Those With A Strong Conscience Are To Help Others…

SIH HALTAL ICONWe then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. (Romans 15:1-7)

The Human Conscience Series: “The Four Types Of Consciences: A Strong Conscience”

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth:

but the righteous are bold as a lion.

(Prov 28:1)

The Scriptures help us to understand that there are four different types of consciences that exist within man:
1.  A Good Conscience
2.  A Strong Conscience
3.  A Weak Conscience
4.  An Evil Conscience

Along with identifying these types of consciences, we also find teachings concerning the identifying marks of these consciences and how to maintain, or develop, the types of conscience that the Lord is pleased with.  In this section of our study we will be looking at a “Strong” conscience…

THE SCRIPTURES:

Joh 7:14-17  Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.  (15)  And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?  (16)  Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Rom 14:1-23  Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.  (2)  For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.  (3)  Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.  (4)  Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.  (5)  One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.  (6)  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.  (7)  For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.  (8)  For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.  (9)  For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.  (10)  But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.  (11)  For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.  (12)  So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.  (13)  Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.  (14)  I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.  (15)  But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.  (16)  Let not then your good be evil spoken of:  (17)  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  (18)  For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.  (19)  Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.  (20)  For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.  (21)  It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.  (22)  Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.  (23)  And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Rom 15:1-7  We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  (2)  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.  (3)  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  (4)  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.  (5)  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:  (6)  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (7) Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Ephesians 4:13-16 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14) That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;  15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:  16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

1Timothy 6:17-19 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;  18) That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;  19) Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

THE STUDY:

The Characteristics Of A Strong Conscience:

#1 – A Strong Conscience Recognizes and Applies The Truth

(John 7:14-17)

And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Following Jesus displaying a great knowledge of the teaching of the Old Testament, the Jews then ponder how He could have received such knowledge.

An individual with a strong conscience consistently fulfills God’s will for His life…

If any man will do his will,

A strong conscience discerns between Godly and human teachings…

he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

For the conscience to lead us to do God’s will, it first must be able to discern between the teachings of God and the false teachings of man.  A strong conscience has the ability to recognize the teachings of God and then lead an individual to submit to those teachings as a lifestyle.

#2 – A Strong Conscience Sacrificially Helps Those Who Are Weaker In The Faith

(Romans 14:1-23, Romans 15:1-7, Ephesians 4:13-16)

(Romans 14:1-23)

An individual with a strong conscience does not argue over that which is uncertain…

Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

An individual with a strong conscience accepts other’s differences…

Those of a strong conscience recognize that, due to their spiritual weakness, others may sincerely believe that which is not true.  They recognize the need to slowly work with the weak, gradually building them up in the truths of God, instead of finding fault and being critical of that which the weak sincerely believe is true.

An individual with a strong conscience recognizes their accountablility before God…

Those of a strong conscience recognize they will be held accountable for their workings with the weak.  They also recognize, apart from the grace of God, they would be spiritually weak as well.

An individual with a strong conscience does not hinder the growth of the spiritually weak…

(13)  Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

An individual with a strong conscience willingly abstains from exercising his liberty for the sake of the weak…

(18)  For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men…  All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

Many times the strong are called upon to abstain from a liberty God has given to them, so as to not to cause a lost individual to sin against the dictates of their weak conscience.  Willful sinning against one’s conscience is a greater sin than following the dictates of a weak conscience, which does not recognize a liberty given through the grace of God.

An individual with a strong conscience seeks things that they agree upon with the weak and things which build up the weak…

(19)  Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.  (20)  For meat destroy not the work of God.

When the saved attempt to build up the weak they should not always be concentrating on the things that separate them but they should also recognize and fellowship over the many things of which they are in agreement.

Rom 15:1-7

An individual with a strong conscience sacrifices for the benefit of the weak…

We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Those who are strong are to follow the example that Christ has set by giving of themselves so that others may benefit from the graces God has given to the strong.  All of God’s blessings that are given to us are given to share with and be a blessing to others.  Those of a strong conscience recognize that grave responsibility.

An individual with a strong conscience works for unity with the weak for the glory of God…

If saved, those who are weak share with the strong the goal of wanting to glorify God in their lives.  Using this principle as a motivating, unifying force, it will aid in the growth of the weak and the willingness to sacrifice on the part of the strong.

If we summarize the above, we can see that those with a strong conscience recognize, understand and seek to build up those weaker in the faith.  This is done through a variety of self-sacrificial acts, always remembering the goodness of God and their accountability before Him.

Ephesians 4:13-16

An individual with a strong conscience will speak the truth in love for the benefit of the weak…

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  14) That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;  15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:  16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Until we reach perfection in eternity, all men should be willing to work for the good of those who are weaker, and submit to the teachings of those who are stronger in the faith.  No one is so weak they cannot help others, nor is anyone so strong they do not need the help of others.

#3 – A Strong Conscience Witnesses Of The Grace Of God

1Timothy 6:17-19

An individual with a strong conscience will be willing to speak to those of greater wealth, honor and position of authority…

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God,

An individual with a strong conscience recognizes and appreciates the blessings of God.

who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

An individual with a strong conscience witnesses of the necessity of stewardship, the promise of rewards, and the blessings of eternity

18) That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;  19) Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Some of the areas of a strong witness include: the goodness and blessings of God, our responsibility to recognize and use those blessings properly, coming rewards for faithfulness in service, and the offer of eternal life to those who are lost.

(Note: why does it APPEAR as if the Lord is teaching that eternal life only comes after good works of willingness to give of personal wealth for the benefit of others?

1.  When a person understands the principle of self-sacrifice for the needy, it is the first step to understanding the great sacrifice that Christ has made for us (the truly spiritually needy ones).  If a person cannot grasp what it means to give of their wealth for the benefit of those who are lacking, they can never come to an understanding of Christ’s sacrifice for us.

2.  A person who is not willing to give of their wealth for others, based upon the command of Christ, cannot be saved.  It is only when we no longer are relying upon our wealth for our future security and are willing to give up all to follow Christ, that we can be saved…

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?  And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God.  Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.  And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.  Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.  And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.  And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!  And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!  It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”   (Mark 10:17-25)

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”   (Matthew 16:24-27)

Are We Sincerely Serving The Lord Or Just “Going Through The Motions”

SIH HALTAL ICONTake heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward…. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward…. (Mat 6:1-7)

Making It Plain: “Imputation” = To Place On Account, To Recognize On Account

SIH TOTT ICONThe term “Impute” is used in the KJV Old and New Testaments…

The term”impute” comes from a Latin word “imputare” which means to consider, to ascribe, to put down.

1. In the OT the word “impute” is translated from “chashab”.  “Chashab” means “to think”, “to regard”, “to value”.

2. In the NT the Greek word translated “impute” is ” logizomai”.  This word means “to count”,  “to number”, “to take an inventory”

The idea is this… when we speak of  “imputation” … we are describing to place on an account or to recognize what is on an account.

This word is normally used in the Bible to mean….

“Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute [any] thing unto his servant, [nor] to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.”  (1 Samuel 22:15) “Blessed [is] the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.”  (Romans 4:8) Here, imputation means “to recognize what is on an account”.  Each one of us, as fallen sinful men place sin on our own account when we commit that sin.  The Lord sees the already existing sin and holds us accountable.  We are blessed if the Lord intervenes and does not hold us accountable….

How does the Lord do this? “For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,  [Saying], Blessed [are] they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.”  (Romans 4:3-7) Here, “imputeth” means “to place on an account” and then “to recognize” it. By God’s gracious intervention in our lives, through faith in Christ, God removes the sin that was upon the sinner’s account and replaces it with righteousness.  By doing this, He then recognizes as righteous, the one who had sinned.

This work of God is based upon an exchange… the sin  of the unrighteous man is placed upon Christ, and in exchange, the righteousness of Christ is then placed upon the sinner’s account…. “For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,  [Saying], Blessed [are] they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.”  (Romans 4:3-7)

Labour Cannot Take Death From Us….

Deliverance From Death Only Comes Through Christ…

SIH HALTAL ICONThere is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.  He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him. (Proverbs 16:25-26)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:25-26

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Without His Intervention – Death: Proverbs 16:25-26

25) There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.
26) He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.

EXPOSITION:

Solomon, in the next two sections of our study helps us to understand what every life would be like if He would step back and allow us to live our life as our sin nature directs us.  The first lesson is that, without the intervention of the Lord, we would partake of all three types of death.  These types are: physical death (separation of the soul from the body; spiritual death (the separation of the spirit from God); eternal spiritual death (separation from God in the Lake of Fire for an eternity)…

25) There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.
1.   There exists a path that man, in his fallen, sinful condition appears to be straight and obvious.
2.   Because of his spiritual blindness, he cannot discern that this path actually leads to physical death with no hope of a glorified body, a continuation of their spiritually dead state and receipt of eternal death in torments.

What God had promised to Adam, as the result of the first sin, is exactly what mankind received… “death”, physical, spiritual, and eternal death.  Without the intervention of the Lord, this would be every man’s lot.

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”  (Genesis 2:16-17)

26) He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
Mankind, when left to himself, struggles to shake off the bondage of death through his own labors.  It is selfish actions not done to glorify God but to simply rid himself of the death that has overtaken him.  It is much like a starving man who is attempting to fulfill his desire for food, yet with no lasting satisfaction, as he finds himself hungering again and again and again.

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”   (Romans 10:2-3)

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.  Wherefore do ye spend money for [that which is] not bread? and your labour for [that which] satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye [that which is] good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, [even] the sure mercies of David.  Behold, I have given him [for] a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.  Behold, thou shalt call a nation [that] thou knowest not, and nations [that] knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.”   (Isaiah 55:1-5)

SUMMARY:

Apart from the Lord’s intervention in the lives of man, there is no hope of deliverance from death.  Oh, what a great need on our part to make certain that the Lord has intervened in our lives, and then to tell others of the riches of His grace that are found flowing from His shed blood on Calvary’s cross….

For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, [and] hating one another.  But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”   (Titus 3:3-7)

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:  So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”   (Hebrews 9:27-28)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

A Wise Man Is Revealed Through His Speech…

SIH HALTAL ICONThe wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.  Understanding [is] a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools [is] folly.  The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.  Pleasant words [are as] an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.  (Proverbs 16:21-24)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:21-24

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Wise Speech: Proverbs 16:21-24

21) The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
22)  Understanding [is] a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools [is] folly.
23) The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
24) Pleasant words [are as] an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

EXPOSITION:

In verses 21-24, the Lord teaches us that, as He works in the life of the wise,  it enables him to speak beneficial words for those around him…

21) The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
1.  The person who applies the teachings of God’s Word to his desires and thoughts will be recognized as possessing discernment (the ability to see the true nature of things).
2.  The speech of the wise is pleasant and adds to the hearers knowledge

When we receive wisdom from the Lord, both our actions and our speech will result in respect for us and benefits to others.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”   (James 3:17)

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to [him that is] weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”   (Isaiah 50:4)

22) Understanding [is] a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools [is] folly.
1.  The ability to view all sides of an issue will be a source of strength and benefit for our temporal life and eternal life with the Lord.
2.  For those who lack this ability, their teachings are valueless for our lives.

When we are able to see all sides of an issue, we are able to better understand the proper decision we are to make and the ramifications of those decisions.  The fool, who lacks this ability, fails in dealing with the issues they face.

The words of a man’s mouth [are as] deep waters, [and] the wellspring of wisdom [as] a flowing brook.”   (Proverbs 18:4)

23) The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
When our desires and thoughts are in alignment with God’s Word it will be reflected in his speech.   Wisdom will reveal what, when and how to speak, as well as giving him the words that should be spoken.

The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.  The law of his God [is] in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.”   (Psalms 37:30-31)

24) Pleasant words [are as] an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
When suitable words are spoken at the proper time, they are pleasant, of great benefit, and give forth strength and healing to those to whom they are given.

“The law of the LORD [is] perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD [is] sure, making wise the simple.  The statutes of the LORD [are] right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD [is] pure, enlightening the eyes.  The fear of the LORD [is] clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD [are] true [and] righteous altogether.  More to be desired [are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.   Moreover by them is thy servant warned: [and] in keeping of them [there is] great reward.”   (Psalms 19:7-11)

SUMMARY:

Due to the Lord’s intervention in the speech and teaching of the wise:
1.  our speech will result in respect for us and benefits to others.
2.  through wise counsel, we are able to better understand the proper decision we are to make and the ramifications of those decisions.
3.  wisdom will reveal what, when and how to speak, as well as giving him the words that should be spoken.
4.  suitable words are spoken at the proper time and are pleasant, of great benefit, strengthening, and healing to those to whom they are given.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:16-20

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Those Who Are Humble: Proverbs 16:16-20

16) How much better [is it] to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
17) The highway of the upright [is] to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.
18) Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
19) Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
20) He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy [is] he.

EXPOSITION:

In verses 16-20, the Lord teaches us that His intervention is necessary if we are to possess a genuine spirit of humility…

16) How much better [is it] to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
Throughout Proverbs, we have seen the great value of wisdom and understanding in comparison to the riches that this world has to offer.  However, it is important to understand that one of the reasons why wisdom and understanding are of such value is because they both lead us to lives of humility and Godly living.

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,  (Touch not; taste not; handle not;  Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?  Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.”   (Colossians 2:20-23)

17) The highway of the upright [is] to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.
1.  The path upon which the righteous walk leads away from evil.  Walking upon this path is dependant upon our willingness to submit to the Lord’s desires for our lives and humbly put Him as first priority of our life.
2.  The person who watchfully guards his lifestyle, is one who continues to walk on the path of the righteous.  By doing this, he builds a protective hedge of thorns around his physical and spiritual life.  Sinful living brings many physical ills and spiritual harm to those who forsake the path of righteousness.   Although those who are saved cannot lose their salvation, by living sinful lives, they can lose rewards, face the chastening hand of the Lord and live “shipwrecked” lives of spiritual defeat.

Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,  Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”   (Titus 2:10-14)

18) Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
1.  The lack of humility brings upon mankind many ills.  The lost person who stubbornly refuses to submit to the Lord’s command to repent and believe will face eternal destruction.  The word for destruction is the word that means “to break in pieces” or “to crush”.  Although prideful during their earthly existence, in the last day, as he faces divine judgment, his pride will be broken and he will be cast into eternal torment.

Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.  The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.  For the day of the LORD of hosts [shall be] upon every [one that is] proud and lofty, and upon every [one that is] lifted up; and he shall be brought low:”   (Isaiah 2:10-12)

19) Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
1.  It is more beneficial to be humble before the Lord, joining the poor and afflicted who are willing to do as He desires, than…
2.  to share in great worldly gain with those who rebelliously oppose His will.

Once again we can see the great value in possessing a God-given spirit of humility even at the risk of suffering worldly loss.

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.  The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men [are], extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.  I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.  And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as [his] eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.  I tell you, this man went down to his house justified [rather] than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.   (Luke 18:10-14)

20) He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy [is] he.
1.  A person who deals with the matters of their life wisely, will acquire that which is truly beneficial for them.
2.  A person who trusts the counsel and leadership of the Lord will be happy due to the blessings that they receive.

To handle the issues of life wisely, we are dependent upon our ability to actively live according to the counsel found in God’s Word.  How can we do this?  It is only by trusting Him to know what is best for us and to always be working on our behalf.

O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.  O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for [there is] no want to them that fear him.  The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good [thing].”   (Psalms 34:8-10)

SUMMARY:

The “bottom line” to our study today is that living a life for Christ is ALWAYS more valuable than any material gain that can be found in this world.   But the key to living a life for Christ is  three-fold:
1.  We must trust Him with our lives knowing He will only lead us to what is beneficial for us.
2.  We must willfully choose to exercise wisdom and understanding when we are faced with the issues of life.
3.  We must carry with us a humble spirit recognizing that His Word, our wisdom, our understanding, our faith in Him, and even our spirit of humility only comes through His gracious intervention in our lives.

And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:  that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”   (Ephesians 2:1-7)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:10-15

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Those In Authority: Proverbs 16:10-15

10) A divine sentence [is] in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
11) A just weight and balance [are] the LORD’S: all the weights of the bag [are] his work.
12) [It is] an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
13) Righteous lips [are] the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
14) The wrath of a king [is as] messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.
15) In the light of the king’s countenance [is] life; and his favour [is] as a cloud of the latter rain.

EXPOSITION:

In verses 10-15, we find Solomon explaining acts of wisdom that proceed from the Lord’s intervention in the lives of those holding postions of authority…

10) A divine sentence [is] in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
1.  A decision made by Godly discernment is the mark of a wise king.
2.  Kingly wisdom is also displayed by his decrees bringing forth justice not deceitfully departing from justice.

The laws of a wise king are just and fair to those under his authority

11) A just weight and balance [are] the LORD’S: all the weights of the bag [are] his work.
1.  Wise, fair, just business practices can only be found proceeding from the hand of God.
2.  The process that brings about these honest business practices are brought about by Him.

When a King propagates just business practices in a nation, it is proof that he is being led by the Lord.

12) [It is] an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
1.  It disgusts and abhors God when those in authority abuse their position by sinning against those under their authority
2.  The Lord blesses the kingdoms with strength and stability when they are ruled by those who aligned their decisions and laws according to God’s Word.
A Kingdom is favored through the lawful leadership and it is rejected through sinful leadership.
13) Righteous lips [are] the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
1.   A wise king desires to speak truthful, just words and decrees but he desires his subjects to speak truthfully as well.
2.   A king who speaks in alignment with God’s law will be loved and appreciated by his subjects.
Truthful words can only be of benefit to a king.  No wise authority holder will desire to either speak falsely or to have those under his authority speak falsely.
14) The wrath of a king [is as] messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.
1.  The hot anger of a king will result in harmful decrees and actions from him.
2.  A wise subject will desire to keep the King in an amicable attitude for his own good.

Never should those under authority seek to willfully anger those in authority.  To the best of their ability, within God’s will, they are to seek to please those to whom they are in subjection.

15) In the light of the king’s countenance [is] life; and his favour [is] as a cloud of the latter rain.
1.  When a king delights to be with one of his subjects, it will show in the king’s face and will insure peace and security for the subject.
2.  Living a life that is pleasing to the king will reap his acts of goodwill and blessings much like the rain pouring down just before harvest season when the crops are “filling out” with their harvest.

When we appease our ruler we can be assured of peace, safety and blessings from Him.

[A Psalm] for Solomon. Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.  He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.  The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.  He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.  They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.  He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers [that] water the earth.  In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.  He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.  They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.  The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.  Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.  For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and [him] that hath no helper.  He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.  He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.  And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; [and] daily shall he be praised.  There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and [they] of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.  His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and [men] shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.”   (Psalms 72:1-17)

SUMMARY:

In this lesson, we have seen that a wise king:
1.  makes decisions using Godly discernment.
2.  issues decrees that bring forth justice and truth.
3.  encourages wise, fair, and just business practices
4.  institutes fair practices that will bring about justice and equity for his people.
5.  will not disgust God by abusing their authority by sinning against those over whom he rules.
6.  will align their decisions and laws according to God’s Word because he knows the Lord will bless him and his nation.
7.  desires to speak truthful, just words and decrees
8.  desires his subjects to speak truthfully
9.  will be loved and appreciated by his subjects
10.  will avoid hot anger because it will result in harmful decrees and actions.
11. will have subjects that willfully submit to him and desire to keep the King in an amicable attitude
12. when a king delights to be with one of his subjects, it will show in the king’s face and will insure peace and security for the subject.
13. will be a blessing to those that are pleasing to him.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

There Is Nothing More Valuable Than A Life Lived For The Lord…

SIH HALTAL ICONBetter [is] a little with righteousness than great revenues without right.  A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.  (Proverbs 16:8-9)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:8-9

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Man’s Walk On Earth (1): Proverbs 16:8-9

8) Better [is] a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. 9) A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

EXPOSITION: In verses 8-9, we find Solomon explaining that the Lord actively intervenes in the walk of the righteous on earth.  His teachings on this subject will be finished in verses 31-33 of this same chapter.

8) Better [is] a little with righteousness than great revenues without right.

Here, we find a basic principle concerning the earthly walk of the saints of God… Righteousness of a Christian’s thoughts, desires, motives and actions far outweigh any of the riches that this fallen world has to offer.

Keep in mind that righteousness has two aspects to it…

1.  It describes a CONDITION where man is “right” in the sight of the Lord.  This means that the saint is at peace and accepted by God based upon the shed blood of Christ on the cross. He is no longer facing eternal separation from the Lord in the Lake of Fire, but, now, is adopted into God’s family and promised to live in the eternal presence of God.

2.  It describes a WAY OF LIVING, where the saint lives a life that is “right” in the sight of God. It is a life that is pleasing to God through the gracious intervention and enabling of the Lord.

In the context of our study this morning, Solomon is using the term “righteousness”  to describe a person’s way of living. Solomon is telling us that, when a man lives a life that pleases the Lord, many times, he must sacrifice the riches that this world has to offer.  This type of life is more desirable and more beneficial than a life that is lived in disobedience to God, motivated by a selfish desire to accumulate the riches of this world.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into [this] world, [and it is] certain we can carry nothing out.  And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.   But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and [into] many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”   (1 Timothy 6:6-9)

A little that a righteous man hath [is] better than the riches of many wicked.”   (Psalms 37:16)

9) A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

1.  A man’s desires are the driving force behind his goals and plans for life: For the saint, he desires to live a righteous life that is pleasing to His Lord.  He realizes that a righteous life will bring honor to His Lord, blessings to those around him, and eternal rewards to himself.

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of [our] lips giving thanks to his name.  But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”   (Hebrews 13:15-16)

For the wicked, his desires are to accumulate the riches, pleasures, and fame of this world.  He is spiritually blind to the eternity that awaits him.  He lives according to the philiosphy that says “eat, drink, and be merry” not considering his eternal end.

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:  And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?  And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, [and] be merry.  But God said unto him, [Thou] fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?  So [is] he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”   (Luke 12:16-21)

2.  Although man makes many plans based upon the desires within him, the Lord is the One that confirms and brings about his accomplishments in life.

O LORD, I know that the way of man [is] not in himself: [it is] not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”   (Jeremiah 10:23)

The Lord is the One in control of man’s life and the circumstances that affect it.

Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am] God, and [there is] none like me,  Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken [it], I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed [it], I will also do it.”   (Isaiah 46:9-11)

SUMMARY: It is through the intervention of the Lord into the lives of His people that they are given the ability and desire to live Godly, righteous lives.  Although man may plan to attain many goals in his life, the Lord is the One that controls and brings to pass that which we accomplish.

May we all recognize, and appreciate the ever existing intervention of the Lord in our lives, accompanying, enabling and gracing us to accomplish that which He desires.

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.

The Characteristics and Development Of A “Good” Conscience

SIH TOA ICONWhat type of conscience do you have?

1Pe 3:14-17  But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;  (15)  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:  (16)  Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.  (17)  For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

The Human Conscience Series: “The Four Types Of Consciences: A Good Conscience”

SIH TOA ICONThe wicked flee when no man pursueth:

but the righteous are bold as a lion.

(Prov 28:1)

The Scriptures help us to understand that there are four different types of consciences that exist within man:

1.  A Good Conscience
2.  A Strong Conscience
3.  A Weak Conscience
4.  An Evil Conscience

Along with identifying these types of consciences, we also find teachings concerning the identifying marks of these consciences and how to maintain, or develop, the types of conscience that the Lord is pleased with.  May the Lord bless us as we embark a voyage to study each type of these consciences by looking at a “Good” conscience…

THE SCRIPTURES:

Mat 6:22-23  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.  (23)  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Act 24:16  And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

1Ti 1:3-6  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,  (4)  Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.  (5)  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:  (6)  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

1Ti 1:18-19  This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;  (19)  Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Heb 5:13-14  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.  (14)  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Heb 13:18  Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

THE STUDY:

The Characteristics Of A Good Conscience:

#1 – A Good Conscience fulfills it’s God-given roles

It keeps us on our God-given course of life…

1Ti 1:3-6  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,  (4)  Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.  (5)  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:  (6)  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Paul instructs young pastor, Timothy, of the need to teach God’s Word while setting aside the teachings and practices of man.  Why? Because God’s Word alone edifies (builds up, strengthens) the faith of God’s people.  This is the ultimate goal of those who teach the Word. To present truth that will strengthen God’s people, encourage them to show genuine love for others and possess a sincere faith within.  Sad to say, there are some teachers of the Word who have turned aside to vain proclaimations of untruths, thereby defeating the very Godly purpose they have been given.

It leads us to consistent victories over temptation…

1Ti 1:18-19  This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;  (19)  Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Paul hands to Timothy the responsibility to fight the “good fight of faith”.  Timothy was to do this by guarding and holding close faith and a good conscience, both of which are absolutely necessary to have an effective testimony for Christ.  Some have left their faith and conscience behind, and in doing so, have suffered a ruined testimony and have become ineffective witnesses for Christ.

It produces an honest lifestyle…

Heb 13:18  Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

The writer of Hebrews asks for the prayers of others.  The proof of the sincerity of their request is the fact they desired to live honest lives, which was proof of a properly functioning conscience.

It pushes us to witness of Christ and His goodness to others…

When we are mistreated due to our service to Christ, we are to be happy and not fearful.  We can know we are doing what the Lord would have us to do and therefore, He will bless us and use us as He sees fit.  During these times of troubles we are to set the Lord as number one in our life and be prepared to speak when others ask of about our faith.   This will lead to a pure conscience, which will encourage us to overlook the fault-finders and realize that they must answer for their abuse, while we will be guiltless before the Lord.  This is a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.

#2 – A Good Conscience testifies of truth of His Word

It’s operations are based upon the light of God’s Word…

Mat 6:22-23  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.  (23)  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

When we receive the Word within us, our conscience uses it as the basis of its functioning, declaring the truth within us and causing our lives to be beacons of light to a lost and sin darkened world.

#3 – A Good Conscience  is exercised

It is used on a consistent basis…

Act 24:16  And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

Paul consistently, put forth consistent effort to live so that he might have a clear conscience in his dealings with God and other men.

It finds its strength and effectiveness in its regular use….

Heb 5:13-14  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.  (14)  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Our conscience is like our muscles…. It must be steadily used to keep it toned and working properly.  Keeping our conscience working properly leads us to spiritual growth and maturity; which is shown by the ability to properly discern between good and evil.

Do We Have A Good Conscience?:

#1 – Do we find ourselves obeying the Word of God as a lifestyle?  (1 Tim 1:3-6; 1 Tim 1:18-19)
#2 – Are we sincere in what we do? (Heb 13:18)
#3 – Are we faithful, even when we are faced with opposition to our service? (1 Peter 3:14-17)
#4 – When convicted do we immediately correct the situation?  (Acts 24:16, Heb 5:13-14)

If we can answer “yes” to the above questions, we can rest assured that we possess a good, properly functioning conscience within us.

Making It Plain: “Apostle” = One Sent To Be A Representative

SIH TOTT ICONThe term “Apostle” is used only in the KJV New Testament…

1. In the OT the word “apostle” is not used.

2. In the NT the Greek word translated “apostle” is “apostolos”.  This word means “a delegate”, “ambassador”, “messenger”, or “sent one”

The idea is this… when we speak of  an “apostle”… we are describing a man that has been sent as a representative of Christ to perform a specific ministry…
“he might send them forth to preach,  And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:” (Mark 3:14)

There was a characteristic that was found in common with all the men that held the office of apostle…
“Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,  Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.”  (Acts 1:21-22)
In other words, to hold the office of Apostle, a man must have accompanied Christ during His earthly ministry that took place between His baptism and His ascension.

There were 14 men who held the title of apostle found listed in the New Testament….

The original 12…
“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,  And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:  And Simon he surnamed Peter;  And James the [son] of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:  And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,  And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.” (Mark 3:14-19)

Matthias the replacement for Judas…
“That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”  (Acts 1:25-26)

The “one born out of due time”, Paul…
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:  And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:  After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.  After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.   And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.  For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.”  (1 Corinthians 15:3-9)

The phrase “one born out of due time” means “one born prematurely”, or “one that was born without the proper preconditions”.   This is exactly what took place with Paul.  He was given the title Apostle without accompanying Christ from His baptism to His ascension. Just like a baby that comes into existence without the proper 9 months of growth in the womb of its mother.

Even The Wicked Are Under The Controlling Hand Of God….

SIH HALTAL ICONThe LORD hath made all [things] for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.  Every one [that is] proud in heart [is] an   abomination to the LORD: [though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from evil. When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. (Proverbs 16:4-7)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 16:4-7

SIH TOTT ICONHe layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Intervention of The Lord: Control Of The Wicked: Proverbs 16:4-7

4) The LORD hath made all [things] for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
5) Every one [that is] proud in heart [is] an abomination to the LORD: [though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
6) By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from evil.
7) When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

EXPOSITION:

4) The LORD hath made all [things] for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
1. Jehovah, the Self-Existent One, has systematically planned and brought into existence all things.   Why did He do this?  He did this for Himself.  It would be through creation that He would have a universal display of His greatness, grace, wisdom, power and authority.
2. A part of the creation that He has brought into existence is the wicked full well knowing that they would face His judgment someday.  Why would He do this?  He desired to show His justice, power and authority over those who willingly have chosen to rebel against Him. Here, we find the Lord able to turn man’s rebellion against Him upside down and bring glory and honor to Himself.

The Lord through His intervention of creation and judgment glorifies Himself in all things.

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:  But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous [are they], selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.”   (2 Peter 2:9-10)

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed [it], Why hast thou made me thus?  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?  [What] if God, willing to shew [his] wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:  And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,  Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?   (Romans 9:20-24)

5) Every one [that is] proud in heart [is] an abomination to the LORD: [though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
1.  Wicked men are motivated out of pride in their hearts.  All wickedness finds it root in pride. It is the arrogant attitude that says “We will not have this man to reign over us” (Luke 19:14) that causes man to live lifestyles of disobedience to Him.  Those who carry about this attitude are an “abomination” to Him.

What is an abomination?  It means to be disgusting or loathed.  Many times, it is related to the sin of placing others before the Lord.  It is used in the context of idol worship but many other times it is used of acts of extreme selfish, willful, rebellion.  A prideful heart is an extreme attitude putting oneself ahead of the Lord. It is the prideful believing they are wiser, better, of higher authority or more powerful than the Lord.  In a real sense, idol worship and a proud heart are the same type of sin.  It is the worship of others, or self, instead of God.

2.  Even when the wicked unite, they will not be able to overcome the judgment of Almighty God.

Please note the significant importance of these verses….These verses make plain that the wicked are in a very dangerous standing before the Lord, their Final Judge.  Not only are their works detested by Him, but they, themselves, are rejected by Him and awaiting Divine judgment.  If they die in their sins, they cannot expect that His enmity and rejection will only touch their sins, while, as individuals, they will escape the final rejection and judgment of God.   He makes it perfectly plain that THEY, THEMSELVES, are an abomination, rejected, despised and awaiting His judgment.

Who will render to every man according to his deeds:  To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:  But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,  Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;  But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:  For there is no respect of persons with God.   (Romans 2:6-11)

6) By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from evil.
1.  How can a wicked man be cleansed of his rebellious acts?  Through the merciful intervention of God which enables those who are wicked to apply of the truth of God’s Word to their lives coming to repentance and faith in Christ.
2.  How can a wicked man depart from his acts of wickedness?  He must fear God recognizing his dangerous position before Almighty God and come to recognition of His greatness, authority and power.  This is a part of the true salvation experience involving repentance and belief.

Through the Lord’s gracious intervention in the life of the wicked, they can be changed and become the servants of Almighty God.

Deck thyself now [with] majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.  Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one [that is] proud, and abase him.  Look on every one [that is] proud, [and] bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.  Hide them in the dust together; [and] bind their faces in secret.  Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.”   (Job 40:10-14)

7) When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
When a man follows the path in obedience and submission to the Lord, the Lord then intervenes in the heart of the enemy and works peace between them.

The intervention of the Lord is not limited to the lives of the saved, by the can also intervene and control the lives of the wicked as well.

The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee [well] in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.”   (Jeremiah 15:11)

SUMMARY:

Our Lord is so great, even the wicked are under His Sovereign control.

And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom [is] from generation to generation:  And all the inhabitants of the earth [are] reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and [among] the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?  At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.  Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works [are] truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.   (Daniel 4:34-37)

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
