There Is Security and Comfort In Truthfulness…

SIH HALTAL ICONA righteous [man] hateth lying: but a wicked [man] is loathsome, and cometh to shame.  Righteousness keepeth [him that is] upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.  (Proverbs 13:5-6)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 13:5-6

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wise Attitudes: Truthfulness: Proverbs 13:5-6

5) A righteous [man] hateth lying: but a wicked [man] is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
6) Righteousness keepeth [him that is] upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

EXPOSITION:

5) A righteous [man] hateth lying: but a wicked [man] is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
1.  A lawful upright man calls lying his enemy, because he understands the results of deceit on his life and service to Christ.

I hate and abhor lying: [but] thy law do I love.”   (Psalms 119:163)

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”  (Ephesians 4:25)
2.  A sinful man is offensive and repugnant to those around him and possess an end of public humiliation.

Truth telling enhances the righteous man’s testimony for Christ and gains respect from others.  The lies of a wicked man result in public shame and a harmed testimony when the deceit comes to light.

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.”   (Daniel 12:2)

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:7-8)

6) Righteousness keepeth [him that is] upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
1.  Choosing obedience to Christ (truth telling) will being protection and blessings to those who are innocent as they live life on earth.

O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.  Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.”   (Psalms 25:20-21)

A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.  [He that] backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.  In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. [He that] sweareth to [his own] hurt, and changeth not.  [He that] putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these [things] shall never be moved.”   (Psalms 15:1-5)

2.  Choosing disobedience to Christ (a deceitful life) will overtake those who fail to please Him.

The choice we have before us is to live lives of truthfulness or deceit.  The blessings are many to those who choose truthfulness and is a mark of those eternally secure in Christ.  The results of living a life of deceit is heinous and will display to all the deceitful is headed for eternal ruin.

Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.  Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow [him].  I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, [and] the right of the poor.  Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.”   (Psalms 140:10-13)

SUMMARY:

The type of lifestyle that we live, honesty or deceit, is a very important issue that cannot be overemphasized.  An honest lifestyle is a strong indicator of a close relationship with the Lord and evidence of the possession of eternal security in Him…. What does our lifestyle tell us about our spiritual relationship with Him?

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.  Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;  And have put on the new [man], which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”   (Colossians 3:8-10)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

We Will Reap What Our Words Sow….

SIH HALTAL ICON2) A man shall eat good by the fruit of [his] mouth: but the soul of the transgressors [shall eat] violence.
3) He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
 4) The soul of the sluggard desireth, and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. (Proverbs 13:2-4)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 13:2-4

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wise Attitudes: Guarding Our Speech: Proverbs 13:2-4

2) A man shall eat good by the fruit of [his] mouth: but the soul of the transgressors [shall eat] violence.
3) He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
4) The soul of the sluggard desireth, and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

EXPOSITION:

2) A man shall eat good by the fruit of [his] mouth: but the soul of the transgressors [shall eat] violence.
1.  When a man speaks helpful words of wisdom to others, he will benefit by being appreciated and blessed by those he has helped
2.  Those whose speech is sinful (demeaning, injuring and taking advantage of others) will have returned upon him opposition, harm and retribution by the Lord and those he has hurt.

We can only expect to reap what we sow…. this principle certainly applies to the words of our mouth as well as our actions and lifestyles.  There is a direct connection between how we speak to others and how they will treat us in return.  The quality of our life on earth can be greatly influenced by the words that proceed out of our mouths.

Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.”   (Psalms 141:3)

The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, [and] the tongue that speaketh proud things:  Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips [are] our own: who [is] lord over us?”  (Psalms 12:3-4)

3) He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
1.  The treatment of those around us is an indicator of our spiritual condition before God. Those who recognize and appreciate the eternal life they have been given, also recognize of the need to control their speech and use it to help others and honor God .  They do this out of love for God and those around them.
Remember, the basic principle that a proof of our love for the Lord is keeping His commands (John 14:21).  What are the two greatest commands?  To love God supremely and others as ourselves. (Matt 22:37-40)  By using our speech correctly we can fulfill both of these commands and display our love for Him.

2.  Those who speak rashly with no consideration of the Lord’s desires, nor the feelings and needs of others, is indicative of the lost who are awaiting future, eternal destruction.

Our speech, as an indicator of our spiritual condition, reflects on the possession or lack of eternal life awaiting them.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”   (Matthew 12:37)

4) The soul of the sluggard desireth, and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
Based on the above principles….
1.  Those who are lazy in the guarding of their speech will end up with no physical, spiritual, nor eternal prosperity.
2.  Those who are determined and eager to wisely guard their speech will end up flourishing in all areas of our lives.

Do we desire the blessings of God and the favor of others?  Let’s use our speech wisely for the good of God, others and ourselves.

But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.  For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.  And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:  That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”   (Hebrews 6:9-12)

SUMMARY:

Our speech can lead to blessings, a wonderful testimony and the pleasure of God when used properly.  For those whose lifestyle is characterized by misusing their speech we find only sadness, heartache, and judgment awaiting them.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

A Look At The Amazing Human Conscience In The New Testament

SIH HALTAL ICONAnd king Herod heard [of him]; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.  Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.  But when Herod heard [thereof], he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.  (Mark 6:14-16)

The Human Conscience Series: NT Descriptions Of Our Conscience’s Workings

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth:

but the righteous are bold as a lion.

(Prov 28:1)

There are many aspects to the working of the human conscience that is within us.  One of the ways to come to an understanding of the functions of the conscience is by looking at descriptions of the conscience’s effects in the lives of Biblical characters.

Our study for today will be very similar to our previous study.  For today, instead of looking at Old Testament verses, we will be looking at New Testament verses that describe the conscience’s effects on individuals.  Please note, as in our prior study, although the word “conscience” is not used, the work of the conscience is clearly seen in each of these Scriptures.

THE SCRIPTURES:

Matthew 27:3-5 (KJV)
3) Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4) Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What [is that] to us? see thou [to that].
5) And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

Mark 6:14-16 (KJV)
14) And king Herod heard [of him]; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
15) Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
16) But when Herod heard [thereof], he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

1 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)
4) For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

1 John 3:19-21 (KJV)
19) And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20) For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21) Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.

THE STUDY:

The work of the conscience described in the NT Scriptures…
1.  Matthew 27:3-5 – …Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, departed, and went and hanged himself.
The phrase “when he saw he was condemned” is translated from a Greek phrase with a common meang of “when he perceived that judgment was awaiting him”…..

This shows us that the conscience reveals guilt and impending judgment.

2.  Mark 6:14-16 – … But when Herod heard [thereof], he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
This is very similar to Proverbs 28:1 – “The wicked flee when no man pursueth”…

In both of these texts, we can see a result of the conscience at work is paranoia on behalf of the one being convicted of wrongdoing.

3.  1 Corinthians 4:4 … For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
“I know nothing by myself” is another way of saying “There is no perception within myself”.   Paul was telling us that his conscience was not convicting him of unfaithfulness in the ministry.  However, because it can malfunction, his greatest concern was if he was looked upon as faithful by Christ.

Although the conscience can be a great asset in discerning our condition before the Lord, it can malfunction and its testimony can lead us astray.

4.  1 John 3:19-21 …And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.  Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.

The phrases “assure our hearts”, “heart condemn us”, and “heart condemn us not” are all describing the work of the conscience within us.  “To assure” describes actions that cause the conscience to testify of innocence and purity; “to condemn us” describes the conscience testifying of guilt and coming judgment; while “condemn us not” is when the conscience is silent on an issue, resulting in presumed innocence.

The conscience not only testifies of guilt, but also testifies of innocence, or at times can imply innocence through silence.

THE SUMMARY:

This completes our study of the various texts in the Bible that describe the workings of the conscience without containing the word “conscience” .  In these two sections we have learned the following about the workings of “the conscience that lies with us”

The conscience:

1. Gen 20:5,6  – pushes us towards perfection in choices and deeds.
2.  1Sam 24:5, 10   – works with our desire to please God, warning us of our failures.
3.  1 Sam 25:31 – helps us to avoid ruin to our goals and desires.
4.  Job 27:6 – produces feelings of shame when we rebel against the Lord’s will.
5. Psa 16:7 – gives us continuing instructions and corrections to regulate our choices/actions
6.  Eccl 10:20 –teaches us through feelings of confidence, shame, or uncertainty
7.  Gen 3:8 –  reveals when we have sinned, communion is broken, and repentance is needed
8. Gen 42:21 – shows us when we sin against others and the results of those sins in our lives.
9. Prov 28:1 – causes unfounded anxiety/fear for the guilty while supplying confidence/boldness to the righteous.
10. Matthew 27:3-5 – reveals guilt and impending judgment.
11. Mark 6:14-16 – causes paranoia on behalf of the one being convicted of wrongdoing.
12. 1 Corinthians 4:4 – can be a great asset, or it can malfunction and lead us astray.
13.  1 John 3:19-21 – testifies of guilt, also of innocence, or can imply innocence by silence

We have looked at both the Old Testament and New Testament texts that clearly describe the work of the conscience without using the word “conscience” in the texts.  The remaining sections of our study will center on the texts that contain the word “conscience”.

May the Lord bless us as we seek His truth.

SIH HALTAL ICONA Place that has to be Believed to be Seen…

What Is This Place?

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.” (Heb 11:13-14)

Making It Plain: “Sanctify” = To Be Set Apart

SIH TOTT ICON“Sanctify” comes from Latin word:  “sanctus” which means “to make holy, to make separate”

The term “sanctify” is used many times in the KJV Bible…
1.  Old Testament word:  “qadash” means “to make clean, holy, to hallow, to separate”
2. New Testament word: “hagiazo” means to dedicate, purify, consecrate

The idea is this… “sanctify” means to separate for the use of God.  It speaks of separation from sin to God, to purify from sin, to dedicate to God’s use.

Here are a few samples of Biblical usage….

This term is used to describe an attribute of the Christ, Who is totally separated from sin to be perfectly used by the Father:

Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
(John 10:36)

This term also speaks of an attribute that is given to saints through the work of Christ on the cross:

And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, [yea], and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:  That no flesh should glory in his presence.  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:  That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.  (1 Corinthians 1:28-31)

It also describes an ongoing process of spiritual growth, separation from sin and greater service for Him:

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.  As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.  And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.  (John 17:17-19)

How Can We Be Wise Sons and Daughters Of Our Heavenly Father?

SIH HALTAL ICONBy Reading His Word!….

A wise son [heareth] his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 13:1

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wise Attitudes: Desire For Godly Instruction: Proverbs 13:1

1) A wise son [heareth] his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

EXPOSITION:

1) A wise son [heareth] his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

1. A son who applies his Heavenly Father’s Word to his life, realizes the importance of the counsel of those with greater experience.  He takes seriously the words of those who are led of God and motivated by a heart of love and desire to help him along life’s way.  He will willingly listen, consider and apply the advice that he has been given.

The “instruction” that the Lord gives to us can come in four general types of forms and is given to us with the intent of living a wise lifestyle of obedience to Him.  The four forms of instruction are:
a. “doctrine” – this is sharing with us the truths of His Word presented to us for INTELLECTUAL GAIN.
b. “reproof” – this is sharing with us WARNINGS CONCERNING OUR SIN and it’s results.
c. “correction” – this is sharing with us the path that should be taken to REMEDY FOR SIN in our lives
d. “instruction in righteousness” – this is sharing with us the truths of His Word with the intent of PRACTICAL APPLICATION to our lives….

All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”   (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

2.  A person who mocks at the counsel of the wise does not consider their message of correction.  In doing so, he stubbornly persists in his sinful lifestyle.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of those who are wise is their willingness to accept Godly correction for their lives.  After all, by listening to His divine correction we have nothing to lose and everything to gain…

I know, O LORD, that thy judgments [are] right, and [that] thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.”   (Psalms 119:75)

Behold, happy [is] the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:  For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.”   (Job 5:17-18)

I know, O LORD, that thy judgments [are] right, and [that] thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.  Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.  Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law [is] my delight.”   (Psalms 119:75-77)

Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.  And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  For they verily for a few days chastened [us] after their own pleasure; but he for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of his holiness.”   (Hebrews 12:4-10)

SUMMARY:

Attitudes that flow from a wise lifestyle includes a desire to receive the Lord’s corrective instruction.   He sends us this instruction from a variety of sources, including those who are motivated by a heart of love and a desire to help us become better servants for Him.   May we all be open to the Lord’s workings in our life as He works to help us to grows in grace and become closer to Him.   May we not quickly reject the counsel of others because, it can be the Lord speaking to us through the use of one of His children.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 12:28

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Opposing Counterparts: Death: Proverbs 12:28

28) In the way of righteousness [is] life; and [in] the pathway [thereof there is] no death.

EXPOSITION:

28) In the way of righteousness [is] life; and [in] the pathway [thereof there is] no death.
1.  The path of pleasing God with our lives will lead us to life in Him.  Although we may be suffer on this earth and perhaps ever die for our stand for Christ, we will be blessed on a daily basis and have satisfaction and peace knowing that we have pleased Him and await His coming.

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.  [It is of] the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.  [They are] new every morning: great [is] thy faithfulness.  The LORD [is] my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.  The LORD [is] good unto them that wait for him, to the soul [that] seeketh him.  [It is] good that [a man] should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”   (Lamentations 3:21-26)

2.  This same path that leads to a spiritually profitable life will lead us to an eternity in the presence of our Lord.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,  Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.  These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”   (Titus 2:11-15)

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”   (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.  Let your speech [be] alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”   (Colossians 4:5-6)

This type of wise existence Solomon has been comparing with the life of a fool.  It is the foolish lifestyle which only leads to a wasted physical life on earth and eternal existence of separation from the presence of God in the Lake of Fire.  It is in this Lake of Fire that the foolish one will face the deserved, just punishment for their rebellion against God and rejection of the truth that has been revealed to him through nature, his conscience and the Word of God.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.  Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is].”   (Ephesians 5:15-17)

When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:   And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth [his] sheep from the goats:  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed [thee]? or thirsty, and gave [thee] drink?  When saw we thee a stranger, and took [thee] in? or naked, and clothed [thee]?  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me.  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:  I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of the least of these, ye did [it] not to me.  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”   (Matthew 25:31-46)

SUMMARY:

Our summary for this devotion can be summarized in one text…

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, [that] I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”   (Deuteronomy 30:19)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 12:24-27

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Opposing Counterparts: Lazyness: Proverbs 12:24-27

 24) The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
25) Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
26) The righteous [is] more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
27) The slothful [man] roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man [is] precious.

This set of proverbs now reminds us that laziness is a characteristic of a foolish lifestyle….

EXPOSITION:

24) The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
1.  The wise man who is determined, eager and well prepared to fulfill the task at hand will be exalted and looked upon as faithful and trustworthy.
2.  For those that are unprepared and lazy leading to failure in the completion of his task, will be demoted and placed upon the rule of another.

And the man Jeroboam [was] a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.”   (1 Kings 11:28)

His lord answered and said unto him, [Thou] wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:  Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and [then] at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.  Take therefore the talent from him, and give [it] unto him which hath ten talents.”   (Matthew 25:26-28)

25) Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
1.  Dread and lack of desire hinders a man weighing him down and making his task much more difficult.
2.  Those who are can find encouragement to do a task at hand will find joy and contentment in fulfilling his duty

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.”   (Psalms 38:6)

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to [him that is] weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”   (Isaiah 50:4)

26) The righteous [is] more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
1.  Those who are diligent, following the principles of the Lord with his life, will be placed ahead of others, guiding and leading them through example and speech.
2.  The path of those who break God’s laws and are facing condemnation are strong enticements to laxness and irresponsibility

[But] to the saints that [are] in the earth, and [to] the excellent, in whom [is] all my delight.”   (Psalms 16:3)

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.”   (James 1:13-14)

27) The slothful [man] roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man [is] precious.
1.  Those who are irresponsible will be wasteful by not cooking that which he has labored to obtain.
2.  Those who are responsible will use that which he expends labor to gain.

A little that a righteous man hath [is] better than the riches of many wicked. (Psalms 37:16)

SUMMARY:

Does our life display foolishness by exhibiting a lazy, irresponsible attitude?  Or, do we lead the way for others by being prepared and determined to accomplish our calling of the Lord.  May we all be aware of the example we are setting and be prepared to accept each responsibility that the Lord may send our way.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

We Must Use Wisdom BEFORE We Use Our Tongue!

SIH HALTAL ICON“There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.  Lying lips [are] abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly [are] his delight.  A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.” (Proverbs 12:21-23)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 12:21-23

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Opposing Counterparts: Harmful Speech (Part 2): Proverbs 12:21-23

21) There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
22) Lying lips [are] abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly [are] his delight.
23) A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

In this section of our study, we are presented with the second part of Solomon’s teachings on harmful speech which is the counterpart to a lifestyle that uses uplifting, truthful, wise speech to help others and glorify the Lord ….

EXPOSITION:

If you remember in our last study, Solomon began a section of teaching on harmful speech.  In the previous study we saw that:
1.  Those who consistently bear an untrue testimony for personal gain displays himself as being guilty of fraud and treachery – vs 17
2.  There exists those who are fools whose words will cut and devour like a sword – vs 18
3.  The words of a deceitful tongue will only last a short period and then, once proven false will become useless.  So, too, the speaker of lies will not be trusted by others but will be ignored due to the unreliable nature of their speech. – vs 19
4.  The root cause of deceptive speech is a deceptive heart.  It is due to a set of desires that long to take advantage of others that evil plots are borne.  Lying speech is many times an integral part of these evil, fraudulent plans of the wicked. – vs 20

He now continues the study in verse 21….

21) There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
1.  Those who have become new creatures in Christ, and whose speech is now conformed to the desires of God, can be assured of lasting security and peace with God and others around them. They can know that the Lord will bless them with temporal blessings on earth, as well as blessings throughout eternity, because they have chosen a lifestyle of wisdom and obedience to the Lord.
2.  In contrast, because the speech of fools brings harm to others (vs 17-20), many times, those who are harmed attempt to retaliate in like kind.  This fills the fools life with trials and heartaches.  Even more importantly, fools cannot expect the temporal blessings of the Lord due to their rebellious and sinful speech.  But of utmost importance, they will face eternal judgment at the hands of Almighty God as they enter into eternity.

Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;  Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;  And ye are Christ’s; and Christ [is] God’s.”   (1 Corinthians 3:21-23)

Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing [shall be] on thy glory.”   (Habakkuk 2:16)

22) Lying lips [are] abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly [are] his delight.
1. Fraudulent, deceitful speech is disgusting and abhorrent to the Lord.
2. Those who speak sincere, transparent, honest words find acceptance, favor and pleasure in God’s sight.

Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life:”   (Ezekiel 13:22)

But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD.”   (Jeremiah 9:24)

23) A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
1.  A man who applies the Word to his life will limit his speech to that which is beneficial to man and pleasing to the Lord.  His vain, sinful, and idle thoughts he will choose not to reveal because he realizes they will only harm others while disobeying the Lord.
At times, he will even choose to withhold his knowledge of the Word of God, realizing the hearer’s heart has not been prepared to receive it.
2.  A man who is a fool, will desires to say everything that is on his mind, regardless of the end result of his speech.  He will display an attitude of selfishness, putting his fleshly desire to “speak his mind” over the desires of God and the needs of those around him.

Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.  Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”    (Psalms 34:13-14)

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion [is] vain.”   (James 1:26)

SUMMARY:

In all of the above examples we find one general basic principle… a wise man learns to control his speech based upon his determination of the following:
1.  What will be the future results of my speech? – vs 21
2.  Is my speech truthful ? – vs 22
3.  Will my speech meet the needs of others?  Will my speech please the Lord? – vs 23

Our speech will reflect the genuine concerns of our heart.  Our speech will reflect our true priorities of life.

What does our speech teach us about ourselves?

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Our Speech Reveals What Is In Our Heart…

SIH HALTAL ICON

[He that] speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health.  The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue [is] but for a moment.  Deceit [is] in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace [is] joy.  (Proverbs 12:17-20)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 12:17-20

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Wisdom’s Opposing Counterparts: Harmful Speech (Part 1): Proverbs 12:17-20

17) [He that] speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.
18) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health.
19) The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue [is] but for a moment.
20) Deceit [is] in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace [is] joy.

In this section of our study, we are presented with harmful speech which is the counterpart to a lifestyle that uses uplifting, truthful, wise speech to help others and glorify the Lord ….

EXPOSITION:

17) [He that] speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.
1.  The wise display honest and sincere speech which presents their lifestyle as being one of submission to the Lord and alignment with His laws.
2.  Those who consistently bear an untrue testimony for personal gain displays himself as being guilty of fraud and treachery

A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful [witness] speaketh lies.”   (Proverbs 14:25)

18) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health.
1.  There exists those whose words will cut and devour like a sword
2.  There are also those whose speech brings strength and healing to those who are frail and sick.

Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.  Thou lovest evil more than good; [and] lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.”   (Psalms 52:2-3)

19) The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue [is] but for a moment.
1.  When honest, sincere truth (especially the truth of the Word), because it is truthful, will have a sure foundation so that it will not be defeated nor proven false.  Also, the one speaking will be respected and trusted due to the reliability of his words.
2.  The words of a deceitful tongue will only last a short period and then, once proven false will become useless.  So, too, the speaker of lies will not be trusted by others but will be ignored due to the unreliable nature of their speech.

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”   (Matthew 24:35)

That the triumphing of the wicked [is] short, and the joy of the hypocrite [but] for a moment?  Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;   [Yet] he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where [is] he?”   (Job 20:5-7)

20) Deceit [is] in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace [is] joy.
1.   The root cause of deceptive speech is a deceptive heart.  It is due to a set of desires that long to take advantage of others that evil plots are borne.  Lying speech is many times an integral part of these evil, fraudulent plans of the wicked.
2.  For those who bring peace and harmony to their hearers by sharing spiritually uplifting and beneficial counsel will possess great joy.  This joy will come knowing that they are faithfully serving the Lord by helping others through their words.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;  When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for [there are] seven abominations in his heart.   [Whose] hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the [whole] congregation.”   (Proverbs 26:24-26)

Finally, [be ye] all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, [be] pitiful, [be] courteous:  Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.  For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:  Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.  For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord [is] against them that do evil.  And who [is] he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?”   (1 Peter 3:8-13)

SUMMARY:

Our speech is a wonderful indicator of the spiritual condition of our heart.  Do we love the Lord and desire to obey Him?  If so our speech will be uplifting, sharing the Word of the Lord, seeking to meet the needs of others.  This is a direct result of seeking to love the Lord with all our hearts and others as if they were ourselves.

Do we live our lives selfishly?  If this is the case our speech will be spoken to mislead and take advantage of others.  It will be spoken from a heart that only cares about how our speech will affect ourselves with little or no concern for its affects on others.

What does our speech teach us about ourselves?

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

The Human Conscience Series: OT Descriptions Of Our Conscience’s Workings

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

(Prov 28:1)

There are many aspects to the working of the human conscience that is within us.  One of the ways to come to an understanding of the functions of the conscience is by looking at descriptions of the conscience’s effects in the lives of Biblical characters.

In our study for today, we will be looking at many pictures of the conscience working in the lives of Old Testament characters.

THE SCRIPTURES:

Gen 3:8 (KJV)  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Gen 20:5-6 (KJV)  Said he not unto me, She [is] my sister? and she, even she herself said, He [is] my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.  And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

Gen 42:21 (KJV)   And they said one to another, We [are] verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

1Sam 24:5 & 10 (KJV)  And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt…. Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and [some] bade [me] kill thee: but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he [is] the LORD’S anointed.

1Sam 25:31 (KJV)  That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

Job 27:6 (KJV)  My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live.

Ps 16:7 (KJV)  I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

Prov 28:1 (KJV)  The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Eccl 10:20 (KJV)  Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

THE STUDY:

The conscience described in the OT Scriptures…

1. Gen 20:5,6  –  she herself said, He [is] my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

The Hebrew phrase “integrity of my heart” carries with it the idea of “completeness or perfectness of will and desires”….

This shows us that the conscience pushes us towards perfection in choices and deeds.

2.  1Sam 24:5, 10   – “And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him,…, And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people.

The phrase “heart smote him” comes from the Hebrew meaning “to strike upon the desires, will and goals”…

By this phrase we learn that when we sin our conscience strikes in harmony with our desire to please God, warning us of our failures.

3.  1 Sam 25:31 – That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart…”

Here, the phrase “offense of heart” is a translation of a Hebrew phrase that means “to cause to fall, or to bring to ruin, our desires, will and goals”…

Here we learn that our properly working conscience helps us to avoid ruin to our goals and desires.

4.  Job 27:6 – “…my heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live.

The phrase “my heart shall not reproach me” comes from the Hebrew translated “my inner being will be bring shame upon me”…

From this phrase, we can learn that a properly functioning conscience will produce feelings of shame and embarrassment when we rebel against the Lord’s will.

5. Psa 16:7 –I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

Here, the phrase “my reigns instruct me” can be translated “my inner being teaches, chastens and corrects me.”…

Here we are told that our conscience gives us continuing instructions and corrections based upon the counsel of the Lord to regulate our choices and actions.

6.  Eccl 10:20 – Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

The Hebrew phrase translated “in thy thought” carries with it the idea of “to receive with your senses”….

In other words, it is revealing that the conscience’s teachings can be “sensed” through our feelings of confidence, shame, or being troubled and unsure.

The conscience at work in the OT Scriptures:

1.  Gen 3:8 – “And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

It was due to their conscience that Adam and Eve hid from the Lord after eating the forbidden fruit.  Our conscience helps us to understand when we have sinned against God, our communion with Him is broken and our need of repentance.

2. Gen 42:21 – “And they said one to another, We [are] verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

It was their conscience that caused the brothers of Joseph to feel guilt concerning the mistreatment of Joseph when they had placed him in the pit and sold him to the Egyptians (Gen 37:1-36).

Our conscience shows us when we sin against others and the results of those sins in our lives.

3. Prov 28:1 – “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

It is a wicked man’s conscience that causes him to feel threatened and mistakenly expect harm to fall upon him.  While the conscience gives the righteous assurance and peace knowing his heart is right with God and the Lord is with him every step of the way.

The human conscience works on the mind of the guilty causing unfounded anxiety and fear while supplying the righteous confidence and boldness in the face of danger.

THE SUMMARY:

We have looked at the Old Testament descriptions of the workings of the human conscience.  We have seen that the conscience was clearly at work in the lives of both the wicked and the righteous of the Old Testament.  The workings of the conscience is varied and numerous but, when working properly leads us to the things of God and to put down the acts of rebellion that we commit.

In the next section of our study, we will be looking at the New Testament descriptions for the working s of the human conscience that is within us all.

May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.
