“And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.”

As John sees the fourth angel pour out his vial upon the sun, he is witnessing the judgment of God falling upon those who are actively worshipping idols.  This is because the sun is symbolic of false gods within the pages of the Scriptures.

Throughout history the sun has played a very important place in idolatrous worship.  The sun, being the central object of heaven in the daylight hours, has become a very popular part of Jehovah’s creation that fallen mankind chooses to worship.  The false God Baal, the sun god of the Babylonians, is the most well-known false god found in the Bible.  Other nations that worshipped sun gods mentioned in the Bible include Egypt, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome.

Even the title “Sunday”, the day set apart to worship God, probably finds its origins in sun worship.  While the names of the other days of the week find their origins in the Roman words for moon and five of the planets, other false gods they chose to worship.

Why do men choose to worship the creation of Jehovah instead of Jehovah, Himself?  Paul explains this phenomena in Romans 1:21-25…

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.   Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

To summarize Paul’s teachings, when fallen mankind chooses to reject the revelation of God that is given to them (whether by word, nature, or conscience), the Lord then allows them to progress into further rejection of Him resulting in them worshipping and serving the creature (themselves, other men, animals, plants, or inanimate parts of nature.)

This continuing rejection of the Lord is then exhibited in their lives by sexual perversion.  This is manifested in acts of homosexuality, fornication, adultery, beastiality, incest etc.  These are the natural fruits of rejecting Christ as Lord and giving their fleshly desires the place of priority in their lives.

When individuals, or nations as a whole, reject the Creator God, Jehovah, and turn to serve others, the presence and acceptance of these fruits will become a natural part of their existence.  This is what we see taking place in the lives of many individuals and nations today.

May we all understand the great necessity to accept Jesus as the Lord of our lives, and then as Christians, submitting our entire being over to His control.  To do anything less is to allow ourselves to be in submission to other “gods” and opens the door that allows our fleshly desires to rule over us.   This is the condition of lost mankind and those whom Paul describes as “carnal” (“fleshly”) Christians…

1Co 3:1-4 KJV

“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.   I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.   For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?   For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?”

Interesting study on the pagan tendencies to worship the Sun. May we instead worship the SON.
