SIH TOTT ICON(Rev 12:5 KJV)  And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Christ, the man child in John’s vision, is said to “rule all nations with a rod of iron”.   This phrase comes from a prophecy found in Psalm 2:7-9…
“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

What does the phrase “rule/break with a rod of iron” teach us about the ministry of Christ?

1.   The Old Testament (Psalm 2:7-9) vocabulary for this phrase means “to break with a fighting stick of iron”…
This emphasizes the Lord’s strength, authority and victory over His enemies at His second coming.  Note this phrase is accompanied by the phrase “thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel” which emphasizes the destructive, victorious use of the rod over His enemies.

2.  The New Testament (Revelation 12:5) vocabulary for this phrase means “to shepherd with a walking staff of iron”…
In this context, it emphasizes Christ’s ministry to His people (both Jew and Gentile alike), during His first coming.  In this phrase, we can see His authority and care of His people.  He acts as a shepherd to both Jewish and Gentile believers… leading, feeding and protecting them as He walked upon this earth.

(Note we find the phrase “rule with a rod of iron” in two other texts [Rev 2:27 & Rev 19:15], when kept in context, both refer to His dominance of His enemies at His second coming.)

Folks, how precious are these truths to His people…

First, we can see Christ as the One who is ultimately victorious over His enemies giving us hope and courage as we face the many spiritual battles in this fallen world around us.  He gives us future security, knowing Satan is a defeated foe.

But secondly, we can see Christ as our Lord and Shepherd.  He gives us current security, as the One that leads us, feeds us and protects us during our journey on this earth.

May we all think upon Christ today as Our Victorious Lord and Gracious Shepherd who has made our current and future lives secure in Him!

Very good thoughts, Rob. We do have a hope now and in the future, but only because of what Jesus has done for us. He is worthy of all glory and praise because He endured from birth to the death on the cross.

We who endure our persecutions will have a place in the glorious heavens with Him someday…

How very true Steve. One of the marks that a true salvation experience has taken place in a person’s life is that they will endure faithful unto the end. What a wonderful truth for all of us to know He will be with us and work in us even to the end. He will never let us go nor should we fear we are alone during the trials of life! Lord bless you! Thanks ofr the great comment!

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ: (Philippians 1:6)

    Christ our warrior and Victor.
