And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
The street of this symbolic New Jerusalem is said to be made of “pure gold, as it were transparent glass”. There is no earthly gold that can be purified to the point of becoming as clear as transparent glass, however, symbolically, this holds for us some great truths…
- The one “street” found in this glorious city pictures for us the way that leads to eternal communion with Christ. in other words, this street is the way to salvation, forgiveness and eternal life.
There is only ONE way to eternal life (the gospel message), and that way leads to Christ. That is why this city is said to have only one street in it.
- This street is said to be of ‘pure gold”. The gospel message is a divine message which is precious. It originates with God and leads us to Him. This is why it is said to be of gold.
The gospel message is free from deceit, error or sin. This is why it is described as being pure.
- The purity of this street’s gold is emphasized as “it were transparent glass.” It is said to be without any dirt or contamination, it is like glass that is absolutely clear. It has no dirt, chips, cracks, waves or any other defect which would obstruct our view of Christ and His work.
Folks, when we see others who do not see the value of the gospel, when they misunderstand its intent, or ridicule its priceless message, it is not the fault of the gospel. The reason why the gospel is misunderstood and rejected by men is because of man’s sinfulness and spiritual blindness.
The gospel does nothing to hinder our view of Christ and His work on our behalf, however, man’s sin hardened heart rejects the truth and mocks Christ and all He has done on behalf of His people.
Folks, we need to always remember that, apart from the Lord’s gracious intervention, sharing the gospel with the lost is much like ‘talking to a brick wall”. Without Christ’s working, one hundred percent of the time, the gospel message will be rejected by the lost.
So as we minster to them don’t’ be surprised if they reject our message and misinterpret our motives. They are blinded by sin and truly unable to see the truth….
John 5:39-40 KJV – “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”
However, through Christ’s intervention in the life of a lost person, the spiritually blind can receive sight, and those who were running from Christ can be drawn to Him…
John 6:44-45 KJV – “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.”
So, as Christians, who love the lost and seek to see them saved, what are we to do? Share the gospel message with them and PRAY FOR THEM… before, during, and after our witness to them. We should never rely upon our own abilities to bring them to Christ, because we all have NO ABILITY to bring them to our Savior. The only One who can bring the lost to Christ is the Lord Himself, as He intervenes in their lives through His ministry as the Holy Spirit.
He alone can bring them to salvation…. this is why we are to look to Him in faith, seek His face through prayer, and give Him all the praise and honor when we see a lost person come to faith.
It is truly a miracle of God when He softens the sin hardened heart of lost mankind and opens their eyes to the need of salvation and the wondrous work He has done on their behalf.
