SIH TOTT ICONRev 6:12-14 KJV

(12)  And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake;

(14)  … and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

With the opening of the sixth seal, John sees catastrophic changes taking place on the earth and in the heavens.  In today’s text, we can see some of the changes that will take place on the earth.  Although this seal contains much symbolism, an affirmation of these types of changes at the second coming of Christ can be found elsewhere in the Holy Scriptures (Zech 14:3-7 etc)

At the Lord’s coming, His wrath is sent against sinful mankind along with His physical arrival upon the earth, will cause this great physical upheaval to take place on the earth. In Zechariah, we are told that this upheaval will cause men to “flee like as when they fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah.  Everything that we count as a sure, firm foundation (the earth, mountains, foundations of buildings etc) will be shaken and brought down by the Lord Almighty. At this time, the entire world will be renovated and prepared to be our eternal dwelling place (2 Pet 3:10-13).

What an awesome display of the Lord’s power will be seen at this time!

Folks, on a physical level, there is nothing that offers true stability, assurance and security in the world around us.  The only physical stability that can be found is centered upon Christ and His power as He sustains all things and continually intervenes causing them to continue on (Col 1:17).

However, the unreliability of the things found in this PHYSICAL world stand as a great reminder to us of the unreliability of the SPIRITUAL offerings of this world.  The teachings, philosophies, religions and spiritual powers of this fallen world can offer no lasting security to anyone.  Just as this physical earth will pass away and shown to be of no eternal value, so too, the spiritual offerings of this world will be clearly shown to be worthless and vain when Christ comes in His glory.

Folks, is our hope of eternal life based upon Christ or the spiritual offerings of this temporal, fallen world?   This is no small issue.  Just like this physical world’s passing away, if our salvation is based upon anyone, or anything, other than Christ and His work, that salvation will be shaken and shattered at His coming.  Our depravity and inherent unrighteousness stand in contrast overruling any good works, hypocritical religiosity, or false assurances that we may possess.

May we all take a moment to make sure our salvation is based upon Christ and Him alone…

1Pe 1:3-9 KJV

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,  Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:  That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:  Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:  Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”
