And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
The breaking of seal six reveals to John great changes that will take place in the world immediately prior to, and during, the second coming of Christ. In this section of Scripture, we read about great changes that will take place specifically in the heavens when Christ returns. Although there are other verses in the Bible that seem to describe heavenly changes at the appearance of Christ (Matt 24:29, Isaiah 13:9-12 etc), we must be careful to not quickly assume that the descriptions in Revelation are to be taken with absolute literalness. In some aspects, this text was meant to be read in symbolic fashion.
What is the symbolic truth we can understand in this seal? The basic principle we can see in all of these descriptions is the fact that the heavens will be darkened resulting in light being taken from the world. If we understand that throughout the Scriptures the truths of God Word is described as “light”, we can easily understand that seal six tells us that as the truth of God is rejected by man, they will gradually be removed from the earth (1 Tim 4:1, 2 Peter 3:2-4 etc.)
Even the descriptive phrase the heaven departed as “a scroll rolled together” gives us a wonderful picture of the truths of God (written in scrolls in those days) would be hidden from man as they turned from His Word and rejected its teachings.
Folks, do not be surprised to see the world rejecting the truth, and generation by generation, the world is losing the truth that we have been given. As Christians, we are to use these things to remind us of the need to hold fast to that which we possess and pass it down to the next generation so that the truths of God might continue to exist and lead others to Christ.
2Ti 1:13-14 KJV – “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.”
Eph 6:4 KJV – “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
