SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom On Display: Wisdom Recognizes The End Result Of Our Choices: Proverbs 10:23-25

23) [It is] as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
24) The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
25) As the whirlwind passeth, so [is] the wicked no [more]: but the righteous [is] an everlasting foundation.

EXPOSITION:

This set of proverbs explains that wisdom will show us the likely result of our choices before we make them.

23) [It is] as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
1.  A fool commits acts of planned wrongdoing for his own entertainment and profit
2.  A man who understands the nature and results of his actions possesses wisdom.
Wisdom thinks ahead and acts according to their probable results.  Foolishness acts based upon immediate gratification without consideration of the long term results of their actions.

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.  These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.”   (Jude 1:18-19)

24) The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
1.  Due to his thoughtless actions, a fool will eventually face dreadful harm
2.  Due to the righteous man’s contemplative decision making his long term goals and desires will be met.
The wise man is successful in accomplishing his life goals.  The fool will ultimately fail in his life pursuits.

The wicked man travaileth with pain all [his] days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.  A dreadful sound [is] in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.  He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.”   (Job 15:20-22)

The LORD [is] righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.  The LORD [is] nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.  The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.”   (Psalms 145:17-20)

25) As the whirlwind passeth, so [is] the wicked no [more]: but the righteous [is] an everlasting foundation.

1.  Not only does the fool fail to achieve his goals but, many times, unexpectedly loses everything he has gained.
2.  The righteous, due to his wise decision making, leads a life founded upon service to His Lord that cannot be taken nor undone.

The life of the fool is short lived with no lasting results.  The wise actions of the righteous build a permanent foundation of service to Christ.

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.  For yet a little while, and the wicked [shall] not [be]: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it [shall] not [be].”   (Psalms 37:9-10)

SUMMARY:

Through wisdom’s perception, we can obtain our life’s goals and build a lasting testimony of service for the Lord Jesus Christ.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

I’m thinking about Proverbs 10:25 in light of the news in Boston. While we often see quickness different than the LORD, nevertheless in God’s timing He will bring the wicked to judgment

I really appreciate learning all the good that wisdom does! God bless you and thank you, Pastor Rob!

  4. More of God’s teaching “buts” showing the results of either/or.
We have no excuse if we fail to follow wisdom’s way – but we praise God for His continued work in us, leading us and enabling us to follow Him.
