SIH TOTT ICONRev 12:4 KJV – And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

As John sees the dragon prepared to devour the woman’s child, we learn of Satan’s never ending attempts to stop Christ from accomplishing the ministry given to Him by His Father.  Satan could stop Christ in three ways:

  1. First, Satan attempted to stop Christ from entering this world. We can see this by Satan’s attempts to destroy the Nation of Israel/Judah, the physical ancestors of Christ.  He did this through the use of many Gentile World Empires… enslavement in Egypt (Exodus 1:1), captivity by Babylon (Lamentations 1:-5:) etc.
  1. Secondly, Satan could stop Christ by killing Him prior to the completion of His work. We see this in Herod’s killing of the unborn male children 2 yrs old and under (Matt 2:16); the crowd desiring to cast Him off the cliff (Luke 4:29-30); and others.
  1. Thirdly, Satan could stop Christ by causing Him to sin. We can see this in Satan’s temptation of Christ (Matt 4:11);  the times He faced opposition tempting Him to respond in ungodly ways, the greatest of these was during the crucifixion itself (Luke 23:34); and many others.

Satan’s efforts were to no avail… Christ was faithful to His Father even unto death and, in doing so, brought Satan to absolute defeat (Hebrews 2:14-15).

Although Satan is already defeated, he continues to oppose Christ and His servants in the world today.  We, as faithful servants of the Lord, can expect to face opposition from Satan and the fallen world around us (John 15:18-23, 1 Peter 5:8).

May we all oppose the workings of Satan in our lives with both vigilance and faith…  with vigilance, knowing that Satan is a powerful, deceptive foe; with faith, knowing that Satan has already been defeated and only has a short time until he will face his eternal punishment.

(Rev 12:12 KJV)  “Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.”

One thing I have learned is to never attempt to fight satan alone as he is smarter and more powerful than me. You and me Jesus is the only way to defeat him

Amen! Some of us recognize that he is smarter and more powerful, others have not ocme to understand it yet, but it is true for all of us! Thansk for your comments !

Do you ever contemplate the sheer anger and hatred Satan feels? I mean, he know his theology as well as the next guy, and he know ultimately he is doomed. Or, do you think he might actually have deluded himself into believing he might win? I ponder that sometimes.

If he knows he is doomed, then it makes his efforts doubly bad. But I wonder that sometimes, if he actually gets that he is eventually headed for defeat.

      Hi Wally,

Yeh, it is an interesting question indeed. It seems as if Satan knows he is defeated and is simply trying to do as much damage as possible until his time is up….

Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. (Revelation 12:12)

      Lord bless you Wally!

I think this is such a vivid picture of Satan’s warfare against Christ. Thank you for this

    • Rob Barkman says:

Yep, I agree. Revelation is filled with wonderful symbolism that can present many very important truths in one simple set of symbols. Lord bless you SJ!
