The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “so great riches is come to nought”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 18:17 – “For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.”

The rapid loss of the riches found in Satan’s kingdom, helps to illustrate the passing nature of the riches of this world.

Riches are fleeting…

Pro 23:4-5 – “Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.  Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.”

Therefore to love riches, and live our lives in their pursuit, leads to a worthless, wasted life…

1Ti 6:8-10 – In this text, we can see Paul giving young Timothy several different principles to live by in the area of worldly wealth:

  1. “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”

As Christians, we are to understand the true value found in worldly possessions. Their value only lies in meeting our physical needs.  Therefore, as long as we have enough to eat and clothe ourselves, we are to be content.   To have more than this is simply a luxury, and not a true necessity of life.

  1. “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”

An overabundance of the riches of the world can open us up to many temptations that we would not face otherwise.  When we have an excess of money, it gives us access to many areas of sin that, otherwise, would be closed to us.

  1. “For the love of money is the root of all evil:”

The lustful love to possess the world’s riches can be the beginning factor in all the sins of man.  This type of selfish love for overabundance, opens us up to willingness to commit ANY sin for the right price.   To have a lustful love of the money is a form of covetousness and idolatry, making riches His god.  Placing the receipt of wealth as the number one goal of our life, results in placing his faith and hope in it, thus hindering His faith in God.

  1. “which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

The results of this coveting of wealth results in being led away from the truths of God and living a Godly lifestyle, in doing so, they were only “stabbing ourselves”, bringing many heartaches (Godly judgment or Godly chastening) into our lives.

May we all receive God’s counsel with a humble spirit, being content with the necessities of life, putting Him first in all things, and allowing Him to bless us financially as He sees fit.

Revelation 18: Summary

SIH STSTA ICON

SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTER:

Beginning in chapter 17: we have seen the recipient of God’s wrath, the kingdoms of Satan presented in great detail. Both the characteristics and identity of both aspects of Satan’s kingdom are brought into view.  In the next section of our study, chapter 18, will present various warnings for mankind to separate themselves from the kingdom of Satan..

  1. The Results of Babylon’s Judgment 18:1-24
  2. Victory Announcement Declaring Babylon’s Fall 1-3
  3. Warnings for God’s People To Depart From Babylon 4-8
  4. Warnings for Kings of The World to Depart From Babylon 9-10
  5. Warnings for Merchants of the World To Depart From Babylon 11-17a
  6. Warnings for Mariners of the World To Depart From Babylon 17b-20
  7. Millstone Cast Upon Sea… the Final Destruction Of Babylon 21-24

SUMMARY OF EACH DIVISION OF CHAPTER:

I.  Victory Announcement Declaring Babylon’s Fall 1-3

John sees “another angel”, a messenger from God that has His authority and glory being shown through the angel’s ministry.

The angel declares that Babylon has fallen into total desolation.  Christ has gotten the final, total victory over the religious kingdom of Satan.  Her great fall takes place because of the horrendous sins that she has perpetuated upon lost mankind.  She has led lost men to live uncontrolled lives. forming sinful unions that brought earthly prosperity to her and those who unified with her.

II.  Warnings for God’s People To Depart From Babylon 4-8

The angel now gives a warning to the people of God to not form unions with her.    She has committed many sins and led mankind to do the same.  The saved are commanded to separate themselves form her wicked influences.  God has recognized all of her sinful actions and has prepared His wrath to fall upon her and those who have joined with her.

The false religions of the world are prideful, thinking only of herself and unconcerned about the eternal welfare of her followers.  Her pride led her to believe she is indestructible.   Because of her sinful pride and selfish deception of her followers, God’s wrath will fall quickly, unexpectedly and bring upon her ruin.

III.  Warnings for Kings of The World to Depart From Babylon 9-10

The angel, next warns the kings of the world to not join forces with Mystery Babylon.  There would be great enticement to do so, based upon great earthly gain awaiting those who join up with her.

However, at the defeat of Babylon, the kings will stand at a great distance away from her, hoping to not be touched by God’s great wrath.  They will come to realize that she is vulnerable to God’s wrath and that the earthly gain they had received from their union with her was short lived.

IV.  Warnings for Merchants of the World To Depart From Babylon 11-17a

A warning is now declared to the merchants of the world.  The merchants had benefited in worldly riches and great worldly respect from their union with Babylon.   Now, at her defeat, they are greatly sorrowing.

Many different types of merchandise were being purchased from them for Babylon’s use during worship and expansion in the lost world around them.  Therefore, many different merchants were affected by her fall.  With Babylon’s fall, came the end of the merchant’s fulfillment of their lusts for riches and fame.  This is the reason why they mourned so greatly at Babylon’s fall.

V.  Warnings for Mariners of the World To Depart From Babylon 17b-20

The mariners now receive a warning from God’s messenger.   Although they did not make direct transactions with Babylon, they took part in Mystery Babylon in a second hand way.  They sold goods to the merchants, who then sold these goods to Babylon.

They also mourned at the defeat of the religions of this world because they, too, had become enriched through her purchasing of their goods.  Once again, although they had received earthly gain, it was fleeting and placed them in a position of deserving of great spiritual ruin in their future.

God’s people are told to rejoice.  The same defeat that was dreaded by lost mankind, was a source of great joy to God’s people… they were seeing those who opposed them and profited from their abuse being judged and brought to ruin.

VI.  Millstone Cast Upon Sea… the Final Destruction Of Babylon 21-24

The divine messenger closes by showing John a symbolic representation of the greatness of Babylon’s fall.   The angel uses a great millstone sinking into a sea to symbolize the judgment of Mystery Babylon that results in their disappearance from the face of the earth.  It will bring Babylon to a complete end bringing all activity and sign of life to a halt.

All of this took place because she had deceived others and used worldly riches to entice them to join in her sinful affairs.  During which time she abused the people of God putting many of them to death.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT IN THIS SERIES?:

The contents of the sealed book will reveal what the saints have awaiting them in eternity with Christ.  The contents of the sealed book will be revealed to us in chapters 19-22.  This will bring to completion our study of the Revelation.

A very basic outline of the remaining chapters of Revelation includes:

  1. Rev 19 – What immediately precedes eternity with the Lord?
  2. Rev 20 – The opening stage of eternity with the Lord (1000 year reign – a time of judgment)
  3. Rev 21 – The subsequent stage of eternity with the Lord pictured as a great city
  4. Rev 22 – The subsequent stage of eternity with the Lord pictured as Eden restored

Satan Harms The Souls Of Men For His Personal Gain…

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “Merchandise Of The Souls Of Men”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 18:12-13
The merchandise of … souls of men.

In our text, we can see that the false religions of this world traffic in the “souls of men”. In other words, they profit from the lives of men, their passions, and their lifestyles. They profit from men as they appeal to their lustful desires and their goals.

Stop and think about it, in most cases, the false teachings of Satan’s kingdoms appeal to the carnal nature of man. Some religions say that there is no god or higher authority to which men must answer. Others, say that there is a god but all roads lead to him. There are others who will tell men they can please god through proper motives or moral works. There are those who say that all truth is relative and man has the ability to discern what is truth in any given situation.

All of these, and many others, all appeal to the carnal nature of man, causing them to believe that, in one way or another, they control their own destiny and can attain everlasting bliss of their own merit.

This is exactly what Paul was speaking of when he said that…

2Ti 4:3-4 – “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

It is “much easier on the ears” to hear a message that we control our own destiny and can find eternal happiness within ourselves, than to hear the truth about our fallen condition… We all have sinned, we are totally unable to save ourselves from our sins, our only hope is to receive the undeserved forgiveness through Divine intervention to save us from the wrath to come…

Joh 6:44 – “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (see also Roms 8:7-8, John 3:20 etc)

This Biblical message “goes against the grain” of our carnal natures, and creates in us an irritation and opposition to its acceptance. This is why the Lord warns His followers that when we proclaim the truth we can expect to face opposition and hatred apart from God’s intervention in the lives of those to which we witness…

Mat 10:21-22 – “And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”

However, we can praise His holy name knowing that when we are faithful to take out His message of truth, He will always use it in a way that is pleasing to Him. In many cases, He will intervene in the lives of lost mankind opening their ears and eyes to the truth and leading them to salvation in Christ alone…

Isa 55:11 – “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

The false religions gain, and retain their followers based on a message of deceit which appeals to their carnal natures and results in eternal condemnation and separation from Christ. In comparison, those who are genuine followers of the Lord, come to Him as a result of divine intervention based upon the truths of His Word. Through the work of Christ on the cross, and the gifts of repentance and belief, followers of Christ receive eternal security and certain eternal communion with God Himself.

Which message are we following, the truths of His Word or the error proclaimed by the false religions of the world?

Which message are we proclaiming to others, the true message of hopelessness with Christ, or the message of finding our security within ourselves?

True Love Stands Beside (Not Far Off From) Our Beloved. Are We Standing Close To Christ?

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 18:10 – “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.”

In this vision, the kings of this world are seen developing a close relationship with the religious powers of Satan.   However, when the wrath of God begins to fall against these religious powers, the kings of the world flee and stand “afar off for the fear of her torment”.  In other words, they quickly run away in fear thinking that they might escape the judgment that is falling upon their former love.

The kings’ desire to be with their “lover”, the religious powers of Satan, were based entirely on selfishness.  They wanted to be with her simply because they had much to gain from her.  The moment that their relationship put them in harms’ way, is the moment they fled in terror and wanted no more to do with her.

Sad to say, but a person’s love for Christ can be an unscriptural type of selfish love as well.  The lost Pharisees’ relationship to Christ is that type of selfish, carnal love.   Note the motivation behind all their acts of service for Him…. It was love:

  1. love for honor and praise of others (Luke 11:43)
  2. love for money and riches of the world (Luke 16:14)
  3. love being the center of attention (Matthew 6:5)

The list could go on and on…

Yes, they outwardly did works of service for Christ…. Yes, their actions were motivated by love… But, their love was a selfish, false love based upon their personal gain.

This type of love can even be the predominate type of love at work in the lives of Christians.  The perfect example of this is the Apostle Peter, a truly saved man, who followed Christ “afar off” after His arrest, trying to avoid revealing his relationship with Christ (Mark 14:54).   This same selfish type of love resulted in Peter denying his relationship to Christ in the face of possible arrest and persecution (Luke 22).

Although Peter had a true love for Christ, proven by his salvation experience, the predominate loving force in his life was one of carnal selfishness.  He was more concerned about his own personal welfare, than about his witness for Christ.   He would rather “save his own skin”, than to glorify and honor his Lord by suffering for the cause of Christ.

Folks, we have to be painfully honest with ourselves today.  What is the true motives behind our acts of service for Christ?  Are they done in His name, seeking to do His will for His glory, at no thought of personal cost or possible gain?    Or, are we serving Him to gain something specific from Him… thinking we can obligate Him to save us, wanting to impress others, to receive some type of worldly gain from our actions, maybe, hoping to live a sinless life, or attempting to cleanse ourselves from our own sins through some type of act of restitution or purification?

May we all come before our Lord, honestly, recognizing our selfish love in service to Him, asking Him to cleanse our hearts from these types of hypocritical love and fill us with a sincere, genuine, spiritual love that bears the fruits that are described in 1 Cor 13:3-8 and characterized by a self-sacrificial attitude putting Christ first above all…

1Co 13:3-8  – “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,  Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;  Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;  Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.  Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”

(23)  And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
(24)  And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

THE INTRODUCTION:

In chapter 17: we took a step back and reviewed the identity and characteristics of Satan’s kingdom.  In this text, we have the two aspects of Satan’s kingdom symbolized by the two main characters being presented to us… “the Great Whore” (the religious aspects of Satan’s kingdom) and “the Scarlet Colored Beast” (the political aspects of Satan’s kingdom).

[Please note Revelation 13: where the “Great Whore” in this passage symbolized as the “Beast from the Earth”, while the “Scarlet Beast”  is symbolized as the “Beast from the Sea”.  This description also links these to a description of Satan as the scarlet dragon with 7 heads and 10 horns in Rev 12:]

In chapter 18: we will see warnings that are given to mankind to depart from these kingdoms that are destined to fall under the hand of Almighty God.

A brief outline of chapter 18:

Chapter 18:  The Warnings To Depart From Satan’s Kingdom
18:1-3 – Announcement Of Babylon’s Fall
18:4-8 – Warning To God’s People
18:9-10 – Warning To Kings
18:11-17a – Warning To Merchants
18:17b-20 – Warning To Mariners
18:21-24 – Angel With The Millstone

The background for these warnings comes from Ezekiel 26-28

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Rev 18:11-24

(11)  And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

John’s attention is now turned to the merchants of the earth and their relationship with Mystery Babylon, the false religions of the world.  Keep in mind, all of this is being said to warn the merchants living on earth during John’s day, and forward, to not unite with Satan’s religious kingdom.

This beneficial relationship between the religious kingdom of Satan and the merchants are shown in these verses:

  1. vs 3 – Much of Mystery Babylon’s luxury was created through the purchase of the goods of merchants.
  2. vs 11 – The merchants received monetary gain from these religions.
  3. vs 15 – The merchants were made rich by her.
  4. vs 23 – The merchants were greatly respected due to their wealth given to them through Mystery Babylon

Many to the false religions fill their buildings and the pockets of their leaders with great riches producing a great marketplace for merchants.  Also, many times, merchants who are members of a false religion will be favored by other members of their religion.

The loss of all these business opportunities is the cause of their great grief.  It is a selfish mourning due to the great loss of wealth and social standing now that Mystery Babylon is defeated.  They are said to “weep” showing an outward display of sorrow, while also mourning feeling a great inward sorrow at their losses.

Please note: the fall of Mystery Babylon is pictured by the fall of Tyre in the OT prophets (Ezek 27:26-36).  In these verses, the fall of Tyre results in great economic loss for the merchants of the earth.

(12)  The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,  (13)  And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.

All the merchandise of the merchants that is listed in these verses are used by false religions in the performance of their ceremonies…

Role In Worship Merchandise of Merchants Verse
Idols, Chalices, Building Decorations Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Pearls 12
Clothing, Building Decorations Fine Linen, Purple (Material Dyed Purple), Silk, Scarlet (Material Dyed Scarlet) 12
Furnishings, Idols, Utensils, Candle Sticks Thyine Wood, Ivory, Precious Wood, Marble, Brass, Iron 12
Incense, Potions Cinnamon, Odours, Ointments, Frankincense 13
Ordinances,  Celebrations Wine, Oil, Fine Flour, Wheat 13
Sacrifices,  Manual Labor, Ceremonies Beasts, Sheep, Horses, Chariots, Slaves 13
Worshippers, Contributions, Spiritual Servitude Souls of Men (Trading men’s spiritual welfare for worldly riches) 13

Folks, we can see EVERY area of merchandise sold by these merchants can play a role in the false religion’s worship and their continuance.  Based upon the individual needs and desires of each false religion, the merchants would profit through the selling of their goods to these religions and the members of these religions.

(14)  And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

The fruits (merchandise) of the merchants was lusted after by Mystery Babylon.  At her defeat, Mystery Babylon will have these fruits taken from her.  All that she desired will be lost, never to be regained.  This is describing the great scope and permanence of her fall as the Lord brings her to an end at His second coming.

(15)  The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,  (16)  And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!  (17)  For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.

The merchants will separate themselves (much like the kings – vs 10) fearful that they will be judged along with her.  Their fear of judgment is also causing them to “weep” (crying in sorrow) and “wail” (crying in pain).     They both feel sorrow due to their loss and they are pained due to their fear of coming judgment falling upon them.

These merchants cry out “Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.”

“alas, alas” – they give an emphasized, outward, sound of grief

“that great city… precious stones and pearls” – they remember her times of greatness (and their great transactions with her)

“For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” – they realize the Lord’s greatness as He quickly brought her greatness to rubble.

And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

John’s attention now turns to a warning given to the mariners who supplies these goods to the merchants.  John now sees them standing in separation from Mystery Babylon as well.   Although most, but not all of their profiting came indirectly from Mystery Babylon, by way of the merchant’s sales, they still understood that they were in great danger of being judged for their uniting with Mystery Babylon.

This is a very important point that we should not miss.  They understood that not only those who were directly connected to Mystery Babylon would be judged, but also those who were indirectly related to them.  For many of the mariners, they did no business with Mystery Babylon, they simply sold their goods to the merchants who then entered into financial transactions with Mystery Babylon.

Why are these mariners in jeopardy of judgment also?  Perhaps, the solution to this question should be sought based upon this principle…

We must take into account not simply our personal relationships with others, but also what types of relationships they form with third parties.  By doing this, we learn much about the character and lifestyles of our relationship candidates.   These mariners knew that the merchants were selfishly, greedily, selling the goods they supplied to Mystery Babylon.  Therefore, by extension, they were guilty of forming alliances with those who are known to be corrupt and, based upon their knowledge of the merchant’s activities, were guilty of dealing with Mystery Babylon as well.

(18)  And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!

They were amazed at seeing her great fall… she had been so great and had come to such a total ruin.

(19)  And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

Again, we see signs of selfish mourning… “cast dust on their heads” (done during times of mourning and remorse) and  “weeping and wailing” (outward displays of sorrow and pain).

Again, just like the merchants, they have in mind the great financial loss that they will bear and the great fear at seeing her sudden total defeat at the hands of Almighty God.

(20)  Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

God’s people who are in heaven, both OT saints (“prophets”) and NT saints (“apostles”), eagerly awaiting His second coming, are being addressed.   They are told to “rejoice” at Mystery Babylon’s defeat.  Why rejoice?

Because God hath found her guilty of sins and punished (“avenged”) her.  All of her sins against the people of God are now being punished.  He is keeping His word to avenge His saints.

(21)  And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Following the warnings given to the different groups of mankind to separate themselves from the religious aspect of Satan’s kingdom, we now see the overthrow and total defeat of the false religions of the world illustrated.   John sees a “mighty angel”, perhaps the same angel described as “another angel) in 18:1.

To illustrate Babylon’s great defeat, this angel takes a huge stone, (much like a grinding wheel) and through it into the sea.  As it sinks to the bottom of the sea, no proof of its prior existence can be seen… this pictures the complete, total destruction of Mystery Babylon which leaves no evidence of its previous power, wealth or presence.

See Jeremiah 51:63-64

(22)  And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;  (23)  And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee:

The destruction of the religious kingdom of Satan is symbolized by a city which becomes deserted due to a great catastrophe:

Verse Desertion In Text Effects of the Desertion

22 the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; No longer will songs of worship be sung or played on instruments
22 no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee No longer will buildings, idols, or utensils of sacrifice be made.
22 the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; No longer will food be prepared for celebratory feasts, and worship observances
23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; No night-time activities, no candle-lit  ceremonies
23 The voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: No more marriages, or joyful, celebrations

This symbolism paints the picture of total, complete destruction of Mystery Babylon.  See Jeremiah 25:10

Why did such devastation take place?

for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.  (24)  And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Three basic reasons are given:

  1. for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; – She enriched and empowered others through her sinful deeds
  2. for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. – She deceived all lost mankind through her potions, enchantments, false doctrines and rituals
  3. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. – She opposed God’s people, abusing and martyring them.

The Lord, justly, rewarded Mystery Babylon with absolute destruction and total cessation of her activities due to the great evil and harm that her actions brought about.  This is an act of a just Lord who will give back what is deserved to those who oppose His people and commit great atrocities to mankind.

CHRIST REVEALED:

Once again, we see Christ as the One who is Holy, Just and Almighty One that will punish the Kingdoms of Satan with a perfect, complete judgment.    How wonderful it is to see Christ as the perfectly Sovereign, All-powerful One that will someday bring utter defeat to Satan and his kingdoms!

1Jn 3:8 – “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

Here, we see the inevitable, total, destruction wrought during the wrath of Christ against the kingdoms of Satan.  Keep in mind, the longsuffering of Christ has led Him to give all who are in Satan’s kingdom more than an ample opportunity to depart from Mystery Babylon and turn to Him in saving faith.   However, when the time of His judgment comes to pass, there will be no mercy shown to those who have chosen to be a part of Satan’s kingdoms.

There is a time for repentance and there is coming a time of wrath and punishment against sin.  There is a time for God’s mercy and grace to take the forefront in God’s dealings with mankind on earth and there is coming a time when God’s holiness and justice will be placed on display.

May we all be ready for the day of justice and holiness by turning to Christ in saving faith while His mercy is still being shown to lost mankind.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 18:8

“Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

In our text, the Lord’s judgment of the religious kingdom of Satan at His second coming is in view.  Whenever a person talks about the Lord’s judgment of sin, there is always a question as to why He does this.  For many, the idea of a loving God flies in the face of a God that judges sin and they struggle at understanding why His judgment takes place.   When we come to a Biblical understanding of why sin is judged, it helps us to understand how a loving God can judge the sinner and those who have rejected Him.

In our text we are told that the Lord who is seen judging the kingdoms of Satan is a “strong” Lord.  In other words, God’s judgment of sin reveals His strength. This is one of example of how we can learn much about the personality and character of God through His displays of wrath.   The revelation of Himself is one of the reasons why He displays His wrath against sinful mankind.

God judges the sin of others to reveal these five attributes that only He possesses:

  1. His perfect strength – When we see His judgment over the powers of this world, bringing the mighty to their knees we can see His great ability to dominate all those who oppose Him.

Psa 62:11 – “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.”

2  His perfect holiness – God’s judgment against sin clearly reveals His holiness and His hatred of sin and its results.  God hates sin because sin separates us from Him and brings lasting harm upon us.

Psa 5:4 – “For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.”

  1. His perfect justice – God’s judgment reveals His justice. Every sin must be punished, either those who commit sin will face His hand of judgment or else Christ has faced His judgment on the cross. In either case, sin was judged … no wrongdoing can go unpunished.

Jos 24:19 – “And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.”

  1. His perfect faithfulness – As a faithful God, He keeps His promises perfectly. One of those promises is that He will judge sin.

Isa 61:8 – “For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.”

  1. His perfect love, grace and mercy. – When we see the judgment of God falling upon lost mankind, we come to a better understanding of what we deserve and what He has graciously withheld from us. Without His wrath falling upon lost mankind, we could NEVER really come to a full understanding of His wrath and from what He has saved us.

The greatest example of this is found at the foot of His cross… on the cross we see come to understand the horrible nature of God’s judgment of sin fall upon Christ, who was punished on our behalf based upon God’s love for us….

1Pe 3:18 – “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”

Joh 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Eph 5:2 – “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”

Without God’s displays of wrath, we could never come to understand the greatness of His love and grace towards His people.

May we all see the greatness of our Lord in the many displays of His wrath that we can find in the Bible, events in the world around us, and especially in the events that are yet to come.

But especially, may we always be reminded of His great works on our behalf and His great love that He has shown to us by delivering us from His wrath through the giving of His Son, Jesus to die on the cross on our behalf.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “her sins have reached unto heaven,”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 18:5  – “For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.”

Here, in the context of our passage, we find that the sins of Satan’s religious kingdom has “reached unto heaven” ie… God is aware of them and will take action in His time.  Of course, we see God’s judgement for these sins being meted out during His second coming.

Many times, those who are lost think that they can hide their sins from Almighty God….

Isa 29:15 – “Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?”

In spite of all their attempts, their sins ALWAYS enter into the presence of our all-knowing God and in every case, they will be given according to their ways and doings.

Jer 32:19 – “Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:”

Folks, as fallen mankind, may we never fool ourselves into thinking that our sins will not reach heaven, nor the Lord remember our iniquities.   Apart from accepting Christ as our Lord and Savior, sinful, fallen, mankind CANNOT enter into the presence of a Holy God….

Act 4:10-12 – “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole…. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

May we all understand our dangerous position before the Lord and come before Him humbly, turning from our sins, and turning our lives over to His control as our Lord.  May we look to Christ, trusting in Him to be our sinless substitute, taking the penalty of our sins upon Himself thereby securing our eternal salvation….

Heb 7:25-27 – “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.   For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 18:4

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

The call for God’s people to be separated from the wicked works of Satan’s kingdoms is found throughout the Bible. The most clear, and familiar, passage on this subject is found in 2Co 6:14-17…

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?   And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?   And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.   Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”

Because we have God Himself (in the person of the Holy Spirit) dwelling within us we are to separate ourselves from unbelievers who would lead us into sinful lifestyles.   Folks, this applies not only to our choice of spouse, but also our choice of business associates, close friends, and anyone else who may be influential in our lives.

For some, the commands to “come out from among them, and be ye separate” and “touch not the unclean thing” when compared to the command to be “the lights of the world” (Matt 5:14) seem to contradict.  For Christians to be lights of the world, they must be in contact with the lost around them, setting the proper example through our actions, speech and personal testimonies of the Lord’s workings in our lives.  How can we be witnesses to the lost, if we are to be separated from them?

The key is a proper understanding of what “separated” means.   In our text, the Christian’s separation from the lost is described as abstaining from being “yoked” to the lost.  A yoke is a type of harness placed upon horses or oxen that join them together so that they might work in harmony as they perform different labors.   When applied to the saved and lost, it is implying that they are being joined together in a unity of motive, desires and actions.   When Christians are yoked to the lost in home, business, or leisure activities, there are bound to be conflicts and a huge temptation to compromise one’s stand for Christ.   This is why we are commanded to not be “unequally yoked” and yet still remain lights in a sin-darkened world.

What an awesome responsibility has been placed on the people of God.  We are to be among the lost and yet not to be one of them.  We are to share the precious gospel message, and show our love for them, without forming bonds with them that will cause us to partake of their sinful ways.

May we all take great care in our relationships with those that are lost, showing them our love and yet refraining from making relationships that will hinder our growth in the Lord.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the earth was lightened with his glory”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 18:1

“And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.”

In our text, we see a character introduced that is described as “another angel”, whose origin is “heaven”.  He is said to possess “great power” and enlightened the earth with “his glory”.  This angel makes a clear public announcement that Babylon (the false religions of this world) have been brought to utter defeat at the hands of Christ.

Because this message is symbolically proclaimed by an angel that comes from heaven, we can be assured that his message comes from God Himself.  What a wonderful truth…. God, Himself, has proclaimed that Babylon is defeated and Christ has won the ultimate victory on His behalf.

Speaking of this angel, we are also told that “the earth was lightened with his glory”.  This phrase is taken directly from Ezekiel 43:2 (see also Nums 14:21, Psalms 72:19, Isa 6:3 etc) and is spoken of in relation to the Lord Himself…

“And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.”

Stop and think about what this must be like to see the wondrous glory of God shine, throughout the world!  Ezekiel saw this in his vision as Christ was returning to the earth to dwell with, and be worshipped by, His spiritual nation (the Israel of God, all who are saved).  This is symbolized by His glory entering the temple permanently (Ezekiel 43:1-9).

The Ezekiel’s description of Christ’s great glory on display at His second coming is being attributed to this angel, as he delivers the announcement of Christ’s final victory over the powers of darkness, which also takes place at His second coming.

Why is this?  Why would the glory of Christ be attributed to the angel in John’s vision. It could be that Christ’s awesome glory was revealed to all men, as His great victory over the lost was announced.  In other words, through his message this angel was revealing Christ’s glory to the world.

Or, it is possible that this angel is symbolic of Christ Himself, the Victor, announcing His victory over the powers of darkness. The three-fold description of this angel could easily apply to Christ Himself…

  1. come down from heaven – Christ was of heaven and came to earth to gain victory over the lost at His first, and second comings.
  2. having great power – Christ, as God Himself, possessed all authority over the powers of darkness allowing Him to gain the victory over them.
  3. the earth was lightened with his glory. – Throughout the Old Testament EVERY time glory is so great it is spread throughout the world, it is speaking of God’s, or Christ’s, glory.

In either case, the basic teaching is that Christ has defeated the powers of darkness and God Himself has affirmed this to us all. There should be no doubt or reservation of this truth on our behalf.

May we all give Christ the glory and honor He deserves as the Victor over spiritual Babylon.  Whether at His first coming (Col 2:14-15), or His second coming (Rev 19:11-21) His glory was clearly revealed as He won the victory over Satan, his political powers, and his religious powers.

May we all serve Him with confidence knowing He has won the final victory over Satan and His kingdom.  May we seek to declare His greatness and His victory over sin and death to all that all around us with confidence, knowing our message is true and the only hope for lost mankind.

Revelation 18:1-10 “Warnings To Depart From Babylon (1)”

SIH STSTA ICONTHE TEXT:

Rev 18:1-10

(1)  And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
(2)  And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
(3)  For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
(4)  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
(5)  For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
(6)  Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
(7)  How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
(8)  Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
(9)  And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
(10)  Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Rev 18:1-10

(1)  And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.   (2)  And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying,

Perhaps this is the same angel that we saw in 5:2 and 18:21.  In both of these texts we find an angel that makes very important announcements, and it is said to be done with “a strong voice”.

He is described as:

  1. come down from heaven – he is working on behalf of God Himself, proclaiming the Lord’s great victory
  2. having great power (authority) – he possessed the very authority from God to make this important announcement
  3. the earth was lightened with his glory – being God’s representative, his message and work is to be honored. His announcement brought the words of God into the world resulting in the enlightenment of this world.

(Either this angel is symbolically teaching us this message of victory comes from God Himself, or perhaps, this angel is symbolic of Christ Jesus declaring His victory over the powers of darkness.  Please note all three descriptive phrases concerning this angel could easily be referring to Christ (Ezek 43:2).  In any case, the most important point is that the message being delivered has a divine sinless origin that is the complete absolute truth.)

The angel now forcefully screams out with a large, loud voice, commanding everyone’s attention…

Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

In this text, the beast from the earth, the false religions of this world are described as “Babylon” which means “confusion” or “the seat of confusion”.  This is because, joining with the beast from the sea (the political kingdoms of this world) they wreak havoc through the attempted confusion to all mankind.

Just as Satan confused Eve in the garden, so too, Satan’s kingdoms seek to confuse all mankind.

The mighty Babylon (the seat of confusion) has been brought down.  It has become desolate of anything good and profitable for mankind.  She has fallen to the wrath of God and her teachings and works have been made desolate and vain.

It is now become:

  1. “the habitation of devils” – the dwelling place of demons and the powers of darkness
  2. “the hold of every foul spirit” – the burrow of every dirty, sinful spirit
  3. “a cage of every unclean and hateful bird” – the prison holding every impure and opposing bird (Note in Matt 13:4 – birds are symbols of powers of darkness.)

Babylon’s defeat pictured as desolation (Isa 13:19-22, 34:11; Jer 50:39)

Why did God’s wrath fall against Babylon bringing her to defeat?

(3)  For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

“Fornication” comes from the Greek word for “uncleanness”.  In the Bible, it is used to describe a variety of sinful actions and desires.  Here, we can see that the sinful union between the false religions and the nations of the world are placed into view.

The religious powers have deceived lost mankind and lost mankind has willingly joined with them to further their cause.    They are described as:

  1. “becoming drunken” – no self-control, no shame, destructive
  2. “committed fornication”- union that is sinful by nature, against the will and purposes of the Lord
  3. “waxed rich” – prosperous, successful, wealthy

Based upon Babylon’s defeat, sinful nature, and unclean fruits, the Lord now graciously gives warning to any who might be misled to join up with her.  There will be a total of 4 warnings given to four different groups:

18:4-8 – Warning To God’s People;        18:9-10 – Warning To Kings;      18:11-17a – Warning To Merchants;

18:17b-20 – Warning To Mariners

(Note that much of the content of these warnings come from Ezek 26-28.)

(4)  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.  (5)  For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

Warning to God’s people…

Please notice “MY people” implies God is speaking.  He commands for them to “come out of her”, in other words… separate yourselves from her.  In doing so, they will avoid having part in her sins and then, not receiving her punishments.   God knows her sins and will not forget her acts of disobedience.

This message of separation from the sinful people and groups in the world is taught throughout the Bible.  In the Old Testament, it was symbolized by the Jews separating themselves from the idolatrous Gentile nations around her.  In the New Testament, we find many instructions to Christians to remain separated and live lives of holiness for Christ…

2Co 6:14-18 – “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?   And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?   And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,  And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.“

1Pe 2:9 – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

(6)  Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

Since God knows her sinful deeds and motives, He is capable of giving back in return her deeds upon her head.  In 17:4 we saw her deeds were described as “abominations” and “fornications”.

These two-fold sins, will deserve a two-fold judgment…

Jer 16:18 – “And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.”

Keep in mind that “to fill her double” refers to bringing to total defeat, destruction…

Jer 17:18 – “Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.”

(7)  How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

The sins of the false religions of the world include a glorification of herself and abuse of her followers.  She does both of these to receive the fulfillment of her sinful desires and sinful pleasures. She is prideful, thinks she is above judgment, and lacks of concern for her future welfare and the welfare of her followers.

Because of her sinful acts, attitudes and motivations, the Lord promises to place upon her torment (rubs her against touchstone) and sorrow (mourning).   In other words, the Lord will rub her raw and cause her to mourn greatly for all the harm she has done.  This takes place at her defeat at the Battle of Armageddon (Rev 19:11-20a) and throughout eternity in the Lake of Fire (Rev 19:20b-21).

(8)  Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

Her sins bring upon her sudden judgment (in one day) with no remedy.  Her judgments will bring upon her:

  1. “death” – separation from riches, power, destruction,
  2. “mourning” – sorrow due to her great loss of all she possesses
  3. “famine” – great hunger to regain that which was lost
  4. “utterly burned with fire” – God’s judgment at Armageddon and throughout eternity in Lake of Fire.

Her desolation and destruction will be complete and never remedied.

The Lord, by His grace, wants to stop these judgments from falling upon His people, that is why He has so graciously given them a warning to remain separated from her seductive influences in this world.

Note there is a similar picture given to us in the account of Sodom and Gomorrah:

Vs 4 – Saints removed – Gen 19:15-17
Vs 5-6 – Judgment falling based upon their sinful works – Gen 18:20-21
Vs 7 – Self-Righteous, Self-Reliance – Gen 19:4-11
Vs 8 – Judgment By Fire – Gen 19:23-28

(9)  And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,  (10)  Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

Warning  to the kings of the earth..

The Lord now warns the political authority holders of the world to stay away from her influences.  When joining with her they are said to be committing uncleanness (fornication) and living in luxury (deliciously) .    When she is judged, these political powers will cry out in sorrow and loss knowing that their sinful pleasures and indulgences will now come to an end and she is now answering to God for her sins.

It will be at that time that they will then hypocritically separate themselves from her in fear that they will receive the judgment that she is currently experiencing.    Stop and think about this.  As long as they received fulfillment of their fleshly desires and goals they stayed in a close relationship with her, but once they could no longer gain form their relationship with her, they selfishly deserted her.

CHRIST REVEALED:

Christ is revealed in this passage as the patient, merciful Lord that warns mankind of the powers of wickedness and the horrible eternal consequences of joining with them.  Think about it.  The Lord could easily step back and allow mankind to continue choosing to follow the powers that will lead to their ultimate destruction.  But He does not.  Instead, He mercifully gives all men a clear warning of the dangers of joining with these sinful world powers.

Truly our Lord is a longsuffering Lord who gives mankind ample warnings and opportunities to avoid His wrath that is to come.

Psa 86:15-16 – “But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.   O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.”

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

May we all take the patient mercy of the Lord very seriously and not abuse His longsuffering towards us.  Although He patiently waits for men to come to Him, He will not always withhold His wrath…

Nah 1:3 – “The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.”

May we all very quickly take advantage of the Lord’s invitation to come to Him in repentance and faith, knowing that He is waiting to receive any that will come to Him in Godly sorrow, repentance and faith…

Joe 2:12-14 – “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:   And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.   Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 17:14 – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Christ’s people who join with Him at the Battle of Armageddon (Rev 19:11-16) are described as the “called, chosen and faithful”.  In these three titles we find a wonderful description of those who have been saved by His grace through the work of our Lord Jesus.

They are:

“the called” –
We are called to salvation through the gospel message and the Spirit’s intervention. (Romans 10:13-15, John 6:44)
We are called to follow Christ as the servants of Almighty God. (1 Peter 2:21)

“the chosen” –
We are chosen to salvation before the foundation of the world (James 2:5)
We were chosen to be holy and live lives of service to Him (1 Peter 2:9, Eph 2:10)

“the faithful” –
The result of our call to salvation and service, the saints of God live lives faithful to Him. Faithful service is proof of a genuine salvation experience. If no change of lifestyle takes place following a “salvation experience” there is no reason to believe it was a genuine work of God in the heart.  (James 2:17-18, 2 Corinth 5:17)

This is why all Christians are called upon to make sure the Lord has worked in their hearts and changed their life! (Please note they are not told to be certain they have made “a decision” for Christ…. they are told to be certain God has chosen them and called them to salvation and service!)  (2 Peter 1:10)

Folks, the Lord has graciously chosen to save us before the foundation of the world and called us to faithful service in His name, by His grace!

Eph 1:3-6 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:   having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

May we all love and appreciate our Lord for graciously choosing to save us when we did not deserve, nor could we earn, salvation from our sins.  In doing so, may we also come to understand that we are saved to serve our wonderful Lord out of a heart of appreciation and love knowing we owe Him our very lives…

Rom 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.   And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
