SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

Increasing Life’s Joy: The Word Of The Lord Ultimately Prevails 22:12-15

12) The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
13) The slothful [man] saith, [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
14) The mouth of strange women [is] a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
15) Foolishness [is] bound in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Solomon looks at another factor, that when understood, will increase our joy, the Word will ultimate prevail…

EXPOSITION:

12) The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
1.  The Lord’s attention is directed towards the continuance, and protection, of the truths of His Word
2.  Because of this, the Lord overcomes and brings to nothing the speech of those who pervert His truths.

The completed Word of God (the Holy Bible) is guarded and sustained by the Lord.

Thy word [is] true [from] the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments [endureth] for ever.”  (Psalms 119:160)

Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.”   (Psalms 119:152)

13) The slothful [man] saith, [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
Those who are lazy declare, there is a lion outside our dwelling, if I step outside to the streets, I will be killed.

The lazy man will use any excuse to avoid doing that which his responsibility.  This attitude will only result in eventual ruin.  However, by following the Word and keeping the responsibilities given to us in the Word, we will find ourselves sustained and blessed.

And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, [is] a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it [are] men of a great stature.  And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, [which come] of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”   (Numbers 13:32-33)

14) The mouth of strange women [is] a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
1.  The speech of the foreign, ungodly woman is an inescapable trap that is set.
2.  Those who are despised and rejected by God will be caught by it.

The wicked person attempts to lure others into the traps that they have laid.  Those who apply God’s Word through wisdom, will be protected from these traps.  However the Lord allows the ungodly to go their way and fall into these traps.

So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: [and] they walked in their own counsels.”   (Psalms 81:12)

And when the LORD saw [it], he abhorred [them], because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.  And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end [shall be]: for they [are] a very froward generation, children in whom [is] no faith.”   (Deuteronomy 32:19-20)

15) Foolishness [is] bound in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
1.  The desires of a child (beginning in infancy) are joined strongly to a lack of truth and wisdom.
2.  The weapon of teaching, warning and chastening will drive those desires from the child.

It is only through the application of God’s Word to a child’s life, at a young age, that the sinful desires of that child will be driven away.

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”   (Ephesians 2:2-3)

SUMMARY:

We can see the prevailing force of God’s Word in four ways…
1.  The completed Word of God (the Holy Bible) is guarded and continued by the Lord.
2.  A lazy attitude concerning God’s Word will only result in eventual ruin.  By keeping the Word’s responsibilities , we will find ourselves sustained and blessed.
3.  For those who apply God’s Word through wisdom, they will be protected from the traps of the wicked.
4.  The weapons of teaching, warning and chastening  found in the Word, will drive ungodly desires from the child.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
