When God’s People Live Godly Lives…. They Are Blessed!

SIH HALTAL ICONHear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.  [There are] many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 19:20-23

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

God’s Word Affects: Our Relationship With The Lord: Proverbs 19:20-23

20) Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
21) [There are] many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
22) The desire of a man [is] his kindness: and a poor man [is] better than a liar.
23) The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and [he that hath it] shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

EXPOSITION:

Solomon describes four key areas of life that will enhance or degrade our relationship with the Lord….

20) Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Area number 1 – Our receipt of God’s Word.  We are to receive and retain the Word of God in two different ways…
1.  We are to hear and seriously, prayerfully, consider the advice that God gives to us.  When we take His counsel seriously, we will always follow it.  When we do not follow the counsel that we have heard, it is because we are taking His warnings and commands far too lightly
2.  We are to choose, and then take hold of, the warnings and corrections that He gives.
3.  When we do both of these, we will find ourselves gaining wisdom that will be profitable to us as we continue to age physically and mature spiritually, in our service to Him.

The Word of God, when received and taken seriously, will be beneficial to us throughout our lifetimes.  It will bring us to spiritual maturity and success in achieving His goals for our lives.

Mark the perfect [man], and behold the upright: for the end of [that] man [is] peace.”   (Psalms 37:37)

 21) [There are] many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Area number 2 – Our plans for the future
1.  God’s people, because they still have a sin nature within them, possess many opposing goals and plans for their lives.  Some of these goals are in alignment with the will of God, others are in opposition to it.  For the lost, due to their dominating sin nature hold to, only, a variety of desires that oppose the Lord’s revealed will.
2.  The only goals that will come to fruition, in both the lives of lost and saved, are those goals that are a part of God’s sovereign plan for mankind.   As Sovereign Lord over all, He is the One who ultimately controls all.

By recognizing His Lordship over all, and trusting Him with our future successes in service to Him, we will find ourselves making plans that are in alignment with His will for our lives.

“The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”   (Psalms 33:10-11)

22) The desire of a man [is] his kindness: and a poor man [is] better than a liar.
Area number 3 – The desires of our heart
1.  Our desires should center upon wanting to honor and glorify God through a testimony of love and mercy.  When those around us see our kind lifestyle, they are seeing the person of the Lord through our testimonies.
2.  Although a poor man is looked down upon by others, they can still successfully reveal Christ to others out of a testimony of kindness.  They show that they are rich in the spiritual things of God, while lacking the physical things of this world.

But, when men are looked down upon by others due to a testimony of deceitfulness and selfishness, they cannot successfully testify of Christ to others.  They prove to all that they are spiritually destitute and their lifestyle is of no lasting value to anyone.

For if there be first a willing mind, [it is] accepted according to that a man hath, [and] not according to that he hath not.”   (2 Corinthians 8:12)

23) The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and [he that hath it] shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Area number 4 – Our respect for Him
1.  When we hold the highest possible respect for the person of the Lord, and fear His chastening hand, it will lead us to willful submission to His will for our lives.  This, in turn, results in repentance and a saving faith in Him (spiritual life) as well as a blessed successful life of service for Him.
2.  As we see ourselves being used of Him and accomplishing much for His glory, it will bring to our heart a knowledge of His gracious hand of spiritual accomplishment in our lives.
3.  The man who properly fears the Lord and is faithful to Him will be blessed and protected by the Lord.  He can rest assured that the only events that touch his life are those that are for his ultimate benefit and for the glory of His Lord.

And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve [me] unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.”   (2 Timothy 4:18)

SUMMARY:

The four basic principles that will greatly enrich our walk with Christ:
Principle #1 – The Word of God, when received and taken seriously, will be beneficial to us throughout our lifetimes.
Principle #2 – By recognizing His Lordship over all, and trusting Him with our future successful service for Him, we will find ourselves making plans that are in alignment with His will for our lives.
Principle #3 – When men are looked down upon by others, due to a testimony of deceitfulness and selfishness, they cannot successfully testify of Christ to others.
Principle #4 – The man who properly fears the Lord and is faithful to Him will be blessed and protected by the Lord.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Are We Giving Of Ourselves For The Lord, The Poor, and Our Children?

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 19:16-19

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

God’s Word Affects: Our Relationships With Others (4): Proverbs 19:16-19

16) He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; [but] he that despiseth his ways shall die.
17) He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
18) Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
19) A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver [him], yet thou must do it again.

We now continue Solomon’s teachings on the many principles from God’s Word we can use, in the forming and developing solid relationships with others…

EXPOSITION:

16) He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; [but] he that despiseth his ways shall die.
Here, we see a basic principle in developing good relations with those who possess authority over us….
1.  A person that attends to the commandments given to them by those in authority, are only helping themselves to avoid the wrath of the command giver.
2.   A person that systematically rejects the commands of higher authorities places themselves in a dangerous position of opposition to those in power (whether it be God or man).  In many cases, continual rebellion will result in physical or spiritual death.

This is a very important principle that should not be overlooked.  We are to always keep the command of God (the One who holds ultimate authority over us).  This enables the Christian to avoid the chastening hand of God.

However our, responsibility does not stop here.  We are to also obey the commands of men as long as, in doing so, we are not breaking the commands of God. By obeying those in authority, we are escaping their hand of punishment and cultivating a successful atmosphere for all of our pursuits.

But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.”   (Jeremiah 7:23)

17) He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
Here, we find two motivating forces behind our giving to the needy…
1.  Those who look upon those in need, willing to give of ourselves to meet that need, are actually giving for the Lord.
2.  When we give to meet the needs of the poor, will be blessed of God in repayment for our actions.

Remember, the “poor” can include those who have physical, emotional, or spiritual needs.  While “giving” to meet their need can involve giving time, labor or finances.

Knowing this, let’s always strive to help the needy that are brought in our lives by the Lord.  It is a wonderful opportunity to serve the Lord and receive His more valuable blessings in return.

But this [I say], He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.  And God [is] able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all [things], may abound to every good work:”   (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

18) Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
1.  The parent is to properly discipline the child while there is still hope of their reformation. While the child is young, they possess a more teachable nature and, therefore, more apt to learn from the discipline.
2.  Although the child will cry as if he is dying (“crying” is derived from a Hebrew word meaning “death”) the discipline is still to be performed.  Although it is painful, at the time, the discipline will be of far greater benefit for the child, and parent, in the future.

“Chastening “ comes from an interesting Hebrew word. This word possesses three different ideas to it… “to instruct”,” to correct”,  and “to punish”

When the child commits a wrongdoing, the parent’s responsibility is three-fold.  They are to:
1. “instruct” the child…. Teaching them the sinfulness of the action and explaining why the action is sinful.
2. “correct” the child… Teach them how to avoid the temptation to commit this sin in the future and what action should be performed to replace the sinful acts and make amends.
3.  If the child refuses to accept this instruction and correction, shown by continuing in their sinful action, the issue becomes an issue of willful disobedience.  It is at this point that “discipline” should be used to bring the child to submission to your instructions and corrections.

Discipline should ALWAYS BE RESERVED for those in rebellion to the instruction and correction of a higher authority. It is to be performed to bring willful disobedience into submission.  It is NEVER to be used before the proper instruction, correction, and opportunity to submit is given to the child.  The Lord Himself has set the perfect example for us in this area.  He NEVER chastens His children who disobey due to ignorance of His commands.  He always withholds chastening until the child of God comes to knowledge of the truth and then rebels against the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.  And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  For they verily for a few days chastened [us] after their own pleasure; but he for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of his holiness.  Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.  Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;  And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.”  (Hebrews 12:4-13)

19) A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver [him], yet thou must do it again.
One of the greatest purposes of discipline is to break the will of rebellion, thus helping the child to avoid the upcoming wrath of man and God….
1.  Men who angrily receive the commands of those in authority will face the punishment of those in authority.  Better the child learn this lesson when young, being punished at the hand of a loving parent, than to face the punishment of an uncaring human government or the wrath of Almighty God.
2.  If we remove the angry, rebellious child from his deserved discipline… the rebellion issue will be faced over and over again.  Better to impart discipline when we see the rebellious spirit, than to allow it to become a part of the child’s habitual lifestyle.

Keep in mind, another of the great benefits of discipline, is teaching the child a lifestyle of submission to higher authority.  In doing so, we are preparing their young hearts to submit to the Lord in salvation and service to Him.  How sad if a parent will see their child condemned to the Lake of Fire in the last judgment and realize they are partially responsible by allowing their child to develop a lifestyle of rebellious behavior.

That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:  And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation [that] set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.”   (Psalms 78:7-8)

SUMMARY:

As our study progresses, these are the principles we have learned about the forming and keeping of our relationships with others:
Principle #1 – Relationships are formed and sustained when benefits can be received through the relationship.
Principle #2 – Honesty is another key factor in the forming and sustaining of strong relationships.
Principle #3 – Relationships require a gracious, humble, giving of oneself for those who are undeserving of our aid.
Principle #4 – Relationships should not be taken for granted, nor should the actions of our friends on our behalf be ignored, unappreciated, or neglected.  To the best of our ability we are to seek to give back to those who sacrificially give to us.
Principle #5 – Both wisdom and understanding are vital assets to obtaining quality relationships with others.
Principle #6 – Godly relationships require us to recognize our shortcomings and the strength of others around us.
Principle #7 – Forgiveness is another key factor in possessing successful relationships.
Principle #8 – We are to recognize the authority they hold over us and recognize the great affect that they have in our lives.
Principle #9 – We should be constantly thinking of our actions effects on their wellbeing.
Principle #10 – We are to seek to help secure the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our acquaintances.
Principle #11 – By obeying those in authority, punishment is avoided and a groundwork for success is laid.
Principle #12 – Helping the needy is a wonderful opportunity to serve the Lord and receive His blessings.
Principle #13 – Parents are to chasten their children, using discipline to those who are rebellious.
Principle #14 – Through discipline, a child can develop a lifestyle of submission to authority, laying the groundwork of submission to Christ for their salvation.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

13) A foolish son [is] the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife [are] a continual dropping.
14) House and riches [are] the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife [is] from the LORD.
15) Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

We now continue Solomon’s teachings on the many principles from God’s Word we can use in the forming and developing solid relationships with others…

EXPOSITION:

12) The king’s wrath [is] as the roaring of a lion; but his favour [is] as dew upon the grass.
Principle #1 – To enhance and guide our relationships with others, we are to recognize the authority they hold over us and recognize the great affect that they have in our lives.

1.  When those in authority turn their anger towards us, they can be an unrelenting destructive force in our lives. Much like a hungry lion who stalks then consumes his prey.
2.  When we please those who are in authority, they can be a refreshing, strengthening influence, helping us to achieve our life goals.

We should never take for granted the great influence of those in authority over us.  Their intervention in our lives can, many times determine our successes or failures in life. Because of this, we should always carefully weigh our responses to them, taking into consideration the long term results of any action that may displease or dishonor them.
In this decision we are to take into account the desires of our Lord, the One who holds the supreme authority over us…  We possess a great need to reverence and submit to the will and ways of the Lord, the One who holds the absolute control over our temporal and eternal lives.

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.  But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”   (Luke 12:4-5)

13) A foolish son [is] the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife [are] a continual dropping.
Principle #2 – To strengthen our relationships with others, we should be constantly thinking of our actions effects on their wellbeing.

1.  A son who does not apply the Word to their lives, causes distress and eventual ruin in the life of their father.
2.  A spouse that consistently causes disagreements and separation are a unrelenting irritation, distraction, tension and distress (like a Chinese water torture) to their spouse.

In principle one of this text, we saw the need to consider the results of our actions upon ourselves (in the treatment of those in authority).  What are two greatest ways we can hinder others through our actions?
a.  Not applying God’s Word to our thoughts and actions.  This causes us to set the wrong example for others, and also it brings worry and sadness upon those who care the most for us.
b.  Not working for peace and harmony.  This causes those around us to be distracted from pursuing their goals and fulfilling their responsibilities, it also causes separation, and it opens the door for sinful attitudes (such as anger) to enter the relationship.

Also, notice that a father/son and spousal relationship is being used as examples.  This points us to the fact that, in most cases, our actions will have the greatest effect on those who are the closest to us.

For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.  These things command and teach.  Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”   (1 Timothy 4:10-13)

Finally, [be ye] all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, [be] pitiful, [be] courteous:   Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.  For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:  Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.”  (1 Peter 3:8-11)

14) House and riches [are] the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife [is] from the LORD.  15) Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
Principle #3 – to fulfill our responsibility towards others and develop our relationships, we are to seek to help secure the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our acquaintances.

1.  Gifts that are given to help meet the physical needs of others show a heart of love and concern, much like the inheritance left to the child by the loving parent.
2.  Gifts given to help meet the spiritual and emotional needs of others also show a love and concern, much like the giving of a wise spouse by the Lord.

Do we often think about the needs of those who are close to us?  Are we willing to expend our time, effort and possessions to supply the life necessities of our companions?  This is all a part of being there in their time of need and proving ourselves to be true friends.  As we play a role in helping others to meet their needs is effectively allowing the Lord to work through us….

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”  (James 1:17)

Of course, our responsibilities to help others DOES NOT extend to those who are lazy and purposefully suffering want (vs 15)….
1.  A lazy, uncaring attitude results in being unaware of what is taking place around us.
2.  A person who is not industrious, actively working to meet their needs, will

Suffering lack is a natural result of laziness and idleness and is one tool used by the Lord to show others their need to live responsibly.   In this case, we are to share instruction from the Word that will help them to understand their need to diligently seek their needs.
However, we are to be certain to help those who, in spite of their efforts to meet their own needs, still find themselves lacking the necessities of life.

For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;  Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:  Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.  For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”   (2 Thessalonians 3:7-10)

SUMMARY:

As our study progresses, these are the principles we have learned about the forming and keeping of our relationships with others:
Principle #1 – Relationships are formed and sustained when benefits can be received through the relationship.
Principle #2 – Honesty is another key factor in the forming and sustaining of strong relationships.

The Great Power Of The Conscience On Display…

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”   (Proverbs 28:1 – KJV)

For the SIH posting on this subject:

The Human Conscience Series: “Summary Of Our Study”

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth:

but the righteous are bold as a lion.

(Prov 28:1)

As our study on the human conscience comes to an end. I would like us to take a few moments to review our study and look at a text from Proverbs 28:1…. The wicked flee when no man pursueth:  but the righteous are bold as a lion.  (Prov 28:1)

 THE SCRIPTURES:

1) The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.   (Proverbs 28:1 – KJV)

1) The lawless, fleeth when no man pursueth, but, the righteous, like a lion, are confident.   (Proverbs 28:1 – EBR)

THE STUDY:

What a grand way to end our study of the human conscience, we will now take a few moments to study our theme verse.  A verse that is a great summary to our entire series…

Here, we see the work of the conscience in the life one who has been unfaithful to the Lord and following a path of sin….

The wicked flee when no man pursueth:

“Those who have broken the commands of the Lord will run to a hiding place when no man is hunting or persecuting them.”  Why will this take place?  Why is one a fugitive when one man is attempting to catch and harm him?  He does this because of the powerful testimony of the conscience at work in his life.

We have all experienced guilt in our lives.  It is a very powerful emotion that changes the way we perceive everything around us…. a perfect example of the power of guilt is found in Leviticus 26:27-37.  Here, the Lord is speaking to those who have willfully rebelled against His desires for the nation of Israel. They had chosen to replace the worship of Jehovah with the worship of false idols.  Look at how He responds to their sinfulness…
27) And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;

Due to their willful rebellion against the Lord and the testimony of their conscience…
28) Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins…

The Lord would intervene in two ways:

First, He would take away many of the blessings that they no longer appreciated…
29) And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.
30) And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.
31) And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.
32) And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.
33) And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.
34) Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye [be] in your enemies’ land; [even] then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.
35) As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.

Secondly, He would placed in their hearts a spirit of fear and paranoia, through the continuing testimony of their conscience….
36) And upon them that are left [alive] of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
37) And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

but the righteous are bold as a lion.

In comparison, those who are diligent in following the promptings of their conscience, possess an inner spiritual confidence and strength that is founded upon their close relationship with their Lord.  We have that principle shown to us in 1 John 3:19-22 ….
19) And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
By knowing that we have applied the truth of God to our lives, we can have confidence that we are one of His people.
20) For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
If our human fallen fleshly conscience is telling us that we have sin in our lives, how many more sins are seen by the Holy God who knows all things?  If our conscience is telling us we have sin in our life, we can rest assured our sin does not stop there.  There are probably many other sins we commit that are known by God but unknown to us at our current level of spiritual maturity.

21) Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.
22) And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
The blessing of having a clear conscience before God involves:
1.  knowing we have a close relationship with Him, we are saved and putting Him first in our lives.
2.  knowing that the same God that saved us, is the same God that promises to be with us, lead us, protect us and accompany us throughout our walk on earth.  We can no with certainty He will bless us for our faithfulness to Him.
3.  knowing that as we pray in His will, He will grant our requests as He works out what is best for our lives.

All of this becomes a reality to us as we see His gracious intervention exhibited in our lives through a changed life of obedience to Him.  When we see obedience in our lives, we are also viewing His grace at work in our lives.  Our lives of obedience is a great source of confidence that we are truly saved and in a close walk with Him.

Proverb 28:1 is a case study of the results of going against the urgings of our conscience and committing willful, rebellious sin in the life….
1. The Lord takes away material blessings
2. The Lord takes away spiritual blessings of confidence, bravery and reliance upon Him
3. The Lord allows them to become a defeated and powerless people that was bringing shame to the cause of their Lord.

And in comparison the results of following our conscience and living lives of service that glorify and honor Him…
1.  We know the Lord will meet our every need as our loving heavenly Father.
2.  We know the Lord will bless us spiritually granting us confidence, bravery and reliance upon Him.
3.  We know the Lord will enable us to be powerful, victorious servants, glorifying Him in all areas of our lives.

After reading these texts, helping us to understand the benefits of following our conscience, and seeing the harmful results of ignoring the conscience’s testimony in our lives, how can we not strive to follow our conscience every day?   In doing so, we will be glorifying our Lord and living a blessed life of close communion with Him.

THE SUMMARY:

In our study of the human conscience we have seen:

Lesson One and Lesson Four
1.That the conscience is the gracious gift given by God that is a guide for our lives.  The guiding of the conscience is based upon the perceived truth that we have within us. This emphasizes to us the importance of having a well-rounded knowledge of Scripture which can form the foundation of the working of our conscience.
2.  The conviction of the conscience and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, although similar and related are, in actually, two separate types of conviction from the Lord.

We saw that conscience conviction without the Holy Spirit’s workings results in: sorrow without Godly intervention and eternal spiritual death. Compare this to the conscience that is used as a tool by the Holy Spirit to convict and convince results in: sorrow that results in turning from the sin to service to God;  sorrow that is a gift of God’s grace; sorrow that results in repentance and salvation; sorrow for sin that is permanent; and sorrow that results in Godliness as a top priority of life.

Lesson Two
3.  The conscience of man was active within men during the times of the Old Testament and times of the New Testament as well.

Lesson Three
4.    The conscience works in many and varied ways but all its workings are aimed towards bringing us into alignment with the will of God for our lives.

Lesson Five
5.   For the truth of God’s Word to affect our lifestyle, the truth must be received in our mind and conscience and then applied to our will.

Lesson Six
6.  The ministries of the conscience can be pictured by a messenger, an eye, and a rod.  It is through its three ministries that we can come to understand our true spiritual condition and the spiritual needs of our lives

Lesson Seven
7.  The conscience helps us in seven ways to better serve Christ… It guides our conduct; It strengthens us for service; it enhances our fellowship;  it encourages our witnessing; it aids our prayerlife; it teaches us to be Godly citizens; it builds our character.

Lesson Eight through Eleven
8.  There are four types of consciences described in the Bible: Good, Strong, Weak, and Evil.
9.  We looked at the many differing characteristics, marks and keys to properly deal with each type in our life.
10.  We are to strive to obtain a good and strong conscience; while constantly on guard against allowing our conscience to become weak, or evil.
11.  One of the main keys to developing the desired type of conscience lies in our hearing, believing, and applying the truths of God’s Word to our life.  Also, the need to heed the urgings of the conscience and to live our lives according to it’s leadership is an important factor as well.

Lesson Twelve
12. We saw the importance of submitting to the God-given authorities that are over us.  These included (family, church and government)
13.  We saw several examples of those who chose to follow the Lord’s will for their lives and in doing so, they rebelled against sinful desires of the government that was over them.
14. Finally, in the rare event we must disobey the government to make Christ our first priority we must: be sure we have a consistent Godly testimony; disobey only based upon CLEAR Biblical teachings; always be exhibiting love and concern for others during our disobedience; disobey with the goal to be a witness of the glory of God; behave as Christ would behave.

By God’s grace let us all be aware of the importance and condition of our consciences.  In doing so, let us all strive to maintain a good and strong conscience that will a constant companion as we live our lives for Christ.

Saturday Video Pick Of The Week…

Is God Pleased With The Worship In Our Church?…

Pastor John MacArthur on a Grace To You television broadcast

Making It Plain: “Grace” = Undeserved Favor

SIH TOTT ICONThe word “grace” comes from the Latin word “gratia” which means:
1.  “favor”
2.  “thanks”
3.  “pleasing”
4.  “grateful”

The term “grace” is used many times in both the OT and the NT of the  KJV Bible…

In the Old Testament, it is translated from the Hebrew word “chen” which means:
1. precious kindness
2. pleasant favor

In the New Testament, it is translated from the Greek word “charis” which means:
1.  undeserved benefit or gift
2.  that which produces happiness, rejoicing, thankfulness
3.  to be made acceptable

The idea is this…
The term “grace” means “undeserved favor that makes one acceptable and produces a thankful and joyous attitude.

Because, we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, the “wages we deserve to receive is physical, spiritual, and eternal death.  Yet the Lord, by grace makes salvation available to any that repent of their sin and believe on His name….

For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”   (Romans 6:23)

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)  And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.   (Ephesians 2:4-9)

Salvation for our sins and the receipt of eternal life is one of the greatest displays of the Lord’s grace given to us in the Scripture, but His grace touches every area of our life.  The eternal blessings that await us throughout eternity, the spiritual blessings we receive while yet on the earth, and the temporal blessings that meet our physical needs are all acts of grace.

ANYTHING that takes place in our life, apart from entrance into the Lake of Fire is an undeserved blessing that in given to us by the gracious hand of Almighty God.

That is why we are told…

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.  (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

A Good Testimony = Being Wise, Honest and Forgiving…

SIH HALTAL ICONHe that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.  A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall perish.  Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass over a transgression. (Proverbs 19:8-11)

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

God’s Word Affects: Our Relationships With Others (2): Proverbs 19:8-11

8) He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
9) A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall perish.
10) Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11) The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass over a transgression.

We now continue Solomon’s teachings on the many principles from God’s Word we can use in the forming and developing solid relationships with others…

EXPOSITION:

8) He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
Principle #1 – Both wisdom and understanding are vital assets to obtaining quality relationships with others.
1.  When we seek and obtain the application of God’s Word to our life, we are only helping ourselves in every area of our life, including our relationships with others.  In doing so, we are showing a love and willingness to sacrifice of ourselves for our own long-term good.
2.  Likewise, those who securely hold fast to understanding the truths of God will bring upon themselves that which is pleasing to the Lord, their associates, and themselves.

The more of the Word that we understand and apply, the more helpful we become to others.  Through our acts of kindness, Godly counsel, and concern for others, our relationships are nurtured and strengthened.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”   (John 14:21)

9) A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall perish.
As we have already seen in verse 5 of this text, deceit and fraud will only hinder our relationships.
1.  Those who profess falsehoods against others will not be able to escape the deserved results of their actions.
2.  Those who speak falsely will eventually experience utter ruin.

Why would Solomon repeat this dire warning to us?  Perhaps, it is due to the serious results of dishonesty in our relationships.  There is nothing that will destroy a relationship more quickly than dishonesty, which will foster an attitude of distrust and resentment.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”   (Revelation 21:7-8)

10) Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
Principle #2 – Godly relationships require us to recognize our shortcomings and the strength of others around us.
1.  To find joy in their position in life is not beneficial for the fool.  This breeds a spirit of contentment and lack of want which hinders them seeing their need of forgiveness and change.
2.  Likewise, it is not beneficial for a foolish servant to be promoted to rule over those who have a greater amount of wisdom and ability.

True friends will recognize the need to take a back seat to those of greater knowledge and abilities in certain areas of their relationship.  They will be ready to accept responsibilities in their areas of strength, while turning over responsibilities in areas of their weakness.  This is a key principle in bringing unity and success to our relationships.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.  Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness.  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”   (James 4:8-10)

11) The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass over a transgression.
Principle #3 – Forgiveness is another key factor in possessing successful relationships.
1.  Knowledge that produces success will cause a man to patiently hold back his wrathful anger.
2.  It will bring praise and honor of others, when a man overlooks actions that step over the line in opposition to  him.

Forgiveness is releasing the offender from deserved punishment for the actions he has performed against us.  It is saying “Although you have brought harm upon me, I do not desire for you to be punished for your actions.”  It is a wiliness to lay down our thoughts and desires for vengeance, by overlooking their wrongdoing.  How important forgiveness is to any relationship.   Because we are fallen creatures, we will fail, abuse, and bring harm upon others.  No one is exempt from this.  It is during these times, that a spirit of forgiveness must be had to sustain the relationship.  By forgiving, not only are we seeking to continue the relationship, but we are exhibiting one of the greatest testimonies of Christ (His love, forgiveness and sacrifice) that is possible to a lost and dying world.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;  Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also [do] ye.”   (Colossians 3:12-13)

SUMMARY:

In our study  so far, these are the principles we have learned about the forming and keeping of our relationships with others:

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Are Our Friendships Based On Selfishness Or Grace?

SIH HALTAL ICONWealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.  A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall not escape.  Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man [is] a friend to him that giveth gifts.  All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth [them with] words, [yet] they [are] wanting [to him].  (Proverbs 19:4-7)

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

God’s Word Affects: Our Relationships With Others (1): Proverbs 19:4-7

4) Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.
5) A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall not escape.
6) Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man [is] a friend to him that giveth gifts.
7) All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth [them with] words, [yet] they [are] wanting [to him].

In the next section of this chapter, we find a large section (vs 4-19) devoted to showing us many principles from God’s Word in forming and developing solid relationships with others…

EXPOSITION:

4) Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.
Principle #1 – Friendships are formed and sustained when benefits can be received through the relationship.
1.  The possibility of personal gain is a wonderful motivator to the forming of relationships.  Whether that gain would be physical or spiritual type of wealth, it is important that we show ourselves as beneficial to those around us.
2.  Those who offer nothing of value to give in a relationship, many times will be rejected by those around them.

When others see us do they see possible benefits to forming a relationship with us?  As the children of the Lord, we are spiritually rich beyond measure.  We have much to offer to anyone who would form a relationship with us.  The key is to, through a Godly testimony, show to others the many graces that have been imparted to us from our heavenly Father.

He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.  My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.  They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.  I called my servant, and he gave [me] no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.  My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s [sake] of mine own body.”  (Job 19:13-17)

5) A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall not escape.
Principle #2 – Honesty is another key factor in the forming and sustaining of strong relationships.
1.  Those who speak deceit will not remain without blame nor recompense
2.  Those who speak lies will not be released and walk away unharmed.

Those who are deceitful will always reap the physical and spiritual results of that deceit.  One result of deceitful living is that it dampens the ability to form quality friendships with others.  When others see a lifestyle of deceit in an individual, they will reject them as possible friends, knowing they cannot be trusted.

A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”   (Proverbs 6:19)

6) Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man [is] a friend to him that giveth gifts.
Principle #3 – Friendships require a gracious, humble, giving of oneself for those who are undeserving of our aid.
1.  Citizens make requests of a prince, not deserving their request to be granted.  They are hoping for his grace to be shown.
2.  Likewise, anyone who is willing to give to the undeserving are showing themselves to be friendly and make themselves prime candidates for friendship.

When we show that we have a gracious spirit that is willing to give to the undeserving, many will seek to form relationships with us.  Why is this? They recognize a willingness to accept them as they are and a desire to be of aid to them, in spite of the condition in which they currently find themselves.

A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.”   (Proverbs 18:16)

7) All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth [them with] words, [yet] they [are] wanting [to him].

Principle #4 – Relationships, and the acts of others on our behalf, should not be taken for granted.
Solomon now gives us an illustration summarizing what we have seen so far…
1.  Those who bring nothing beneficial to a relationship are rejected by others, even those of his own family.
2.  Although he runs after others seeking their continual aid, his words fall short, and he is unsuccessful in his attempts to persuade them.

Many times, relationships fail when the deeds of our friends are ignored, unappreciated, or neglected.  They do not desire to continue in their relationship realizing “it is all give and no take”, feeling their friend is taking advantage of them.  To the best of our ability we are to seek to show appreciation and be willing to give back to those who sacrificially give on our behalf.

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what [doth it] profit?”   (James 2:15-16)

SUMMARY:

Just  quick note:  Many of the principles discussed in this section revolve around the selfish nature of mankind:
1.  We only want to form relationships with those from whom we can benefit
2.  We will break off relationships when we feel abused, and unappreciated
3.  We will come before others asking for benefits when we know we do not deserve them.

Keep in mind, the Lord is not justifying this type of behavior.  He is simply teaching us that, based upon the selfishness of fallen mankind, several principles are to be followed to form long-lasting relationships.  Aren’t we all glad that our Lord didn’t have this selfish attitude towards us when He came to the earth and gave Himself for us?

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;  And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  (Philippians 2:5-11)

In this first part of our study these are the principles we have learned about the forming and keeping of our relationships with others:
Principle #1 – Relationships are formed and sustained when benefits can be received through the relationship.
Principle #2 – Honesty is another key factor in the forming and sustaining of strong relationships.
Principle #3 – Relationships require a gracious, humble, giving of oneself for those who are undeserving of our aid.
Principle #4 – Relationships should not be taken for granted, nor should the actions of our friends on our behalf be ignored, unappreciated, or neglected.  To the best of our ability we are to seek to give back to those who sacrificially give to us.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Without God’s Word Our Life Is Foolish …

SIH HALTAL ICONBetter [is] the poor that walketh in his integrity, than [he that is] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.  Also, [that] the soul [be] without knowledge, [it is] not good; and he that hasteth with [his] feet sinneth.  The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.  (Proverbs 19:1-3)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 19:1-3

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

God’s Word Affects: Our Walk Of Life: Proverbs 19:1-3

 1) Better [is] the poor that walketh in his integrity, than [he that is] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
2) Also, [that] the soul [be] without knowledge, [it is] not good; and he that hasteth with [his] feet sinneth.
3) The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

Throughout this chapter we will see the terms knowledge, understanding and wisdom used repeatedly.  We have already studied the difference between these terms but as a quick review, we need to keep in mind:
1. knowledge – facts that we learn from the Word of God
2. understanding – why these facts are so and how they relate to other facts in the Word
3. wisdom – the application of the truths of the Word to our lives.

The amount of Godly knowledge we possess affects the level of spirituality in our walk of life…

EXPOSITION:

1) Better [is] the poor that walketh in his integrity, than [he that is] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
1.  It is a better thing to be destitute and lacking in earthly possessions and possess a lifestyle that is keeping God’s Word in sincerity….
2. A person who uses deceitful speech and actions and lacks all Godly knowledge.

To live a life in submission to the will and ways of the Lord is of far greater value than any wealth this world has to offer.

“Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?  But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?”   (James 2:5-6)

2) Also, [that] the soul [be] without knowledge, [it is] not good; and he that hasteth with [his] feet sinneth.
1.  A lack of knowledge of the truths of the Word is not pleasing to the Lord, nor beneficial to the person.
2.  A person who hurries into a situation with being prepared with a knowledge of the Word and reflection upon the will of God for his life is living selfishly putting himself, and his desires before the desires of the Lord for his life.

“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and [in] all judgment;  That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.”   (Philippians 1:9-11)

3) The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.
1.  a lack of knowledge will make the path of life crooked and twisted
2.  without knowledge the desires of a man will boil up and spout against the Lord

A man who lacks knowledge of God’s Word will find his life distorted as its departs from the path the Lord has given all of us in His Word.

“And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.  But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.  Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.”   (Acts 13:44-46)

“And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.  And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and [they shall be] driven to darkness.”  (Isaiah 8:21-22)

SUMMARY:

How does God’s Word affect our lives?
1.  It gives our life value and purpose.
2.  It makes our life pleasing to God and beneficial to others.
3.  It puts our life in alignment with the will of God, allowing us to accomplish His purposes for us.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

Do We Give Others The Value They Deserve?

SIH HALTAL ICON[Whoso] findeth a wife findeth a good [thing], and obtaineth favour of the LORD.  The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.  A man [that hath] friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:22-24)
