The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 18:4

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

The call for God’s people to be separated from the wicked works of Satan’s kingdoms is found throughout the Bible. The most clear, and familiar, passage on this subject is found in 2Co 6:14-17…

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?   And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?   And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.   Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”

Because we have God Himself (in the person of the Holy Spirit) dwelling within us we are to separate ourselves from unbelievers who would lead us into sinful lifestyles.   Folks, this applies not only to our choice of spouse, but also our choice of business associates, close friends, and anyone else who may be influential in our lives.

For some, the commands to “come out from among them, and be ye separate” and “touch not the unclean thing” when compared to the command to be “the lights of the world” (Matt 5:14) seem to contradict.  For Christians to be lights of the world, they must be in contact with the lost around them, setting the proper example through our actions, speech and personal testimonies of the Lord’s workings in our lives.  How can we be witnesses to the lost, if we are to be separated from them?

The key is a proper understanding of what “separated” means.   In our text, the Christian’s separation from the lost is described as abstaining from being “yoked” to the lost.  A yoke is a type of harness placed upon horses or oxen that join them together so that they might work in harmony as they perform different labors.   When applied to the saved and lost, it is implying that they are being joined together in a unity of motive, desires and actions.   When Christians are yoked to the lost in home, business, or leisure activities, there are bound to be conflicts and a huge temptation to compromise one’s stand for Christ.   This is why we are commanded to not be “unequally yoked” and yet still remain lights in a sin-darkened world.

What an awesome responsibility has been placed on the people of God.  We are to be among the lost and yet not to be one of them.  We are to share the precious gospel message, and show our love for them, without forming bonds with them that will cause us to partake of their sinful ways.

May we all take great care in our relationships with those that are lost, showing them our love and yet refraining from making relationships that will hinder our growth in the Lord.

Has The Lord Called and Chosen Us To Salvation? Are We Being Faithful To Him?

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 17:14 – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Christ’s people who join with Him at the Battle of Armageddon (Rev 19:11-16) are described as the “called, chosen and faithful”.  In these three titles we find a wonderful description of those who have been saved by His grace through the work of our Lord Jesus.

They are:

“the called” –
We are called to salvation through the gospel message and the Spirit’s intervention. (Romans 10:13-15, John 6:44)
We are called to follow Christ as the servants of Almighty God. (1 Peter 2:21)

“the chosen” –
We are chosen to salvation before the foundation of the world (James 2:5)
We were chosen to be holy and live lives of service to Him (1 Peter 2:9, Eph 2:10)

“the faithful” –
The result of our call to salvation and service, the saints of God live lives faithful to Him. Faithful service is proof of a genuine salvation experience. If no change of lifestyle takes place following a “salvation experience” there is no reason to believe it was a genuine work of God in the heart.  (James 2:17-18, 2 Corinth 5:17)

This is why all Christians are called upon to make sure the Lord has worked in their hearts and changed their life! (Please note they are not told to be certain they have made “a decision” for Christ…. they are told to be certain God has chosen them and called them to salvation and service!)  (2 Peter 1:10)

Folks, the Lord has graciously chosen to save us before the foundation of the world and called us to faithful service in His name, by His grace!

Eph 1:3-6 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:   having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

May we all love and appreciate our Lord for graciously choosing to save us when we did not deserve, nor could we earn, salvation from our sins.  In doing so, may we also come to understand that we are saved to serve our wonderful Lord out of a heart of appreciation and love knowing we owe Him our very lives…

Rom 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.   And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “he is Lord of lords, and King of kings:”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 17:14 – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

Jesus Christ is given the titles “Lord of Lords” and “King of Kings”.  In both of these titles we can see one basic principle brought forward… the great authority possessed by Christ to rule over all.

When Christ is said to be “Lord of Lords”, it is pointing to the fact that Christ is the Master of all the masters of this world.   The term “master” applies to the many types of authority that are not political in nature. Positions such as employers, heads of families, leadership in churches, are just a few of the types of influential positions of which this title is speaking.  Christ holds authority over all of these positions.

When Christ is called the “King of Kings”, it teaches us that Christ holds the ultimate authority over all the positions of political authority found in this world.  Some of these would include: Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Cabinet Holders, Legislators, Judges, Law Enforcement Officers, etc.  All of these, and many others, hold power that has been bestowed upon them by the governments of this world… Christ is King over all of them.

Please note the following passage:

Rom 13:1 – “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

All of the differing types of ruling powers found in our world are all delegated powers which ultimately come from the Lord Himself.   They are delegated powers and not inherent powers.

This teaches us that Christ holds the ultimate authority over all who possess these worldly powers.

Because Christ is the Ultimate Authority Holder over all this world’s powers, we can know three other basic truths …

  1. All of the worldly powers are obligated to obey the Lord as the supreme Ruler over them. They are not to exercise their authority freely but are limited to exercise their authority under the constraints of the will of our Lord.

Col 4:1 – “Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.”

  1. All of the worldly powers will someday stand before the Lord and give an account of how they exercised the authority they have been given. The instructions of their Lord are not simply suggestions of how they are to lead others, but are absolute commands to which they will be called into account at their final judgment.   The delegated authority they received from the Lord is the same as any other gift or talent that is to be used for His glory…

Luk 12:46-48 – “The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.”

  1. We are obligated to submit to the authorities that are over us, our masters and kings are exercising the very authority of God…

Rom 13:2 – “Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”

Folks, may we take these principles very, very seriously.  As authority holders, let us all exercise our delegated authority in a way that is pleasing to our Lord… we will answer to Him.   As those in submission to the authorities of this world, let us seek to always be in submission realizing, by doing this, we are obeying our Lord and Savior.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “perdition”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 17:8

“The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.”

Perdition.  We’ve all heard of it and most of us have a basic idea of what perdition is talking about.  Most of us know it is another descriptive title for the state of lost mankind following death and the final judgment.  Most of us also equate perdition with the Lake of Fire, the place reserved for the judgment of lost mankind throughout eternity.  Basically, it speaks of what those in darkness are facing for eternity.  This includes Satan, other fallen angels and lost mankind.

But what does “perdition” actually mean?  The word translated perdition in our text means “to ruin”, “to mar”, to damage permanently”, “to destroy”.   Here is what we can learn from this description…  Lost mankind will face perdition throughout eternity, in other words, they will be brought to absolute ruin, they will be continuously marred and damaged, which results in permanent destruction.

Think of it as a body that has died and is experiencing the process of decay.  It gradually enters into a worse and worse state, but never totally goes out of existence… or, likewise a fire that is constantly destroying its fuel but never fully consuming it.

This is the exact picture Christ Himself describes when He says the Lake of Fire is “Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”  (Mar 9:46)

Perdition is a continuous, never ending decay that consumes, but never causes a ceasing of existence or awareness. What a horrible thought for each one of us to consider.  Consignment to eternal perdition is what is awaiting all of lost mankind.   It will take place at the second coming of Christ when this sinful world is remade and lost mankind permanently taken from it…

2Pe 3:6-7 – “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”

As those who are saved by God’s grace, may we all see lost mankind’s desperate need of Christ for the salvation from the horrible wrath that is to come and then see our great need to take the gospel to them in compassion and love.

Rom 5:8-9 – “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

Revelation 17: Summary

SIH STSTA ICON

SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTER:

After looking at God’s wrath that falls against the two aspects of Satan’s kingdom in chapter 16, John now receives a new set of visions.  In chapter 17, this judgment is continued to be described by presenting to John the identity and characteristics of Satan’s kingdom…

  1. Judgment of Babylon 17:1-18
    1. The identity and characteristics of Satan’s Kingdoms 17:1-18
      1. Scarlet Beast (Satan’s Political Kingdom) 1-3
      2. Woman (Satan’s Religious Kingdom) 4-6
  • The Mystery Of The Woman and The Beast Revealed – 7-18

SUMMARY OF EACH DIVISION OF CHAPTER:

  1. Revelation 17:1-6 – The Woman And The Scarlet Colored Beast

In this section of John’s vision, the woman is described.  This woman symbolizes the religious aspects of Satan’s kingdoms.  This involves the false religions and false teachers that can be found in the world around us.

She is given the title of “Great Whore”, expressing her sinfulness, seductive nature, shamelessness and also her unfaithfulness to the Lord and His Word.  She is described as sitting on “many waters” speaking of the great authority and control that she exercises over the masses of lost humanity.  The sins she causes in the midst of mankind are described as fornication and drunkenness.  This speaks of acts of uncleanness that flow from sin natures that are left to run uncontrolled in the lives of the lost.

John is taken to the “wilderness” to receive this vision of the woman and the beast.  The term “wilderness” is describing a desert, the place where no life can be found.  This is the type of area where this Satanic duo is found and prospers, in the hearts and lives of those who are destitute of spiritual life.  Also lifelessness is the end result of those who follow the messages and dictates of these kingdoms.  Her close relationship with beast (the political powers of Satan) is shown by her riding upon it.

The angel begins a look at the scarlet beast.  Its color reveals the bloodshed and death that was inflicted upon God’s people by the oppressive nations of the world.  Its chief end is to speak evil of (blaspheme) the true God.  It’s seven heads are symbolic of the seven political world empires that have existed prior to John and will exist following John’s death until the second coming of Christ.

The woman is described as being dressed in the colors and adornments of royalty and wealth, picturing her great attractiveness in the eyes of lost mankind.  Her temptations are pictured by a gold cup being offered to mankind which is filled with sinful abominations.  She is given a series of four titles: “Mystery”, “Babylon The Great”, “The Mother of Harlots”, The Mother of Abominations of the Earth”.  From these we can learn the following truths…

“Mystery” – the true character of this woman is known to the saints of the Lord, but unknown to the lost who have been deceived.

“Babylon the Great” – The message of Satan’s false religions are worthless to man and only causes confusion.

“The Mother of Harlots” – She produces great sins among men by seducing lost men to share her sinful acts and teachings and actively seek her preservation.

“The Mother of … Abominations of the Earth” – She also produces great abominations through seduction  She seduces lost men, they, in turn, begin committing great acts that God hates.

Finally, she is shown as being drunk with the blood of the saints, picturing the great martyrdom that is committed at her hands and the enjoyment she receives from the taking of life of God’s people.

John then says that he “admired” her telling us after he had studied her, he was dumbfounded, he was amazed at how powerful, deceitful, and seductive she was.

  1. Revelation 17:7-18 – The Identity And Characteristics Of The Beast And Woman

The angel begins to describe the beast with a three-fold description: “thou sawest not and is not” – speaking of the beast’s existence in the kingdoms prior to, and following, John’s life on earth;   “shall ascend out of the bottomless pit”

The origin of this beast is Satanic, sinful and deserving of divine punishment;  “and go into perdition”… the beast’s destiny is destruction and absolute ruin.  The greatness of this beast causes mankind to be amazed and wonder at it.

The beast is described as “the beast that was, and is not, and yet is” and later as seven kings that of them, “five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come”.  These both speak of the existence of the world empires in relation to John’s life.  “Was” and “fallen” – the world empires that had existed prior to John’s day; “is not” and “not yet come” – the world empires that are yet to exist following John’s day;  “and yet is” and “one is”– the world empires that existed in John’s day (Rome).

The woman being pictured as sitting on the seven mountains reminded John of the World Empire that existed in his day…. The Roman Empire.

The ten horns on the seventh head of the beast symbolically represents the variety of kingdoms that would rise to world powers, be short lived, and never be allowed to rule over the entire world.  They would all exist following John’s life on earth.  It would be these nations that would be in existence at Christ’s second coming and unify to oppose Christ at His coming.  This is the eighth kingdom being talked about by the angel.  The angel assures John that even though the nations will unite to oppose Christ, Jesus will be the ultimate Victor over the united foe.

The waters upon which the woman is seen sitting pictures the mass of fallen mankind under her influence.

Although both aspects of Satan’s kingdoms are under Satan’s control, the Lord places in their hearts to fight among themselves.  Throughout history we have seen the political powers of the world go to war against the false religions of this world seeking, unsuccessfully to destroy them. This would be done through putting to death those who held to a particular religious faith.

Finally the angel describes the woman as “that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth.”  The great city is speaking of Babylon (vs 5), the seat of rebellion and pride of mankind.  She is the one that exercises the ultimate control over the political powers of this world.  The false religions of the world, in many ways, rule over the political kingdoms of this world.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT IN THIS SERIES?:

Beginning in chapter 17: we have seen the recipient of God’s wrath, the kingdoms of Satan presented in great detail. Both the characteristics and identity of both aspects of Satan’s kingdom are brought into view.  In the next section of our study, chapter 18, will present various warnings for mankind to separate themselves from the kingdom of Satan…

  1. The Results of Babylon’s Judgment 18:1-24
    1. Victory Announcement 1-3
    2. Invitation for God’s People To Separate Themselves 4-20
  • Millstone Cast Upon Sea… the Final Destruction Of Babylon 21-24

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the bottomless pit”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 17:8

“The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.”

The “bottomless pit”, is a special name given to “the Lake of Fire”, the place where God’s eternal wrath falls upon lost mankind.  This title stands out because it is a title that is only used in the book of Revelation.  Why would the “Lake of Fire” be described symbolically as “the Bottomless Pit”?

The Greek word from which we get the title “Bottomless Pit” is “abussos”, or transliterated,
“the abyss”.  It literally means “the depthless shaft” or “the deep” which described in the New Testament times, the unmeasurable depths of the sea.

What can we learn about the place of eternal torment from this title?

  1. It is bottomless, in the sense it can never be filled up. It will be able to hold all of lost mankind.  This is why it is described in Provs 27:20, as being never “satisfied”
  1. It is very deep, it cannot be measured, we can never come to understand all there is to know about this horrible place of punishment. His wrath extends beyond our understanding. This is why His judgments are described as “a great deep” in Psalms 36:6
  1. There is no security, strength, or foundation that can be found in the Lake of Fire. The symbolism is someone who can never find firm footing but is eternally falling out of their control.  This is explained for us in Prov 10:25, where the lost are pictured as swept up in a “whirlwind” while the righteous are “an everlasting foundation”.

These are three basic, eternal, truths we can see in the title “bottomless pit”.

Let’s take a look at all the references where this title is used:

(Rev 9:1-2, 11) – This text teaches us that “the star”, Christ, holds the absolute, sovereign, authority over the powers of darkness.  These powers of darkness are said to proceed out of the bottomless pit helping us to understand that they, like all the inhabitants of the pit, are deserving of God’s judgments and willfully oppose Christ and His work.

(Rev 11:7) – Here, the powers of the earthly governments are described as coming from the pit and martyring God’s people.  Their proceeding from the pit, once again, describes their willful rebellion and deserving of God’s wrath.  They are seen as coming from the place where all sinful beings will dwell for an eternity in torments.

(Rev 17:8) – This same beast, symbolizing the earthly governments, is seen as both preceding from (“the bottomless pit”) and being assigned to eternal wrath (“perdition”, or damnation, destruction).

(Rev 20:1-3) – In this final section of Scripture, we see Satan, himself, bound and cast into the bottomless pit to face God’s wrath.  He will be released following the first stage of eternity, the 1000 year reign, to face judgment and then be assigned to face God’s wrath for an eternity.

(Please notice that the title “bottomless pit” not only describes the wicked’s eternal state, but also in many cases, their origin.   We all know that Satan, the fallen angels (demons), the political powers of the world and lost mankind all find their origin in God, who is the Creator of all.

However, these sinful characters can also be said to originate from the “bottomless pit” in the sense that they are a part of all creation that have rebelled against All-mighty God, actively oppose His workings in the world, and are destined to face His eternal wrath.   In that sense the “bottomless pit” has given birth to all of them.)

May we all make certain that our birthplace and citizenship is in heaven (Eph 2:19-20) and that our origin is not found in the bottomless pit….

2Pe 1:10-11 – “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:  For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

SIH STSTA ICONTHE TEXT:

THE INTRODUCTION:

In the previous chapter, we have seen the contents of trumpet 7, in other words bowls 1-7,  which spoke of God’s wrath being poured out upon Satan’s kingdoms at the second coming of Christ.   As bowl seven was poured out, we saw the wrath of God being brought to completion and the kingdoms of Satan totally destroyed.

Now, in chapters 17: and 18:, we see a detailed look at this kingdom that has just been destroyed…

  1. In chapter 17: we take a step back and review the identity and characteristics of Satan’s kingdom. In this text, we have the two aspects of Satan’s kingdom symbolized by the two main characters being presented to us… “the Great Whore” (the religious aspects of Satan’s kingdom) and “the Scarlet Colored Beast” (the political aspects of Satan’s kingdom).

[Please note Revelation 13: where the “Great Whore” in this passage symbolized as the “Beast from the Earth”, while the “Scarlet Beast”  is symbolized as the “Beast from the Sea”.  This description also links these to a description of Satan as the scarlet dragon with 7 heads and 10 horns in Rev 12:]

  1. In chapter 19: we will see warnings that are given to mankind living now to depart from these kingdoms that are destined to fall under the hand of Almighty God.

A brief outline of the coming chapters:

Chapter 17: The Identity and Characteristics of Satan’s Kingdom

17:1-6 – The Woman and The Scarlet Beast Introduced
17:7-17 – The Scarlet Beast In Detail
17:18 – The Woman In Detail

Chapter 18:  The Warnings To Depart From Satan’s Kingdom

18:1-3 – Announcement Of Babylon’s Fall
18:4-8 – Warning To God’s People
18:9-10 – Warning To Kings
18:11-17a – Warning To Merchants
18:17b-20 – Warning To Mariners
18:21-24 – Angel With The Millstone

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Rev 17:7-18 KJV

(7)  And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

The angel now comforts John telling him that the two symbolic characters of this disturbing vision (the woman and the beast) will be explained in detail.

First, the angel explains the scarlet colored beast….

(8)  The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition:

Keep in mind the beast is a symbol of the earthly political kingdom of Satan.  It is symbolic of the seven great world empires:

  1. Egypt;
  2. Assyria;
  3. 3.Babylon;
  4. Medo-Persia;
  5. Greece;
  6. Rome;
  7. The Variety of World Powers following Rome.

The angel begins to describe the beast with a three-fold description:

  1. “thou sawest not and is not” ….

The kingdoms not in existence when Rome ruled the world in John’s day:

  1. prior to John – Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece,
  2. following John – Variety of World Powers following Rome.

These are the political kingdoms that John never “saw” (experienced) because they did not exist in John’s day.

The political kingdom of Satan is cyclical in nature.   One rises to power, falls and another one takes it place.  They are all a part of Satan’s political kingdom, which embodies all the nations of the world.  His kingdom simply takes different forms as each individual nation ascends to power.

  1. “shall ascend out of the bottomless pit”….

The origin of this beast is Satanic, sinful and deserving of divine punishment.  Keep in mind, the first nations of the world came into existence at the Tower of Babel.  The nations were formed when mankind was divided into separate locations on earth as the Lord confused their languages.  This was done as a judgment against their pride, selfish and rebellion against the Lord. (Gen 11:1-9).  This is the very beginnings of Satan’s political kingdom of this world.

  1. “and go into perdition”…

The beast’s destiny is destruction and absolute ruin (“perdition”).  Even though it is empowered by Satan and very dreadful in alliance with the false religions of the world, this beast was already defeated at the cross (Col 2:14-15). His final end will be eternal destruction from the face of the Lord (Rev 19:20).

and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

The lost of this world will find themselves gazing in amazement and admiration at the greatness and majesty of the political kingdoms of this world.

The lost are described as “whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world”.  This refers to the book of life that was written in eternity past through the divine counsels of Almighty God.  This book contains the names of those who were foreordained to come to faith in Christ.  This results in their justification before God; their life lived in holiness and service to Him; and their adoption into His family …

Eph 1:4 – “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,”

The beast is described as “the beast that was, and is not, and yet is”.  This refers to the many world empires this kingdom represents:

  1. “was” – the world empires that had existed prior to John’s day (Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece)
  2. “is not” – the world empires that are yet to exist following John’s day (Variety of World Powers following Rome)
  3. 3  “and yet is” – the world empires that existed in John’s day (Rome)

During all of these empires the beast existed because all of these kingdoms were a part of the beast.

(9)  And here is the mind which hath wisdom.

This is the thinking of those who possess Godly wisdom.  This is insight into the true character, identity and nature of this beast that comes from God Himself.

The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

(Note: Please remember, prior to this, the woman was seen sitting upon the scarlet beast (Rev 17:3).  This helps us to understand that the mountains and the beast are two symbolic characters that speak of the same political kingdom of Satan.   The seven heads of the beast are representative of the same world empires as these seven mountains.)

The woman is seen setting upon seven mountains.  In John’s day the coins of the Roman government were embossed with the picture of a woman sitting upon seven mountains.  The seven mountains on the coin were representative of the seven mountains upon which Rome sat:

  1. Palatine
  2. Aventine
  3. Caelian
  4. Esquirine
  5. Uiminal
  6. Quirinal
  7. Capitoline

This pointed John directly to the Roman Empire, the current reigning World Empire.  He had just pointed John’s sight to the political kingdoms of the world.  However, the angel then went further explaining the beast was not limited to this current world empire, but was representative of all the world empires of all time …

(10)  And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

This beast, in its entirety, symbolized seven kings (or the kingdoms over which they ruled, the seven world empires):

  1. “five are fallen” – the world empires existing prior to John’s day (Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece)
  2. “one is” – the world empire existing in John’s day (Rome)
  3. “the other is not yet come” –– the world empires existing future to John’s day (Variety of World Powers after Rome)
  4. “he must continue a short space” – this is speaking of the seventh king (the Variety of World Powers future to John). He explained to John that these future kingdoms will not exist into eternity.  Although it is described as coming last in time, with no other world kingdoms to replace it, that does not imply it will be eternal.

Each of the individual kingdoms will only have world dominance a short time and never able to completely rule the world.  As a whole, this aspect of Satan’s political kingdom would only last from the end of the kingdom in control at Christ’s first coming (Rome) to the second coming of Christ.  This very time period is described as a single period of time (Heb 1:1-2, Acts 2:16-17) throughout the Word of God.  This same time period is also described as being short, coming quickly (John 4:35, James 5:8, Rev 22:20 etc)

(11)  And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The beast himself (a combination of all world nations):

  1. “is the eighth” – this beast, the combination of all nations, will have a turn being a unified world empire. This takes place following the varied rule of the nations making up the seventh kingdom. This will take place at the Battle of Armageddon when all the nations of the world will unified as a singular world power under their own authority…

Rev 19:19 – “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.”

(Notice how all the unitied kingdoms are described in this text… “the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies” … this is the eighth kingdom that the angel is speaking about.  It will come into existence as Christ comes in the clouds with His spiritual nation, spiritual Israel (all saved makind in glorified bodies).

(Also please note: there will still be “kings” and “armies”, they will simply be united in effort against Christ.  They will not be melded into just one nation with one ruler.  They will continue to possess their own national identity, but be united fighting as one world power.)

  1. “And is of the seven” – this beast is made up of all the seven world empires throughout history.
  1. “goeth into perdition” – this beast is headed for total destruction.

(12)  And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

The ten horns represent the ten kings (kingdoms) that will come to power after John’s day.  This is the many varied nations that will become world powers.

These many, varied nations will take exist following the Roman empire and leading up to Christ’s second coming.  This is why it is believed these ten horns are located on the beast’s seventh head.  It is the seventh head only that is said to be coming into existence following the Roman empire of John’s day.

These many varied nations will hold individually the position of world powers for a short period of time.  They will aspire to achieve true World Empire status, ruling over all the known world, but will never fully achieve their aspirations.

(13)  These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.  (14)  These shall make war with the Lamb,

Leading up to Christ’s second coming, all of these aspiring world kingdoms will become united in purpose and goal.  They will willingly join forces with all the other nations and put all of their efforts towards a unified goal.  This goal is to go to war against Christ and defeat Him at His second coming.

Please note the term “These”.  This helps us to understand that these nations are still identified as individual nations, but they are united in goals.  They still have individual kings, but these kings are leading them to join up with all the other nations. (see vs 11 and Rev 19:19)  In the future, the nations will always have individual identities.  They will be individual nations fighting as one.  Nowhere in the Bible do we read of the nations literally unifying to the point they will no longer have national identities, becoming one literal world nation.

and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings:

At His second coming Christ, the Lamb, will subdue and prevail over them.  He holds the dominating authority and strength over them.  His predominate strength and authority are revealed to us in the titles “Lord of lord and King of kings”

and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

The army accompanying Him will be made up of His spiritual nation of Israel, the Israel of God, which is made up of all believers of all time.  More on this Battle of Armageddon in Rev 18: and 19:.

(15)  And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

The waters that this woman sits on, spoken of in vs 1, symbolizes the multitudes of lost people on the earth.   This includes all the lost from each race, nationality, language and family.

(16)  And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

Although they work together for mutual benefit, the political kingdoms of the world are ultimately controlled by the false religions of the world.  This is shown by the woman riding the beast in vs 3.

People will rebel against or oppose political authorities at the request of their false religious authorities.  They would act thinking they are pleasing their god as opposed to pleasing the human authorities over them.  The reverse is not true.  This makes the false religions of this world a constant threat to the existence and well-being of the political kingdoms of this world.   This is why the political systems of the fallen world hate the religious systems of the fallen world.

This can be seen in the many differing types of persecution of opposing religious systems by the world’s nations.   These types of persecution include:

  1. “make her desolate and naked” – economic and persecution of their members forcing them out of their religion.
  2. “shall eat her flesh” – feeding their members to wild animals, a common practice in the times of John
  3. “burn her with fire” – burning her members at the stake was also a common practice in the times of John.

This principle seems to be greatly magnified at the second coming of Christ.  The nations of the world will understand they have been misled by these false religions and now must go to war against God and receive His wrath due to the woman’s false teachings.  This will cause great hatred in their hearts and a desire to bring her to utter destruction.

Please note that the false religious systems are not listed as being a motivating, warring, nor important, character at the moment of the kingdoms unifying and soon defeat at the hand of the Lord…

Rev 19:19 –  “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.”

However, she is mentioned in the very next verse as being present, in the symbolism of the false prophet, emphasizing her role in misleading the people to follow the political kingdoms to their defeat.  In this passage, she is sharing in defeat at the hands of our returning Lord…

Rev 19:20 – “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

(17)  For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

All of this “in-fighting” between the two kingdoms of Satan take place under the Sovereign hand of Almighty God.  He is the One that controls the nations allowing them to abuse, persecute and attempt to destroy themselves.

God has worked in their hearts and minds in three ways:

  1. “to fulfil his will” – to do what God has decreed
  2. “to agree” – to willfully perform the dictates of His sovereign will
  3. “ to give their kingdom unto the beast” – to submit to the leadership of the unified nations of the world.

All of these work up to their utter defeat, which brings fulfillment to the end time prophecies of the Lord

(18)  And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

As described before, the false religions of the world control the political kingdoms of the world.

This is symbolized in three ways in this chapter:

  1. The whore riding the beast in vs 3
  2. The woman sitting on the seven mountains in vs 9
  3. The whore sitting on the waters in vs 15

All of these symbolize the same truth.  The false religions of the world, in many ways, rule over the political kingdoms of this world.

Note the woman is described as “that great city”.  This points us back to her title, “Babylon the Great” in vs 5.  Babylon, the symbolic capital of the evil religious kingdom, exercises authority over the political powers of the world and lost mankind in general. She is why the nations of the lost world submits to the political authorities of the world and, ultimately, unite to do battle against Christ.   See verses 3, 5, 9, 15, and 16 for much more detail.

CHRIST REVEALED:

Rev 17:14 – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

In this verse, we can see Christ presented as the victorious Lamb , the Lord of lords and King of kings.

Normally, when we think of Christ as the Lamb, we think of Him as the suffering, humble, sinless, Savior who unjustly died on the cross bringing salvation to His people.   However, in this passage that same Lamb is shown as being victorious Lord and King gaining the ultimate victory over the powers of darkness at the Battle of Armageddon.

Why would Christ, as He leads His people to victory, be symbolized as a Lamb?

The key is to understand WHEN the victory over the powers of darkness was actually gained.  Christ had won the victory long before Armageddon… Armageddon was simply the outward display that proved the victory had been won.

So when was the victory actually won?

This is where Christ, as the Lamb, comes into our view.  Christ’s victory over the powers of darkness took place at the cross.  Our humble, sinless, suffering Savior won the victory at His death.   Because of this, it is only fitting that He be shown as a Lamb as the His victory over darkness is clearly shown to mankind.

This was a victory He had won as the Lamb of God hanging on a cross defeating the powers of darkness and bringing salvation to those He loved…

Heb 2:14-15 – “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;  And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

May we all remember that Christ has already won for us the victory over the powers of Satan and his dark kingdoms of this world.  He overcame them so that we might be overcomers with Him….

1Jn 4:3-4 – “And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.   Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Because we are overcomers in Christ, we can rejoice in the midst of trials, heartaches, times of loss and when face with seeming impossible situations.  How can this be?  We know we will ultimately be given the victory over this world and all the issues it may hold for us.

We are His redeemed… He has gained the victory over this world … and will deliver us from her grasp someday…

Psa 97:9-10 – “For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.  Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “upon her forehead was a name written,… THE MOTHER OF …The ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH”

SIH TOTT ICON

Rev 17:5 KJV –

“And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

In this week’s series of devotions we will be concentrating on the false religions (and their false messengers) that are sent into this world.  They are symbolized by the character that John had seen … “I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast” (otherwise described as “the Great Whore”).

Our devotions for this week will concentrate on the 5 different titles given to this character….

  1. “The Great Whore”; 2. “Mystery”; 3. “Babylon The Great”;     4. “The Mother Of Harlots”;     5. “The Mother Of… Abominations Of The Earth”

In our devotion for this morning, we will be looking at the title “The Mother Of The Abominations Of The Earth”.   Not only do the false religions of this world produce spiritual harlotry, shown to us in the title “The Mother Of Harlots”, but they also produce the abominations that exist in the world around us.

What does it mean when the Bible speaks of an “abomination”?  Both the Hebrew and Greek words from which we get abomination holds the same meaning…
They describe something that: “is abhorred”, “is disgusting”, “is revolting”.
The root meaning of the Hebrew word is “to utterly loathe”
The root meaning of the Greek word is “to stink” (referring to things such as a decaying corpse).

These meanings help us to come to a clear understanding of what is meant by an abomination in God’s sight.  It is something that He hates, He is disgusted by it, it stinks in His nostrils.

It is important for our study this morning to note that many, but not all, of the times it is used the word “abomination” is used in connection to the sin of idolatry. This is the “product” of the religious kingdom of Satan.

The false teachings, the unscriptural practices, the selfish motives, the lies, the deceptions, and the evil fruits of sin that thrive in the idolatrous religions of this world, are an abhorrent stench in the nostrils of our Lord.  These religious kingdoms turn men from the truth of His Word to lies.  This leads men astray resulting in their rejection of Christ and eternal separation from Him.

May we all follow the wise advice of the Apostle Paul who said….

2Ti 3:13-15 KJV – “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.   But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;   And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “upon her forehead was a name written,… THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS”

Rev 17:5 KJV –

In our devotion for this morning, we will be looking at the title “The Mother Of Harlots”.

Once again, just like all of the titles for Satan’s religious kingdom, we find “The Mother of Harlots” to be very fitting indeed.  The idea of “harlot” (prostitute) contains a few basic ideas:

  1. sinful unions – joining with the political kingdoms of the world, other sinful religions, and lost mankind to stand in opposition to the Lord, His Word, and His works. (Rev 19:19)
  1. seduction / temptations – one of the key tools used by these false religious systems is a seductive message that draws lost men into their membership. Promises of a glorious afterlife, “the power of positive thinking”, no hell or judgment for sins, man’s ability to save themselves, among others, are seductive messages appealing to lost mankind.  (2 Tim 4:3-4)
  1. unfaithfulness – turning from the truths of God’s Word, taking from them, adding to them, and denying them are hallmarks of their unfaithfulness to the Lord and His Word. They seek to lead men away from the Lord through their teachings and practices. (Prov 5:22-23) In all of this they have shown themselves to be unfaithful by forgetting the Lord and trusting in falsehood (Jer 13:25)

The false religious kingdom of Satan is said to be the “mother” of harlots.  This tells us that all of her “children” (the individual teachings, religions, assemblies, and folowers that she produces) are all harlots which share in these three characteristics.

May we never be as the Jewish nation that was found guilty of spiritual whoredom by following the false religions of the day.

Hos 4:12 KJV – My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

One of the great desires for every Christian should be to always be found spiritually pure in God’s sight and to encourage others to do the same.

Col 1:28-29 KJV – Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:  Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “upon her forehead was a name written,… BABYLON THE GREAT ”

  1. “The Great Whore”; 2. “Mystery”; 3. “Babylon The Great”;     4. “The Mother Of Harlots”;     5. “The Mother Of… Abominations Of The Earth”

In our devotion for this morning, we will be looking at the title “Babylon The Great”.

Throughout the Bible, the city of Babylon represents opposition and rebellion against the Lord.   Babylon traces its beginning back to the Tower of Babel.  It was there at the Tower of Babel that we see the first ORGANIZED attempt by mankind to oppose God and find their security and peace within themselves. (Gen 11:1-9)

The false religious activities in this world are centered around these principles as well.  Beginning at Eden, Satan has been continually seeking to pervert the Word of God as an act of rebellion against the Lord.

Satan set the pattern for this abuse in Eden when he attempted to pervert God’s Word in three ways:

  1. Taking the Word out of context by ignoring a portion of it

God said…“Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it” (2:16-17a)

Satan took this out of context and said…“Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (3:1)

  1. Adding to The Word

God said… “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (2:16-17)

Satan added to this quote and said… “Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” (3:3)

  1. Contradicting The Word

God said… “in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (2:17)

Satan contradicted it and said… “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:”

Folks these are the three ways that Satan perverted the Word in Eden and it is the way he continues to pervert God’s Word within the realm of false religious teachings today…

  1. Taking things out of context (by ignoring/deleting portions of it)
  2. Adding to it
  3. Contradicting it

These three methods successfully brought sin into the world and led Adam and Eve to rebel against the Lord  So, too, throughout the ages Satan has successfully used these methods to create every false doctrine that exists.

May we all be on guard against allowing these errors to influence our understanding of truth.  For those of us who are given the responsibility to teach His Word, may we all be on guard against allowing these errors to slip into our teachings.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 17:5 KJV –

In our last devotion we studied the title “The Great Whore”.  In our devotion for this morning, we will be looking at the title “Mystery”.

The word translated “Mystery” here does not simply describe something that is unknown. It actually means something that is “known to the initiated, but unknown to all others”.   In other words, the character, motivations, abilities and workings of this woman sitting upon the beast is unknown by many, however, known by some people.

If this is the case, the next questions we should ask are … who are the people that are “in the know?” And “who are the people that are ignorant of these truths about her?”  The Bible gives us the answer to these questions.

In 2 Corinthians 2:11, we are told that Christians “are not ignorant of his (Satan’s) devices”.

Whereas, lost mankind in 2 Corinthians 4:4, are said to be “blinded” by “the god of this world” (Satan).  This blinding involves a blindness towards Christ, His work and His truth, as well as towards Satan, His devices, and His teachings of error.

As Christians we all should understand how Satan uses his earthly religious kingdom of error to mislead and ensnare lost mankind.  Also, we all should understand the need to:

1.  RECOGNIZE her teachings

1Jn 4:1-3 KJV –

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.   Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:   And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”

2.   SEPARATE ourselves from it

2Jn 1:9-11 KJV –

“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.   If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:    For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

Rom 16:17-18 KJV –

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.   For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”

3.   and ACTIVELY REVEAL AND OPPOSE them using the truths of God’s Word….

Eph 4:14-15 KJV –

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”
May we all firmly stand against the workings of Satan, as he uses the false teachings and religious systems of this world to oppose the work of Christ.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “the Great Whore… I saw a woman sit upon the scarlet colored beast”

SIH STSTA ICONRev 17:1, 3 KJV –

“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:….”
“So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.”

“The Great Whore”, “Mystery”, “Babylon The Great”, “The Mother of Harlots”, and, finally, “The Mother Of Abominations Of The Earth”

The first title we find is “The Great Whore” in other words…. “the Exceedingly Fearful Prostitute”. What a very powerful, expressive name for the false teachers that exist among us.

When we think about a prostitute we think about:
1 a person who seduces others, appealing to their carnal natures, to commit unclean acts.
2. a person who, for purely personal benefit, dirties that which is pure and good (relations within a martial union).
3. a person who publically displays their sinfulness without shame or remorse.

What can we learn about false religious ministries through this vivid imagery?

1. False teachers and religions rely upon seducing others to become their followers. They take the truths of God and pervert them in an effort to lead men away from the true God and become followers of false gods. They are inspired and empowered by Satan making them very dangerous adversaries to the cause of Christ.

Mat 23:15 – “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.”

2. False teachers and religions are based entirely upon selfishness. Their message and practices will only lead to the destruction of their followers. Their only motives are to dishonor the Lord, oppose His work and message, and gain wealth and authority through the possession of multitudes of followers.

Php 3:18-19 KJV – “(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)”

3. False teachers and religions are shameless publically appearing to be spiritual while, in truth, are ungodly, spiritually dead, servants of Satan.

Mat 23:27-29 KJV – “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,”

Folks, this is why we will be looking at the false teachers and religions around us this week. Just from this set of descriptions we can see how tremendously dangerous their ministry is to lost mankind, the cause of Christ and the people of God.

As Christians may we remember two important principles as we enter our study this week…

1. We have the responsibility to recognize them and avoid them…

Rom 16:17-18 KJV – “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”

2. The Lord WILL BE the ultimate victor over all who oppose Him. He has already won the victory on the cross and is not simply waiting to manifest that victory at His second coming…

Col 2:13-15 KJV – “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

Rev 20:10 KJV – “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

May we all strive to oppose the false teaching around us and a void their deceitful seductions… after all, we can be absolutely certain that there is coming a day they will fall at the hands of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ!

Revelation 17:1-6 “The Woman and The Scarlet Colored Beast”

SIH STSTA ICONTHE TEXT:

Rev 17:1-6 KJV

(1)  And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
(2)  With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
(3)  So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
(4)  And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
(5)  And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
(6)  And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

2.   In chapter 19: we will see warnings that are given to mankind living now to depart from these kingdoms that are destined to fall under the hand of Almighty God.

A brief outline of the coming chapters:

Chapter 17: The Identity and Characteristics of Satan’s Kingdom

17:1-6 – The Woman and The Scarlet Beast Introduced
17:7-17 – The Scarlet Beast In Detail
17:18 – The Woman In Detail

Chapter 18:  The Warnings To Depart From Satan’s Kingdom

18:1-3 – Announcement Of Babylon’s Fall
18:4-8 – Warning To God’s People
18:9-10 – Warning To Kings
18:11-17a – Warning To Merchants
18:17b-20 – Warning To Mariners
18:21-24 – Angel With The Millstone

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Rev 17:1-6 KJV

The Woman and the Beast Introduced:

(1)  And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me,

One of the seven angels that had just delivered the seven vials of God’s wrath, comes to John and reveals details about the target of the vials of wrath, Satan’s kingdom…

Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore

Remember, the judgment of the great whore, has just been fulfilled.  The angel now wants to review what John has just seen taking place.  He is doing this to clarify in John’s mind the wicked character of Satan’s kingdom (chapter 17) and the need for mankind to separate themselves from that kingdom before it is too late (chapter 18)

Who is this “great whore”?

We will see that she is a picture of the religious kingdoms of Satan…

  1. She is unfaithful to the Lord,
  2. she is guilty of seducing men away from the truth to error,
  3. she is guilty of committing spiritual fornication (spiritual unclean unions with the world)
  4. she is guilty of spiritual adultery (spiritual unfaithfulness to those she has been united)
  5. she is shameless and publically seeking others to join her in sinfulness
  6. etc etc etc

This is why she is symbolized as a “whore”.

These descriptions will be taken from Isa 23:15-17, Jere 3:1-10, 4:30, 5:6-7, 51:6-8, Ezek 16:15-34,  Zechariah 5: etc.

that sitteth upon many waters:

Satan’s religious powers are said to be sitting on many waters which symbolizes her great influence and sway over masses of unsettled humanity.  The lost are her “throne”.  although rejected and opposed by God, in these vast numbers of lost humanity that she receives authority and strength.  She is both exalted over and in control of lost mankind.

Think of all the false religions of the world and the amount of lost humanity that are under their authority.  These lost people are like a sea tossed to and fro with untrue teachings , ungrounded,  and constantly wavering in error.

(Please keep in mind that when the Bible pictures false religions these include not only those groups who lead men to worship a false god, but also humanism, atheism, mammonism, and other belief structures that lead to worship/submission of men or other idols found in this fallen world).

(2)  With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,

The political authorities of the world create unlawful unions with the religious kingdoms of Satan.  We see this all the time with national religions.  They then work together hand in hand.  The national religion encourages its followers to submit to the laws of the land, while the political powers threaten punishment to those who teach in opposition to the national religion.

“fornication” comes from a Greek word for “uncleanness” and is the root of the title “whore” as well.  Both of these emphasize to us that these unions are sinful unions, not made under the Lord’s approval and authority, just as physical fornication is a sexual union that takes place without the Lord’s approval or authority.

and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

Because of this unlawful union between the political and religious kingdoms of Satan, we see all of lost mankind seduced to take part in this illicit union as well.  They come to these two great kingdoms and join with them, creating a union that displeases the Lord and commits heinous acts of uncleanness in the world.

Here, the sinful condition of the kingdoms, and those who participate in them, is pictured by being drunken with wine…  uncontrolled behavior, the constant seeking to fulfill their fleshly lusts, being overcome with their own sins.  This is symbolism being given to us to show these kingdoms, and their members, slavery to their carnal lusts.

These are the characters that the angel will now show John in greater detail…

(3)  So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness:

John is said to be “carried away” only twice in Revelation.  Here, he is taken away to see Satan’s kingdom, and also in Rev 21:10 when he is taken to see New Jerusalem, the eternal kingdom of God!

What does it mean that John was “in the Spirit”?  He was totally surrounded by the Holy Spirit’s power which allowed him to see these wonderful visions.

John is said to be taken “into the wilderness”.  The word translated “wilderness” means “desert” or “a place that is destitute of life”.  What a statement to make.   For John to be shown the kingdoms of Satan, he will have to be taken to the place where there is no life (spiritual life).    He will be looking at Satan, his kingdoms, and lost mankind…. no evidence of spiritual life exists within any of this group of sinful beings.

and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast,

John is now shown the two aspects of this kingdom.  The religious powers are symbolized by the woman, the political powers symbolized by the beast upon which she sits.

The woman sitting upon the beast symbolizes three things for us:

  1. she is associated to the beast – the nations of the world and the beast work together (forming of national religions)
  2. she is supported by the beast – citizens are forced to participate in the national religion
  3. the beasts is controlled by the woman – the false religions keep the citizenry in submission to the beast and hold great influence in the policy making of the beast

The beast is said to be scarlet colored.  Compare the following description of the scarlet beast with the description of the beast from the sea in Rev 13: Clearly this is speaking of the same Satanic kingdom.

Scarlet symbolizes:

  1. shed blood (of Christ – Exo 25:-29:, Josh 2:18-21) –
  2. great authority (Gen 38:28-30, Dan 5:7,16,29)
  3. sinfulness (Isa 1:18)

Satan’s political power is guilty of martyrdom (shedding the blood of Christ’s people);  holds great political authority over its citizens; and is characterized by sinful laws, deeds and motivations.

full of names of blasphemy,

Each of the nations of the world are overflowing with laws and works that speak evil of God, opposing His will and ways.  Even the most Godly of nations (USA for example) can be seen gradually falling away from the truths of God and accepting the sinful ways of the world (abortions, homosexuality, taking Lord out of schools, silencing truth through politically correct speech etc.)

having seven heads and ten horns.

This beast is said to have seven heads, each of which symbolize one of the great world empires:

1.  Egypt;
2.  Assyria;
3.  Babylon;
4.  Medo-Persia;
5.  Greece;
6.  Rome;
7.  The various, diverse kingdoms who became world powers following the Roman Empires fall … (some of these include Russia, China, Japan, USA, Italy, etc etc )

This beast is said to have 10 horns. The horns represent the power and authority held by the kingdoms.   The number 10 symbolizes diverse, multiplicity, of these kingdoms.  These horns, if located on the seventh head,  reinforce the truth that the seventh head does not represent one world empire but many, various,  world powers that never gained control the known world (as did the previous 6 world empires).

These quickly summarize the world kingdoms of Satan and their influence in the world over the centuries.

John’s attention is now turned to the “Great Whore” (religious kingdoms of Satan) who is seen riding the beast, once again, if we compare this description with Rev 13 we quickly see this is the same Satanic Kingdom that is described as the “beast from the earth”…

(4)  And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,  and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls,

The color of purple is the color reserved for those held in high honor (royalty, those of beauty or wealth).  The color scarlet pictures shed blood, martyrdom, authority, and sinfulness.  The gold, precious stones and pearls that adorn her emphasize her perceived great earthly value.  They beautify her clothing making her more desired by lost mankind.

Basically the clothing of this woman reveals her as being highly sought after.  Due to her seductive ways and teachings, lost mankind is deceived into thinking that she is valuable, beautiful, exalted, and they want to be united with her.  However, her clothing also reveals her true character one of abusive of God’s people, sinful and very deceptive and misleading.

This is the perfect representation of the religious kingdoms of Satan.   Although these religions are sinful, harmful to the cause of Christ, because they are masters of deception, lost mankind values the false religions of this world.  The lost see them as key to eternal happiness and self-fulfillment.  They desire to become a part of them seeking to follow their teachings and practices.  They are totally deceived and blinded to the true nature of these worldly religions.

having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

The woman is seen as holding a golden cup, picturing a cup of great value which is great desired by the lost.  This is a cup that is filled with her sins.  Once again we see that, although her actions and teachings are sinful and to be rejected, lost men under her influence are totally deceived into seeing her deeds and words as highly valuable.

Her sins are described as “abominations” (that which God greatly hates) and “fornication” (unclean, filthy).  Her actions and messages are sinful, dirty, and rebellious, causing the Lord to hate them.   Throughout the Bible, idolatry is one of the most commonly mentioned of all abominations.   Idolatry is one of the main goals that lie behind Satan’s use of false religions.  It is used to get lost mankind to worship any one,  or anything, other than the true God.

(5)  And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

The Lord reveals this woman though a series of titles:

  1. Mystery – a secret that is known to the initiated, but unknown to the uninitiated – the true character of this woman is known to the saints of the Lord, but unknown to the lost who have been deceived
  1. Babylon the Great – Babylon comes from a root meaning “confusion”, “clamor”, or “noise”.   The message of Satan’s false religions causes confusion.  Spiritually, their teachings are of no greater value than un-orchestrated noise that holds no meaning.
  1. The Mother of Harlots – She produces great acts of sin by seducing lost men to join in her efforts joining into unlawful unions with her. They join up with her sharing in her sinful acts and teachings and actively seek her preservation.
  1. The Mother of … Abominations of the Earth – She also produces great abominations in the same way she produces fornications and harlotry. As she seduces lost men, they, in turn, begin committing great acts that God hates.

(6)  And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus:

John’s reaction to this vision.  As a child of God, He sees her for who she is.  He is not deceived by her beauty and seduction…

He sees her great opposition to the Lord and His people “blood of the saints and the martyrs of Jesus”.

He sees her uncontrolled sinfulness “drunken”.

and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

It is important to note that the root word for “admiration” means “to examine closely” or “to have eyes affixed” on something.  It DOES NOT imply that John approved, respected, or in any way coveted her teachings, works, or being.

John is simply saying that after he had studied her, he was dumbfounded….  In other words, after seeing her for who she is, through an extremely careful examination, he then was amazed at how powerful, deceitful, and seductive she was.

CHRIST REVEALED:

In this passage of Scripture, we can see clearly what Christ IS NOT.  Please remember, we have been looking at the two kingdoms (religious and political) of Satan.  They stand in glaring contrast to the kingdoms of God.

What a wonderful comparison is set before us.  Note the comparisons:

Satan’s Kingdom (Both Aspects)      Rev 17: The Kingdom Of God     Rev 21:-22:
Sinful Sinless
Temporal Eternal
Members are Lost Mankind Members are Saved Mankind
Located on this Fallen Earth Located on the New Earth
Satan Is King Over Them God Is King Over Them
Headed For Destruction Experiencing Eternal Glory
Deceitful and Seductive Honest, Transparent, Truthful

Folks, after we look at this comparison, may we stop and honor Christ today:

We could be serving a deceitful, unreliable king who only seeks his own welfare at the expense of his citizens…. But we don’t!

We could have only eternal judgment and destruction to look forward to… But we don’t!

We could always doubt his truthfulness and sincerity… But we don’t!

We serve a sinless, wonderful, gracious, kind Lord that works for our good as well as His Father’s glory.  He keeps every promise, He never misleads us, He always is honest, transparent and speaks for our welfare!

As we think about Satan’s kingly rulership and work within his kingdoms, may we always have grateful hearts… we serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who wonderfully cares for His people and works according to His sinless, gracious will!

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

Folks, may we use this lesson to be a constant reminder of our need to be on guard against the activities of these Satanic kingdoms and see them for what they really are:

  1. 1  May we always recognize error when it is taught
  2. May we recognize sinful laws that should not be followed
  3. May we recognize temporal gain for what it is… short-lived and eternally vain.
  4. May we recognize no matter how great the earthly authority or power, it cannot stand up to the Lord’s sovereign rule

And may we all learn to separate ourselves from these Satanic kingdoms and live lives of holiness as citizens of the kingdom and family of God!

The Book Of Life: Can Our Name Be Removed?

SIH STSTA ICONTHE SCRIPTURES:

To the best of my knowledge, below is a listing of every verse in the Bible that addresses the subject of  the Book of Life and other related teachings…

Exo 32:32-33 KJV – Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin–; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.   And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

Psa 69:26-28 KJV – For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.   Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.  Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Isa 4:3-4 KJV – And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:   When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

Eze 13:9 KJV – And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

Dan 12:1 KJV – And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Luk 10:20 KJV – Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Php 4:3 KJV – And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Heb 12:23 KJV – To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Rev 3:5 KJV – He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Rev 13:8 KJV – And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 17:8 KJV – The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Rev 20:12-15 KJV – And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 21:27 KJV – And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Rev 22:18-19 KJV – For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

THE STUDY:

In our study for today, we will be looking at “the Book of Life” that is written by God.  Before we look at our names being removed  from this book, we need to come to a basic understanding of this books contents…

  1. It is a book that contains the names of all the redeemed (those who will live with Christ eternally.)

Php 4:3 KJV – And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

  1. Those who are written in this book will come to a saving knowledge of Christ.

Dan 12:1 KJV – And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

[Please note: this prophecy is speaking of the times of the Gentiles (the times we are living in now).  It clearly tells us that those whose names are found written in the book of life will be saved (delivered) from their sins.  None will be lost, none will forgotten.  Everyone written in the book will receive deliverance from their sins.  This time of deliverance will end with Christ’s second coming]

  1. Wicked mankind (those who do not repent of their sins nor submit to Christ as Lord) are not included in this book.

[Please note: “the writing of the house of Israel” refers to a listing of all the redeemed of God.  It is referred to as “the writing of the house of Israel” because the redeemed make up the citizens of the “Israel of God” (God’s spiritual nation – Rom 2:28-29, Gals 6:16 etc) and will dwell in the New Jerusalem with Him.]

  1. Absence from this book results in being condemned to eternal judgment

  1. It is a book that is owned (controlled) by Christ and based upon His work on the cross.

Rev 13:8 KJV – And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 21:27 KJV – And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

  1. It is a book that was written in eternity past.

  1. Gives great joy to those who are included in the book.

Luk 10:20 KJV – Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

After looking at these basic principles concerning the book of life, we can see that having our names in this book is the greatest blessing we can receive from the Lord.  If we know our names are written in this book it means that we are counted as a citizen of God’s nation, we have been delivered from our sins through Christ’s work on the cross, we are now safe in Christ as our eternal intercessor, and our eternity is secure.

But now to the question at hand…. can our names be removed from this book?  The answer SEEMS to be “yes” based upon three passages…

Can we take these verses at face value, or is there more teaching that dwells beneath the surface of all of these?  I think it is very important that we take these verses in the context of the entire Word of God and its teachings on this subject.  Before we draw conclusions about the above verses, we need to look at another verse from Revelation that addresses the subject of name removal from the Book of Life…

Rev 3:5 KJV – He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Please notice this book is addressed to “overcomers”.  The Apostle John, the author of Revelation, clearly defines the meaning of this term in another letter that he wrote, the book of 1 John.  He clearly explains that an overcomer is one who has overcome this sinful world through faith in Christ:

1Jn 5:4-5 KJV – “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

So in Revelation 3:5, Christ is speaking to those who believe in Him as their Lord and Savior.  He promises to them that:

  1. “the same shall be clothed in white raiment” – they will be given clothed in Christ’s righteousness
  2. “and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life,” – their name will not be blotted from the book of life. This insures them that they will not lose their salvation, but are safe in the hands of the Lord eternally.
  3. “but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” – They will be recognized by Christ as their Redeemer, Intercessor, Mediator and Lord. He will act as their “defense attorney” before the Father, proclaiming that His work on the cross covers their sin and paid the sin debt that was due.

There are many other verses in the Bible that profess the same basic truth.  Those who have come to a saving knowledge of Christ are eternally secure in Him (John 6:39-40, John 10:27-30, Romans 8:29-37 etc etc)…

1Pe 1:3-5 KJV – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,  Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

These verses are, in effect, saying that their names will not be removed from “the book of life”.

Based upon the context of the entire Bible, we can see that the verses that appear to speak of being blotted out of the book needs to be studied with great care and understanding.  The Bible does not contradict itself.  If the redeemed of God are secure in Him, then their names cannot be removed from the Book of Life.  Therefore, the three texts in question before us must hold another meaning for us.

The key to understanding two of these three texts is for us to understand a principle that is presented to us in Isaiah 4:3-4…

And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:  When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.”

[Please note: In those days, a record was kept that listed all living citizens of a city. At their birth they would be added to this list, at their death they would be removed.

In this case, the Lord is telling Isaiah that He would purge out the sinfulness from Jerusalem by allowing great judgments to fall upon them (Isaiah 3:).  These judgments would result in most of the lost being killed and those who were followers of Jehovah being preserved.  At that point in time, the city’s registry of living citizens would be made up of a few lost men and Jehovah’s followers that were yet alive.]

So we can see that another type of book that the OT Jews were very familiar with was this type of registry of those who were physically alive within any given city.

In our Psalm 69:26-28 passage we can see that the Lord keeps a similar record of those who are physically alive on the earth.  It is called “the Book of the Living” not the “Book of Life”…

Here, David asks the Lord to judge the wicked in two ways…

  1. “Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.”

In other words, let their sins multiply upon them and all them to face the wrath of God that is due them.  This speaks of judgment in ETERNAL PUNISHMENT FOR SINS.

  1. “Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.”

In other words, bring physical death upon them so they can no longer harm the people of God.  As you punish the wicked of Israel, protect the righteous and allow them to continue to live.  This is the exact same principle that was spoken of in Isaiah 4:3-4.  This speaks of judgment meted out in the PHYSICAL DEATH OF THE WICKED, removing their name from the “book of the living”.

This book of the living is also referred to in our Exodus 32:32-33 passage…

Exo 32:32-33 KJV – Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin–; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.  And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

Here, Moses shows to us his great love for the people of Israel.  He asks the Lord to take his name out of the book of the living if Israel will not be forgiven.  In other words, Moses is saying that the pain of seeing the nation of Israel face the wrath of God will be too great for Moses to bear.  He would rather physically die than to see the judgment of God take place against his nation.

The Lord assures him that He will send wrath against the lost members of Israel bringing upon them physical death, but He will spare the righteous men in the nation (including Moses) and allow them to continue to live.

Again we see the same basis theme, the lost of the nation being sentenced to physical death due to their sins while the righteous would survive in their midst (Psa 69:26-28, Isa 4:34 above)

The final text that seems to teach that names will be removed from “the book of life” is…

Rev 22:18-19 KJV – For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Please notice that “the book of life” is specifically mentioned.  This does refer to the eternal listing of the chosen, redeemed saints of God that are secure in Him.  The important point to notice is that this verse says “God shall take away his PART out of the book of life…”.  The word for “part” means “allocation” or “share”.

In other words, God removes the portion of the book that could contain his name if only he was one of God’s people.   Likewise, his portion of the eternal inheritance and blessings of God described in this book he will miss out on, they will be given to those who are in the book.

This verse is not saying his name is there and then taken out… it is saying the place where his name could be is removed and therefore, there is no chance of it being written in the book…

For example, let’s assume that there in one page in the “Book of Life” for each person’s name to be written.  It is as if the Lord is saying, “the page that would have contained your name has been removed. There is no place in the book for your name to appear.”  Their “share” of the book does not exist.

It is much like the Lord’s teachings in Luke 8:17-18.  Although these men claim to be Christians and claim to share in the blessings of God’s people, they really have taken from them their “part” in God’s book that they really never possessed (their name not written in it):

Luk 8:17-18 KJV  – For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.   Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

By saying this, the Lord is making it plain that those who “take away from the words of the book of this prophecy” have no chance of having their names entered into the book of life nor receipt of eternal salvation… they are eternally condemned just as is spoken of in Rev 21:23-27…

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.  And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.  And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.  And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

So what we have spoken of in Rev 22:18-19 is the clear condemnation of anyone who does not hold fast to the teachings found in God’s Word.  If they add to these teachings, the plagues of this book are placed upon them…. If they take away from these teachings, they are removed from all the eternal blessings of God found in this book.   Unless Godly repentance takes place, there is absolutely no hope for these wicked men to share in deliverance from God’s wrath and receipt of the great blessings that God gives to His people.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

May we all praise the Lord for the security that is found in Him.  If our names are in the Book of Life we can rest assured we will spend eternity with Him.  May we all be diligent to make our calling and election sure, by doing so we will be making certain that our names are in His book, and we are safe in the hands of our Lord.

2Pe 1:10-11 KJV – Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:  For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

New World Order – 2 – The Seven World Empires

SIH STSTA ICONThe word of God has much to say about the concept of a New World Order (NWO)…. We will be studying the NWO and it’s Biblical implications in a four part series…
1.Part #1 – The NOW – What is it? – Will it take place?
2.Part #2 – Past attempts at forming a NWO by force (The 7 World Empires)
3.Part #3 –  Past attempts at forming a NWO by consensus (The Tower of Babel)
4.Part #4 –  The Future NWO – Is the Lord pleased?

THE SCRIPTURE:

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority… And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev 13:1-8)

So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns…I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast… (Rev 17:3-14)

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev 19:19-20)

Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth… And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure… (Dan 2:31-46)

THE STUDY:

Throughout history there have been seven world empires that have sought, through the use of force, to overtake and rule all of the nations that were in existence in their day:

  1. Egypt
  2. Assyria
  3. Babylon
  4. Medo-Persia
  5. Greece
  6. Rome
  7. Includes a variety of world powers existing in the last days – (Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan etc.) that attempted to overtake world in WW1 and WW2.

In every case, their attempt to overtake the known world was unsuccessful due to divine intervention.

This truth is presented in the prophecy of Revelation 13:+17:+19:  In these verses, a beast with 7 heads is described.  The 7 heads represent the 7 world empires;  while the 10 horns on the 7th head represents the 7th world empire being made up of a varied group of nations. see Rev 17:9-12.  The end of this beast is made plain in Rev 19:19-20.  It will be cast in to the Lake of Fire, picturing the Lord’s defeat of all these national empires.

Likewise Daniel 2:, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream revealed an image that represented the world empires that would exist from Daniel’s day forward into the future (Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and the world powers of the latter days.)  These were pictures by the gold, silver, brass, iron, and iron and clay parts of the image.  Once again, the end of these powers was clearly presented by the stone (Christ) culminating the destruction of the image.

The Bible gives us accounts and prophesies of divine intervention that proves the Lord’s control over the world empires.  These accounts are limited to the empires that fell during the periods in which the Old and New Testaments were written….

  1. Egypt – Exo 14:21-31 – Egyptian army drowning in Red Sea.
  2. Assyria – 2 Kings 19:35-37 – Angel of the Lord defeating Assyrian army at night
  3. Babylon – Dan 5:25-31 – Defeat of Babylon by Lord through use of Darius the Median
  4. Medo-Persia – Dan 8:2-8, 8:20-21 – Prophecy of defeat of Persia by the Greek Empire
  5. Greece – the fall of the Greek empire took place during the silent years of 400-0 BC.
  6. Rome – fell after the New Testament writings were completed and Divine revelation brought to an end.

In every case, these empires wanted to control the wealth and military power of each of these individual nations.  In each case, the Lord said “No’ and acted on behalf of his people, stopping the world wide takeover through His personal intervention or the use of other nations.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION

For the Christian….

The truth that the Lord is sovereign over all nations cannot be denied.  From the title of “King of Kings” and “Lord of Lords” to the many verses describing His sovereignty (Dan 4:34-37, Isa 40:15-17, Jer 10:10, 1 Tim 6:14-16, Rev 19:15-16) the Bible is filled with references to this truth.

We have every reason to praise and honor our Lord based upon His strength and Lordship over all.  (Psa 150:1-2)  It is because of this truth, that we can find peace and rest in the midst of a tumultuous world.  When we see Iran working to create a nuclear arsenal, terrorist threatening our country on almost a daily basis, and China growing economically and militarily, we can still trust in the fact that He is in control.

Even as we see the world rushing to form new alliances that will involve a unified monetary/economic system, a lessened military defense for our country, and loss of national sovereignty, we can rest assured that the Lord is in control.  None of these events will take place apart from His hand of protection and allowance allowing these things to take place.

While we can freely worship and proclaim His Word, let us increase our efforts to reach the lost around us with His message of salvation by grace.

For those who have never trusted in Christ…

The events leading up to the establishment of a NWO should be a warning to all of the closeness of the Lord’s coming and the end of the world.  To date, every attempt to unite the world by force was stopped by the Lord but, someday, world unity will come into existence.  Our time of national freedom is perhaps coming to a close.  The freedom to proclaim the message of God’s grace and the freedom to worship Him is still with us.  Now is the time for you to consider your eternal destiny while the truth is being proclaimed publically and you have the opportunity to worship freely.

The Lord gives us clear teaching on the way of salvation:

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  (Joh 14:6)

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Act 4:10-12)

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: (1Pe 3:18)

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  (Rom 5:1-2)

Turn from your sins and come before the Lord, and trust only in Him for your salvation.

Christ The Lamb Of The New Testament

SIH STSTA ICONWhen the Word of God calls Christ the Lamb, it is teaching us many different truths about Christ. Let’s take our time and study what the Bible teaches us when it calls Jesus the Lamb.

 THE SCRIPTURE:

 John 1:29 (KJV)

29) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 1:35-36 (KJV)

35) Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36) And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Acts 8:26-35 (KJV)

26) And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert…

32)  The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33) In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34) And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35) Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

1Pet 1:13-21 (KJV)

13) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;…

18) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation [received] by tradition from your fathers;

19) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20) Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

21) Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Rev 5:6-14 (KJV)

6) And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth…

12) Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

13) And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

14) And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four [and] twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

Rev 6

1) And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

Rev 6:16-17 (KJV)

16) And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17) For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Rev 7:9-17 (KJV)

9) After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

10) And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb…

17) For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Rev 12:11 (KJV)

11) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Rev 13:8 (KJV)

8) And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 14

1) And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

2) And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

3) And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

4) These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, [being] the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb…

12) Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Rev 15:3-4 (KJV)

3) And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints.

4) Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for [thou] only [art] holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Rev 17:14 (KJV)

14) These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.

Rev 19:7-9 (KJV)

7) Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

8) And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

9) And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Rev 21:9-27 (KJV)

9) And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife…

27) And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Rev 22

1) And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2) In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations.

3) And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

4) And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads.

5) And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

For those who are saved …

Christ, the Lamb of God, has sent the perfect example of self-sacrifice for us to follow.  After realizing all He has done for us by giving Himself on the cross to pay for our sins, should we not be willing to sacrifice ourselves for Him.

For those who have yet to be saved…

When we realize what Christ, the Lamb of God, has done to make possible the forgiveness of sin; should we not turn to Him by faith, trusting in His work to save us from our sins and secure our eternity with Him.
