Rev 17:5 KJV –

“And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

In this week’s series of devotions we will be concentrating on the false religions (and their false messengers) that are sent into this world.  They are symbolized by the character that John had seen … “I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast” (otherwise described as “the Great Whore”).

Our devotions for this week will concentrate on the 5 different titles given to this character….

  1. “The Great Whore”; 2. “Mystery”; 3. “Babylon The Great”;     4. “The Mother Of Harlots”;     5. “The Mother Of… Abominations Of The Earth”

In our devotion for this morning, we will be looking at the title “The Mother Of The Abominations Of The Earth”.   Not only do the false religions of this world produce spiritual harlotry, shown to us in the title “The Mother Of Harlots”, but they also produce the abominations that exist in the world around us.

What does it mean when the Bible speaks of an “abomination”?  Both the Hebrew and Greek words from which we get abomination holds the same meaning…
They describe something that: “is abhorred”, “is disgusting”, “is revolting”.
The root meaning of the Hebrew word is “to utterly loathe”
The root meaning of the Greek word is “to stink” (referring to things such as a decaying corpse).

These meanings help us to come to a clear understanding of what is meant by an abomination in God’s sight.  It is something that He hates, He is disgusted by it, it stinks in His nostrils.

It is important for our study this morning to note that many, but not all, of the times it is used the word “abomination” is used in connection to the sin of idolatry. This is the “product” of the religious kingdom of Satan.

The false teachings, the unscriptural practices, the selfish motives, the lies, the deceptions, and the evil fruits of sin that thrive in the idolatrous religions of this world, are an abhorrent stench in the nostrils of our Lord.  These religious kingdoms turn men from the truth of His Word to lies.  This leads men astray resulting in their rejection of Christ and eternal separation from Him.

May we all follow the wise advice of the Apostle Paul who said….

2Ti 3:13-15 KJV – “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.   But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;   And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

I was just commenting on another blog about a similar topic. The evil one has always sought to destroy the things of God. No doubt he thought he had accomplished this deed when Christ was crucified. Of course he found he was so wrong 3 days later when Christ arose!

Paul’s advise is as good as always. Study the truth of God’s word and continue in it and we have a lesser chance of going astray…

      Revelation has an interesting verse….

“Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” (Revelation 12:12)

      Thanks for the comment.

Interesting indeed! And the saddest of all is that even though Satan is doomed and has no power to change his eternal “home,” people of earth still can change their destiny.

Yet, despite the partial judgments and warnings and pleadings from the Lord, people will still fail to come unto Him! Revelation is scattered with many such examples in its words…

        How very sad this is!

It just shows us the result of sin in the life of each one of us …. spiritual blindness. Although we are warned and see these judgemnts take place they will not come apart from the Lord’s gracious intervention bringing us to Himself. such a wonderful Lord we serve, when we could not, He steps in and gives us the ability to see what lies ahead and choose to follow Him through His Spirit. Lord bless.

It is with great love that He cares for us, and with great sadness that He will judge those who refuse Him until the end!

He is a righteous Lord, perfect and holy. As such, everyone will receive their due from Him, both good and bad. That being the case, I’d much rather be on the side of the Lord now!

Good look at the word abomination given how homosexual activists say abomination doesn’t mean what we think it means for their cause.
