“The Man Of Sin”

SIH STSTA ICONOne of the most interesting, and controversial, of all the prophetic scriptures is Paul’s teaching on “the man of sin”. This title is used only once in the entire Bible and is presented by Paul as a topic of utmost importance to all Christians.

May we all approach this subject with a heart submitted to the Lord and the revealed truths of His Word. May we seek to shun all the interpretations and sensationalistic teaching on this subject that has been presented to us by the worldly religious kingdoms of this world.

THE SCRIPTURES:

1) Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and [by] our gathering together unto him,
2) That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3) Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5) Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6) And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7) For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way.
8) And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9) [Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
(2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)

1 John 2:18-24
(18) Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
(19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
(20) But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
(21) I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
(22) Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
(23) Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
(24) Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

1 John 4:2-4
(2) Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
(3) And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
(4) Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

2 John 1:6-8
(6) And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
(7) For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
(8) Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

11) And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12) And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13) And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14) And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15) And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16) And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17) And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18) Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.
(Revelation 13:11-18)

THE STUDY:

(2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)

1) Now we beseech you, brethren,

Paul is coming before the people humbly, asking them to take his message very seriously, and then carefully apply it, due to its importance.

by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and [by] our gathering together unto him,

The word “by” comes from a Greek word meaning “concerning” or “referring to”. What was this important message going to be referring to? I would be addressing the second coming of Jesus Christ and our gathering together to be with Him for an eternity.

2) That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Why was Paul delivering this message to them? He wanted to give them assurance, Christ was coming again to take His people to be with Him for an eternity. Paul did not want the believers to be shaken in mind or spirit, or weakened in their faith about His coming.

Paul main concern was them be shaken in their faith by a false teacher claiming to have a vision (“by spirit”), a false teacher delivering an ungodly message (“by word”), or a misunderstanding of one of Paul’s letters (“by a letter from us”). Paul wanted them to rest assured “the day of Christ is at hand”.

3) Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed,

They were not to allow ANYONE mislead them to believe Christ is not coming again. As a matter of fact, they should expect to hear these false teachings, they WILL take place prior to His coming.

Christ will not come again until this apostasy take place. This apostasy will be fueled by the doctrine of false teachers who are actively opposing the truths of Christ. But the Christians were to not lose faith, at the second coming of Christ, those who teach these errors will be uncovered and shown clearly to be the enemy of Christ and receive His wrath upon them.

Falling from the truths of God takes place in every age and every place. They are like “birthpains” that increase in intensity and frequency, as time progresses (Matthew 24:5). In other words, these things will increase as we get closer to the return of Christ.

When the falling away from the truths of the Lord becomes evident, the man of sin that is leading them is revealed to the world. This takes place now, and at the massive falling away that takes place close to Christ’s coming. When Christians see others fall from the truth due to the influence of a false teacher, the Christian then recognizes that teacher as one that opposes Christ and is to be avoided.

“By their fruits ye shall know them”… if the fruits of a person’s ministry is rebellion against the truths of God (leading others to depart from the faith), the Christian can make a clear judgment that this man is a false teacher, one that holds the title “the man of sin”.

Note on the title: “Man of Sin”…
This title does not have to speak of an individual man, but can also be referring to many men who share the same characteristics or position.

For example, in the sentence “the President of the United States is a powerful man”. The title President of the United States can refer to our current president, or it can be referring to the office of President and anyone how has previously held that office. Another example of this is found in the sentence “the elephant is a big animal”. This sentence tells us any animal that is called an elephant is a big animal. Is is not just referring to one specific elephant.

A Biblical example of this same principle is the usage of the singular word “church” in Matthew 16:18 – “Upon this rock I will build my church…”. Although it is singular in number, the word “church” is referring to any assembly that can be classified as a church of the Lord. This verse is stating that any true “church” is built upon the “rock” (the truth of Jesus Christ). There are many churches that are built upon the truths of Christ… the singular word “church” includes each and every one of them.

The title “Man of Sin” is being used in exactly the same way to refer to all the false teachers of the world. They are given this title to describe the sinfulness of their ministries as they actively teach error in direct opposition to Christ and the true teachings, His Word. Paul is emphasizing to the believers the sinfulness of the false teachers and need to refrain from any part of their ministries.

As we continue with the Man of Sin’s description we will clearly see this identity of the man of sin being brought out more clearly….

the son of perdition; 4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The man of sin is now described as:

1. “the son of perdition” – “the son of ruin or destruction”.

Those who lead men away from Christ rightfully hold this title for at least three reasons:
a. They cause ruin and destruction to come upon the lives of others
b. They are to be viewed by Christians as destructive as rightfully ignored.
c. They are headed for eternal judgment (ruin and destruction) as they face the wrath of Almighty God.

Please note only one other place in the Bible do we read of the son of perdition…

John 17:12 – refers to Judas Iscariot as “the son of perdition”. Within his life we find a clear display of the characteristics of a son of perdition…
a. He attempted to bring great harm to the Lord and His cause.
b. The intended consequences of his actions would be to condemn a world to die in their sins, by killing the One sent to save them.
c. Due to His exceeding wickedness, his life was cut short and he now faces a special place of eternal wrath (Acts 1:25).

2. “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped

False teachers, as they teach errors that oppose God’s word and leads men astray, are placing themselves in opposition to Christ and His ministry.

Although they may not verbally claim that are higher than God…. their teachings imply this. Through their false teachings (as they consistently oppose, deny and correct the Word), they are saying, “I have the truth, Christ is lying to you”, “I have more knowledge, understanding and wisdom than God”, “I know better than Jesus”.

This is clearly exalting themselves above the true God and any other false God whose teachings oppose theirs. With their voice they may say…. “I am a follower of Christ and a worshipper of Jehovah, the true God”, yet found in the content of their teachings a clear denial of Jesus as their Lord and Jehovah as their God.

3. “so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”

False teachers whose teachings oppose the truths of God’s Word are clearly setting Himself up as the true all-knowing God. Through their ministry, as they declare their false teachings publically, they are taking the place of God, usurping His authority and taking His place as the Giver of truth. They may not claim to be God, although many do, but their actions and teachings clearly “shew” themselves to be God.

It is important to note the word translated “temple” (naos) and its usage in the NT scriptures. This word comes from the Greek word for “dwell” and is speaking of “a dwelling place”. It is translated by the words “temple” and “shrine”.

It is used to speak of:
1. the Jewish temple – (Matt 23:35, etc)
2. shrines built for the worship of idols (Acts 19:24)
3. the body of the saints – (1 Cor 3:16-17 etc)
4. the local church – (Eph 2:19-21)
5. the physical body of Christ – (John 2:21)

From these examples, it is important for us to realize that the term “temple” does not have to be limited to the Jewish place of worship. As a matter of fact, nowhere in Paul’s writings do we see him use this word to describe the Jewish place of worship. His writings limit the usage of “temple” to the body of the saints and the local assembly.

So when we read that the “man of sin”, the false teacher, is “he as God sitteth in the temple of God”.

Paul is telling us that this false teacher can be found teaching in the midst of the “temple”:
1. amidst the saints (in LOCAL CHURCHES where the worship of Jehovah can be corrupted by error)
2. amidst of the lost (in SHRINES reserved for the worship place of idols where false Gods are worshipped)
3. amidst the Jews (in the JEWISH TEMPLE where a denial of Jesus as the Messiah is clearly proclaimed).

In other words, false teachers, men of sin, can be found in any place where men gather to worship the true God and the gods of men.

5) Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

Paul had previously warned them about false teachers and, apparently, had felt the need to repeat this solemn warning to them.

6) And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

Paul now reminds those in the church at Thessalonica that the Lord is in control. There is no need to lose hope, nor question the existence of false teachers.

The Lord’s sovereign power actively withholds each individual false teacher from teaching error, until the time is right for the false teacher to be revealed to all. It is only then that the false teacher is allowed to minister, gain a following, bear fruits in opposition to Christ and be recognized by all Christians as a false teacher.

Christians should always use this truth to encourage their hearts. Every false minister is under God’s control and only allowed to minister as the Lord allows.

7) For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way.

The same spirit is at work in all the hearts of the false teachers. It is Satan and those under his control (demons) that are at work within the false teacher’s life.

This Satan and his work is described as the “Mystery of Iniquity”. This is because Satan’s workings are done secretly in the life of the false teacher. He empowers the false teachers secretly, the lost world does not recognize that the false teachers have Satanic enabling and authority. Lost men look at false teachers, readily accept them, and eagerly follow them.

These dark forces “doth already work”… they have been at work in the lives of false teachers from the beginning of time until Christ’s coming (Satan in Eden – Second coming).

The Lord will continue to “hold down” this demonic work of Satan in the lives of false teachers until Satan is taken out of the way at the second coming of Christ. It will be at this time that Satan will be defeated and the false religions and heretical teachers will be brought to an end.

Paul is explaining to the church at Thessalonica that the Lord will always restrain false teaching until He comes again. No matter what victories the false teachers seem to gain, no matter how many are led astray, the Lord is allowing it for a reason and will continue to control it until He comes again.

Paul now turns our attention to that great day when Satan is defeated, and those who teach error are brought into great defeat.

10) And then shall that Wicked be revealed,

At the second coming, the false teachers who have led others away from the truths of Christ (“that
Wicked”), will be seen for what they are… those who oppose Christ and misled all mankind and deserving of divine wrath.

whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

The defeat of the wicked will involve the Lord calling down His wrath upon him (pictured by the sharp two-edged sword in Revelation 19). This will take place at the second coming of Christ. The greatness and glory of the Lord will destroy the false religions of the world.

9) [Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

“That wicked” the false teachers and religions of the world, are now described as

1. “whose coming is after the working of Satan” – The Mystery of Iniquity, Satan working in their heart
2. “with all power” – Their tools are Satanic abilities and talents.
3. “and signs” – the ability to perform great signs seeming to indicate divine origins.
4. “and lying wonders” – the ability to work miracles that lead men astray
5. “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish” – They are very misleading, they have many sinful acts and teachings that are effective in the lives of those that are headed for eternal ruin. These remain in their lost state, being misled, because they have never received the love of the truths of God.

11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
The false teachers, that possessed a mental recognition of the truths of God, have willfully chosen to mislead the lost and benefit from their eternal destruction. These same false teachers have become deceived like their followers. This is because God has placed upon them overpowering errors that ensured their continued spiritual blindness, and caused them to believe the same lies they have propagated among the lost. These same false teachers approved and encouraged sinfulness to take place.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 – “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;…”

It is these that were turned over to their spiritual blindness to ensure their divine punishment. The Lord did this to ensure that those false teachers would face the same divine wrath as those they misled.

These are the same type of individuals described in Romans 1:20-32, only in their case, they spread their errors and attempt to selfishly profit from them…

(20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (21) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

(22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, (23) And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

(24) Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (25) Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

(26) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: (27) And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

(28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (29) Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, (30) Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, (31) Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: (32) Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Other Biblical texts that speak of this “man of sin” include the following texts. Please notice in every text, this man of sin is not described as one individual, but is described as applying to many individuals who have existed throughout time…

Revelation 13:11-18

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

May we all come to understand the destructive nature of the Satanic tool of false teaching. Not only does false teacher harm those who are misled by the teachers, but it also brings far greater judgment upon those who declare these errors to mankind.

May we all make certain that the teachings we accept only come from God’s Word. We do this by making sure any teaching we hear aligns itself with the Word of God.

Acts 17:11 – “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

And then, for those of us who teach God’s Word, may we NEVER, NEVER, present any teaching that we cannot prove is true using God’s Word. That leaves no room for speculation, addition or subtraction from any truth found in God’s Word.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 – “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:18 KJV

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

The mark of the beast consists of the number 666 and is described as the number of a man.  These two descriptions are simply teaching us the same truth in two differing ways.  This is because the number 666 is the number that represents mankind:

  1. Man was made on the sixth day
  2. Man falls short of perfection (7 is the number of perfection)
  3. Man was consigned to 6 days of labor (day 7 was the day assigned to rest and worship)
  4. Man, due to their fallen nature, stands opposed to the Lord and His people (Goliath is the perfect illustration of this principle – notice the repeated usage of “6” in the description of Goliath the enemy of God and His people in 1 Sam 17:1-7)

Alongside this principle of 6 being a number that is associated with the sinfulness and opposition of lost mankind to the Lord and His people, please notice that “666” stands in stark contrast to “777”.    777 is the perfect number listed three times which denotes a perfect Triune God (The Father, The Son and The Spirit).   Therefore 666 seems to indicate an imperfect, rebellious false triune god… (Satan, the beast of the sea, the beast of the earth)

666, as the number of man, teaches us that humanism is the core philosophy of Satan, the beasts and lost mankind.  What is humanism?  It is the exaltation of man.  It is saying that man should be the center of our attention, interest and devotion.  Basically, it is giving to man the honor that is due to God alone.  In that sense, humanism is making man equal to, or surpassing God Himself.

Humanism seeks followers by exalting man, using man’s pride and arrogance to appeal to the lusts of lost mankind attracting them to become followers.  Within the lost community humanism runs rampant affecting every aspect of life…

  1. Beliefs that mankind can somehow remove the guilt, shame and punishment of sin through a religious reformation, human psychological methods, censoring of the truths Of God’s Word, or even religious genocide can be seen all around us.
  2. The literal worship of other men can easily be seen in the cult following of political, entertainment, and even religious figures of our day.
  3. The praising of men works and achievements with absolutely no acknowledgement to the God that has given these men their abilities. Without God they could never have begun to achieve such great accomplishments.
  4. Looking to men to solve all of the problems of this world is lost mankind’s replacement to looking to their God as the only One truly able to resolve these issues.

These are just a few of the ways humanism can be seen in our society today.

As we see all of these attitudes in the world around us, may we always, as Christians, be on guard to not allow the humanist influences of the world enter our lives.  May we always remember that “…For in him we live, and move, and have our being…” (Act 17:27-29), and ALWAYS give to the Lord the honor and glory that he deserves!

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:17 KJV

(17)  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

In this section of John’s vision, we can see that the mark of the beast can be described in two other ways… “the name of the beast” and “the number of his name”.

Please keep in mind, the symbolic “the mark of the beast” refers to the different inward and outward characteristics of lost mankind.  The inward characteristics include the mind, desires, and conscience that are corrupted due to mankind’s fallen nature.  The outward characteristics of lost mankind involve living an habitual lifestyle of sin based upon selfishness and moral corruption.

However, according to our text this morning there are two other aspects to this mark of the beast that is placed upon all lost mankind…

  1. First of all it is described as “the name of the beast”.

Wearing the name of someone implies ownership and usage.  For example, if I write my name in a book I am saying I own the book and the book is being used by myself.  This is the same basic principle of saying that the mark of the beast involves wearing his name.

In prior verses of this vision, we have seen that “blasphemy” is one of the names that is worn by the beast from the sea (Rev 13:1).   And it is a perfect characterization of how the lost are used by Satan and his kingdom to blaspheme the most Holy God. (2 Timothy 3:2).

  1. Secondly, it is described as “the number of his name.”

Later in this vision, we see that the number referred to is the number 666 (Rev 13:18).  This is is a number that symbolizes humanism (more on this in our next devotional).   What is humanism?  It is the exaltation of man.  It is saying that man should be the center of our attention, interest and devotion.  Basically, it is giving to man the honor that is due to God alone.  In that sense, humanism is making man equal to, or surpassing God Himself.

These are the aspects of the mark of the beast that is seen placed upon all lost mankind.  The prefect text that describes this mark of the beast is found in Rom 1:21-32…

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and   fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;  Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,  Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:  Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

These characteristics make up the “mark of the beast” clearly displaying the lost man’s influence by and submission to Satan and His worldly kingdoms.

May we as Christians understand their spiritual blindness and show Christ to them in a very kind and gentle manner, knowing that we were in the same spiritually blind condition before Christ opened our eyes to the truth!

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “no man might buy or sell”

SIHs HALTAL ICON RevChristRev 13:17 KJV

(17)  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Those who do not bear the mark of the beast are unable to buy or sell.  In other words, those who are the servants of Christ cannot fully participate in the world’s systems, for to do so would mean great compromise in our stand for Christ.

So, because of our stand for our Lord, we are excluded, mistreated, rejected and taken advantage of by this fallen world’s economic, political and religious systems.   We can see this taking place all around us, the degree of mistreatment varies based upon each particular situation the Christian is facing.

For some, it may mean simply being mocked or judged falsely; for others it may mean loss of a promotion, or even a job; there are those who may face ostracization from their circle of friends or even their families; or perhaps, losses in the legal, political, or economic systems may take place.  For many Christians, especially in foreign lands, they may face physical abuse, torture and even death.

Paul described the types of mistreatment that he faced from the lost world…

1Co 4:12-13 KJV – “…being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:  Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.”

Some of the types of mistreatment he mentioned include:

  1. Being “reviled” (vilified)           2.  Being “persecuted” (hunted down)
  2. Being “defamed” (spoken against)      4.  “made as the filth” (garbage, waste)
  3. “made as the … offscouring” (scum).

Wow! Have you ever felt like Paul?

Has the world ever lied about you, and mocked you as they mischaracterized your act of honesty which looked like foolishness and naiveté to them?

Have you ever felt as though the lost world treated you like waste or scum because you choose to abstain from sinful pleasures to remain faithful to Christ?

Do you remember how “small” you felt when you were made fun of at school for carrying a Bible?

What about the feeling you had when your family turned their back on you because you had left their false religion in order to be a follower of Christ?

Our list could go one and on.

Probably, to a certain extent, we have all felt that way at one time or another.  We all have been called upon to suffer abuse at the hands of the fallen world.  Some of us have been greatly abused, others not so much.  But in each and every case, it hurt us within and brought some type of loss into our life.

But if you notice, back in our 1 Corinthians 4: passage, we can see that Paul recognized this abuse was a tremendous opportunity to be faithful to His Lord.

Paul:

  1. “blessed” (spoke kindly about and to his abusers)
  2. “suffered” (held remained firm through God’s intervention in his life)
  3. “intreated” (he prayed for his abusers and their spiritual needs)

By handling his abuse in this way, he was being faithful to the Lord in four ways…

  1. He was continuously pleasing to the Lord, before, during and after the abuse
  2. He was setting a wonderful example for other believers to follow
  3. He was showing Christ to his abusers through his acts of kindness and love towards them
  4. He was laying up for himself eternal rewards

May we all follow Paul’s wonderful example of faithfulness in the abusive situations we face.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:16 KJV

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

The mark of the beast can be seen in both the head and hand of his followers.  What can we learn from this truth?

Please keep in mind that the mark of the beast is simply the characteristics of those who are under the influence and Satan and His worldly powers.  When the Word says that the mark of the beast is found on the forehead and/or hand it is saying that these characteristics can be found in both the thoughts, choices and actions of those who are a part of Satan’s kingdoms.   The Bible clearly supports these principles:

The mind of the lost:

Tit 1:15 KJV – “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.”

Here, those who are lost are described as being “defiled” (contaminated) and  “unbelieving” (destitute of faith).  Both their mind and conscience are contaminated by sin and the worldly carnal influences.

2Co 11:3 KJV – “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”

Here, the lost person’s mind is described as being “corrupted” (spoiled, brought to ruin).  In other words, its contamination and unbelief results in the mind being useless in the pursuit and application of spiritual truth.

The actions of the lost:

Gal 5:19-21 KJV – “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,   Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,   Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Here we find a listing of many outward characteristics that can be found in the life of those who are a part of the kingdom of Satan:

  1. Adultery – transferring our affections from spouse to another
  2. fornication – intimate relations outside the marriage union
  3. uncleanness – impurities
  4. lasciviousness – loss of control or restraint
  5. Idolatry – worship of other gods
  6. witchcraft – use of drugs, potions, spells
  7. hatred – hostility, enmity
  8. variance – quarrelling
  9. emulations – long-term malice
  10. wrath – burning, eplosive hatred
  11. strife – divisions
  12. seditions – arguing, disturbance
  13. heresies – false teachings
  14. Envyings – jealousy
  15. murders – to slay
  16. drunkenness – intoxication
  17. revellings – rioting

The relationship between the corrupt mind and the sinful actions of the lost…

Jas 1:15 KJV “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Here, the lost person’s defiled desires (lusts) will lead them to willfully choose to commit acts of sin.  Their outward actions are only indicators of their corrupted inward condition

May we all remember that a lost person’s visible lifestyle is only half the story when it comes to their membership in the kingdom of Satan.  It is not enough for a lost individual to simply “clean up his act” and outwardly reform his actions to remove himself from Satan’s influence.

Because their inward being is also corrupt, they need more than outward reformation.  They need to receive an inward change of heart which only can come through the gracious salvation that is found in Christ alone…

Eze 36:26 KJV – “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

This is the only change that can remove a lost person from Satan’s rule to live a new life in service to Christ as a child of God.

Revelation 13: Summary

SIH STSTA ICON

SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTER:

In Revelation chapter 13, we looked at the two great earthly kingdoms used by Satan in his war against Christ and His people.  These kingdoms are the political kingdoms of this world and the religious kingdoms of this world.  Satan uses both of these to oppose the work of Christ by directly persecuting the people of God.

This chapter can be outlined as follows:

  1. The Beast of the Sea – The Political Kingdoms of This World (13:1-10)
  2. The Beast of the Earth – The False Religions of This World (13:11-15)
  3. The Mark of the Beast – The Number of Man (13:16-18)

SUMMARY OF EACH DIVISION OF CHAPTER:

  1. Revelation 13:1-10 – The Beast From The Sea (The Political Kingdoms of This World)

In this section of John’s vision, we see a Satanic, wild, dangerous beast arising from the sea (the unsettled mass of fallen humanity).

The beast’s seven heads symbolize the seven world empires that will control the world until Christ comes again (Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo/Persia, Greece, Rome, Various World Powers).  The physical description of its body, feet and mouth all refer to the previous empires that have existed in history.  The names appearing on the beast’s heads (blasphemy) teach us one of the core roles of the political empires is to speak against God.

The ten horns on the seventh head picture the various countries that will attempt to control the world coming after the dividing of the Roman Empire.

The deadly wound received by the sixth head (the Roman Empire) represents Christ’s death on the cross which won the ultimate victory over this beast.    The appearance of the healing of this wound, speaks of the timeframe following the crucifixion when the beast continues to be active.  At the second coming of Christ, the true deadly nature of this wound is revealed with the beast being cast into the Lake of Fire for an eternity.

This beast receives its power and position from Satan, himself, under the Sovereign will of allowance of God.  Finally in the last portion of this section we read the Lord’s assurance that Divine retribution will be sent against this beast for it’s great acts of rebellion, blasphemy and abuse against the Lord and His people.

  1. Revelation 13:11-15 – The Beast From The Earth (The Religious Kingdoms Of This World)

John is now introduced to the second beast, the beast that comes from the earth.  This beast represents the religious kingdoms of this world (false religions, prophets, teachers and antichrists in the world).

This beast is said to resemble a lamb with two horns but speaking like a dragon.  This reveals to us the deceitful nature of this beast that appears to be a gentle, humble, spiritual kingdom but is, in actually, the mouthpiece of Satan, himself.  Although this beast look very different from the first beast, and possesses a different set of roles to fulfill, these beasts still share the same authority, message and leader.  Throughout history the false religions of this world speak great words of comfort and hope while leading lost mankind down a path that leads to their ultimate destruction.

Along with possessing deceitful speech, this beast performs great miracles hoping to attract followers.  These miracles are counterfeit divine miracles that are affective in misleading lost mankind to follow them unquestioningly.

This beast causes their followers to create an idolatrous image as a part of their service to the beast.  This image is symbolic of the fruits of ministry that are born by these lost indivduals.   By creating an image lost mankind is declaring through their works of false righteousness that they have turned their backs on the true God and now are accepting of false worship which is idolatry.  Also they are declaring that they are adherents to a humanistic philosophy that states that men are able, in and of themselves, to create their own gods and worship them as if they were the true God over all.

By presenting these images to the political kingdoms in charge, they are proving beyond doubt that they have been misled by the religious powers of the world and are now followers of the doctrines of Satan himself.  The image receives life in the sense that the outward ancient practices of the heathen are constantly being reintroduced to mankind in a new way appealing to their senses and deceiving them into making them lifestyle choices.

  1. Revelation 13: 16-18– The Mark Of The Beast

Finally, it is revealed to John that these beasts work in harmony to have their followers receive “the mark of the beast” which is also dewscribed as “666” and “the number of a man”.   When these titles are examined closely we can see this mark is a symbolic way of saying that the followers of the beast have taken upon themselves the teachings of humanism, unsuccessful attempts to become perfect in God’s sight through their own works, and sinful rebellion against God.

This mark was to be placed upon their forehead and/or right hand.  This was indicative of the mark of ownership and servitude placed upon slaves in the Roman Empire.  This helps us to understand that anyone who takes part in the ministry of these two beasts are the property of Satan, serving him as a lifestyle.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT IN THIS SERIES?:

In Revelation chapter 14, we will begin to look in greater detail at the second coming of Christ.  This will mark the end of the activities of Satan and his political and religious kingdoms of this world.  Not only do we see the end of the powers of the darkness of this world, but also the protection and safety of the people of God.

A short outline of chapter 14 includes:

1.  The New Song Of The 144,000 (14:1-5)
2.  The Three Angels (14:6-13)
3.  The Reaping Of The Earth(14:14-20)

May the Lord bless us as we seek to see Jesus in the pages of the book of Revelation.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:16 KJV

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

So who will possess “the mark of the beast” (ie the characteristics of those who are submissive to Satan and his worldly kingdoms)?   Individuals that are a part of every possible social, economic, and religious parts of mankind can be in submission to Satan and his kingdoms.

It doesn’t matter how much or little respect we may possess;  it does not matter how much of the world’s wealth we may own;  nor what positions of authority or servitude we may hold; men from throughout all areas of society are under the influence of Satan and the bondage of sin.

Rom 3:23 KJV – “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

This verse helps us to understand that men of all social, economic, and political status are capable of being under the influence of sin and under Satan’s influence.

As a matter of fact, please notice this verse tells us that ALL men are fallen sinful creatures due to the influence of Satan in this world.  That means that even those who are now in willful submission to Christ, were at one point in their lives under the bondage of sin and influenced by Satan.   Yes, even Christians were under Satan’s rule prior to their deliverance from sin.

This basic principle holds great importance for both lost and saved alike…

For those who have never come to know Christ as Lord and Savior, you should never feel “safe” in your social, financial, or political status.  There is no amount of fame, fortune or political power that can deliver you from Satan’s influence, nor the judgment that awaits all who are a part of his worldly kingdoms.

So what can you do?

Mar 1:15 KJV – “And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

The Lord clearly explains in His Word that you are called to simply:

  1. repent (agree with God about your sins and your sinful condition, turn from your sins, and turn to Christ)
  2. believe the gospel, in other words, place your faith in Christ believing that He died on the cross to pay your sin debt and was resurrected proving to all that He had successfully secured the salvation of His people. He was then seen by many witnesses proving His death and resurrection were not simple a fable or a legend.

For those who are saved, we should see the need of Christ by ALL mankind and be motivated to minister to all that may cross our path.  No matter how rich and famous, or poor and infamous a person may be, they all need Christ.

As the opportunity opens to us, we should always be willing to minister to anyone in need of Christ, whether a king or a slave, a mega-millionaire or someone who is homeless…

“For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Revelation 13:16-18 “The Mark Of The Beast: 666”

SIH STSTA ICON

THE TEXT:

Rev 13:16-18 KJV

(16)  And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
(17)  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
(18)  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

THE INTRODUCTION:

In chapter 12, we saw a defeated Satan’s continuing opposition against the Lord and His people.  Throughout the ages, Satan has used the political kingdoms of this fallen world as tools in an attempt to abuse, persecute and even martyr the people of God.

We have looked at the POLITICAL and RELIGIOUS powers of the world and how Satan has used them throughout history to afflict the people of God.  We saw these aspects of Satan’s kingdom in vs 1-15.

In the middle portion of chapter 13 (vs 11-15), we will learn more about the SPIRITUAL kingdoms of this world as they afflict the people of God.  Then, in the following portion of chapter 13, we will be introduced the “mark” (major characteristic) of those who join the beast in its stand against the people of God.

  1. The Beast of the Sea – The Political Kingdoms of This World (13:1-10)
  2. The Beast of the Earth – The False Religious Kingdoms of This World (13:11-15)
  3. The Mark of the Beast – The Number of Humanism (13:16-18)

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Rev 13:16-18 KJV

(16)  And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark

The false religions of the world cause men of all social and economic status to receive their mark (an outward indication of their relationship with that religion.

It includes men that:

  1. “small and great” – those that hold little or much authority, fear and respect of others.
  2. “rich or poor” – those that are wealthy or poverty stricken
  3. “free or bond” – those who are freemen and those who are slaves

They are to receive a “mark” (ie an impress or scratch or etching).  In other words, the mark is an outward declaration of the man’s affiliation with this false religion (Rev 13:16, 14:9, 17:15, 20:4).  Much like baptism in water is a public declaration of the Christian’s faith in Christ and membership in a local assembly.

What is this mark that the lost of the world will receive?  It will not be a literal mark but it is their outward testimony of allegiance to these kingdoms (Matt 7:15-20).   It shows forth in what they live for, what they are committed to, what their actions proclaim and what their mouths testify.  It is very much like the Christian’s testimony (their baptism, lifestyle, and speech) that reveal to others that they are one of Christ’s.    Lost mankind “receives” this mark but submitting to the teachings and commands of these kingdoms.  In doing so, their life begins to testify to their allegiance to the beasts.

in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

This mark is said to be placed on their right hand or their forehead.  Keep in mind, in the days of the Roman empire, Servants were given marks on their hand or forehead that would show their ownership.

Also the forehead and hand represent the two great areas of a servants dedication to their master.  The forehead represents their inward parts being dedicated to their master (their love, desires and thoughts).  The right hand represents their outward acts of service (their labor and works) done in obedience to their master.

Keep in mind, this mark of the beast ( was to mimic the people of God who are said to be marked by God for protection and declaration of ownership (Exo 28:36-38, Ezek 9:4-6, 16:8-13, Rev 9:4, 14:1, 22:4)

(17)  And that no man might buy or sell,

Throughout history, the areas of worldly power and wealth are found in the political and religious arenas of this world.   If men are a part of these kingdoms they can receive the favor, wealth and power of this world.  Those who have kept themselves separate from these are in danger of ostracism, persecution, or even martyrdom.  These very acts are predicted to take place in the lives of Christians throughout the ages (2 Tim 3:12, Matt 10:22-25, John 16:2, 1 Thess 3:3-4 etc).

save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

The identifying characteristics of those dedicated to the kingdoms of Satan are described in three ways:

  1. The mark – the graven mark… an outward identifying mark. This mark reveals to others to whom there is allegiance
  2. The name of the beast – The identifying title of the beast. This mark shows us who the beast is.  Just like a Christians’ testimony reveals Christ to the world.
  3. The number of his name – The identifying number of the beast…. “666”

(18)  Here is wisdom.

Here is the wise way to understand these things.  Here is a revealing of the true nature of this mark.  This is the way to understand this mark when you apply God’s Word to the explanation of the mark.  This is how a wise man will come to understand this mark.

Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:

To come to an proper identity of the mark you must “count” the number of the beast.  To “count” is translated form a word that means carries with it the idea of “counting stones”, “examining stones”, “touching stones”.

In those days, stones were used as: a ballot to vote, as a ticket to gain entrance, or as stones used to count up sums.

In all three of these examples you have stones being examined (or counted) to come to a conclusion….

  1. count the stones used as a ballot to understand the verdict that has been rendered
  2. examine the existence of a stone to allow admission to an event
  3. count up stones to find a sum

To “count the number of the beast” – means to examine the number of the beast to come to a proper understanding of it.  Much like “counting the cost” (examine by adding up the costs involved – Lk 14:28), you would count individual stones to find a verdict or prove possession of a stone to all admission.  In other words, by examining the number that is associated with this mark, will reveal the true nature and identity of the beasts and the person that is marked.

for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

The mark is described in two complimentary ways…

  1. it is the number of a man (as compared to the number of a God or an angel or another part of creation)
  2. it is the number 666 – six throughout the bible is the number of man, imperfection and labor
  3. man made on sixth day
  4. man falls short of perfection (7 number of perfection)
  5. man consigned to 6 days of labor (day 7 is day set aside for God and rest)
  6. Goliath is symbolic of sinful rebellious mankind (6 linked closely to Goliath – (see 1 Sam 17:1-7)
  7. 666 as “The Imperfect Trinity” (Satan, The Beast from the Sea, The Beast from the Earth) stands in stark contrast to 777 “The Perfect Trinity” (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit).

This mark is the number 666.  This is the mark of a man (mankind). “a” is used here not to speak of a specific man, but to speak of a man in comparison to other parts of God’s creation.  It is not the number of an animal, a planet, or a sun…. it is the number of “a man”.  This is the true interpretation of this mark.

Here are some of the truths about Satan, the two beasts, and lost mankind can learn from this number:

  1. as the number of man, we can learn that humanism is the core philosophy of Satan, the beasts and lost man. They all seek to exalt man, using man’s pride and arrogance to appeal to them attracting them to become followers.  Although they claim perfection, they always fail as a part of fallen creation.  None are perfect, nor can become perfect based upon their own efforts and works.
  2. as the number of imperfection, we can learn that all of these fall far short of pleasing the Lord and securing peace with God.
  3. as the number of labor, we can see that their labor is fruitless, their attempts to overthrow God are wasted, they have already been defeated and sentenced to the Lake of Fire.
  4. as the number of sinful rebellion against God, we can see that all of these (Satan, his kingdoms and lost mankind) exhibit a rebellious attitude towards the Lord.
  5. as the “Imperfect Trinity” (666) Satan and the two beasts, although they claim perfection, fall far short of the perfection of the Lord Most High. Mankind is also an imperfect trinity (body, soul, and spirit), all mankind have been touched by sin and alienated from God.

Truly, the mark 666 has fallen upon all who have become a part of the powers of darkness in the spiritual warfare about us.  Whether it be fallen mankind, the political and religious powers of the world or Satan himself, they all wear the name of blasphemy and carry with them the mark of imperfect, prideful, fallen mankind and the powers of darkness… 666.

CHRIST REVEALED:

In this lesson about the mark of the beast, we find a very valuable lesson about Christ.  In the simple mark of 666, we can see that everything that Satan, his beasts, and lost mankind are not… Christ IS!

As we looked at this mark and saw the imperfection, sinfulness and separation from God that is experienced by them, we find Christ standing in great contrast as the Perfect, Sinless, One who enjoyed perfect unity with His Father in heaven…

Php 2:5-11 KJV –

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:   Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:   But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:   And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:   That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;   And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

May we all praise the Lord for being who we are not.  If he were simply another man, we all would be faced with eternal doom, however, because He was far greater than fallen man, He could be our perfect sacrifice for sin and become our Lord and Savior.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

Folks, the exaltation of man and the debasement of Christ are two hallmarks of Satan and his kingdoms.  Anytime, we find man given praise or honor at the expense of Christ’s greatness is certain to be rooted in humanism and the kingdoms of Satan.  May we always be on guard against giving man credit for things that only God deserves all the praise.   May we always remember that Christ alone is the One to be glorified and honored with our lives.

THE RELATED SCRIPTURES:

SUPPLEMENTAL STUDIES/NOTES:

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “he had power to give life unto the image of the beast”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:15 – “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.”

Here, we are told that the beast of the earth (symbolic of the false religions of the world) have the power to “give life” to the idolatrous image which was made by man.

We have seen previously, the image symbolizes human works of righteousness that result from following these false religions.

Some of these works include many practices of the false religions (religious rites, practices and celebrations, etc);  human works that are done to gain favor with the false god (acts of obedience, contrition, etc);  as well as humanistic beliefs put into practice (decision making based upon situation ethics and moral relativity,  etc).   Satan is an absolute master at giving these things “life”.  In other words, Satan takes these false religious practices and gives them new, added appeal to the masses…

The New Age Movement is a perfect example of Satan’s giving of new life to that which is ancient.  For example, the ancient practice of speaking to dead spirits by way of a “medium”, is now described as “channeling”; “out of body experiences” are now called “astral projecting traveling”;  the “god” of the New Age movement is a combination of ancient heresies such as humanism (man as god) and pantheism (everything is god), turning God into a “personal life force”.    These beliefs and practices are just a few examples of Satan giving life to ancient heresies through the use of the New Age Movement.

The same principles can be applied to many of the observances of the Catholic faith which are a combination of Christian observances united with pagan observances of times past.  A few of these include:  Christmas is the celebration of Christ’s birth united with the winter solstice.  Easter is a remembrance of the resurrection of Christ united with the celebration of the Goddess Ishtar.   These and many other practices of the Catholic church are linked to pagan practices of ancient times.

Folks, these are just a few of many, many, examples of Satan’s restoring of ancient practices and doctrines of false religions remaking them into very appealing practices in today’s world.

This has been the way that Satan has worked from day one in the garden of Eden.  Stop and think about it.  Satan’s mode of operation in the garden was to make that which was forbidden look very desirable.  He did this by totally deceiving (beguiling) Eve (2 Cor 11:3).  What did the deception of Eve entail?  It was making the fruit appear desirable and beneficial….

Gen 3:6 KJV – “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise,…”

Instead of seeing the fruit for what it really was… a fruit that was harmful and forbidden by God, Satan made it look beneficial and acceptable to be eaten.  He continues to use these same tactics today as the spiritual warfare continues.

May we all be on guard for Satan’s schemes to beautify and make desirable that which is harmful to us!

1Jn 2:16 KJV – “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “they should make an image”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:14 KJV

(14)  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

One of the great goals of the world’s false religions (beast from the earth) is to cause men to commit the sin of idolatry.  What is the sin of idolatry… my simplified definition is “to love or worship any person, or thing, as God, other than Jehovah”.   In our text, the false religion’s desire to lead men into idolatry is described as “saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast”.

When mankind follows the direction of this beast, and commits the sin of idolatry, we can learn two major truths about mankind’s spiritual condition…

  1. First of all, it proves they are now willfully rejecting the worship of Jehovah and accepting of false worship.

The making of idols for worship is specifically rejected by Jehovah and clearly taught in the ten commandments (Exo 20:4-6).   For mankind to participate in the making of idols is to purposefully reject the clear commands of Jehovah.  But also, in those days images were very commonly employed in false religious worship (2 Kings 3:2, Isa 40:19, Dan 3, Jud 17:3, Isa 40:19, Jer 10: 14 etc etc).  Again, this leaves no room for ignorance on the part of mankind.

When mankind chooses to commit idolatry, they are willfully choosing to reject the true worship of Jehovah and participate in false worship that originates from Satan himself.

  1. Secondly, it proves they have readily accepted humanism (the exaltation of man as the supreme authority) as the ultimate truth.

If we stop and think about it… God is so great, He is the only One who is capable of giving us an image of Himself.    He did that for us when He created man (Gen 1:26-27) and when He sent Christ to the earth (Col 1:14-17).  NO MAN can begin to understand the greatness of Jehovah which is necessary to make an acceptable image of Jehovah.  For mankind to create any supposed image of God is an act of blatant humanism.  When men make an image of their “god” they are saying one of two things, either…

  1. They are saying… that man is equal to Jehovah because, with the works of his own hands, he can create a proper image of Jehovah;
  2. Or, they are saying that mankind has the ability to create their own gods and to worship as they see fit.   This places man above the authority of Jehovah making him a god unto himself.

In either case, it is false worship and humanism at its worst.

Sadly, even Christians can, at times be guilty of idolatry in their lives.  Anything, other than the Lord, that we put first in our lives has become an idol to us.

To test this in our own lives, we are to think of the things, or people, that are of most value to us.   If, to remain faithful to the Lord, we had to turn from them, would we be willing to?   This is a true test of idolatry in our lives and it take a very sincere, unbiased look at our lives to come to an honest answer.

May we all, through the gracious intervention of God, be able to sincerely submit to the teachings of our Lord, who said…

Mat 19:28-30 KJV –

“And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you,…   And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.    But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “deceiveth them…by the means of those miracles”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:14 KJV

(14)  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

In our text, the false religions of the world are said to mislead others through the use of miracles.

The use of divine miracles in both OT and NT was used to prove that those who performed the miracles were sent by God.  We can see this method of validation used in the lives of Moses, Elijah, Elisha, Joshua, the Apostles and most importantly, Christ Himself among others.

In spite of the divine accrediting miracles,  counterfeits also existed in the OT (magicians in Pharaoh’s day – Exo 7:-9:), and in the NT (Simon, the sorcerer – Acts 8:) and continue into todays’ time.

The Lord plainly tells us that these things will take place until His return…

2Th 2:8-10 KJV – “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:  Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

Mat 7:22-23 KJV – “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?    And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Because of this incredibly deceitful method of misleading others, we are to be always on guard against them…

Mat 24:24 KJV – “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

Folks, the Bible explains that the accrediting miracles of God went out of existence after the completion of God’s Word in approx. 100 AD.   From that point forward, we can no longer use the performance of miracles to validate the teachings of those who perform those miracles.

***For more information and a detailed explanation of the above please see these two series that can be found on this blog:

https://settledinheaven.wordpress.com/category/sih-series/spiritual-gifts/

May we all use Biblical principles as we judge the claims of accrediting miracles that we see take place around us.

May we all take these Scriptural warnings very seriously and quickly turn from those who claim to be messengers of the Lord, while in actuality are being enabled and led by Satan to deceive even the very elect of God… if it were possible.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”  (Mat 24:24 KJV)

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “he spake as a dragon”

SIH STSTA ICONRev 13:11 KJV

(11)  And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

In our last devotional, we saw that the beast from the earth (symbolic of false religions and false prophets and teachers) can appear to be innocent and harmless.  In our devotional for this morning we will see that, although they appear innocent and harmless, in actuality they are very deceitful.  They follow their leader, Satan, as they speak deceitfully with intent to harm the people of Christ.

We are told that this beast “spake as a dragon” (Satan).

Therefore, to understand the speech of this beast, we must come to an understanding of the speech of his father, Satan.  Christ, during His earthly ministry addressed this very subject…

“Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.   Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.   And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.”  (Joh 8:43-45 KJV)

In this passage the Lord points out several truths about the nature and speech of Satan.  Christ tells us that Satan:

  1. Is a murderer from the beginning – In other words, he actively works to bring death to mankind. This happened through his intervention at the fall of man and then continues throughout history through the false teachings of his political powers that proclaim the message that leads men to their eternal spiritual death.
  1. Abides not in the truth because there is no truth in him. – In other words, truth cannot be found in him. Because his nature is to deceive and mislead, he lives a life filled with constant deceit and lies.
  1. He is a liar and the father of all lies – In other words, he is the originator of deceitful, misleading words and lives a lifestyle of the same.

All of these points helps us to understand the message presented by the false religions and prophets of this world.  They consistently mislead others by proclaiming error that is meant to lead men away from Christ and to their eternal spiritual death.  It is in this sense that they speak “as a dragon”.

Folks, in the last two devotionals, we have had set before us a clear declaration of the ministry of the false religions that have existed throughout history.   With this clear declaration comes the responsibility to guard against the lies of these religions.  But, not only are we to guard against these false teachings, but we must clearly present the truths of God’s Word, to counteract the lies of Satan’s false teachers…

“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;    Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.     For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;    And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.     But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”  (2Ti 4:1-5 KJV)

Although the above verses are addressed to a pastor (Timothy), it is important to remember that, to a lesser degree, we are all responsible to present the truths of Christ to a lost and dying world.  In doing so, we are giving to them the good news of Christ, His work on their behalf and the wonderful eternity that awaits all of those who have placed their faith in Christ!

May we all speak the truth and live the truth, opposing the lies of this world’s false religions.  In doing so, we are giving much needed light to a world that is encased in the darkness of Satanic deceit.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “he had two horns like a lamb ”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:11 KJV

(11)  And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

In this section of John’s vision, he sees the beast from the earth (symbolic of false religions and false teachers).

In his description of this beast, John states “he had two horns like a lamb”.   This description helps us to understand the very deceitful nature of this beast.   Although this beast is very harmful to man, he looks very innocent, meek and kind…. Just like a lamb.  They look and many times sound very tame and harmless.  Their teaching honors men and degrades the truths about our God; while they minimize our need of the true Christ and emphasize our great need of another god.

These other gods can take the form of idols made with men’s hands; or the wealth, fame and authority of this world; or perhaps, present man, himself, as the key to resolving all of our problems and shortcomings.  But in reality, the god they present to mankind is the god of this world, Satan, and the need to follow his teachings to their ultimate destruction.

This reminds us of the teaching of Christ, in which he emphasizes that the nature of false religions, and the individuals who teach their doctrine, is appearing deceitfully gentle while being inwardly destructive….

Mat 7:15-17 KJV – “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.   Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?   Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.”

Christ not only emphasizes the deceitful nature of false teachers and religions, but He goes further and helps us to understand how we can recognize them in spite of their deceitful appearance.   He tells us that “Ye shall know them by their fruits”.

So what are the fruits we are to look for when he attempt to discern between true and false teaching?

Teachers of the truth will bear the following fruits as a part of their teachings….

  1. Their teachings will align themselves with the teachings of God’s Word (1 Tim 6:3-5)
  2. Their message will always exalt Christ as the true Messiah, Lord and Savior of the world. (Acts 4:8-12, 1 John 2:22-23)
  3. Their message will present man as in desperate need of Christ, and Christ alone. (Roms 3:23-26)
  4. Their message will always present the remedy to mankind’s sinful condition as described in the gospel… Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, along with its proofs . (Gals 1:8-9)
  5. Their message will center on the need for faith, apart from works, for the receipt of salvation (Acts 3:15-16)

These are just a few of the marks of a true messenger sent by God to minister to a lost and dying world.  May we all seek out churches and men of God who hold forth these fruits in their teaching ministry.

Revelation 13:11-15 “The Beast From The Earth”

(11)  And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
(12)  And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
(13)  And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
(14)  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
(15)  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

THE INTRODUCTION:

In chapter 12, we saw a defeated Satan’s continuing opposition against the Lord and His people.  Throughout the ages, Satan has used the political kingdoms of this fallen world as tools in an attempt to abuse, persecute and even martyr the people of God.

We have looked at the POLITICAL powers of the world and how Satan has used them throughout history to afflict the people of God.  We saw this aspect of Satan’s kingdom in vs 1-10.

Rev 13:11-15 KJV

(11)  And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

After John sees the beast of the sea (the political kingdoms of the world being used by Satan to afflict the people of God), his attention is turned to another beast.   This beast will be symbolic of the RELIGIOUS kingdoms of this world, ie the false religions of this world, that are used by Satan to oppose God, His truths, and His people.  He is called “the false prophet” in Revelation 16:13, 19:20, 20:10.

John gives us a very detailed description of this beast.  First of all it is described as “another” beast.  This word means “another of the same type” of beast.  In other words, it is another wild, dangerous, enemy of God and His people.

John continues with a description of the physical appearance of the beast…

Description References Symbolism
Comes Up Out Of The Earth Daniel 7:17 This beast finds its origin in the sinful fallen earth. False religions appeal to the carnal nature in men, who desire to fulfill the spiritual viod in their life, but refuse to submit to the true God.  In response, they create false gods and willingly submit to them.
2 Horns Like A Lamb Daniel 7:8, Matt 7:15 This beast appears as a lamb, counterfeiting Christ.  All false religions attempt to replace the True Lamb of God as the source of life, salvation and blessings.   Horns are pictures of power and weapons.  The false promises and teachings given by false religions are the source of their strength and weapons of warfare against the Lord and His people.
Speaks Like A Dragon John 8:44,2 Cor 11:3,2 Cor 11:13-15,2 Thess 2:9-11,Matt 24:24 This beast speaks as Satan speaks… with great lies. This beast’s ministry centers on lying to his followers, just as Satan is the Father of lies.  Satan uses the false religions of this world (their teachings and miracles) to lie, mislead and deceive the world.  In doing so, he is stealing away the worship that Christ alone deserves.

(Please notice that, just as the previous beast, this beast finds its origins in Daniel 7)

The first beast which represented the POLITICAL powers of the world is described as a horrifying beast.  This refers to the kingdoms of the world’s great military might, and powerful vicious leaders.

In comparison, the second beast, the RELIGIOUS powers of the world, is pictured as a gentle, kind lamb-like beast. It deceitfully shows itself to be harmless, but in reality, is incredibly harmful, misleading others to an eternity in the Lake of Fire.

(12)  And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

This beast possesses the same (power) authority as the first beast…

  1. The political powers of the world were said to possess the authority to speak blasphemies against the Lord… so too, the false religions of this world.
  2. The political powers were said to have the authority to rule over every area of the world. Likewise, the false religions of the world appear in every nation, language and families found in this world.

The state religions of the world have been used throughout time to lead men to submission to the political powers of this world.  Throughout the history of the world, false religions have caused many wars to take place between political powers.  In an attempt to force men to worship a specified religion, the political powers of the world have forcibly dominated nations and opposing religious groups alike.  In every case, the end result was forced worship and submission to the invading political government and its state religion.

(Perhaps the greatest example of the political powers and religious powers of the world working in harmony against the cause of Christ can be seen at the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Christ.  In that case, we have the Jewish religious leaders worked in harmony with the Gentile Roman government to put Christ to death. (John 18:1-40 etc))

(13)  And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,  (14)  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast;

One of the greatest tools used by false religions to mislead mankind are “great wonders”, many various unexplainable feats.  These great wonders will be a consistent tool used by false religions until their ultimate defeat at the coming of Christ to the earth.

The one “marvel” used to represent all the wonders that the false religions performed is that of calling fire down from heaven.  Throughout the OT times and also during the early NT times fire falling from heaven was consistently used as a sign of the true worship of Jehovah:

  1. 2 Kings 1:10-14 – Elijah 2.  Lev 10:2 – Jehovah               3.  Nums 11:1 – Jehovah
  2. Num 16:35 – Jehovah 5.  Judges 6:21 – Jehovah           6.  1 King 18:38 – Jehovah
  3. Exo 9:13-on – Jehovah 8.  Acts 2:7 – Local Church

(This helps us to understand that all the miracles that are performed by the false religions are counterfeits of the true miracles of God.  They are used to deceitfully misled men into believing the false religion is approved and authorized by God.)

These false wonders are done in the eyes of men in an effort to mislead them, but also done in the sight of the beast being approved, authorized, and used by the political powers of the world.

Keep in mind, despite of all these “great wonders”, they are still false religions that will face the judgment of God in the future…

Mat 7:22-23 KJV – “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?   And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Following the deception of their followers, the false religions then instruct them to create idols of false worship and present them to the powers that be.  This is a very important point that should not be overlooked:

  1. It proves they are now accepting of false worship – The creation of idols and images are always associated with false worship and relying on the works of man to please God. Images were very commonly employed in false religious worship (Ex 20:4, 2 Kings 3:2, Isa 40:19, Dan 3, Jud 17:3, Isa 40:19, Jer 10: 14 etc etc)  This is blasphemy at its worst.
  1. It proves they have readily accepted humanism (man is the supreme authority) as the ultimate truth – God is the only One who is capable of creating an image of Himself. He did that for us when He created man (Gen 1:26-27).  To create any other supposed image of God is an act of blatant humanism.  It is believing that man, with the works of his own hands, can create an image of Almighty God; or, it is saying that mankind has the ability to create their own gods and to worship it as they see fit.  In either case, it is false worship and humanism at its worst.

Note: This is saying that their acts of idolatry and humanism were created to be presented to the beast of the sea.  This was to prove that the beast of the earth has accomplished its task…

It is saying to the political powers, I have successfully misled your citizens to no longer worship the true God.  They are now worshipping their own creation.  They now are reliant upon themselves and their own abilities to develop and worship as they please.  Now they are yours for the taking.  Their knowledge of God and possibility of coming to the worship of the true God is no longer standing in your way.  You can now be the ultimate authority in their life to do as you please.

(15)  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Please remember:

  1. The image of the beast represents the ACTS of false worship of mankind and the humanistic PRACTICES followed by mankind.
  2. The giving of life to the image is speaking of continued deceit being used to mislead those watching to partake of this false worship and humanism.

Keeping this in mind, “giving life unto the image” is speaking of Satan’s continuing attempts to make false worship and humanism appealing to mankind.  Basically, it is speaking of the continuous changing of false worship and humanism so that it appeals to the masses:

  1. One example of this is the ancient religions of the far-east now being repackaged as “the New Age” religions. Nothing in the New Age movement is new, it is simply presented in a new way to lost mankind.
  2. Another example would be repackaging of humanism as “the power of positive thinking” and “situational ethics” etc etc.
  3. Another example would be the practices and festivals of heathen worship incorporated into the “holy days” of the Catholic Church.

When our text says “that the image of the beast should both speak”, it is describing two basic principles…

  1. These acts of false worship, gradually, over time have gained a voice of their own, becoming a source of enlistment to these false religions. Many acts of false worship can be used to entice others to join the false religions from which they originate.  It no longer matters what the doctrinal stand of a false religion might be, now simply seeing their practices and wonders, many people ignorantly choose to follow them. There are many lost who believe that the acts of worship (many times the wonders that are performed) prove that a false religion is of God.  Based upon this, they will participate in this false worship without ever comparing their teachings with God’s Word.
  1. Also, these acts of worship speak for themselves by becoming “proofs” of a person’s participation in a given religion. Judgment is now made based upon their participation in these acts of worship… “Do you observe the holy days?”  “Do you speak in tongues?”  “Do you speak to the dead?” etc etc.  All of this is done in an effort to judge true from false worshippers and is used by Satan to bring persecution upon those who do not participate in the false and humanistic worship that he strives to promote.

It is in these two senses that the acts of worship now speak as clearly as the false religions that they represent. The existence of the “experience” (or act of worship) attracts and justifies the participants of that religion.

CHRIST REVEALED:

When we look at the “ministry” of the false religions of the world, we can clearly see their results worked among men.  They seal a man’s spiritual death, leading them down the path of destruction through deceit.

In comparison, our Lord describes Himself as “The way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).   What a blessing it is to know the Lord that we serve is the way that gives us access to His Heavenly Father.    He supplies to us the absolute truth of the very Word of God.  He is the One that is the source of eternal life to those who trust in Him.

Joh 14:5-7 KJV

“Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?   Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.   If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.”

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

When we see the deceitful workings of the false religions of the world, and the power behind those religions (Satan), we come to understand their great danger to mankind.   May we all come away from this teaching with two determined attitudes.

First of all, may we all learn to diligently guard ourselves against doctrinal impurity and participation in the ungodly practices of these false religions.

Secondly, may we also learn to appreciate our Lord, “the way, the truth and the life”, who has so graciously delivered from error, supplied to us the truths of His Word, and continues to lead us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.  What a wonderful Lord we serve and how much He deserves our entire commitment to Him and His will for our lives.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the patience and the faith of the saints.”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:10 KJV

(10)  He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

The Lord gives to us the promise of divine retribution for wrongdoers.  In this case, the wrongdoers are the political powers of this world.  The wrongdoing is their abuse of the people of God.

The Lord promises that any wrongdoing performed by those in authority will come back upon their head…  “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.”

The Lord goes a step further explaining that this principle is a motivating force behind the saints continued obedience in the face of such persecution.  It is one of the sources of “the patience and the faith of the saints”.

PATIENCE, based upon FAITH, that the final punishment of the wicked is only a matter of time.  It is a certainty, promised by a God who is ALWAYS faithful.

It is the saints trusting the Lord with His promises, and then putting that trust in practice by continuing to be faithful to Him in the midst of the persecution…

Heb 10:23-24 KJV – “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)  And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”

May we all trust the Lord and patiently serve Him no matter what Satan may bring our way.  May we always know that He is faithful and, therefore, any abuse we face will be avenged, and any opposition put before us will ultimately fail.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:8 KJV

(8)  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

As the beast from the sea (the political powers of the world) continues to speak words of blasphemy against the Lord, those dwelling on the earth will worship the beast for its great power, wealth, fame and authority.

Those dwelling on the earth at the Lord’s second coming are described as those ”whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”….

“The Book of Life”
The book of life of the Lamb contains the names of those who are sovereignly chosen to be the recipients of spiritual life and salvation from their sins by God.

“of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”
Along with choosing whom He would save, our God also chose how He would bring about their salvation.  In His eternal plan, God chose to send His son, Jesus, to the cross to gain the salvation of those He had chosen.  This eternal plan was set in place by God prior to the creation of the world.

For an individual to NOT have his name written in this book, is to say that they are an unsaved individual, remaining in a spiritually dead condition, and allowed to remain on the path they have chosen for themselves.  It is a path that leads to their eternal destruction.

Folks, the contents of the book of life, along with the 66 books of the Bible, play a very important part in the final judgment of lost mankind…

Rev 20:11-15 KJV

“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

(The absence of their names written in this book will result in their sentencing to the Lake of Fire for an eternity.  Their works will be judged according to the commandments found in the 66 books of the Bible.  This will result in a determination of the severity of their judgment throughout eternity.)

For those of us who are saved, may we praise and honor our Lord unceasingly for choosing us to salvation, giving His Son to die on our behalf and intervening in our lives and bringing us to Him.

For those who are not saved, may you see the great need of your life, to come before the Lord humbly, by faith, turning from your sin, realizing that Christ is your only hope of receiving spiritual life, forgiveness of sins and a wonderful eternity with Him.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 13:6 KJV – And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Here, John explains to us three areas that the political powers of this world speak ill against our Lord… His person, His worship place, and His people.

Satan, knows what he is doing.  When he uses the powers of this world to blaspheme God in these three areas, he does it for a purpose….

Satan’s main goal was to receive the glory and honor, and the position and abilities that are reserved for our Lord alone.  We have seen in previous devotionals, even following his defeat on the cross, he continues to work towards becoming “like God”.   When he leads the powers of this world to speak blasphemies, it is his attempt to “steal away” the praise that is due to our Lord.  This is why he desires the world’s powers to speak against the Lord, His place of worship and His people.

  1. Why does Satan desire God’s person to be blasphemed?

When others speak against the person of the Lord, they directly are taking away from the praise He deserves by convincing others our Lord is not worthy of our praise.  The evil speech takes from the Lord’s greatness and honor placing Him on a lower level than He deserves.

  1. Why does Satan desire God’s place of worship to be blasphemed?

When God is worshipped in a Scriptural way, His overwhelming greatness is clearly seen and His people unite themselves in the praise of that greatness.   When Satan leads others to speak against His place of worship, they are taking away from the importance and attractiveness of His worship.  This, in turn, aids in minimizing both the revelation of His greatness and the resulting worship and honor to a minimum.

  1. Why does Satan desire God’s people to be blasphemed?

God’s people are to be His reflection on earth.  When lost mankind look at His people, they are to see Christ in them.  When blasphemous speech causes others to think less of God’s people, it results in others thinking less of our Lord.  The reflection of Him is dirtied and His true glory is hidden from view.

May we all be on guard against the workings of Satan in our lives.  May we oppose his workings by frequently going to the Word of God to see His greatness;  regularly attending His place of worship to praise and honor Him; and live lives unspotted by the world to reveal His greatness to others.

1Pe 4:7 KJV – “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:6 KJV

(6)  And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

John sees the wild and dangerous beast from the sea (political powers of the world) speaking words of blasphemy against the Lord.   We have all heard of “blaspheming” the Lord, but what does that word really mean?

The words “blasphemy” and “blaspheme” in this verse comes from a Greek word that has several related definitions: 1.  “to speak ill of”; 2.  “to make a villain of”;   3.  “to defame”;   4.  “to be irreverent”;    5.  “to bitterly complain”

By looking at all these definitions, in our context, we can see that blasphemy involves…   “Taking away from the praise and honor that God deserves by speaking against Him”.

(In other words, blasphemous speech is irreverent speech that includes complaining about Him, fault-finding against Him, or defaming His person, character or works.)

Folks, let’s be honest… Normally, as Christians, we think that blasphemy is a sin that is reserved for those who do not have a relationship with the Lord.  We think that only those who are spiritually dead, and yet under the bondage of sin, are capable of such a heinous sin.

But if we stop and think about the definition of blasphemy, we can quickly come to the conclusion that it is a sin not reserved for the lost, but can be committed by God’s people as well.   Because we still possess a fallen sin nature within us, we are susceptible to taking honor away from our Lord.

How many times have we blasphemed our Lord in our thoughts, actions, or words?  Three examples of this would be the sins of impatience, doubting, and acceptance of sin.

Stop and think about it, when we become impatient with His workings in our lives, we are declaring to others that our Lord is slow to act, uncaring of those in need, or totally uninvolved in the lives of His people.  To give this impression to others is to blaspheme our Lord.

How about doubting the motives and methods of His workings?  By this we are telling others our Lord is not reliable, perhaps He is not faithful to His promises, or He makes mistakes in His workings among us.  Once again, this is clearly blasphemy.

The last sin we mentioned is that of acceptance of sin.   When we do not take a stand against sin in our lives and the lives of those around us, we are basically saying our Lord does not absolutely hate sin, therefore He is not perfectly holy, He has no perfect standard by which we are to live, nor is He perfectly just in His acts of discipline or judgment.  One more time… this is blasphemy.

Folks, we have just looked at three of MANY, MANY sins that when allowed in our lives, affects what others think about our Lord.  Anytime our actions or words make others think less of our Lord, or question His greatness, we are committing blasphemy against Him.  Also, when we allow our minds to go down paths that will lead us to think less of the Lord, we are blaspheming God to ourselves.

May we all be more conscious of the sin of blasphemy, and always ask ourselves these two questions…

“How will this action, speech or thought affects our own, or others, attitude about our Lord?…
Will any of us think more highly of Him, or will any of us begin to question His greatness and works among us?”

Col 3:8 KJV –  “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “it were wounded to death”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 13:3 KJV

(3)  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after this wild, dangerous beast.

In this section of Revelation, John is describing the “beast from the sea” which symbolizes the political kingdoms (governments) of this world throughout history.  In the context of John’s vision, he sees Satan using these governments to oppose the Lord and His people.

One of the seven heads of this beast, John sees a “deadly wound”.   The beast received this fatal wound at the cross of Christ…

Col 2:14-15 KJV – “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

Although the beast’s doom is sealed at the cross (and in that sense he was defeated then), he continues to be active until the second coming…

Eph 6:11-12 KJV – “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

It will be at the second coming of Christ that the beast will meet his ultimate end…. physical defeat and consignment to the Lake of Fire for an eternity…

Rev 19:11-21 KJV – “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”

May we all stand firmly in the faith, even in the face of persecution and oppression from the political powers of this world, knowing that Christ has already defeated them at Calvary.  No matter what it may look like now, we know that these powers are headed for downfall and their ultimate retribution, an eternity in the Lake of Fire.

SIH STSTA ICON

THE INTRODUCTION:

In chapter 12, we saw a defeated Satan’s continuing opposition against the Lord and His people.  Throughout the ages, Satan has used the political kingdoms of this fallen world as tools in an attempt to abuse, persecute and even martyr the people of God.

In the beginning portion of chapter 13, we will learn more about the POLITICAL kingdoms of this world as they afflict the people of God.  Then, in the following portions of chapter 13, we will be introduced to another tool that is used by Satan to oppress God’s people… the RELIGIOUS kingdoms of this world.  Finally, we will see the “mark” (major characteristic) of those who join the beast in its stand against the people of God.

Please note:  the following verses describe the “beast from the sea”.  This part of John’s vision is taken from Daniel 7:1-12

Rev 13:1-10 KJV

(1)  And I stood upon the sand of the sea,

John, as he stands on the seashore looks out at the sea.

and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.    (2)  And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

As John looks out over the sea, he sees a “beast” rise up out of the sea.  The word translated “beast” means a “wild, dangerous creature”.

This descriptions of this wild dangerous beast goes hand in hand with the prophecy found in Daniel 7:1-12:

The Name of Blasphemy Rev 13:1 N/A Each is Given the Title “Blasphemy” Rev 13:3-7 Each world kingdom follows its leader Satan, in opposing the people of God and blaspheming His name.

Notes to above chart:

(1) Seven world political empires throughout history: 1. Egypt, 2. Assyria, 3. Babylon, 4. Medo/Persia, 5. Greece, 6. Rome, 7. Diverse Kingdoms Appearing after the Roman Empire.
(2) A Sampling of the many ruling countries that came after the Roman empire: France, Germany, USA, Britain, Japan, China, Russia etc etc.
(3) All three animals, the Leopard, Bear, and Lion are mentioned as judgments from God upon men that do not recognize nor appreciate His mercies and blessings. (Hosea 13:5-8)

When put all together, we can see the kingdoms of this world, under Satan’s power and control, make up a very powerful, terrible “machine” that will seeks to totally wipe out the Lord and His people.  We see this take place throughout history where the nations of the world persecute God’s people, reject His Word, and speak against the very Lord that has blessed them and allowed them to exist.

Paul and John speak of many of the leaders of these governments and the spirit that motivates them as “the spirit of antichrist”.  In other words, they possess a desire to both oppose and replace Christ by receiving the worship that is due to Him.  This attitude can be seen throughout history in the lives of the Pharoahs of Egypt, the Roman Emperors, Nebuchadnezzar, and many many others including more recent leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, Kim Jong-il, etc etc.

These leaders use the power of their political kingdom to further their desires for self-exaltation among the people of the world….

1Jn 4:3-4 KJV
“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

2Th 2:3-5 KJV
“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?”

Please note that another type of the “antichrists” of this world are the false religious leaders who work in harmony with the political powers of the world to wreak havoc among the people of God.  These false religions and their leaders will be looked at in great detail in the next section of chapter 13…

1Jn 2:18-22 KJV
“Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”

(3)  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

John now sees one of the heads that received a deadly wound.  This wound that would eventually result in the death of this beast was Christ’s death on the cross (Col 2:14-15).  The head that received this wound was the sixth head, the Roman empire, the kingdom in existence at the time of the crucifixion.

Although the wound was deadly (would eventually cause the death of the political powers of the world).  This eventual death would be made plain for all to see at the second coming of Christ (Rev 19:17-21).   However, in between the crucifixion and the second coming we have the beast not outwardly affected by this wound.  In that sense, he was “healed” of the wound he had received.  To this day, the great power and wealth of the world kingdoms is coveted by the fallen world, and will only be shown for what they truly are when they are defeated by Christ at His second coming.

(4)  And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

In this fallen, humanistic world that is ruled by selfish lusts (1 Pet 2:11) enflamed by the enticements of Satan, we see a willingness to sacrifice all to pursue worldly power, riches and fame.   In doing so, they place their God, families and morals behind to receive this temporal, unsatisfying offerings of the world.

This is the root cause of the lost world’s submission and worship to the kingdoms of this world and their leader, Satan.

(5)  And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.   (6)  And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

The kingdoms of this world receive a mouth given to them by Satan.  It is with this mouth that the kingdoms can speak impressive, tremendous things which speak harmful things against Jehovah God.  Remember, this is the great work of the worldly kingdoms to mislead men and force men to join in the blasphemy of God Himself.

This is why “blasphemy” was written upon each and every one of its heads (world empires that make up all the political kingdoms throughout time Rev 13:1).  His role of Blasphemy would continue throughout all the time of opposition and abuse to God’s people.  This time period is described as “42 months”, “a time times and half a time”, and “1260 days”

The kingdoms of this world speak out against:

  1. his name – Who God is and what He has done for us.
  2. his tabernacle – The worship and meeting place of God on earth with man (tabernacle, temple, local church)
  3. them that dwell in heaven – God’s people, both alive and dead, who are citizens of heaven

All three of these are misrepresented, opposed, and spoken against by the governments of this world (Acts 17:32).

(7)  And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them:

The governments were not only given words but the ability to actively work in a blasphemous way against the Lord.  They were empowered by Satan, under the Lord’s allowance, to actively war against the people of God.  This would include judging, imprisoning, and even martyring them.

As the governments abuse the people of God, they may be physically overcoming them, but in actuality are spiritually bringing defeat upon themselves.

and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

These governments are given the authority to rule over all men.  This includes men of every family, language and citizenship.  This will culminate with a merging of all nations as they stand against Christ at His second coming. This will result in the final defeat of all the world’s kingdoms (Rev 19:18-20)

(8)  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

All of lost mankind (those who are not written in the Lamb’s book of life), during their lifetime on earth will worship the world’s kingdoms.  All lost mankind follows the doctrine of this, humanistic, world kingdoms.  As a result, they all work for the satisfaction of their fleshly desires and personal gain of worldly wealth, power and fame (Luke 16:8, Psa 17:14, Isa 55:2, Prov 27:20)

Book of life mentioned many times in Revelation:

  1. Rev 3:5 – overcomer’s names, eternally secure ones
  2. Rev 13:8 – no lost men in it, LJC work places men in the book.
  3. Rev 17:8 – names placed in it from foundation of the world
  4. Rev 20:12-15 – at final judgment used to determine destiny of men.
  5. Rev 21:27 – allows entrance into God’s presence in New Jerusalem
  6. Rev 22:19 – “his part” taken from book not “his name”. Other words, anyone who denies God’s Word by changing it is clearly lost and cannot be saved until he accepts God’s Word as the absolute truth without any change.

The Lamb’s book of life is a listing of all whom God has chosen to salvation, all for whom Christ has died, and all who were given the gift of faith in Christ as their Lord and Savior, in other words, it is all those who have received eternal life.

(9)  If any man have an ear, let him hear.

A call is now sent out.  Those who have been given spiritual ears to hear these warnings, need to pay close attention to them.  It is very important that we all understand the role of the kingdoms of this world and Satan’s leadership of them.  This should result in the Christian’s need to seek those things which are above, ignoring the treasures these kingdoms have to offer to us.

“By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”  (Heb 11:9-10 KJV)

“By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;”  (Heb 11:24-25 KJV)

(10)  He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.

This is the basic principle of divine retribution.  This is a Biblical principle that says that a just punishment for a certain sin is that sin returned upon the sinner (Rev 11:5, Gen 9:6, Isa 33:1, Jer 15:2, Jer 43:11, Matt 26:52)  This is what the kingdoms of this world have awaiting them.  Their abuse of God’s people will be returned upon their heads at His second coming. (Rev 19:11-21)

Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

This belief that the Lord will return the sins of the kingdoms back upon them is a source of the great patience and faith that is shown by believers who have been abused, tormented, afflicted and martyred by them.

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.  For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.”  (Heb 10:36-37 KJV)

CHRIST REVEALED:

As we saw the beast (kingdoms of this world) stand in opposition to Christ and His people, our Lord’s victory over this beast comes into full view.  Stop and think about it, if it were not for Christ’s victory over the beast, this terrible, ferocious beast would have total dominance over us and bring us to utter defeat.  But, based upon His victory won on the cross, He promises to us victory over the beast as well….

Joh 16:33 KJV – “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
1Jn 4:4 KJV – “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

May we all take the time to honor and praise our Lord for His work on the cross as He overcame Satan and the powers of this world, so that we might be victorious in Him.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

Mistreatment, persecution and opposition are to be expected as we live our lives in this fallen world.  This is because of our association with Christ.    But, although we face opposition, it is very important for us to realize that the victory has already been won by our Lord on the cross.   Although it may seem as if the powers of darkness are gaining the victory, by faith we understand that we have the ultimate victory in Christ.

May we all serve Him with renewed vigor knowing that the war has been won, and we are serving in the winning army of Christ.

Rev 19:11-21 KJV
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. “

May the Lord bless us as we seek to see Jesus in the pages of the book of Revelation.
