He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom On Display: Wisdom Speaks Profitable Words: Proverbs 10:18-22

18) He that hideth hatred [with] lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, [is] a fool.
19) In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips [is] wise.
20) The tongue of the just [is as] choice silver: the heart of the wicked [is] little worth.
21) The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
22) The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

EXPOSITION:

Solomon give us the attributes of the speech of fools in comparison to the speech of the wise…

18) He that hideth hatred [with] lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, [is] a fool.
A fool:
1.  covers his animosity towards others with deceitful speech, instead of honesty communicating in order to make peace.
2.  defames through the casting out of words from his mouth.

He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.  [The words] of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war [was] in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet [were] they drawn swords. (Psalms 55:20-21)

Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. (Psalms 101:5)

19) In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips [is] wise.
A fool:
1.  speaks many words without thinking, which leads to harmful, sinful speech, which reveals his foolishness.

A wise man:
1.  hold back his speech, thinking carefully before speaking, which displays his wisdom to all who are listening.

The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.  A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?”   (Ecclesiastes 10:13-14)

20) The tongue of the just [is as] choice silver: the heart of the wicked [is] little worth.
A wise man who has been declared innocent of sin through God’s grace:
1. speaks very valuable and desirable word of wisdom.
A fool whose speech and actions miss the mark God has set:
1. has a set of desires that crave sinfulness and, therefore, is of little value to anyone.

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”   (Matthew 12:34-35)

21) The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
A wise man who is living in right with God:
1. speaks words that will give nourishment and strength to many who listen.

A fool:
1. will be cut off because he is lacking the words of God that would point him to life and joy.

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.”   (Jeremiah 15:16)

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.  As they were increased, so they sinned against me: [therefore] will I change their glory into shame.”   (Hosea 4:6-7)

22) The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
Those who are the recipients of God’s blessings for wise speaking will be spiritually rich and will be joyful throughout their life into eternity.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.(Matthew 6:33-34)

SUMMARY:

May we all choose to speak words of wisdom, knowing that they will result in blessings to both the speaker and the hearers.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Praying now for those words of wisdom others need to hear! Thank you and God bless you!

  4. It seems to me that in recent years we are hearing more and more and more foolish words from more and more people, especially from those in leadership positions, who are then swaying more and more people to speak the same foolish words.

It is past time for all blood-bought, adopted children of the living God to speak – loudly and clearly, but politely and respectfully – His words of wisdom. It is past time for the silent majority to speak up and let our politicians and leaders (in writing) know of our (God’s) thoughts on many matters. And of course, we need to witness, with words of wisdom, to those we encounter in our daily lives.
