SIH TOTT ICONRevelation 3:1 KJV

“And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.”

In this devotional, we will continue to look at the seven ministries of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2), which is described in this passage as the “seven Spirits of God”.  For our devotion this morning, we will be looking at “The Spirit of wisdom” and “The Spirit of understanding”.

What do we learn about the ministries of the Holy Spirit from these titles?   The Spirit of God is the One that opens the eyes of God’s people giving them a comprehension of God’s Word (understanding), as well as insight into its application to their lives (wisdom).

A.  understanding – When we possess understanding, we not only accept His Word as a series of facts, but we are also given insight into WHY these things are so. This is vital for the life of every Christian.  An understanding of His truths greatly effects the MOTIVATIONS for our service.

For example, it is one thing to know that we are to live lives pleasing to the Lord.  But when we grasp that obedience results in the following, our motivation for service is drastically effected:

  1. a display of Christ to a lost world,
  2. a display of appreciation for all He has done for us,
  3. a display of our status as members of both the spiritual nation of Israel and the family of God,
  4. and the receipt of temporal blessings and future rewards,
  5. etc etc

B.  wisdom – When we possess wisdom, we are aware of how to apply the principles of God’s Word to our day to day life. Wisdom shows us HOW to make Godly decisions, HOW to avoid temptations, HOW to pray… the list is endless. Wisdom effects the ACTIONS of our service.

For example, wisdom shows us the way to avoid temptations involve:

  1. keeping our minds upon Christ and His Word
  2. learn how Satan works
  3. learn the areas where we are most susceptible to temptations
  4. avoid situations where we will be tempted
  5. be ever vigilant to recognize attacks that are taking place
  6. consistently recognize our inability and seek Christ’s enablement to overcome temptation
  7. etc etc

Understanding answers the WHY…. Wisdom answers the HOW.  Understanding affects our MOTIVES for service… Wisdom affects our ACTS of service.

Both understanding and wisdom are recognized as essentials for service in the cause of Christ…

Colossians 1:8-10 KJV – “Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;  That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work,…”

Both of these come to us through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian.

Folks, as we open His Word on a day to day basis and we have thankful hearts pointed towards the Holy Spirit.  It is only through Him that we can come to an understanding of the truths of the Word and the wisdom needed to apply those truths to our lives!  What would we do without either of these?  Our service to the Lord would be impossible.

May the Lord bless us as we seek to serve Him, the One that is so clearly revealed to us in the book of   the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
