SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom On Display: Wisdom Speaks Spiritually Beneficial Words: Proverbs 10:31-32

31) The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
32) The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness.

EXPOSITION:

31) The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

1.  The speech of those that live by God’s law will cast forth wisdom (like a farmer spreads grain in a field).
As they speak to others, in some, it will take root; in others, it will have no lasting results.  In either case, the just will receive eternal rewards for the fruit of their faithful labors.

2.  One who is deceitful and twisted will have their ability to spread error taken away.
As they continue to speak error, their teachings will be recognized as foolishness and rejected by those who are wise.  Also, when they enter eternity, they will be found speechless at the final judgment unable to make any excuse for their actions and unable to propagate their teachings evermore.

But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.”   (Psalms 63:11)

32) The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness.

1.  Through the speech of the forgiven ones, the teachings which please God are acknowledged and affirmed.
2.  Through the speech of the condemned ones, the truth of God is deceitfully twisted and misused selfishly.

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and [that which was] written [was] upright, [even] words of truth.”  (Ecclesiastes 12:10)

A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked [person].”   (Psalms 101:4)

SUMMARY:

Some major differences between the speech of the wise and foolishly have been described….

1.  The fruit of the speech:
for the wise – eternal spiritual rewards to both the speaker and those who hear his words.
for the foolish – rejection of their teachings by the wise and eternal humiliation and rejection.

2. The content of the speech:
for the wise – teachings that please God and uphold His Word
for the foolish – a proclamation of error, many times by twisting and misusing truth, for selfish motives.

May the Lord give each of us the wisdom to recognize false teachings and grace to reject and stand against it.

As we keep these great blessings in mind, let us all resolve to apply His Word to our lives and display Godly wisdom to all who are around us. May we all choose to speak words of wisdom, knowing that they will result in blessings to both the speaker and the hearers.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

This is a much needed devotional for me. Been thinking about my speech a lot as a pastor, hoping I speak to give grace and not exasperate.

  6. Encouragement and challenge! Thanks.
There is no comparison, is there? – and no doubt about what we should desire. May we always seek and enjoy the blessings of His wisdom and discard and destroy the foolish.
