“The Deliverance Of Creation 2”

SIH STSTA ICON

One of the many wonderful truths involving the Christian’s eternity with Christ concerns the deliverance of God’s physical creation from the pain and decay of sin.   What a blessing it is to know that, not only will our bodies be completely delivered from the effects of sin, but so too, the physical creation of God…

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.  And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.”  (Romans 8:21-23)

Let’s take a few moments to look at what the Bible teaches concerning the future deliverance of creation from the effects and presence of sin.

THE SCRIPTURES:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

[Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness,  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.   Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;”  (2 Peter 3:10-15)

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.  For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected [the same] in hope,  Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.  And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.”   (Romans 8:18-23)

THE STUDY:

The main texts of our study will be Romans 8:18-23 (where we find the basic principle of creation’s deliverance from sin affirmed) and 2 Peter 3:10-15 (where we find the creation’s deliverance described in detail)…

Now let’s take a look at the PROCESS behind the renovation of this heaven and earth from 2 Peter 3:10-15.   Peter now presents to us teaching on the same event as was spoken of by the Apostle Paul, the deliverance of this heaven and earth from sin, its effects and its presence…

10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Once again, we see that the timeframe for the deliverance of creation is shared with that of the glorification of our bodies.  Both take place when Christ comes as a “thief” (at His second coming – 1 Thess 5:1-10, Matt 24:36-41).

The removal of sin’s effects and presence from this creation is described with several different terms:

  1. “pass away” – to cease to be. In other words, their sinful condition will no longer exist.  They will “cease to be” what they once were because they will be changed.  Just as the Christian’s fleshly, sinful body will no longer exist when it enters into its glorified condition.
  2. “melt” – dissolved, loosened, stripped away. Creation will be “stripped” much like damaged, worn, finish is stripped from old furniture during the renovation process.
  3. “burned up” – to be burned to the ground. Much like a forest fire burns all to the ground producing fertile soil for the regrowth to begin.

Please note that NONE of these terms dictates a new creative act must take place.  Each term can easily describe a renovation process   Keep in mind, the heavens and earth will not be totally destroyed with new ones created in their place.  Contrary to this false teaching, the Bible is plain that the appearance of the new heavens and earth is the result of the RENOVATION of the old not their total destruction.  They will be “changed” much like restoring used garments…

And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:  They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;  And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.”  (Hebrews 1:10-12)

11) [Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness,

12) Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Because we know that the Lord will prepare for us an eternal dwelling place wholly separated from sin, should we not seek to rid ourselves of sin while yet on this earth?

Here, in these verses, we find two terms for this act of renovation…

  1. “dissolved” – this is the same term as “melt” in above verse.
  2. “melt” – this is a term that means “to liquefy”. Perhaps this is the most important term of them all.

We are told that through the use of fire and extreme heat the Lord will “melt” the components that make up His creation.  This melting will be used by the Lord to reform (reshape) the heavens and earth, while using its original components…

  1. This reminds us that the earth was covered with water as a part of the original creation process (Genesis 1:1-2)
  2. Also this reminds us of the world-wide flood that was God’s judgment of sin that resulted in a similar, yet incomplete cleansing of the earth…

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:  Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”  (2 Peter 3:5-7)

13) Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Although we are told that the heavens and earth will “pass away”, “melt”, “be burned up”, and “dissolved” we know that, based upon His promises to us, He will reform these into a “new” heavens and earth.   These will then be the containers of “righteousness” with the Lord and His people forever inhabiting them.

It is very important to notice the description “new”.  The Greek language has two terms that are translated “new” in the New Testament:

  1. “neos” which means “new” in relation to age and time.

This word means “young” or coming later in time.  This word carries the idea of a child compared to an adult, or a new place of employment that follows the previous place of employment.

  1. “kainos” which means “new” in relation to quality or condition.

It means “fresh”, “youthful” or “renewed”.  In speaks of the idea of a “fresh” coat of paint or the “restoration” of an antique car.

The word “new” in this passage is “kainos” (and every NT passage where we find new heavens and earth mentioned) clearly revealing the heavens and earth are “new” in the sense they are reinvigorated, or refreshed as the result of their renovation.   It CANNOT mean they are new in the sense they are young and come after the old heavens and earth.   Again, this helps us to see that the New Heavens and New Earth are the same Heavens and Earth which we are experiencing now, simply reformed and renovated to remove all traces of sin.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

Now Peter gets to the practical application of all these things…

14) Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.  15) And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

For those who have trusted in Christ.

14) Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

As believers, we all look forward to the appearance of the New Heavens and New Earth and our entrance into it.   Because of this wonderful future awaiting us, let us be certain of our standing before Him.  Let us not “miss out” on this wonderful eternity, simply because we are lax in our self-appraisal of our spiritual condition.

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:  For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”  (2 Peter 1:10-11)

For those who have never trusted in Christ.

15) And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

For those who have never trusted in Christ, please remember, the delay of His second coming (which includes the end of mankind’s opportunity for salvation and the appearance of this New Heavens and New Earth), is because He is a long-suffering Lord who is giving ample time for the lost to come to a saving knowledge of Him.  Please turn from your sins and come to Christ before it is too late…

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?   Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?   But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;  Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

 (Romans 2:3-6)

“The Deliverance Of Creation 1”

SIH STSTA ICON

One of the many wonderful truths involving the Christian’s eternity with Christ concerns the deliverance of God’s physical creation from the pain and decay of sin.   What a blessing it is to know that, not only will our bodies be completely delivered from the effects of sin, but so too, the physical creation of God…

Let’s begin with Romans 8:18-23 and look at the PRINCIPLE of the renovation of this heaven and earth…

18) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Paul reminds us that no matter what opposition may be faced for the cause of Christ, they cannot be compared to the eternal glory that is awaiting the people of God.  This eternal glory includes living in the very presence of Christ; the receipt of a glorified body; no longer facing pain, sorrow nor death; and removal from the very presence of sin and it’s effects; to name a few…

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.  And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”  (Revelation 21:1-5)

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.   But be ye glad and rejoice for ever [in that] which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.  And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner [being] an hundred years old shall be accursed.

And they shall build houses, and inhabit [them]; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree [are] the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.  They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they [are] the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.  The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust [shall be] the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.”   (Isaiah 65:17-25)

{Note: Although these verses are commonly thought of as referring to the 1000 year reign, based upon their context (vs 17), they are clearly referring to our future existence on the New Heavens and New Earth}

22) For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.   (Isaiah 66:22)

19) For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

20) For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected [the same] in hope,

21) Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

All of God’s creation is now waiting anxiously for the glorification of the believer’s body which will usher in “glorious liberty” (deliverance from the influence, effects and presence of sin) of the children of God.

Why is all creation looking forward to the glorification of the believer’s body?  Creation’s deliverance from sin will take place in a similar fashion, during the same timeframe, as that of the believer’s glorification:

  1. Both involve a renovation or a remaking – The believer’s glorification involves the believer’s body being changed (glorified and ushered into God’s presence) at His second coming. (1 Cor 15:51-58). The deliverance of God’s physical creation will involve its renovation and entrance into God’s presence (Heb 1:10-12, Rev 21:1-5)…
  2. Both involve the same timeframe (Christ’s second coming)- The believer’s glorification will take place as Christ returns in the clouds which will be followed immediately by His wrath falling upon lost mankind culminating in the renovation of the heavens and earth (Mark 13:24-27)…

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:  Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3:5-7)

22) For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23) And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.

The creation of God is now going through painful times due to sin’s effects.  She is groaning due to the pain of the effects of sin.  She “travaileth in pain” (ie suffering birth pains) as she is awaiting the “birth” of her coming reforming by God.

Paul compares this to each one of God’s people who, enduring the results of sin, are groaning in pain and eagerly awaiting the receipt of their glorified bodies and the removal of sin’s influence, effects and presence.

All of these blessings are the result of the Lord’s redemptive work on the cross where He has undone the sin and death that has entered the world through Adam (1 Corinthians 15:51-57).

In part two of our two-part series, we will look at the PROCESS behind the renovation of this heaven and earth from 2 Peter 3:10-15.

May the Lord bless you as you study His Word.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending …

SIH TOTT ICONRev 1:8 KJV

(8) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Christ calls Himself “Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending”.

Folks, Christ is the beginning and the ending of all aspects of our lives… creation; history; truth, understanding and wisdom; the languages of the world; the nations of the world; all worldly authorities; and on a more personal basis, our physical lives, our health, our families, our employment… the list seems endless.

But, for this devotional, I would like us to set our minds upon the most important area of our lives that finds its beginning and completion in the Lord, our redemption…

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ: (Philippians 1:6 KJV)

The ESV translates this verse in this way…

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6 ESV)

Although, as believers, we were redeemed in times past, we will not receive all the results of the redemptive work of Christ until His second coming.  When our Lord comes at His second coming, we will receive our glorified bodies… at this point in time the results of the redemptive work of Christ will reach total fulfillment.

What a wonderful truth for us! Our redemption was begun by our Lord and WILL BE COMPLETED by our Lord at His coming, and we can be SURE of this!   We can know with certainty that If He has begun the good work of redemption He will bring it to pass. We are secure in His hands, never to lose our salvation, never to be alienated from Him again, never to face eternal suffering for our sins.  If He has redeemed us, we will receive glorified bodies and dwell with Him eternally…

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us? (Romans 8:29-31)

May we all enter our day with joyous, confident hearts knowing that if we have been saved by His grace through faith in Christ, we can know that we will live with Him eternally in our glorified bodies.  Let us serve Him with greater appreciation knowing that we find our eternal security in Him and His redemptive work that He will bring to a completion.

May the Lord bless us as we seek to serve Him, the One that is so clearly revealed to us in the book of  the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Call Unto Me

SIH STSTA ICONJeremiah, who spoke out of a heart of obedience to the Lord and love for the nation of Judah, prophesied of their coming defeat at the hands of Babylon. The King of Judah, Zedekiah, seeing that the prophecy was coming to pass, imprisoned Jeremiah, blaming him for Judah’s coming defeat. (Jeremiah 32:1-5).

Our lesson (Jeremiah 33:1-3) now picks up with Jeremiah sitting in prison being given words of comfort from the Lord…

THE SCRIPTURES:

1) Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2) Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD [is] his name;
3) Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
(Jeremiah 33:1-3)

THE STUDY:

The Lord’s introductory message to the imprisoned prophet Jeremiah….

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

The Lord is speaking to Jeremiah for a second time while he was imprisoned by Zedekiah.

He had originally received a message from the Lord telling him of Judah’s defeat (Jeremiah 32:3-5). It was this original message for which he was imprisoned by the King of Judah, Zedekiah (Jeremiah 32:1-2).

Following his imprisonment, the first message he received is found in 32:26-44. In this message, the Lord reaffirmed his initial prophecy of the coming defeat of Judah by Babylon (32:26-35), and also gives Jeremiah a promise of a future deliverance of Judah from the 70-year Babylon captivity (32:36-44).

Can you imagine what Jeremiah must have been thinking? I believe, because he was a fallen sinful human, like all of us, he was probably plagued with doubt concerning this miracle deliverance would take place.

It was an easy thing to believe that Judah would fall to the invading Babylonian empire. After all, at that point in history, Babylon had the greatest army on the face of the planet earth. The Babylonian empire had already taken over many of the most powerful nations of the day and was now surrounding Judah ready for “the kill”.

However, the second part of this God-given promise was very different indeed. How difficult it must have been for Jeremiah to believe that Judah would ever be freed from their captivity. How could a small, impoverished and soon-to-be-imprisoned Judah ever be able to overcome the great and mighty forces of the Babylonian word empire? It would take an absolute miracle from the Lord.

Thus, the Lord now gives Jeremiah the second “prison prophecy” to reaffirm to Jeremiah the certainty of the release of Judah from Babyon…

Thus saith the LORD

The Lord now speaks to Jeremiah…

the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it;

Jeremiah is now reminded that ….
1. The Lord was the One that created both the nation of Judah and the Babylonian Empire
2. The Lord that shaped both nations to conform to the desires of His will
3. The Lord that has intervened to sustain both Judah and Babylon

In other words, He was reminding Jeremiah that both Judah and Babylon only existed because of His intervention. Without Him, neither would exist nor possess their might and authority. He was clearly explaining to Jeremiah that He was the One who has humbled Judah and He could exalt them once again. Likewise He was the One that had allowed Babylon to become the world empire of the day and He would be the One that would bring them down to defeat.

the LORD [is] his name;

The Lord now emphasizes that it is JEHOVAH that can make a legitimate claim to all of this. No false gods could claim such awesome power and authority over the kingdoms of the world. Only the One True God…. Jehovah could make such an assertion.

Call unto me,

The Lord now invites Jeremiah and the nation of Judah to “call unto me”. The word translated “call” is a Hebrew word that carries two separated, yet related ideas:

1. it is speaking of issuing “a public invitation” or “to cry out to me”

2. it is used to describe addressing someone personally.

In other words, to “call” is telling Jeremiah to “cry out to me by name” seeking forgiveness and deliverance from their captivity. The Lord is emphasizing Jeremiah’s and Judah’s privilege of communion with Him as well as the need to seek out His aid personally. It was not enough for them to seek the aid of another god…. No, his request had to be made to Jehovah only.   Because it was Jehovah, alone, that was the Creator, Shaper and Sustainer of the nations.

and I will answer thee,

The Lord promises to Jeremiah and Judah that He will answer them. The word for answer is very interesting indeed. It implies that the Lord will pay attention, consider and respond to his cry. They would not be ignored nor would they be forgotten. Their prayer would be heard and the Lord would act.

and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Not only does Jehovah promise to hear, consider and respond to Jeremiah’s and Judah’s request, but He promises His response would be “eye opening” for them. If Jeremiah and the people of Judah would approach the Lord with requests for deliverance from captivity and forgiveness of sin, the Lord would answer them by performing that which seemed impossible.

What are some of those miraculous, eye-opening things that they would see?
1. The specific events surrounding the deliverance of Judah from Babylon.
2. His forgiveness for their hard hearts and repeated acts of rebellion against Him.
3. The national and personal blessings that would be bestowed upon them following their forgiveness and deliverance.

Following this wonderful promise of answered prayer, the Lord then reiterates to Jeremiah that Judah would miraculously be delivered from Babylonian captivity, restored to the land of Israel and forgiven of their sins. (Jeremiah 33:4-8)

Why would the Lord do all of these miraculous works for Judah? So that He might receive all the honor and praise…

And it (Judah) shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.(Jeremiah 33:9)

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

Folks these same principles that we see being applied to the physical nation of Israel, applies to each one of God’s people as members of His spiritual nation (the Israel of God).

Are you facing a seemingly impossible situation that is directly linked to disobedience to your Heavenly Father? As you read these words and the many other Bible texts that reveal the Lord’s love and readiness to forgive do you shrink back in unbelief?

Folks, the Lord has made it plain to us that nothing can separate us from His love, He is always waiting to forgive us, restore communion with us and bless us abundantly no matter what situation we may be facing.

What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us?
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? [It is] God that justifieth.
Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:31-39)

These verses help us to understand that when a saint falls into unrepentant sin, this does not mean that he has lost his salvation, it is a matter of his close relationship with His Lord being hindered. Think of it this way…

When a child disobeys His parents it does not mean that he will be “kicked out” of the family?

No, it results in hindered communion with his parents… he knows he has disobeyed and his conscience plagues him concerning his disobedience. His parents are displeased with his disobedience and his will full rebellion against them and they will discipline him for his disobedience….but they DO NOT REMOVE HIM FROM THE FAMILY. They still love him, work for his good and long for forgiveness and restored communion with him.

This is how it is with our heavenly family as well. There can be hindered communion with the Father and the Son but, although we will be disciplined, we will never be cast from His presence…

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
For they verily for a few days chastened [us] after their own pleasure; but he for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of his holiness.
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
(Hebrews 12:5-13)

It is only through confession of our sins and a turning from those sins that we will find unhindered communion and a restoration of peace in our hearts.

Turn to the Lord and allow Him to bless with forgiveness and a restoration of fellowship with Him. Allow Him to open your eyes to His miraculous love, faithfulness and mercy. He will once again restore peace to our hearts and a confident recognition of His presence in our life as you face the many storms of life.

May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

Spiritual Gifts: When Did The Accrediting Gifts Go Out Of Existence? (Part 4)

SIH TOA ICONIntroduction:

“Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away.” (1 Corinthians 13:8)

In our previous studies we have seen that there are three basic types of Accrediting Gifts which include several gifts under each type. In the above passage, we find each type of Accrediting Gift is represented by one gift from each type …

Type Of Accrediting Gift Gifts Included In This Type Representative Gift Mentioned In1 Cor 13:8
Supernatural Revelation Of The Truth The Word Of Wisdom, The Word of Knowledge Word of Knowledge (or Knowledge)
Supernatural Indicators Of The Truth Faith, Gifts Of Healing, Working Of Miracles, Prophecy, Discerning Of Spirits Prophecy (or Prophecies)
Supernatural Proclamation Of The Truth Divers Kinds Of Tongues, Interpretation Of Tongues Diverse Types Of Tongues (or Tongues)

Please note the above verse (1 Cor 13:8), which includes one representative gift from each group, makes it plain that each type of Accrediting Gift will come to an end at some point in time. We now will turn our attention to the question at what point in time will these gifts go out of existence?

In this study, we will see that this question is answered by the Word of God using several different lines of teaching which all present the same answer for us. This will be the lines of teaching that we will be studying:

I.        The Coming Of “That Which Is Perfect”

II.        The 70 Year Accreditation Time Span

III.        The Death Of The Apostles

IV.        The Supernatural Beginning / Natural Perpetuation Of God’s Workings

V.        The Prophecies of False Miracles In The “Last Days”

Lesson:

The Supernatural Beginning and Natural Perpetuation Of God’s Workings:

There is a principle that seems to be repeated throughout both the Old and New Testament Scriptures… it is the principle described as of “Supernatural Beginning and Natural Perpetuation”.   This principle says that in many, if not all cases, a Godly feat of creation relies upon miraculous divine intervention for its existence and the uses a series of natural acts for its continuation.

Here are a few examples of this principle….

God’s Creative Work Miraculous Beginning Natural Perpetuity/Maintenance
The Universe Spoken Into ExistenceHebrews 11:3, Psalm 33:6-9, Genesis 1:1-2:7 Gradually Decaying Waiting For DeliveranceRomans 8:19-24

Eternity Divine Visitation and Recreation of World1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 2 Peter 3:6-8 The Constant Continuation of EternityDaniel 12:1-3, Revelation 21:-22:

If you notice, based upon the above chart, the Local Assembly follows in this same pattern. The Lord miraculously came to the earth and, while He was present, He founded the local church (Matthew 10). Also, through miraculous means, following His ascension, He empowered His assembly to do His work in Acts 2:, and then He accredited His assembly through the miraculous works of the Apostles and other members of His churches throughout its beginning years.

However, also in alignment with His other acts of creation, His miraculous intervention stopped during New Testament times and from then forward the perpetuity of the local assembly is brought about through the fulfilling of the Great Commission by members of His assemblies.

Once, again, this falls into perfect alignment with the concept that the age of the accrediting miracles came to an end during the later years of the Apostles’ existence on the earth (approx. 100 AD).

We will finish this section of our study next time with a look at the prophecies given by God of the existence of false miracles workers in the last days.

Additional Information:

The Supernatural Beginning and Natural Perpetuation Of God’s Workings:

1) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4) And God saw the light, that [it was] good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6) And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7) And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.
8) And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9) And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry [land] appear: and it was so.
10) And God called the dry [land] Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that [it was] good.
11) And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, [and] the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed [is] in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12) And the earth brought forth grass, [and] herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed [was] in itself, after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.
13) And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14) And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15) And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16) And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also.
17) And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18) And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that [it was] good.
19) And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20) And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl [that] may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21) And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.
22) And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23) And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24) And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25) And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.
26) And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27) So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28) And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29) And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30) And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein [there is] life, [I have given] every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31) And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

1) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4) These [are] the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
5) And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and [there was] not a man to till the ground.
6) But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7) And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
(Genesis 1:1-2:7)

30) And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah;
31) And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
32) And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,
33) And in the cutting of stones, to set [them], and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work.
34) And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, [both] he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.
35) Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, [even] of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.
(Exodus 35:30-35)

33) And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work.
34) Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
35) And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
36) And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:
37) But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.
38) For the cloud of the LORD [was] upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
(Exodus 40:33-38)

16) And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest [pertaineth] the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, [and] the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein [is], in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.
(Numbers 4:16)

18) And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of [that which is] before the priests the Levites:
19) And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
20) That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, [to] the right hand, or [to] the left: to the end that he may prolong [his] days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

26) For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in [their] set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.
27) And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge [was] upon them, and the opening thereof every morning [pertained] to them.
28) And [certain] of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale.
29) [Some] of them also [were] appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

32) And [other] of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, [were] over the shewbread, to prepare [it] every sabbath.
33) And these [are] the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, [who remaining] in the chambers [were] free: for they were employed in [that] work day and night.
34) These chief fathers of the Levites [were] chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem.
(1 Chronicles 9:26-34)

11) Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat,
12) And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things:
13) Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD.
14) [He gave] of gold by weight for [things] of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; [silver also] for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service:
15) Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, [both] for the candlestick, and [also] for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick.
16) And by weight [he gave] gold for the tables of shewbread, for every table; and [likewise] silver for the tables of silver:
17) Also pure gold for the fleshhooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basons [he gave gold] by weight for every bason; and [likewise silver] by weight for every bason of silver:
18) And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims, that spread out [their wings], and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
19) All [this, said David], the LORD made me understand in writing by [his] hand upon me, [even] all the works of this pattern.
20) And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do [it]: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, [even] my God, [will be] with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
21) And, behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites, [even they shall be with thee] for all the service of the house of God: and [there shall be] with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man, for any manner of service: also the princes and all the people [will be] wholly at thy commandment.
(1 Chronicles 28:11-21)

6) By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7) He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

9) For he spake, and it was [done]; he commanded, and it stood fast.
(Psalms 33:6-9)

1) And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
2) And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.
3) And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
(Daniel 12:1-3)

(1) And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
(2) Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
(Matthew 10:1-2)

18) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:18-20)

1) And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5) And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6) Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7) And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8) And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9) Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10) Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11) Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12) And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13) Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
(Acts 2:1-13)

1) And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2) He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3) And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5) When they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6) And when Paul had laid [his] hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7) And all the men were about twelve.
(Acts 19:1-7)

19) For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
20) For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected [the same] in hope,
21) Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22) For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
23) And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.
24) For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
(Romans 8:19-24)

(5) Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
(Romans 9:5)

13) But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17) Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18) Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

16) All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17)

3) How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];
4) God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
(Hebrews 2:3-4)

3) Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
(Hebrews 11:3)

19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21) For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
(2 Peter 1:19-21)

SIH’s Think On These Things: Ephesians 5:19

SIH TOTT ICON

“Reflections Of His Grace”

“That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”

The Grace Of Wisdom (5:15-21)

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”

This devotional, continues to look at the second main division of the book of Ephesians. Previously, we have looked at “Reflections Of His Grace Revealed” (chaps 1-3). It that section, Paul revealed to us the gracious works of the Lord in the lives of His chosen people.

In this new section “Reflections Of His Grace Applied” (chaps 4-6) Paul will be explaining to us the practical effects of God’s grace in the lives of His people.

  1. The Grace Of Unity (4:1-6)
  2. The Grace Of Maturity (4:7-16)
  3. The Grace Of Renewal (4:17-32)
  4. The Grace Of Imitation (5:1-14)
  5. The Grace Of Wisdom (5:15-21)
  6. The Grace Of Relationships (5:22-33)
  7. The Grace Of Authority/Submission (6:1-9)
  8. The Grace Of Preparedness (6:10-21)

The next effect of God’s grace we will be looking at is the grace of WISDOM (5:15-21). The Biblical concept of “wisdom” is “the application of God’s Word to our lives”. To be “wise” is to apply the truths of God to our daily living. This is true wisdom and flows from the gracious hand of our Lord.

Keeping all this in mind, let’s turn our attention to this is a very basic outline of this section of Scripture:

I.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives Universally (vs 15)

II.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives To Use Time Profitably (vs 16)

III.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives By Recognizing God’s Will For Us (vs 17)

IV.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives Through Self-Control (vs 18)

V.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives To Praise and Thank Him (vs 19-20)

VI.        Applying God’s Word To Our Lives By Submission To Others (vs 21)

EXPOSITION:

After explaining the need for us to be “filled with the Spirit”, Paul now teaches us concerning the characteristics of those who are filled with the Spirit (ie are submitted to the Spirit’s control in every rea of our lives.)

(Ephesians 5:19-20) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Here is a listing of the two of the main characteristics of a person filled with the Spirit…

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Characteristic #1… inward, personal praise… “Speaking to yourselves” .

Is this verse describing us singing and praising God in a public way to each other in a local assembly (“yourselves”), or is this verse describing singing and praising the Lord inwardly as a personal act (“yourselves”)?

This question is very highly debated among sound Bible believers. The answer lies in the word “yourselves”. To whom was Paul speaking when he used the term “yourselves”? All I can do is share my thoughts with you and ask you to prayerfully study these things on your own.

The Greek word translated “yourselves” is found MANY times in the NT. It is used, at times, to mean…

1. “oneself” and is translated “alone”, “himself”, “herself” , and “your own”. It these cases, it is clearly speaking of a single individual with no other person in view.

2. “one group” and is translated “your own selves”, “themselves” and ”they”. In these cases, the word normally speaks of a specific group that contains many members.

My point is this, by simply studying the Greek word used here we cannot come to answer to our question because the word “yourselves” can be used in either way. However, if we look a bit farther in the verse, I believe it clearly solves our dilemma.

Later in the same verse, we read the phrase “in your heart to the Lord”. This phrase CLARIFIES the type of praise which is spoken. It clearly is referring to an inward praise coming from the heart and spirit of the believer.   Although the public worship of the Lord through the singing of songs is one way of praising Him, we need to understand that is not the type of singing of which this text speaks.

If an individual is under the Spirit’s control in every area of life (filled with the Spirit), they will consistently honor the Lord through three differing aspects of praise of the heart…

1. psalms – rehearsing of God’s Word. This word commonly refers to the Book of Psalms in the NT

2. hymns – celebration of the Lord and His works. This word comes from an uncommon root word meaning “joyous celebration”

3. spiritual songs – Spirit led honor, admiration and reverence. This word describes “songs of worship”

The Spirit filled believer will find their heart and mind filled with praise to the Lord. This praise will take the form of meditation on the Word, inward joy, satisfaction and contentment centered on Christ, and an attitude of reverence and honor for the greatness of the Lord and His works on our behalf.

This praise is likened to outward singing (“singing”) and playing of instruments (“making melody”) that brought honor and glory to the Lord during times of OT worship. Much like music brings praise to the Lord and refreshes the spirit of man, this type of “singing and making melody” of the heart holds the same results for our inward man.

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Characteristic #2… acknowledgment of the manifold blessings of the Lord found in every circumstance of life… “Giving thanks always”

For those filled with the Spirit, the recognition of God’s control of all things (Dan 4:35), linked together with faith in His promise “all things work together for good to them that love God…” (Roms 8:28), results in a willingness to endure all things, as they submit every area of their life to His will and way.

This is the key to being thankful in all conditions of life… recognize the Lord will always work for our good as we submit our entire being to His will.

Our thankfulness should be pointed towards the Triune God (all three persons are active in bringing about His will in our lives). And should be presented to God based upon Christ and His work on our behalf. It is the work of Christ which gives us access to the Father and makes our thankfulness acceptable in the sight of God.

APPLICATION:

Folks are we “filled with the Spirit?” (ie have we handed over every aspect of our lives to the control of the Spirit?) If so, we will see these different characteristics of that filling in our lives….

1. Our minds will be filled with meditation on the Word, inward joy, satisfaction and contentment centered on Christ, and an attitude of reverence and honor for the greatness of the Lord and His works on our behalf.

2. We will be willing and thankful to undergo any circumstance in life as we recognize our Lord is in absolute control of our circumstances, and is working all things out for our eventual good.

May we all get a clearer picture of our Lord and Savior, and the great grace He has shown to us. Let us be always watchful to keep His great acts of grace on our behalf in the center of our attention… In doing so, may we be motivated to LOVE Him more, APPRECIATE Him more and SERVE Him more!

“Why Does Evil Exist? (Part #7)”

SIH STSTA ICONAnd were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.”   (Mark 7:37)

“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].(Isaiah 45:7)

[Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:…” (Habakkuk 1:13)

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:  (James 1:13)

In above set of Scriptures, we find one of the supposedly contradictory texts of the Scriptures.  On one hand, from the lips of the Lord Himself, He clearly states that “I create evil”.  Then later in the Scriptures we find Habakkuk, as he speaks concerning the Lord, says [Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:  then, to add confusion to our subject, James states clearly that God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

In this series of lessons, we will be looking into two basic questions, first, “What Is God’s Role In The Existence of Evil ?” and, secondly, “What Is The Purpose Behind The Existence Of Evil ?”

THE STUDY:

As we come to a conclusion of our studies, I would like us to look at a few additional verses that can greatly benefit our understanding of this very difficult and controversial subject… “Why Does Evil Exist?”

In Romans 9:17-24, we find the Apostle Paul addressing the subject of our studies…

In the context of this text, we find Paul discussing the sovereign control over the salvation of His people and the events that He uses to bring that salvation to them.   For this discussion, he refers back to the Ten Plagues of Egypt as an example of God’s usage of the evil things of this world to reveal Himself to all mankind and the need of salvation to the lost…

For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will [have mercy], and whom he will he hardeneth.  Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?

“Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed [it], Why hast thou made me thus?  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?  [What] if God, willing to shew [his] wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:  And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,  Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”   (Romans 9:17-24)

(Please refer back to lesson #5, for an in depth look at the Lord’s allowance of Pharaoh’s rebellion and His bringing of the ten plagues to display His glory and position as Only God over All)

The Lord chose to allow Pharaoh’s heart to be hardened, due to Pharaoh’s own sinful condition, which allowed His glory to be displayed through His workings of the ten plagues.  Solomon understood this principle as well when he makes the statement…. The LORD hath made all [things] for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.  (Proverbs 16:4).   The Lord, many times, allows wicked men to rise up, so that they can be used for His glory, when He metes out the harmful results of their actions upon them (on the day of evil).

Paul is pointing out that the Lord’s choice to use the hardened Pharaoh as the cause for the performance of the plagues was an act that was fitting and proper based upon God’s attributes of love, grace, and mercy; as well as His attributes of justice, wrath and holiness.

The usage of Pharaoh was an act of love, grace and mercy towards both the nations of Israel and Egypt as well as all the nations that would hear of this great event.  For those who observed or heard of this event, the True God was being revealed to them as they were given the opportunity to exercise faith in Him, as He patiently waited for them.  He would use this event to call out His elect from both Israel and the Gentile nations.  One example of this is the Gentile prostitute Rahab which attributes her faith in God to hearing about the great display of His glory in the Jews deliverance from Egypt. (Josh 2:10)

In a very special way, the elect within these nations received maximum benefit from this loving, merciful, gracious event, as it brought many to salvation and for those already saved, it helped them to grow in grace and knowledge of Christ.

On the other hand, the Lord’s usage of Pharaoh, whose hardening was based upon his own sinful acts of rebellion and the working of Satan in his heart, was an act of holiness, wrath and justice.   Pharaoh, due to his lost condition and repeated sinful rebellion against the Lord, had made himself a public display of those who are habitually rebellious and hardhearted against God.  The wrath that fell upon Pharaoh was deserved by him based upon his wicked condition and deeds.  It was a display of a Holy, Just, God meting punishment upon the guilty and deserving.  Pharaoh, just like all mankind, deserved the wrath of God falling upon him.  This should be a warning to all of us of the fruits that are born from rebellion against the Holy, Just God of the Universe.

In Paul’s text, he points out that God’s usage of Pharaoh, and the performance of the plagues, dare not be questioned by mortal, fallen, sinful man.  Based upon our studies, we have seen that what appears to be acts of cruelty and hatred on the part of the Lord, are in actuality acts of kindness, grace and mercy toward sinful mankind.

Because we cannot see “the end from the beginning” we cannot expect to come to a full understanding of God’s workings among man. Although we cannot understand all things, it is imperative that the Christian, by faith, accept the teachings of His Word on this subject.  For us to deny He was and is in control of the harmful results of sin, or to question His holiness or justice is totally out of the question for the Christian.   It is like Paul saysNay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed [it], Why hast thou made me thus?

This principle is much like the truths of the Word that teach to us that we will be receiving glorified bodies and spending eternity with Him.  NONE of us totally understand what glorified bodies will be like, nor do we understand all of the facets of eternity with Him.  But we still must believe what the Bible teaches us about these things and trust Him with the details.  So too, with His allowance and usage of evil in this world…. we need to believe what the Scriptures clearly tell us and trust Him with the details that are yet unknown to us.

To close our study, I would like us to stop for just a moment and think about the greatest lesson we can learn from the existence of sin in the world….

(Ephesians 1:3-14)  –Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] in Christ:  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;  Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:  That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; [even] in him:  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.”

In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Folks, if these was no such thing as sin in this world, we would not be able to being to understand our Lord’s love and grace to us.  In the above verses, here are all the displays of God’s great love for us that we would knowing nothing about if sin was not in this world….

1.  who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] in Christ:
2.  he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world
3. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
4. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
5.  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will,
6.  he might gather together in one all things in Christ,
7.  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance,
8.  being predestinated according to the purpose of him
9.  after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation:
10. ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
11. the redemption of the purchased possession,

Every one of these marvelous acts performed by our Lord to reveal His glory to us, and are acts of love and grace that were performed EXCLUSIVELY in response to sin and its effects in our lives.  Without sin in the world we would know nothing of these.

Without the existence of sin, we would know very little about His love for us… nothing of His forgiveness, nor of His grace… nothing of His patience nor His merciful kindness.

But most importantly, nothing of His sacrificial love for us….

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Romans 5:8-9)

Without sin, He would not have chosen us although we were His sinful creation that rebelled and rejected Him.  Without sin, He would not have given His Son to come to the earth as man.  Without sin, Christ, God Himself, would not have gone to the cross, bore those same sins for us, allowing us to escape the punishment we deserved, and be accepted by His Holy Father.

Without sin, we could not begin to  understand …

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8:37-39)

To God be the Glory….

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

In this study we have come to understand:
1.  When the Bible speaks of “evil” is can speak of either of sin, its direct results, or its indirect results upon mankind.
2.  Our God is in absolute control of evil either through allowance or performance.
3.  Our God is perfectly holy and, although He allowed sin to enter the world, cannot be held responsible for it.
4.  Our God either allows, or many times causes the effects of sin to take place in the world, this is done to reveal Himself to mankind, bringing glory and honor to Himself.
5.  Our God either allows, or many times causes the effects of sin to take place in the world, as acts of love, mercy and grace as well as holiness, justice and deserved wrath.
6.   As Christians, who are a part of fallen mankind, we must recognize that none of us can come to a complete, absolute understanding of the above great truths of God’s Word.  We must, by faith, trust that these things are true, understanding what we can and leaving all the rest in the hands of God.

Based upon the above, as Christians what are we to do during the “evil times” of our lives?  We are to recognize He is in control and has allowed this into our life for two great purposes… our good and His glory:

1.  Since it is for our good, we are to seek His face asking Him to bring to our understanding a heart-felt recognition of His person and workings.
2.  Since it is for His glory, we are to be seeking opportunities to show Him to others, through our actions and words as these difficult times come upon us.

As the result of this study, may we all recognize His greatness, praise Him for it and come to the conclusion….

He hath done all things well

Why Does Evil Exist? (Part #6)

SIH STSTA ICONThat they may know[there is] none beside me. I [am] the LORD, and [there is] none else

THE STUDY:

Before we begin this portion of our study, let’s pick up with the summary from our studies so far …
1. “Evil” describes something that causes harm or injury
2.  “Evil” can involve moral wickedness or the results of that moral wickedness on our lives
3.  Our Lord is in absolute control of all things, this principle is clearly presented throughout the Bible
4.  The Lord is in control of Satan himself, who can do nothing apart from the Lord’s allowance
5.  The Lord is perfectly holy and separate from sin.  Because of this He is in no way the cause of sin, nor its entrance into the world.
6.  Satan and Adam are the ones who are responsible for sin’s existence and entrance into this world
7.  The Lord created the results of sin that we see taking place in the world.
8.  The Lord either allows the results of sin to take place, or in many cases, He actively brings them to pass.
9.  The Lord reveals Himself through the evil (harmful) events in this world.

If this is so, our next questions are “Why did the Lord allow the evil of sin to enter His creation and all of mankind knowing that only harm would result from it?”  “And why did He, through allowance or His direct intervention, bring to pass the evil results of our sin?”

To find the answer to the above questions, let’s refer back to one of our foundational texts, Isaiah 45:7…

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].

In the verses preceding this text, the Lord clearly explains to us all why He brings to pass the results of our sin, and by implication, why He allowed sin to enter His sinlessly perfect creation… Please note verses 5-7…

I [am] the LORD, and [there is] none else, [there is] no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:  That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that [there is] none beside me. I [am] the LORD, and [there is] none else.  I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].

Why did our loving, kind, gracious Lord “form light and create darkness”…” make peace and create evil”?  It was to reveal Himself to us.  It was to clearly show us that He is the only true God.   This is what our text unmistakably tells us.

So in what way does the entrance of sin and its results into the world reveal God to us?  Lets take a look at three Biblical examples to help explain how He performed this…
1.  The Ten Plagues of Egypt (in our previous lesson)
2.  The Life Of Job  (in our previous lesson)
3.  The Miracles of Christ

Example #3 – The Miracles Of Christ

We will use two examples of the many miracles that Christ performed, to help us understand that the evil results of sin in this world are used by God to bring honor and glory to Himself.

The Man Born Blind

And as [Jesus] passed by, he saw a man which was blind from [his] birth.  And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?  Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.  I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world….

Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.  He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner [or no], I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.  Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?  He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear [it] again? will ye also be his disciples?  Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.  We know that God spake unto Moses: [as for] this [fellow], we know not from whence he is.  The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and [yet] he hath opened mine eyes.  Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.  Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.  They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?  He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?  And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.  And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.  And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.  And [some] of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?  Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.”   (John 9:1-41)

In the very beginning of this account, we find Christ, Himself, explaining that the purpose of this man’s blindness was  “that the works of God should be made manifest in him”.   In other words, it was to “take the covering off” of God’s power and grace, thereby exhibiting it plainly the world.

(Keep in mind, although his blindness was not the DIRECT result of any sin on the part of himself or his parents it was, obviously, the INDIRECT result of sin’s existence in this world.  If sin had never entered the world, the infirmity of blindness would never exist.)

Our text then goes further showing us that this healed man recognized that, through this miracle, Jesus was of God “If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.”  which resulted in him coming to a saving faith in Christ… “And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” Along with the salvation of this young man, who knows how many others who learned of this event were brought to a saving faith in Him as well?

As humans we all would have a tendency to think that it was very unjust for the Lord to cause this young man to be born blind.  After all, through the declaration of Christ, Himself, this young man had committed no specific sin that caused his blindness.  Please keep in mind that this young man, due to his fallen sinful nature deserved eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire.  Any condition he experienced, short of eternal punishment is less suffering than any lost person would deserve.  His blindness, although it was harmful to him, still brought less harm upon him than what he actually deserved due to his sinful condition.  God was in no way unjust by allowing this young man to be born blind.

But, also, if we dig under the surface we find a very important principle we dare not overlook.  It was this very blindness that the Lord used to reveal Himself to this young man and work an act of saving grace within him.  Anyone of us would gladly be born blind if it meant that, through our blindness, we would come to a saving faith in Christ and be blessed with a glorified, infirmity free body throughout eternity.

Here, we see the basic principle that WHAT MAY APPEAR AS HARMFUL IN THE EYES OF MAN was actually based on the infinite knowledge of the Lord AN ACT OF GOD’S LOVE, MERCY AND GRACE which was performed for the benefit of the recipient.

Three verses come to our mind:

As one of the Lord’s elect, everything that took place in his life was for his ultimate good…
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.”   (Romans 8:28)

As fallen, mankind, none of us can begin to understand the workings of God and their ultimate results upon man…
For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.  For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”   (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Therefore, what may appear to be harmful to us, are in actuality, acts of love and kindness that works peace between God and man…
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)

Finally, Christ gives us a practical application for our lives that can be learned through this event. “For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. This entire event reveals to us truth about our Lord.  It is a living lesson on the role of Christ as He came to sinful man…. It was to heal those who were spiritually blind and to show the true spiritual condition to the lost whom did not see their need of salvation before this event.

Our second example drawn from the miracles of Christ is…

The Resurrection Of Lazarus
Now a certain [man] was sick, [named] Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.  (It was [that] Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)  Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard [that], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.  When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he wasThen when Jesus came, he found that he had [lain] in the grave four days already…  Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give [it] thee.  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?  She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world…The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.  Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.  When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,  And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.  Jesus wept.  Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!  And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?  Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.  Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been [dead] four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?  Then they took away the stone [from the place] where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.  And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.  And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.  And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.  Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.  (John 11:1-46)

In this account, once again, Christ clearly explains the purpose of the sickness (and coming death) that had befallen Lazarus… “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Because Christ recognized the greater purpose that lay behind the death of Lazarus, AS AN ACT OF GRACE AND MERCY, He delayed beginning the trip to the home of Lazarus for two days.  This, in essence gave time for Lazarus to pass away and be buried for four days before His arrival.

This led Martha to point out to Christ “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”  Mary, also pointed out the same truth when she said “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.   These are very true statements indeed.

Stop and think about it, because of Christ’s purposeful delay, we have Lazarus dying, Mary and Martha and his other acquaintances suffering and sorrowing greatly…. “When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her…”  All of this was due to Christ’s chosen late arrival to the sick (and now dead) Lazarus.

Before we begin to accuse Christ of being unloving, mean and hateful, let’s look at His reaction to what has taken place…
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,”

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.  Jesus wept.  Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!”

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?  Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Obviously, from these texts, it is plain that our Lord had no pleasure in allowing Lazarus to die and to bring sorrow and pain upon those left behind.  He sorrowed with them, not just motivated by the death of Lazarus, but also for the great sorrow they were feeling.

So then, we have the obvious question… Why would He allow Lazarus to become sick, and why would He delay His coming knowing that it would cause such horrible pain and grief?  To answer this, we need to remember His initial explanation of why this event would take place, “for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby”.   From God’s perfect point of view, the gain from this event far outweighed the pain that was felt.

When the Lord was revealed so mightily in the resurrection of Lazarus here are the results….  “Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.”   The salvation of many souls from eternal punishment in hell far outweighed the short-lived sorrow of those who were mourning.  It was clearly an act of the Lord’s love, grace and mercy, allowing all of these events to take place which worked eternal salvation for those who are lost.

This principle has been found throughout the ages in the lives of the Lord’s servants…. Many have gladly suffered harm in this world and were willing to exchange their physical lives for the salvation of others.  As a matter of fact, God’s people count it a privilege to give our lives in bringing salvation to others.  We have seen this historically in the lives of many martyrs throughout history (including many missionaries who have given their lives for His glory on the foreign field).

Is God unjust in all of this? Absolutely not.  Is God uncaring, unloving, and hard-hearted to bring these things to pass? Absolutely not.  In actuality, all of these things illustrate for us His love, grace, mercy and concern for those who are His people.  Remember, EVERYONE affected, as a part of fallen and sinful mankind, deserves the eternal wrath of God.  Anything short of that is only an act of grace.

Although their suffering at the death of Lazarus was great, it was nothing compared to the suffering that they deserved in the Lake of Fire.  Our Lord was absolutely just allowing/causing a small bit of temporal pain upon his people, using it to bring eternal salvation to their souls.  In the end, they would thank Him for this event knowing it led to their salvation.

Parents, on a far, far lesser degree make the same type of choice all the time.  How often does a parent discipline their child causing them pain, for the greater good?  Although the events in this text are not necessarily acts of discipline, they are still actions that cause pain for the sake of greater gain. Are parents unjust when they punish their child for wrongdoing? ABSOLUTELY NOT.  This pain brought upon the child is an act of love and concern as they are motivated by the child’s long term welfare. So it is with the harmful events that come from the hand of the Lord, they always come forth for the good of His people and to show Himself to mankind motivated by His love and concern for us.

In the case of Lazarus, Mary and Martha, although they were saved before this event, certainly it was a life changing experience that increased their knowledge and understanding of their Lord’s greatness and how He works in the midst of man.  By the time this event was over, they were far better off than before the event had taken place.  In my way of thinking, probably, until their death, they would share this miraculous miracle with only words of amazement, honor and praise on their lips.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

Anything that clearly reveals the Lord to those who are lost is an act of love, grace and kindness.  Although they may result in suffering on earth, they can reap the benefits of eternity with the Lord.

What we have seen in our study so far….

We have attempted to come to a very basic understanding of the term “evil” as used in the Bible.  We have come to see that:
1.  “Evil” describes something that causes harm or injury
2.  “Evil” can be referring to harm that is so severe, that it causes total destruction or uselessness
3.  “Evil” can, but not necessarily, involves moral wickedness
4.  “Evil” can describe sin or it can describe the results of sin
5.  “Evil” can describe the direct results of sin
6.  “Evil” can describe the indirect results of sin
7.  “Evil” can describe an act that is morally wicked
8.  “Evil” can describe, not the act, but the result of moral wickedness
9.  Evil is “the condition/act of sin, OR the direct or indirect results of sin, that are harmful, and potentially ruinous, to any part of God’s creation.”
10.  Our Lord is in absolute control of all things, this principle is clearly presented throughout the Bible
11.  It is only because the Lord is in control of all things that we can place our unwavering faith in Him
12.  The Sovereignty Of God affects: His ability to aid us, His answering our prayers, His ability to save, His prophecies to use
13. The Lord is in control of Satan himself, who can do nothing apart from the Lord’s allowance
14. The Lord is perfectly holy and separate from sin.
15. Satan and Adam are the ones who are responsible for sin’s existence and entrance into this world
16.  The Lord is the author and sovereign controller of the results of sin upon mankind
17.  The Lord uses the evil (harmful) things of this world to reveal Himself to mankind
18.  In the 10 Plagues of Egypt, the Lord revealed Himself by defeating 10 of the main gods of the Egyptians
19.  In the life of Job, Job came to experience truths about the LORD, that he had previously known in his mind but was unable to grasp in his heart.
20.  When the Lord allows/brings harmful events upon mankind, it is done motivated out of love and concern for His people

May the Lord bless you as you continue to seek His truth.

Why Does Evil Exist? (Part #1)

SIH STSTA ICONWhat Is The Biblical Meaning Of “Evil”?

Then later in the Scriptures we find Habakkuk as he speaks concerning the Lord says [Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:  then, to add confusion to our subject, James states clearly that God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

In this series of lessons, we will be looking into two basic questions, first, “What Is God’s Role In The Existence of Evil ?” and, secondly, “What Is The Purpose Behind The Existence Of Evil ?”

THE SCRIPTURES:

(Romans 5:10-16)

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.  And not only [so], but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.  But not as the offence, so also [is] the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, [which is] by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  And not as [it was] by one that sinned, [so is] the gift: for the judgment [was] by one to condemnation, but the free gift [is] of many offences unto justification.

(Romans 6:18-23)

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.  For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things [is] death.  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.  For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(Romans 8:19-22)

For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.  For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected [the same] in hope,  Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

THE STUDY:

The Characteristics of “Evil”

To begin our study, it is important for us to come to a Scriptural understanding of the term “evil”.

The word “evil” in the Bible is translated by many different words. The following is a list of the most common root words translated by the word “evil” in the KJV Bible:

In the Old Testament the word “evil” is translated from the following Hebrew root words:
1.  ra’ a’ – to spoil, to ruin, to be good for nothing, to break in pcs, marred
2.  bliya ‘al – worthless, destructive,
3.  ‘aven – nothingness, idol, trouble, vanity

In the New Testament the word “evil” is translated from the following Greek root words:
1.  poneros – hurtful, calamitous, diseased, derelict, malice, vicious
2.  kakos – worthless, depraved, causing injury, to harm
3.  phaulos – inadequate, morally wicked, valueless
4.  adikeo – to be unjust, to do wrong, to injure, suffering
5.  blasphemos – irreverent, blaspheme, to speak ill of, to harm with speech

The most basic Biblical characteristics of “evil” can be obtained from the above lists.  When used in the Holy Scriptures, the word “evil” is speaking of:
1. something that causes harm or injury
2.  in many cases, the harm is so severe that it causes total worthlessness and ruin
3.  it can be, but not necessarily, directly involved with moral wickedness

This is the basic characteristics for “evil” that we will be using throughout this study.

Based upon the above, we can also see that “evil” can be describing two different types of events….

The Two Types Of “Evil”

1. Evil can describe sin and its DIRECT results…

An act of “sin” can be described as an act of “evil” because “sin” is harmful to all mankind.  When “sin” is equated with “evil”, it presents to us two different truths about the same act:
1.  “Sin” teaches us that it is an act that is done in opposition to the revealed will of the Lord.
2.  That same act, when described as “evil”, teaches us that it is an act that brings harm upon mankind.

One example of the harm that sin brings upon mankind is “death” (Roms 6:23).  By “death” the Bible is teaching us that sin directly results in physical, spiritual and eternal death, all of which are harmful and ruinous to man.  The existence of “death” can be traced back to the specific sin of Adam that was committed in Eden… (Roms 5:12)

Besides “death”, there are many other direct results of sin upon man, all of which are evil.  When sin is committed, mankind is directly harmed.  Examples of this principle include:
1. murders which not only result in loss of life, but tremendous sorrow and hardship to those acquainted with the victim
2. lies which can result in individuals being slandered, unjustly punished, and their testimony ruined
3. adulteries which can result in broken families, and ruined testimonies
4. covetousness/theft which can result in loss of property, and financial ruin
5. drunkenness which can cause physical abuse, mental abuse, and broken families
6. hatred which can result in the abuse of those who are hated
7. sexual immorality which can result in STDs, broken homes, leading to abortions (the murder of the unborn)

The list of sins and their possible harmful results upon man are absolutely endless.  This is why “sin” and “evil” are equated in the Bible.

2. Evil can describe sin and its INDIRECT results…

Normally, when we think of the results of sin, we think of the direct results of sin (see above).  But there is also another set of sin’s results that we must classify as “indirect” results of sin.  What is an indirect result of sin?  There are many results of sin that we cannot directly link to any specific act of sin.

For example a direct result of the sin of murder is the loss of life.  The life that is lost can be directly linked back to the act of murder that was committed.  If that specific act of murder had not taken place that specific life would not have been lost.  This is a “DIRECT” result of sin.

But if we stop and think about things, there are many harmful acts that take place on the earth that cannot be linked back to a specific act of sin.  Here are some examples: earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, many diseases (colds, flu etc), many accidents (falling, tripping down steps, etc.) Once again this list seems endless.  But the principle still remains…. Think of ANYTHING that causes pain, suffering, harm, or death that cannot be directly linked to a specific act of sin… that is an INDIRECT result of sin.

By now, you might be thinking, “but why are you calling these the result of sin?  There is no sin involved in any of these.”   We will answer this question with a question… “Would any of these things happen if sin had never entered the world?”  The obvious answer is “No.”  If sin had never entered the world mankind would never suffer from sicknesses, tornados, falls, broken bones, etc.  This is the principle revealed to us in Romans 8:19-22, where we are told that all of creation is “groaning and travailing” (ie suffering under the results of sin – earthquakes, tornados, viruses, imperfections etc) and waiting for deliverance from sins affects at the second coming.

It is because of sin that the world has entered a fallen state and, due to this fallen condition of the world, we have the existence of many evils that afflict mankind but are not the result of any specific sin. This is the principle behind saying that one type of “evil” is harm to man that is INDIRECTLY linked to the presence of sin.

So what is “evil” ?  The easiest way that I can define the Biblical concept of evil is “the condition/ act of sin, OR the direct or indirect results of sin that are harmful, and potentially ruinous, to any part of God’s creation.”

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

What we have seen in this study….

So, in summary, “Evil” can describe an act or the results of that act and, in every case that it is used in the Bible, it is describing something that is harmful to man.  In other words…

Evil is “the condition/act of sin, OR the direct or indirect results of sin, that are harmful, and potentially ruinous, to any part of God’s creation.”

In our next study, we will examine the source of evil in this world.

May the Lord bless you as you continue to seek His truth.

Spirits Among Us – What Are They?

SIH STSTA ICONThe belief in the existence of ghosts is on the rise, and no wonder… in today’s world the subject of ghosts has flooded the TV screen. A few of the TV shows that have ghosts as a central theme are: “Ghost Whisperer”, “Ghost Hunters”, “Ghost Stories”, “Ghosts Lab”, “American Paranormal”, “A Haunting”, “Celebrity Ghost Stories”, “Being Human” the list goes on and on.  One list I found said there are 50 shows currently on TV centering on ghosts.  If you would like to see the list just click here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110628172308AA4hkzC

With the existence of ghosts a major subject in today’s entertainment world, I thought it would be good to look at the truth about ghosts.  The Word of God is the final authority on all issues of life here on earth and in the spirit world.  Let’s take some time to examine the truth about ghosts.

THE SCRIPTURES:

Eph 6:10-12; Rom 8:38; 2 Cor 4:3-4; Acts 26:17-18; Mark 1:23-27; 1 Sam 28:11-20; 2 Cor 11:13-15; Mat 17:1-9;

THE STUDY:

In part #1 of our study we have seen that the Bible clearly tells us that the spirits of those who have died DO NOT return to earth and live among us.   If this is the case, does this mean that the only living beings on earth are human, embodied beings?  Absolutely not!

The Word of God tells us that there is a spirit realm that does exist on earth.  This spirit realm includes Satan and others who oppose the things of God. Also, there are angels that exist to aid and protect God’s people.

First let’s look at those spirit beings that oppose the cause of Christ….

(Eph 6:10-12) – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

(Rom 8:38) – For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(2Co 4:3-4) – But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

(Act 26:17-18) – Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

(Job 1:7) – And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

(1 Peter 1:5) – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

As we can see, it is obvious that Satan and other fallen angels are present among us seeking to hinder the Christian’s walk with Christ and keep blinded the eyes of the lost world.

Keep in mind angels are spirit beings (do not have fleshly bodies)…

(Heb 1:13-14) – But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?  Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

(Psa 104:4) – Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

(Job 4:15-21)  Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:  It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,  Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?  Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:  How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?  They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.  Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

Based on the above we can see that elect and fallen angels (including Satan himself) are spirits that are present on the earth with us.  The existence and ministry of these beings explain many of the references to “angels”, “spirits”, “ghosts” and “demons” that we find in the Bible….

(Mat 14:24-27) – But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.  And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.  And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.  But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

(Luk 24:36-40) – And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.  And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?  Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

Note in the above references, the followers of Christ understand that spirit beings (fallen angels) do exist on the earth… Christ Himself affirms it by saying “for a spirit has not flesh and bones” .  he did not say, “there is no such things as spirits on the earth.”

Here are a few other, among many, verses that speak of fallen angels being active among mankind on earth…

(Jdg 9:23) – Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

(Mat 10:1) – And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

(Mar 1:23-27) – And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.  And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.  And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

There are two events in the Bible that seem to teach that the spirits of dead men did appear to those still living on the earth…

(1Sa 28:11-20) – Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.  And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.  And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.  And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.  And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.  Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?  And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:  Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.  Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.  Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

Did Saul actually see Samuel or a demon masquerading as Samuel?  To answer this question we should turn to ….

(2Co 11:13-15) – For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The Lord would not have blessed the sinful efforts of King Saul by sending the genuine Samuel to deliver the message from the Lord.  This is simply a demon masquerading as Samuel to deceive Saul.  For an in-depth study of this Biblical event please look at my blog entry located at: https://settledinheaven.wordpress.com/2010/10/17/halloween-part-4-%e2%80%93-the-necromancy-symbols/

Finally, the transfiguration of Christ is brought up as proof that spirits of dead men live among us…

(Mat 17:1-9) – And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.  Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.  And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.  And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.  And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.  And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

The appearance of Moses and Elijah was a “vision” that Peter, James and John saw.   The spirits of Moses and Elijah were not on earth in actuality… they were simply a part of a vision that helped Peter, James and John see:

1. the importance of the OT law and prophets

2. Christ was the fulfillment of the law and prophets (ie He was the True Messiah)

3. a glimpse into what eternity will be like for all who have trusted in Christ.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

For those who have trusted in Christ.

We must realize that those who have died do not return and live among mankind on earth.  We should also understand that spirit beings do exist among us in the persons of elect and fallen angels (called spirits, demons, angels etc.)  We are in a spiritual war and must be certain we are prepared on a daily basis wearing the armor of God that He has graciously given to us. (Eph 6:11-18)

For those who have never trusted in Christ.

There are spiritual powers that exist in this world that incredibly dangerous to man.  To dabble in the spirit realm through channelers, Ouija boards, Satanism, Spiritism etc. is incredibly dangerous for Christian and non-Christian alike.

It is only through looking to the Lord Jesus Christ can we find protection and safety from the spiritual powers of darkness that are around us.  Look to Christ for salvation, protection and eternal security in Him.  (1 John 4:4)

Escaping Fear’s Grip Part 3

SIH STSTA ICONAnyone who is familiar with the current events of the day, realize that we are living in fearful times.

Terrorism; our nation’s debt, crime, and unemployment; the decrease in value of our homes, investments, savings and retirement plans; shortages of oil and food;  the recent rash of  floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes; personal tragedies and trials, the loss of health, the loss of strength that comes with aging or sickness… all of these, and many others, produce anxiety, fear, and in some cases panic, in the hearts and minds of us all.

So what are we to do in these troubled times?  What is the answer to fear in the hearts of someone who has lost their job, is facing the foreclosure of their home and, perhaps, does not know where their next meal is coming from?  What about those who are suffering the loss of a loved one through death or divorce? Even worse, what can possibly take away the anxiety and stress that stems from losing a loved one who was the sole provider for the family? What comfort can be given to someone who is facing failing health with no medical reason to believe things will get better?

By God’s grace, over the next few blog entries we will be looking into the Word of God to see what comfort we can find during these catastrophic times of our life.  In our 3-part study we will be looking at three basic principles:

  1. Realize that the fearful times will remind us of God’s presence in our lives.  He is always with us.
  2. Realize that the fearful times fulfill a purpose in our lives. It opens doors of opportunity to us.
  3. Realize that the fearful times will come to an end.  A glorious eternity awaits us.

THE SCRIPTURES:

Rev 21

1) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2) And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3) And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.

4) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5) And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Ps 30:5 (KJV)

5) For his anger [endureth but] a moment; in his favour [is] life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy [cometh] in the morning.

Rom 8:18 (KJV)

18) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

2Cor 4:16-18 (KJV)

16) For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day.

17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory;

18) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.

Heb 11:13-16 (KJV)

13) These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14) For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15) And truly, if they had been mindful of that [country] from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16) But now they desire a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

THE STUDY:

If you are like me, it is during the fearful times of my life that time seems to stand still.  My fearful times seem to last for an eternity…. hour by hour, day after day… they seem to continue on, almost without end.  Then finally, there appears light at the end of my tunnel and the sun beings to shine once again.

But this is only my perception of things.  In reality,  the fearful, difficult times of my life, in comparison to eternity, only last a moment….

2 Cor 4:16-18 – “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory;  While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.”

Let’s stop and think about it just a minute, even if our fearful time last a lifetime, compared to eternity it is nothing. A lifetime is basically 80 years.  Compared to eternity, 80 years is nothing.  If you would take one grain of sand and compare it to all the sand found on every beach in the world, our time of distress would be smaller.  If you would take one drop of water and compare it to all the water in the oceans, rivers, lakes and wells in this world, our time of trials would be less. Truly, in the big scheme of things, a Christian is so blessed knowing that the trials of life are only short-lived and we have a wonderful eternity awaiting us…

Rom 8:18 – “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us. “

As we read His Word, we become familiar with many of the servants of our Lord who faced trial upon trial, distress upon distress.  Think of the Apostle Paul who suffered tremendous heartache and trials at the hands of those that opposed Christ and His ministers…

2Cor 11:23-27 -” Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I [am] more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty [stripes] save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; [In] journeyings often, [in] perils of waters, [in] perils of robbers, [in] perils by [mine own] countrymen, [in] perils by the heathen, [in] perils in the city, [in] perils in the wilderness, [in] perils in the sea, [in] perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.”

This same Paul, who so greatly suffered at the ends of the enemies of Christ, was able to write that these sufferings were not “able to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us”.

What a tremendous truth that applies to every follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Every fearful time we face is under our Lord’s control… it is for our good and His glory… and it is only temporal in nature. It cannot be compared to the glorious eternity awaiting us!

Chapter 11 of the book of Hebrews summarizes the great motivation that kept the OT saints as they served their Lord.  In verse number 13-16 we read…. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.  For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.  And truly, if they had been mindful of that [country] from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.  But now they desire a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

How could the OT saints be faithful to their God in the midst of such trials and struggles that they faced?  How could they continue on in the midst of so many fearful times in life?  It was this very principle that kept them going…. they knew that they had awaiting them a far better place.  They knew they had eternity with their Lord to look forward to.

You may ask, “What is so special about eternity for the Christian?”  No mortal man can begin to explain the greatness of eternity with God.  However, by His grace, He revealed eternity to the Apostle John and, then, God gave John the words to pen in Revelation chapter 21:& 22:. Here, we find beautiful descriptions of eternity with our Lord.  I would encourage every believer to memorize these chapters, and then use them as a constant motivation to serve our Lord.

For purposes of this blog, I will share only the beginning verses of chapter 21.

And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

When we read these verses, I believe it pretty much sums it up.  Yes, dear fearful, suffering believer, your fears will come to an end and your sufferings will pass.  Someday, in the near future you will no longer be in the presence of sin, sickness, trials and distress.  Fear will be a thing of the past.  We will be with our Lord, enjoying His glory, His love, and His eternal presence.

As we conclude our study on dealing with the fearful times of our lives, let us all remember that, for God’s people, our sorrows and fears will only last a season…. but joy will come in the morning when we go home to be with our Lord.

Psa 30:5 – For his anger [endureth but] a moment; in his favour [is] life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy [cometh] in the morning.

 PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

We have seen that the Bible clearly promises that the fearful times in our lives do not have to overcome us.  We can be victorious even when we are in the midst of these dark, seemingly hopeless situations that we face….

How can we know if this promise applies to us?  David, in Psalm 27:1, touches on this subject.

[A Psalm] of David. The LORD [is] my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

In these verses, David links his relationship to God with the application of His promises to us.  David describes his relationship to God as “the LORD is my light and my salvation”.  David here says that the Lord has given him the “light” of knowledge and understanding of the truth of His Word.  He goes further and says that the Lord is his “salvation”.

It is only when we have been enlightened with the truths of His Word and we have received deliverance from our sins, that we can apply His promises to our lives.  Have you ever been forgiven of your sins?  Have you ever come to Him understanding your spiritual needs and His divine supplies?

There’s A Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On!

SIH STSTA ICON

Author’s Note:

Over the Labor Day weekend, Christchurch New Zealand suffered a 7.1 earthquake. By God’s grace there were no fatalities and only a few minor injuries. (Please be in prayer for the people of Christchurch concerning the expected aftershocks.)  It light of this event, I thought it was the right time to post this to my blog. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/04/new-zealand-earthquake-curfew

Jerry Lee Lewis had it right, even though he didn’t know it when he sang” “there is a whole lotta shakin goin on” (his 1957 hit song – You can see him performing the song at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yRdDnrB5kM)

Back then he had no idea his song would apply to the age we are living in.  In today’s time, there is increasing number of earthquakes rocking the globe.  In the above chart, you can easily see that there has been a definite increase in reported earthquake activity over the past 18 years. (Above is a chart that clearly shows the increase in the number of earthquakes taking place over the past 18 years….  You can see the raw data that this chart was derived from at the USGS.gov website.  Please use the following links to see the data:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/info_1990s.php

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php

Please note the data they have for 2009 and 2010 is incomplete and not included on the chart)

Some scientists look at the data and have come to the conclusion that climate change is the culprit in this issue.  They claim that, until climate change (they used to call it global warming until our environment started to cool) is in check, we can expect the number of earthquakes to continue to increase.  I do not doubt the earthquake rate is increasing…. But I question the cause in their “theory”.

Then there are other scientists, on the other side of the issue, that say that there really is no increase in earthquake activity but simply an increase in the number of seismographs worldwide.  Their reasoning is that what is happening is that there are simply more earthquakes being reported due to the increase in number of measuring devices.  In actuality, they say, the number of earthquakes has not increased.  I believe, they are denying the obvious.

So what is going on with all these earthquakes?  Does the Bible even mention them or explain what is going on?  Let’s see what we can find in our study today….

THE SCRIPTURE:

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. (Rom 8:18-25)

THE STUDY:

When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden, not only was mankind affected; but, so too, all of earthly creation.  This is the meaning of the phrases “For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly” and “Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption” found in our Rom 8: text.

This principle is a pretty easy one for us to grasp.  When man committed sin in the garden, not only did it affect mankind, but it also affected nature.  Where once you had peace between all animals, you now have animals feeding on one another.  Where once you had animals that were in perfect submission to man, you now have animals that are wild, not easily tamed and dangerous to mankind.  Where there used to be no weeds or thistles to harm our crops, you now have them spring up all over the place making an added burden upon man to keep them under control.   The cataclysmic change in weather following the flood of Noah’s day is directly attributed to the sinfulness of mankind.  (Gen 6:5-8)  In these, and in many other ways, nature has changed due to sin.

As we continue on in our text, we find that “the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”  (To “groan” has the idea of the noise founded in grief due to great loss.  The earth, just as mankind, lost much due to the fall. To “travail” means birth pains.  It implies increasing frequency and intensity as time progresses.)

To rephrase our verse… now that creation has fallen with man, creation is slowly decaying and wasting away waiting to be purified for the 2nd coming of Christ (Rev 19:11-Rev 20:5) and then reborn as the new heavens and earth for eternity (2 Pet 3:10-13, Rev 20:12-Rev 21:5)

One result of the earth’s decaying and wasting away are the increasing earthquakes we are experiencing in today’s time. The Lord speaks of earthquakes in connection with the signs of the last days several times in Scripture (Rev 11:13, 11:19, 16:18, Zech 14:5, Matt 24:7 etc.)

As these earthquakes take place, they are a solemn reminder of sin’s affects on the earth and the coming end of the world, as promised in the Scriptures.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

For those who are saved the earthquakes should awaken within us the urgency of spreading the good news of Christ to a lost world.  The earthquakes are one proof that mankind truly is fallen and in need of salvation, but it also causes us to reflect on the end of this sinful world and the restoration that the Lord has so graciously promised.

When I think of these things, Romans 13:11-14 comes to mind:

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

For those who have never experienced the saving grace of God in your life.  Allow these earthquakes, and their significance, to motivate you to seek the Lord before it is too late.  There is no question of mankind’s need of salvation… the Bible is so very clear about this (Rom 3:9,19,23, 5:12, 11:32, Gals 3:22 Etc.)   But also, the earthquakes remind us that time is short… we should not delay coming to Christ in submission, placing our spiritual life in His hands, by faith.   The Word makes this urgency clear…

“For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2Co 6:2)

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” (Jer 8:20)
