the movie, everything will be ok. However, when I face fears that exist in reality, I have an opposite reaction to them… I HATE THEM.
One of the most difficult things in life, for me, is to be forced to face my worst fears. The longer I live, the more I am noticing one important truth… my fears are at their worst when I am not thinking about my Lord. Where faith is, fear shrinks away.
Within the confines of Scripture, we can find many principles about how a Christian can get through the fearful times in their life…
THE SCRIPTURE:
THE STUDY:
In our text, the Lord had given the nation of Israel judges to rule over them. A judge had been given the authority from God to enforce the laws of the Lord, but they could not make any new laws. Israel saw that the other nations were ruled by kings. These kings had both the authority to uphold existing laws and to write new laws. Out of jealousy, the Israelites demanded that Samuel place into office a king, so they would be like all other nations. (1 Sam 8:)
It is easy to miss the horrible sin they were committing… by asking for a King, Israel was saying, the laws of God were not sufficient meet their needs, they needed a King who could add to the laws of God. What a horrible attitude to have! No wonder, when they realized what they had done great fear fell upon them.
In our Scripture, we find the basic principles Christians are to follow when faced with fears of any type:
“And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.”
Principle #1 – At times, we bring fearful times upon ourselves due to the sinful choices we make. By living lives of obedience to Christ we can avoid some of our fearful times. (Exo 20:19-20)
“And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness:… For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.”
Principle #2 – Despite our past failures, by placing the Lord first in our lives (through repentance), we can rest assured the Lord will be with us… He is a great, faithful, forgiving Lord. (Psa 130:4)
“Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you:”
Principle #3 – During fearful times we should be thinking of others and not just ourselves. We should be prayerfully seeking to meet the spiritual and physical needs of those around us. By concentrating on others, the Lord helps take our mind off our fears and trials we are facing. (1 Thess 5:23-25)
“but I will teach you the good and the right way:”
Principle #4 – The fearful times of our life are great opportunites to present the truths of God to others. This can be done through our words as we tell others about Him goodness to us during fearful times. But also, it can be done through our lives as they watch us handle the fearful times with grace and peace. (James 5:10)
“Only fear the LORD”
Principle #5 – During our fearful times, as we concentrate on the Lord’s greatness in authority, power, faithfulness, and wisdom. This develops a reverence or “fear” of Him in our hearts and minds. In His greatness we can find comfort, and assurance, knowing He is in control and accompanying us in our daily walk. (Gen 15:1, Deut 20:3-4, Deut 31:6-8, 1 Chron 28:20, 2 King 6:16-17)
“and serve him in truth with all your heart”
Principle #6 – Fearful times in the life of a Christian should bring us closer to Him. Our service should be greater, our relationship to Him more intimate. This will lead to greater strength and peace during the troublesome times. (Zech 8:13)
“for consider how great things he hath done for you.”
Principle #7 – We are to be remembering His past gracious acts on our behalf, saying as King David did, “David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.”(1Sa 17:37, Isa 43:1, Joel 2:21)
THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION
For the Christian….
In these times of economic and political uncertainty, fear is beginning to enter the lives of even the strongest of Christians. During these fearful times, please remember…
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Php 4:6-7)
(see also Matt 6:25-34)
For those who have never trusted in Christ…
Your main concern should be on your eternal destiny…
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Mat 10:28)
Above all else, please keep in mind, if you are eternally secure in Christ all the events of this world fade in comparison. Just knowing that you are going home to be with the Lord for an eternity, takes the sting out of even the greatest life threatening trials we may face in life….
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Co 15:55-57)
Look to Jesus Christ and turn to Him in faith. He will forgive you of your sins and be with you throughout the trials this world may throw your way….
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isa 55:6-7)
May the Lord bless your study of His Word. Like God’s Word… may your soul’s salvation and your life’s faithfulness be “Settled in Heaven.”

Making It Plain: “Immutability” = without alteration, not capable of change
“Immutable” comes from two Latin words:
1. “im” which means “not”
2. “mutabilis” which means “change”, “variance” or ”
The term “immutable” is used twice in the KJV Bible…
Both occurrences are found in the book of Hebrews and they are translated from the same Greek root word – “ametatithemi” this word is made up of three parts:
1. “a” – not
2. “meta” – around,
3. “tithemi” – to set in place, to establish, to set forth
The idea is this… “immutable” means “to not be moved around”, “to not be transferred”, “to not be re-established”. It is describing an unchanging character, position, mission, and/or activity.
“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the IMMUTABILITY of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath: That by two IMMUTABLE things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, [even] Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. (Hebrews 6:17-20)
Do We Show Our Love For Others?
An hypocrite with [his] mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, [there is] shouting. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. Where no counsel [is], the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is] safety. (Proverbs 11:9-14)

Wisdom’s Great Gain: Love For Our Neighbour: Proverbs 11:9-14
9) An hypocrite with [his] mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
10) When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, [there is] shouting.
11) By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12) He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13) A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
14) Where no counsel [is], the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors [there is] safety.
EXPOSITION:
The this set of proverbs, we find that, when we apply wisdom, we have a great need to love others and sacrifice ourselves for their benefit and our eventual gain.
9) An hypocrite with [his] mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
1. Those who display a lack of wisdom by sinful, insincerely slandering his neighbor can bring him to ruin
2. Those who possess and apply knowledge of God’s Word can deliver just men through their speech.
A. Our love for others is shown by our speech. Does our speech uplift or harm others?
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:” (Ephesians 4:13-15)
10) When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, [there is] shouting.
1. When those who live according to the laws of God are welcomed and encouraged…. Their fellow citizens are happy in the midst of God’s blessings.
2. Once they have receive and appreciate the blessings of God, the citizens shout for joy when those who are rebellious and disobedient to God are removed from their country (realizing more blessing await them). The removal of the wicked involve them being removed from the general population. This can take place by them being driven out from the people, death penalty, imprisonment etc etc.
B. Our love for others is shown by taking a stand against sin and those who abuse others, while upholding and encouraging those who are sacrifice and help to others.
“The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. So that a man shall say, Verily [there is] a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.” (Psalms 58:10-11)
11) By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
1. When God’s people speak well of a city, pray for her, support her Godly laws and goals and work for the cities good, she becomes great and dominate.
2. When those who are wicked speak against the city, opposing her Godly laws, seeking to create unrest and rebellion the city can be overcome, taken, and pillaged.
C. Our love for our fellow citizens should cause us to support the Godly laws of our city and oppose those who would desire to lead the country away from the Scriptural principles and authority God has given to her.
(Note this is one of the great dangers of the “politically correct” movement. They seek uniformity and equality of both the sinful and sinless ignoring the dictates of God’s Word. Instead of desiring a country that punishes the wicked and upholds the righteous… the pc movement says to treat both righteous and wicked equally, by not standing in support of the righteous by rewarding them, and not speaking against the sin of the evildoers and punishing them. This goes directly against the responsibilities God has given to those in authority…
“For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to [execute] wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore [ye] must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. (Romans 13:3-5)
“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.” (James 3:5-9)
12) He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
1. Those who are empty of wisdom will disrespect, abuse and speak evil against those around him.
2. Those who possess understanding will hold his peace and be slow to speak against others realizing the great harm that can be done through false accusations and slanderous speech.
D. Our love for others is shown by always considering how our actions will affect others. Many times, we will be called upon to sacrificially hold back from acting or speaking for others’ benefits.
“And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:” (Luke 18:9)
13) A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
1. Those whose lifestyle is to gossip and talk about others will take the cover off of that which is spoken in confidence.
2. Those who are trustworthy will cover over anything told to them in private.
E. Our love for others is shown by being trustworthy and discreet in all of our relationships.
“Where no wood is, [there] the fire goeth out: so where [there is] no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. [As] coals [are] to burning coals, and wood to fire; so [is] a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer [are] as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” (Proverbs 26:20-22)
14) Where no counsel [is], the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors [there is] safety.
1. Where there is no guidance, those around us will fail, be overcome, and ruined
2. When many advisors are heard and many opinions are considered, the one seeking advice will be delivered and gain victory
F. Our love for others is shown by our willingness to become involved in other’s lives by having concern for others and their wellbeing, giving Godly counsel, and helping them to become successful in their endeavors.
“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” (Proverbs 15:22)
SUMMARY:
In these proverbs we have seen that:
1. those who have been cleansed and justified by God can understand His will and desire to obey Him. They are removed from the condemnation of their sin and the eternal judgment reserved for the guilty.
2. those who are guilty of sin and condemned in God’s sight, have chosen the path of sin upon which they have traveled. They have eternal judgment awaiting them of which there will be no excuse.
The section on the gift of righteousness will continue in the next devotional (vs 7-8).
May we all choose to speak words of wisdom, knowing that they will result in blessings to both the speaker and the hearers.
By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

The End Result Of Wickedness…..
SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 11:7-8
He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)
Wisdom’s Great Gain: The Gift Of Righteousness (Part #2): Proverbs 11:7-8
7) When a wicked man dieth, [his] expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust [men] perisheth.
8) The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
This is part 2 of the section on “Wisdom’s Great Gain: The Gift Of Righteousness” Previously we saw that
1. “righteousness” is the state of being cleansed from sin (disobedience), making a person right (just) in the sight of God.
2. We are clearly told in Scripture that this gift of righteous only comes through the application of God’s Word to our life.
3. those who have been cleansed and justified by God can understand His will and desire to obey Him. They are removed from the condemnation of their sin and the eternal judgment reserved for the guilty.
4. those who are guilty of sin and condemned in God’s sight, have chosen the path of sin upon which they have traveled. They have eternal judgment awaiting them of which there will be no excuse.
The study continues in vs 7-8…
EXPOSITION:
7) When a wicked man dieth, [his] expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust [men] perisheth.
Solomon now begins to describe the end of those who have never received the righteousness of God in Christ:
1. they are described as: “wicked” – guilty and condemned in God’s sight; and “unjust” – false, no lasting value
2. following death, they will have all they longed for totally brought to ruin. The lost has no eternal blessings awaiting him, nor does he have any lasting earthly blessings to take into eternity with him. At his death, he loses everything with no hope of future benefits.
“So [are] the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish: Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust [shall be] a spider’s web.” (Job 8:13-14)
8) The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead
1. the righteous at the end of his life, is removed from any devastation and brought into a blessed eternity
2. the wicked end is that which they deserve, judgment reserved for them based upon their wicked acts.
“The wicked [shall be] a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.” (Proverbs 21:18)

Righteousness: A Standard To Live By and A Confidence Of Eternal Life…
The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in [their own] naughtiness. (Proverbs 11:5-6)

Wisdom’s Great Gain: The Gift Of Righteousness (Part #1): Proverbs 11:5-6
5) The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
6) The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in [their own] naughtiness.
EXPOSITION:
In this section of chapter 11 we find proverbs that speak of another display of wisdom that shows great gain…. righteous living.
For us to come to a sound understanding of these verses, we must come to a basic understanding of the term “righteousness” in these 4 verses. In these verses, the term “righteousness” is used twice and the word “righteous” is used once. All of these terms come from the same root word. This root word carries with it the ideas of “cleansed” or “cleared”, to be “right”, “just”, or “lawful”.
To summarize all of this: “righteousness” is the state of being cleansed from sin (disobedience), making a person right (just) in the sight of God.
Why is this gift of God described as a result of the application of wisdom to our lives? We are clearly told in Scripture that this gift of righteous only comes through the application of God’s Word to our life. It is in His Word we are told of the need to repent and believe the gospel message. It is through these graces of God that righteousness flows.
“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: (Romans 3:20-22)
5) The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
Note several truths we can learn from this proverb…
For the perfect:
1. “the perfect” – Those who without spot in God’s sight are those who have been cleansed of their sin by God. They are considered “perfect” NOT because they do not commit sin, but it is because the sin they have committed has been cleansed by God through the shed blood of Christ.
2. “the righteousness” – It is this cleansing that results in God’s acceptance of him. God has graced him with cleansing. In spite of the sin he committed, and continues to commit, he is now accepted and looked upon as perfect by God.
3. “shall direct his way” – This cleansing by God and His acceptance of the sinner graces the cleansed one with the ability to recognize and live according to the desires of God. It is in this sense that the righteousness of the perfect directs the path of life that he takes. Prior to his cleansing, he did not desire, nor was he able to fulfill the desires of God for his life. It is only after the receipt of righteousness (cleansing and acceptance by God) that he is able to obey Him.
For the wicked:
1. “the wicked” – those who are guilty and condemned in God’s sight.
2. “shall fall” – those who have never received God’s righteousness through Christ’s death shall be overthrown and devastated as they must face the eternal judgment of their sins.
3. “his own wickedness” – the judgment that will fall upon him is based upon his willful disobedience against God. Keep in mind, it is “his own” wickedness. In other words, he is the one that is totally responsible for the judgment he faces because he has chosen to disobey.
“In the way of righteousness [is] life; and [in] the pathway [thereof there is] no death.” (Proverbs 12:28)
“The heathen are sunk down in the pit [that] they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The LORD is known [by] the judgment [which] he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.” (Psalms 9:15-16)
The theme of responsibility for coming judgment is continued in the next proverb…
6) The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in [their own] naughtiness.
1. the cleansing and acceptance by God, shown by those living lives of obedience to Him, will take away any judgment for their sin.
2. those who have crossed over the line of God’s law and seen as guilty in His sight, will be caught “red-handed” in the commission of their perverse, twisted acts of sin. Being caught “red-handed” leaves no excuse for nor doubt of their guilt and deserving of judgment.
“Behold, here I [am]: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received [any] bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.” (1 Samuel 12:3-4)
“His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.” (Psalms 7:16)
May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Is The Lord Delighted In How We Treat Others?
A false balance [is] abomination to the LORD: but a just weight [is] his delight. [When] pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom. The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. Wisdom’s Great Gain: Honesty In Our Dealings With Others: Proverbs 11:1-4
1) A false balance [is] abomination to the LORD: but a just weight [is] his delight.
2) [When] pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom.
3) The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
4) Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
In chapter 11, Solomon shares with us a series of proverbs that reveal 8 practical displays of wisdom that reap great gain for the wise and all who come in contact with them.
EXPOSITION:
In this first section, wisdom results in honest dealings with those around us…
1) A false balance [is] abomination to the LORD: but a just weight [is] his delight.
1. Deceptive, unjust scales are abhorred by the Lord. To manipulate scales for personal gain is not only stealing, but it is stealing under the guise of honesty. It is giving the illusion of fair treatment while, in actuality, taking abusing those who are trusting, defenseless and naïve.
2. Scales that are fair and lawful meet with His approval and causes Him pleasure. Using just weights are dealing with others fairly while rejecting hypocrisy and fraud.
“Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. [But] thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. For all that do such things, [and] all that do unrighteously, [are] an abomination unto the LORD thy God.” (Deuteronomy 25:13-16)
2) [When] pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom.
1. Defrauding the innocent is a display of arrogance, believing that retribution can be escaped. This type of attitude assures that eventual humiliation and justice will take place.
2. Those who are humble, realizing that deception and abuse will be punished, will wisely choose to treat others honestly through the use just weights and measures.
“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified [rather] than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)
3) The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
1. The innocent simplicity of the lawful will lead them to honesty in all their dealings with others.
2. The twisted, complex, viciousness of lawbreakers will turn against, dominate, and impoverish them. All of their attempts to enrich themselves through deceit will result in their eventual ruin.
“[A Psalm] of David. Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; [therefore] I shall not slide.” (Psalms 26:1)
4) Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
1. Wealth which is taken unjustly can bring temporal comfort to the deceiver, but will not be of benefit in the appointed time of repayment at the final judgment throughout eternity.
2. Just as the righteousness of Christ delivers from eternal death, so too, our acts of honesty and justice snatches away the temporal evils that come upon the deceptive.
“Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?” (Ecclesiastes 7:17)
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8)
SUMMARY:
For those who are wise in Christ… Treating others with love, honesty and humility will not only display wisdom to those around us but also reap both temporal and eternal blessings.
By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.
May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

The Speech On Our Lips Reveals The Wisdom In Our Hearts…
The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness. (Proverbs 10:31-32)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 10:31-32
He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)
Wisdom On Display: Wisdom Speaks Spiritually Beneficial Words: Proverbs 10:31-32
31) The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
32) The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness.
EXPOSITION:
31) The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
1. The speech of those that live by God’s law will cast forth wisdom (like a farmer spreads grain in a field).
As they speak to others, in some, it will take root; in others, it will have no lasting results. In either case, the just will receive eternal rewards for the fruit of their faithful labors.
2. One who is deceitful and twisted will have their ability to spread error taken away.
As they continue to speak error, their teachings will be recognized as foolishness and rejected by those who are wise. Also, when they enter eternity, they will be found speechless at the final judgment unable to make any excuse for their actions and unable to propagate their teachings evermore.
“But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.” (Psalms 63:11)
32) The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness.
1. Through the speech of the forgiven ones, the teachings which please God are acknowledged and affirmed.
2. Through the speech of the condemned ones, the truth of God is deceitfully twisted and misused selfishly.
“The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and [that which was] written [was] upright, [even] words of truth.” (Ecclesiastes 12:10)
“A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked [person].” (Psalms 101:4)
SUMMARY:
Some major differences between the speech of the wise and foolishly have been described….
1. The fruit of the speech:
for the wise – eternal spiritual rewards to both the speaker and those who hear his words.
for the foolish – rejection of their teachings by the wise and eternal humiliation and rejection.
2. The content of the speech:
for the wise – teachings that please God and uphold His Word
for the foolish – a proclamation of error, many times by twisting and misusing truth, for selfish motives.
May the Lord give each of us the wisdom to recognize false teachings and grace to reject and stand against it.
As we keep these great blessings in mind, let us all resolve to apply His Word to our lives and display Godly wisdom to all who are around us.
