A New Year… A New Beginning

SIH STSTA ICON“The Former Things Are Passed Away… I Make All Things New”

A new beginning.  For many of us, this is one of the greatest desires in our lives.  We look back and see mistakes that were made; sins that were committed; and hurt, pain, and loss that cannot be undone. Our only hope is for a new beginning.

But for many of us, apart from Christ, there is no real hope for a new beginning.  We understand that the effects things we have done, and things that were done to us, will continue to affect us as long as we are alive. And then, once our life comes to an end, there is absolutely no reason to believe that our condition will improve in anyway.

If we believe the record of the Bible, those without Christ can only expect a much worse experience after death than what was experienced here on earth.   Ephesians 2:12 summarizes their condition in a very concise way when it says that a person without Christ is “having no hope, and without God in the world”.

But the story does not end there, all who have Christ, have the hope of a new beginning.  A new beginning while yet on the earth, and a new beginning that will begin, and last, throughout eternity. What a wonderful blessing that the Lord has given to each one of us… the ability to have a totally new beginning that will remake us, lead us from the error of our ways, and erase all our regrets and sufferings for an eternity!

THE SCRIPTURES:

2 Corinthians 5:17 & Revelation 21:3-5

THE STUDY:

In the following texts, we can see the promise of a new beginning given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ.  Our first text addresses a new beginning that can be had while yet on the earth.  In our second text, we can see a new beginning that will be received, and will last, throughout eternity.  In both of these texts one principle is constant, the presence of Christ in the life of the recipient…

2Co 5:17 KJV

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we are told that “if any man be IN CHRIST”…. he has a new beginning: he HAS BECOME A NEW CREATURE while yet on earth….

In other words, a man has Christ is given a new existence while yet on earth.  He is given spiritual life and renewal, a new source of strength, a new set of desires, and a new heart of love for His Lord and others around him.

Although he will still feel the past effects of sin in his life, now he has One upon which he can lean, One upon which he can receive guidance, and One by which he can be comforted.  He truly has become a new creature in Christ, eternally loved by his Heavenly Father, forgiven through the shed blood of Christ, possessing a life revolutionized by the power and leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Rev 21:3-5 KJV

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

In Revelation 21:3-5, we are told that the people of God… they have a new beginning: they WILL POSSESS A NEW EXISTENCE throughout eternity.

In other words, those who have Christ experience a new type of existence that far surpasses anything they have experienced on this sinful world.  They will enjoy the physical presence of their Lord, they will have all causes of sorrow, pain, suffering, and death taken away, they will enjoy a new heavens and new earth that has not been touched by sin, nor corrupted by the workings of Satan.

THE SUMMARY:

As the Old Year passes away and the New Year begins, may it be a reminder of the new beginning that is promised to those who are in Christ.  Just as the Old Year is gone, never to be revisited… so too, the portion of our life that has been lived never to be changed.  Just as the New Year has arrived, awaiting us with open arms … so too, we have received an invitation to begin a new life in Christ.

By forsaking our past sins, failures, and rebellion and turning to Christ accepting Him as Lord and Savior by faith, accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, any one of us can receive a new beginning now, and throughout eternity.  This is the key to living a life that is filled with joy and glory now, and throughout eternity!

1Pe 1:3-8 KJV –
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:”

May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

Christ’s Eternal Peace Will Do Away With Today’s Wars

SIH HALTAL ICONRev 6:4 KJV – And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “…there went out another horse that was red: …”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 6:4 KJV

(4)  And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

In this second seal found on the seven-sealed scroll, we find John seeing “a horse that was red”.   John goes on to tell us that this horseman takes “peace from the earth”, causing them to “kill one another”, and that he possessed “a great sword”.  It is through these different descriptions that we can clearly see that this horseman represents war and the constant threat of war that exists around us.

Folks one of the hallmarks of this world’s fallen condition is the existence of war.  If we stop and think about what war is, we will be able to clearly see the effects of sin in the world…

Think about it, many times covetousness and greed are the chief motivations behind the beginnings of war.  A lust to control land, natural resources, other types of wealth/possessions, people, hatred, bigotry, etc are the seeds that bear the fruit of most wars.  All of these lusts only exist because mankind is made up of sinful, fallen creatures

When these lusts are the motivations behind a war, every life that is taken by the invading army are, in actuality, murders that are taking place.  War is the willful taking of human life, and most times, are murders that are taking place on a grand scale committed by those motivated by their fleshly lusts.

As we look about our world and see the bloodshed of war on every hand, it should be a constant reminder for us of mankind’s sinful condition and their need of Christ.   What is so sobering is that Christ willingly came to the earth and shed His blood so that we may escape from the penalty, power, and eventually the presence of sin, and live in a world where blood will no more be shed.

Following His second coming, throughout eternity, we will share in the blessing of living in a world that is free from the bloodshed of war, all because our Lord and Savior shed His blood on our behalf!

It is through the blood of Christ that man can enter into peace with God…

Col 1:12-20 KJV –  Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:  Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:… And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

This peace with God also will result in peace among men…

Luke 2:10-14 KJV –  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

May we all keep our eyes on our Lord, His shed blood on our behalf, and His future coming that will bring everlasting peace to a world that is filled with hatred, lust and bloodshed.

Antichrists and False Teachers… A Sign of Christ’s Soon Return…

SIH HALTAL ICONRev 6:2 KJV  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “…behold a white horse: …”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 6:2 KJV

And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

The opening of the first seal symbolically presents a rider on a white horse.  Although rider is similar in appearance to Christ in John’s previous visions, this rider does not represent Christ.  He represents false Christs and false teachers.

Folks, even in the early days of the New Testament, the apostles and other faithful followers of Christ were opposed by antichrists (those who falsely claimed to be Christ, or those who stood against Christ teaching error in the name of God).  Sadly, these same antichrists exist with us today.

These same antichrists were spoken of by the Apostle John in his letters.  He understood that these false teachers presented a great danger to Christians and it was of great necessity to warn God’s people of their existence throughout time until Christ’s second coming …

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.”  (1Jn 2:18 KJV)

“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” (1Jn 4:3 KJV)

“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.  For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.”  (2Jn 1:6-8 KJV)

The apostle Paul expounded on these present day false teachers as well…

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” (2Co 11:13-15 KJV)

May we never be lax Christians who are easily misled into error, but instead. be like the Berean Christians who were known for their diligence in examining the teachings they heard to be sure they align themselves with the teachings of God’s Word.  This is the only way we can prove that the teachings they were hearing originate from Christ and not lies coming from Satan and his false teachers…

Act 17:10-12 KJV

“And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.  Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.”

And may we always be reminded of the truthfulness of His soon return when we see the presence of antichrists in our midst.

Isaiah 61:1-3: “He Hath Sent Christ…”

SIH STSTA ICONWith Christmas just a few days away, I thought it would be good to stop and answer the question… “Why did God send Christ into this fallen world?”

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

THE SCRIPTURES:

Isa 61:1-3 KJV

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

THE STUDY:

In Isaiah 61:1, we find God’s calling of Christ to His ministry…

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me;  because the LORD hath anointed me

This Messianic prophecy is given from the viewpoint of Christ.  Christ explains that the Spirit of God resided on Him to empower Him in His God-given ministry.

He goes further and explains when He received the enabling presence of the Spirit into His life.  It was when He was anointed with the Spirit at His baptism (Matthew 3:16).

This ministry of Christ has three very basic aspects to it, the first aspect of His ministry we find in…

to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Aspect #1 – To Proclaim Cheerful News To The Needy (Lost) – “to preach good tidings unto the meek;”

This aspect of Christ’s ministry led Him:
To bandage those whose hopes have been destroyed – he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To announce freedom for those who are enslaved – to proclaim liberty to the captives,
To release those who were imprisoned – and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

The second aspect of His ministry we find in…

To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Aspect #2 – To Proclaim The Coming Days of Grace and Day Of The Judgment Of God – “To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God;”

The third aspect of His ministry we find in…

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

Aspect #3 – To Console Those Who Are Sorrowful (Saved) –  “to comfort all that mourn;”

This aspect of Christ’s ministry led Him:
To commit blessings to those who are sorrowful in His nation – To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion,
To commit ornaments instead of ashes – to give unto them beauty for ashes,
To commit the perfumes of joy instead of cries of sorrow – the oil of joy for mourning,
To commit clothing of praise for heaviness of spirit – the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

These three aspects to His ministry worked together in harmony to fulfill 2 goals…

that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

2-Fold Goal Of Christ’s Ministry:
The Salvation/Growth of His People – … be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD
The Honor And Glory Of His Heavenly Father- that he might be glorified.

THE SUMMARY:

Christ, as He proclaimed the gospel to the lost; proclaimed the coming days of grace and the final judgment of God; and consoled those who were sorrowful for their sins and the condition of the world around them;  secured the salvation of His people and enhanced their spiritual growth.

All of this was done so that His Heavenly Father might be glorified in the eyes of men!

During this Christmas season, may we all bring our praise and honor to Him… the One that was sent by God to be the Savior of the world…

1Jn 4:14 KJV-  And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

May the Lord bless you as you seek His truth.

Date Setting For The Lord’s Return…

SIH HALTAL ICONAnd as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? … But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only… Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.  (Mat 24:3, 36, 42; see also Matt 25:13, 2 Pet 3:10)

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. The Year 2012, The 66 Ancient Books, and File 13… Or, The End Of The World Revealed (Part #1)

SIH STSTA ICONThis was first posted in 2010.  The truths in this post remain unchanged… may we all come to a better understanding of the times of Christ’s second coming!

2012… just four little numbers that in the past few years have become a BIG DEAL!  What used to be simply a descriptor, for a 12 month segment of time on coming calendars, has become synonymous with the end of all mankind.  How did this happen?  Well, to tell you the truth, I think it takes a Mayan scholar and historian to really get the answer straight; there is much controversy over the whole theory.  I can’t read the Mayan language, nor do I understand how the Mayans went about creating their calendar; so to be fair to supporters of this theory, I think I’ll leave the explanation of all this to them.  If you are interested this link may help you…  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon

As far as I’m concerned, the only area of interest for me is … “What does God’s Word say about the world ending in 2012?”   From my perspective, God’s Word (made up of 66 separate books, Genesis – Revelation) is the only reliable authority on this whole issue.  Therefore, if God’s Word teaches that the world ends in 2012… so be it, then that proves to me that the Mayan’s had it right all along; but, if God’s Word proves the 2012 theory is baloney…. that settles it for me… I’m placing my faith in my Lord, and His Word, and I’m delegating the 2012 theory to my trash can (file 13).  (If anyone is interested in why I count God’s Word as the ultimate authority in matters like this, please refer to my previous blog entry on the Bible and Science: http://bit.ly/bYDWbZ for more info)

THE SCRIPTURE:

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? … But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only… Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.  (Mat 24:3, 36, 42; see also Matt 25:13, 2 Pet 3:10)

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. THE STUDY:

Matthew chapter 24 is a record of the teachings of Christ on the subject of His second coming and the events surrounding the end of the world:

Matthew 24:1-3…

If you notice, the question that initiated the Lord’s teachings of Matthew 24 is found in verse 3 …” Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”

So clearly, the context of this chapter is the second coming of Christ and the end of the world.  To say otherwise is to deny the context of this chapter.

(Please note, the “things” being referenced in verse 3 was the destruction of the temple by Rome a few years later in 70 AD by Roman general Titus.  This brought an end to the Hebrew worship of Jehovah in Jerusalem and began the time period we call the “latter days”.)

Matthew 24:4-28

In these verses, the Lord describes the different events leading up to His second coming. An in-depth look at these signs will be presented in Part #2 of this blog series.

Matthew 24:29-31

The coming of Christ is described as he takes His followers to heaven to be with Him. A closer look at these verses will follow in Part #3 of this blog series.

Matthew 24:32-51

Here our responsibility to look for the signs and to be ready for His coming is brought into view.  These verses we’ll look at in detail in Part #4

Note in verse 36 and verse 42 …

He clearly says in verse 36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

And then in verse 42, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

In the context, watching the signs of His coming, He makes it plain that, as we watch, we should not expect the exact time to be revealed to us!   In other words, the signs are to help us know the basic time frame of His return, but we will not know exactly when He is coming.

He explicitly states that no man, nor angel would ever know the exact time of His coming.  Even Christ, while on earth, as a human, who did not exercise His divine attributes (Phil 2:5-8), did not know the time of His second coming.  (Just a note here…. I believe that since Christ is ascended and has begun to exercise His divine attributes and authority, (Phil 2:9-11) He now knows when the second coming will take place.)

This same principle is also brought out in the Scriptures in our other text, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

“But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”

In other words, Paul did not need to write to the believers in Thessalonica about the times and seasons of Christ’s second coming because Christ had already addressed the topic.   But even though they already had teachings on the signs, there would be no specific announcement of when He would come.  In that sense, He would be coming as a thief, unannounced and unexpected by many.

SUMMARY OF OUR STUDY SO FAR:

So for this blog entry, it is important for us to see that Christ gave us signs marking a basic time frame of His coming.   However, the coming of Christ and the end of the world, will not be announced with any exact date. He specifically teaches that no man, nor angel will be shown the time of His coming.   It is a truth only known by the Triune God.

By the way, good old “2012 theory” is already rattling around in my file 13, and we are only one-fourth finished with our study!

My next blog entry will answer the question, “What are the signs of His second coming?” from Matt 24:4-28.

Do Look For The Signs Of His Coming Taking Place Around Us?

SIH HALTAL ICONRev 6:1 KJV

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “… The Lamb opened one of the seals…”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 6:1 KJV

And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

We now begin a new section in this vision received by John.  The seals are begun to be opened.  The first six seals represent the events that must take place prior to the Lord’s second coming to the earth.  Seal number seven will present the Lord’s second coming and the accompanying wrath that will fall against sinners who are living at the time of His coming.

(Please note that ALL of these events are taking place in the world around us even in today’s time.  They have been in existence and will continue to be in existence from John’s Day until the Lord comes back.)

The six seals leading up to Christ’s second coming are as follows:

  1. Seal 1 – False teachers and Anti-christs appearing in the world
  2. Seal 2 – Wars and the threatening of wars
  3. Seal 3 – Famines and shortages of all kinds
  4. Seal 4 – Catastrophic physical death
  5. Seal 5 – Martyrdom and persecution of the saints
  6. Seal 6 – The taking of the Truths of God and other displays of God’s wrath against sinners

In the next few devotions we will be looking at each of these signs of Christ’s second coming.

But what can we learn from this brief listing of everyday events that lead to Christ’s coming?  As we look about us and see these events taking place before our eyes, they are a reminder to us that God’s Word is true.  The Lord has graciously foretold (through the visions of Revelation and other prophecies in the Bible) that these things would take place.  When we see these things they are simply proofs that prophesies found in His Word are true.

If  the prophecies about the signs of His coming are true, there is no reason to believe the prophecies concerning His second coming are not true as well.  The existence of these signs proves that He is coming again.

Folks as we see these things take place around us, lift up your head… we can rest assured He is coming again and will take us home to be with Him!

Revelation 6:1-8 “Opening The First Four Seals”

SIH STSTA ICONTHE TEXT:

The Opening Of First Four Seals…

Revelation 6:1-8 KJV

(1)  And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
(2)  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
(3)  And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
(4)  And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
(5)  And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
(6)  And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
(7)  And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
(8)  And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

THE INTRODUCTION:

In chapter 6 we begin to see the seals being opened. All seven seals represent for us the events that will lead up to the  the Christian’s receipt of their eternal inheritance:

  1. Seals 1-6 reveal the events that take place before God’s wrath falls upon the earth.
  2. Seal 7 represents God’s wrath falling which prepares the way for His eternal kingdom on the New Heavens and Earth.
  3. Scroll opened reveals the eternal inheritance of the saints which will be received at His second coming.

Here is a brief outline of Revelation chapter 6:…

Opening Seals 1-4 (Revelation 6:1-8)

1.  1st Seal – White Horse – False Teachers/Christs 1-2
2.  2nd Seal – Red Horse – Wars and Rumors Of War  3-4
3.  3rd Seal – Black Horse – Famine and Scarcity  5-6
4.  4th Seal – Pale Horse – Death  7-8

Opening Seals  5-6 (Revelation 6:9-17)

5.  5th Seal – Persecution/Martyrdom 9-11
6.  6th Seal – Heaven’s Shaken – God’s Wrath Falling 12-17

In this lesson, we will see the opening of the first four seals which are commonly called the “four horsemen of the apocalypse”.  The symbolism of these four horsemen comes from Zechariah 6:1-8 (and perhaps Zech 1:8-11).

Color Of Horsemen Revelation 6:1-8 Zechariah 6:1-8 Zechariah 1:8-11
White 6:1-2 6:3a 1:8c
Red 6:3-4 6:2a 1:8a
Black 6:5-6 6:2b
Pale 6:7-8  (ashen light green) 6:3b (mixed ashen and light blond colored) 1:8b (light brown/tan/blond)

In both Zechariah 1: and 6: the horses and horsemen represent those who are deliverers of God’s judgment/consequences of sin:

Zechariah 1:15 –

“And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.”

Zechariah 6:8 –

“Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.”

Likewise, the four horsemen in Revelation 6: represents the consequences/judgment of sin in the world in which we live.

THE EXPOSITORY STUDY:

Revelation 6: –

(1)  And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals,

Following the Lamb’s receipt of the scroll and the saints’ praising Him for His worthiness to possess and control it, John’s sees the Lamb beginning to break the 7 seals which will lead to the opening of the scroll.

As we have seen in our previous studies, the opening of the seals is representative of the Lamb revealing the earthly events that must take place before the revealing of the eternal inheritance of the saints (which takes place at Christ’s second coming).

and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

As the seal is broken, John hears the noise of thunder.  This beast (lion) speaks with great authority and power as a representative of God.  He is inviting John to see the results of sin in this world.  The natural consequences of sin, and at times, God’s active judgment against sin as well.

Like this beast, as Christians, we should speak with power and boldness knowing that we have God’s authority behind us as we present the message of God’s coming judgment upon the world and the world’s need of a Savior.

This beast invites John to “come and see”, in other words he was to approach and perceive what is taking place. The idea of “see” not only involves seeing with their eyes, but also it involves coming to an understanding of what is being seen.

(2)  And I saw, and behold a white horse:

The first seal is shown to John.  This seal reveals a rider upon a white horse.

and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

The rider is described as having a bow and a crown and is motivated to “conquer”.  The horse’s white color gives us the impression of purity and righteousness.  The bow is an instrument of death commonly used in warfare or hunting.  The crown pictures authority and reward.  We can see how easily this rider could be a picture of Jesus Christ as He comes to make warfare against sin, Satan, and death.

However, the context of this horseman is very important for us to consider:

  1. All the other horsemen (seals 2-4), as well as all the other seals (seals 5-7), picture events that are harmful enemies to the world (including the people of God). Christ is in no way harmful to His people.
  2. Also we have seen that this horseman comes from symbolism which is found in Zechariah 1: and 6:. In both of the Zechariah passage we saw this horseman was a result of sin falling upon man.  This cannot be describing Christ.  Although He does judge lost mankind against sin, He is, in no way, the natural result of sin in this fallen world.
  3. Nowhere in Revelation is Christ pictured as using a bow to do battle, but He is said to use the two-edged sword to do so (Rev 1:16; 2:12,16; 19:15,21).
  4. We will see in a later study (following Revelation 6: study) we will see that this series of seals is spoken of by Christ in Matthew 24:4-28. There we can see that the false teachers of this world who not only oppose the cause of Christ, but attempt to imitate and replace Christ.  They are commonly called “antichrists” (1 John 2:18,22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7)

False teachers are clearly in view here when we are told that he went “conquering”.  This Greek word comes from the same root as the term “Nicolaitanes” (Rev 2:15) which described false teachers who attempt to conquer the people of God.

Why would false teachers be symbolized similarly to Christ?  We are told in the Scriptures that false teachers appear like Christ seeking to confuse and mislead:

Matthew 7:15 KJV – “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 KJV – “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”

Throughout the years, from John’s day forward, the world has been plagued with false teachers and those who claim to be Christ Himself.  Satan, over and over again, has attempted, and will continue to attempt, to mislead the lost world and the people of God.  This is a sign of Christ’s second coming and the saint’s receipt of the kingdom.  As we see false teachers rise and fall always remember, it is to be expected and a reminder to the people of God that He is coming again!

(3)  And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

As the second seal is opened, John is invited to view its contents by the second beast (ox).  Once again, he is told to approach and perceive what is taking place.

(4)  And there went out another horse that was red:

John now sees a rider on a red horse.  This red horse represents bloodshed and death. We will see in the following verse that this rider and horse represent war.

and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

Notice that this rider is given. This rider was given allowance to take peace, harmony and unity from this earth.   The result was that mankind would kill one another.  He was given a sword which is an instrument commonly reserved for warfare.

Seal two helps us to understand that throughout the years, from John’s day forward, the world has been plagued with “wars and rumors of wars” and will continue to be so until Christ comes back.  Once again, it is important for us to understand that, as Christians, we should never be surprised at the many wars that are taking place around us.  They all simply confirm the truthfulness of Bible prophecy and the soon return of our Lord.

(5)  And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see.

As the third seal is opened, John is invited by the living creature with the face of a man to approach and perceive what is taking place.

And I beheld, and lo a black horse;

John sees a black horse.  This horse represents great shortages and famine.

and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

The rider of the black horse is carrying a pair of balances (scales).  The symbolism is that of the carful distribution of food and other goods by weight.  Since there is a great shortage of goods and food the scales are used to carefully distribute them.

(6)  And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

The voice in the middle of the four beasts seems to be the voice of the Lamb (Rev 5:6).  Remember, the four beats are surrounding the throne where God sat and the Lamb stood nearby. This voice further explains the purpose for the balances (scales) and the severe shortages that exist:

A measure was a unit of weight that was basically one days’ worth of food for one person.

A penny was a monetary unit that is equivalent to one days wages.

(Basically, the shortages are so severe that a man must spend all his daily wage to buy a daily supply of wheat and one days wage to buy three days’ worth of barley.  Once food was purchased, there would be very little money left over for any other necessity for living.)

The beasts go further and proclaim that no one was to injure or waste the oil and wine.  In other words, because of the shortage, they were supposed to be very careful not to harm any of the olive trees or vineyards, nor were they to waste any of the olive oil and wine as it was being processed.

Finally, please notice that necessities of life are exclusively mentioned.  Wheat, barley, oil and wine were all requirements that were used on a daily basis for food and other necessities for living.  Wheat and barley were used as food for man and animals; olive oil was used as food, medicine and fuel for their lamps; wine was used as a beverage and medicine.

Seal three reveals to us that shortages of goods, lack of necessities for living and famines have and will continue to take place until the coming of our Lord Jesus.  As Christians, we should understand that there will always be shortages of necessities upon this fallen earth.  This helps us to see the need to be prepared to help meet the spiritual and physical needs of those around us.  Also, as we see these great needs take place in our lives and the lives of others, we should recognize that they are proofs that God Word is true, the Lord is in control and He is coming soon to take us home to be with Him.

(7)  And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

As the fourth seal is opened the fourth living creature (eagle) invites John to approach and perceive…

(8)  And I looked, and behold a pale horse:

John now sees a fourth horse, one that is the color of a corpse, a very ashen, light green color.

and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

This name of this rider clearly tells us the meaning of this symbolism… “death”.  Please note this rider is accompanied with “hell”.  If we understand the meaning of these words, it becomes very easy to understand this rider and his companion.

  1. “death” is the Greek word “Thantos” (Hebrew – “Maweth”) – it describes the CONDITION OF THE HUMAN BODY without a spirit. In other words, it describes a corpse (a body after the act of death takes place).
  2. “hell” is the Greek Word “Hades” (Hebrew – “Sheol”) – it describes the CONDITION OF THE SPIRIT when it is separated from the physical body. In other words, it describes a disembodied spirit (a spirit after the act of death takes place).

From these definitions, we can easily see why they are seen together.  If you have a physical body without a spirit, you must have a spirit without a body and vice versa.  Both of these occur when death takes place. When the body no longer has the spirit within it, the spirit no longer has the body surrounding it.  One describes the condition of the body, the other describes the condition of the spirit, both are the results of physical death.

And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

This horse doesn’t simply represent physical death but, most importantly, it represents catastrophic death involving suffering, violence and pain.

Notice some examples of the types of death that this rider brings upon man:

  1. “kill with the sword” murders, wars, etc (deaths of violence/pain);
  2. “hunger” famines, starvation during imprisonment or war (suffering);
  3. “death” catastrophic deaths such as plagues, shipwrecks, earthquakes, etc (pain/violence/suffering);
  4. “beasts of the earth” eaten or mauled by beasts (pain/violence/suffering).

These horrible deaths are lumped together in this symbol of the fourth horseman. They are taken from Ezekiel 14:21.

The horseman is said to possess the authority/allowance to kill “the fourth part” of the earth.  It is important to know that “part” is not found in the Greek manuscripts.  This is simply saying “power was given to him over the four of the earth”, in other words… North, South, East, West.  There is no area of the earth that will not be touched by this type of devastating death.

Seal four reveals to us that the catastrophes that take place are the fulfillment of prophesies given to us by the Apostle John.  As such, we can rest assured nothing is taking place without the Lord knowledge nor His decree or allowance.  Although the reasons for such events is difficult to understand, we can rest assured He is still in control.

As we see the occurrence of these things, we can rest assured that He will come again and never again will we see these travesties take place.

CHRIST REVEALED:

In this section of John’s vision, we saw the Lamb (our Lord Jesus Christ) breaking the first four seals on the scroll one by one which reveals four different results of sin that fall upon mankind form John’s day until the second coming of Christ.

So what do we learn about Christ in all of this?

Keep in mind, it is Christ that breaks each of these seals… in other words, He is in control of all these things.  As the exalted Lamb who gave Himself for our sins, He exercises absolute control over these events allowing them to take place for His glory and the good of His people. Although we may not understand how all of this works, we can rest assured He is in control and only allows those things that are within His sovereign will to take place.

Are you touched by any of these catastrophes?  Accept them in your life knowing they are for your ultimate good and the Lord’s glory.  The Lord is not sleeping nor on vacation, things are not out of His control, He allowed this thing to take place and He will take it from you in His time.

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION (SUMMARY)

As we looked at these four horsemen of Revelation 6:, we saw a continuing theme… the horrible results of sin in our world… false teachers/Christs; wars and rumors of war; shortages and famines; and horrible deaths.  They all are the result of living in a fallen, sinful world.  When we see these things take place, they should be a constant reminder of sin, the harm it brings into our lives, and mankind’s great need of a Savior.

May we all see the suffering and injustice that is taking place all around us, and commit our lives to love and help those who are touched by the results of sin.  Especially, may we see the need to share the gospel message with a lost and dying world in an effort to give them escape from the eternal results of sin that far outweigh the temporal results of sin that we see all around us.

May the Lord bless us as we seek to see Jesus in the pages of the book of Revelation.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “… And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them”

SIH TOTT ICONRevelation 5:13 KJV

(13)  And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

As the Worthy One is revealed, we see a succession of praise breaking forth in honor of Jesus, the slain Lamb, the One that is found to be worthy to open the seven-sealed book.  This succession began with the praise of the saints (vs 8-10), followed by the saints and heavenly angels (vs 11-12) and, finally in this section of text, we can see all of creation (including lost mankind) are seen honoring the worthy One.

All of creation is described here as:

  1. in heaven – astronauts, pilots, sun, moon, stars, birds, flying insects etc
  2. on earth – all living men, crawling insects, animals, lizards, mountains, streams, rivers, plant-life, fallen angels, Satan etc
  3. under the earth – miners, wells of water, burrowing animals and insects, bodies of the dead, inhabitants of hell, fallen angels. molten lava, etc
  4. in sea – fish, lobsters, sailors, whales etc
  5. all that are in creation – anything and everything that is created by God.

To summarize this great truth, the entire creation of God praises Christ for His greatness and worthiness based upon His person and work…

Php 2:9-11 KJV

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Psa 148:2-13 KJV

Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.
Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:  Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:  Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:  Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:   Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children: Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.

Folks, the next time we take a walk in the park, mow our yard, work in our garden, run to our cars in the rain, look up into the skies at night (or daytime), go skiing, build a snowman, swim in a lake, have a picnic in a park or even look out our window…. May we all see the Lord, His greatness, power and wisdom in all these areas of nature.

Let’s never take the wonders of God’s creation for granted. Even when we are faced with the hard times of life, all of us have this constant reminder of the greatness of our God in the midst of our suffering, no matter where we may be on earth.   The same great God that created all of nature is the same great God that is with His people during the troublesome times of life.  If our God can place the stars in the sky and create the beautiful flowers and autumn leaves, we can know assuredly He can do anything required to care for us in the midst of the storms of life!

May we all take just a few seconds today to experience His nature all around us and rest confidently knowing the Creator, Jesus Christ, is with us!

He Is Worthy To Receive The Best In Every Area Of Lives…

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “…Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”

SIH TOTT ICONRevelation 5:12 KJV

Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

At the revelation of Christ as the One worthy to open the seven-sealed scroll, we see the heavenly angels and the saints singing a song of praise in honor to Him.   In this song, they give a listing of seven things that He is worthy to receive from His people.  His worthiness is based upon His work and the eternal blessings He has given to them.

Christ is worthy to receive…

  1. power – all of man’s and angel’s life accomplishments should be aimed at honoring God
  2. riches – all of man’s and angel’s wealth and possession should be dedicated to pleasing Him
  3. wisdom – all of man’s and angel’s application of truth to their lives should be to glorify Him
  4. strength – all of man’s and angel’s strength should be exercised to accomplish His will
  5. honour – man’s and angel’s valuation of Him should see Him as priceless
  6. glory – man’s and angel’s actions should be done to illuminate and reveal Him to the world.
  7. blessing – man’s and angel’s words should always speak highly and honorably of Him.

After all He has done for us He deserves these things from us.  We do Him no favors by serving Him, worshipping Him and placing Him first in all things…

As we go about our day, living our lives and accomplishing much… we may always do everything with His honor and glory in mind.

Why do we want to do a good job at our work?  To bring honor to Him, the One who has enabled us to do the work placed before us.

Why do we want to love our spouse and go “above and beyond” for them?  To honor Christ as the One who loved us and went far beyond for us.

Why do we want to raise our children in a way that is pleasing to Him?  To bring praise to His name.

Why do we want to tell others about Him and all He had done for us?  To glorify Him and to share Christ with those who are in need of Him.

He is worthy to receive all these from us…. it is only our “reasonable service” as living sacrifices for Him!  May we all live for Him today and the rest of our lives!

Christ As Our Redeemer Is Worthy To Be Our Lord

SIH HALTAL ICONRevelation 5:9 KJV

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “…for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”

SIH TOTT ICONRevelation 5:9 KJV

(9)  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

In this vision we have seen that Christ was the only One who was worthy to open the seven-sealed scroll revealing to God’s people the wonderful inheritance that awaits them in eternity.  In our devotion this morning, we have explained to us WHY Christ is the worthy One…  ”… for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”

Christ is the Worthy One because He is our Redeemer.  In other words, Christ is the One that purchased His people, releasing them from enslavement to sin and their sin debt, giving them spiritual freedom and great eternal blessings.  It is only because of Christ, based upon His work on the cross, that the many eternal blessings of the scroll are in existence.

Angels could not secure these blessings for us, nor could our own labors or sacrifices.  This is why the worthy One could not be found among angels or men. It is only the sinless sacrifice of Christ, His shed blood, that can bring about and acquire these blessings for His people.  It only makes sense that He alone would be the worthy One.

Folks, we are faced with life choices we must make every day.  Who will we marry?  With whom will we enter business relationships?  What are our life goals and priorities?  How will we raise our children?  The list of these many choices seems endless.

But, most importantly, all of us must decide which God will we trust, worship and obey.  The God of the Bible, Jehovah, revealed to us in the person of Jesus; or the false god of this world, Satan, and the many different ways he shows himself in the world… the false gods and antichrists of the world; the false god of self; the false god of fame, fortune or power… etc.

When we consider the great work of Christ on our behalf, and His identity as the only One that is worthy to grant to His people a vast inheritance of eternal blessings… this makes many of our life choices very easy to make.  He is the worthy One in whom we are to trust, worship and serve; He is the worthy One we are to put first in every life choice we are to make.

As we live our lives this day may we all place Him number one in every area of our life. After all He has done for us, only He is worthy of that position.
